You Can Get Strangled to Death for Stealing Toothpaste, But Get Bonuses for Wrecking the American Economy

MARK KARLIN FOR BUZZFLASH, EDITOR'S BLOG

The Republicans start turning purple and expressing outrage whenever they -- or the tax or judicial system -- is charged with favoring the wealthy.

But let them tell that to Ann Marie Balboa of Chicago whose ex-husband was strangled to death by a store manager after shoplifting toothpaste and crayons from a CVS pharmacy in the Little Village section of the Windy City. According to a Chicago Tribune article, the police ruled the homicide "accidental," even though it occurred in "hot pursuit" in an alley behind the pharmacy:

Ann Marie Balboa paced up and down a Little Village alley sobbing Monday as she searched for the precise spot where her ex-husband was choked to death after he shoplifted crayons and toothpaste from a pharmacy over the weekend.

"I was told it happened here (in the alley), but I don't know where," she said.

Chicago police said Anthony Kyser, 35, had run into the alley after stealing the small items and being chased out of the CVS Pharmacy by one employee Saturday morning. He fell unconscious during a struggle with the employee and later died, police said.

The Cook County medical examiner's office found that Kyser was strangled to death and ruled it a homicide. But Chicago police determined the death was accidental, saying a store manager put a chokehold on Kyser as he tried to restrain him. The department, though, declined to elaborate further on its decision not to pursue criminal charges.

Let's safely assume that the total cost of the toothpaste and crayons that the deceased shoplifted was under $5.00.

Where is the justice in letting the barons of Wall Street go free to collect millions in bonuses, continue to live the lifestyles of the super rich, and are given hundreds of billions of dollars to continue ravaging the economy after already imploding it?  Where is the justice?

How does one measure the crime of sinking an entire economy through highly questionable, unethical, and no doubt -- if investigated -- illegal activity against the sentence of death in an alley for stealing items totalling less than a round-trip on public transportation in Chicago?

And what about the BP executives the White House has let run the show after despoiling America's southern coast, ruining the livelihoods of untold Americans, killing off animal life and polluting the Gulf and ocean for years on end, with the catastrophic oil leakage still gushing away?

We have a White House that we elected on the "Audacity of Hope," but it appears to hope that if one is wealthy one is worthy of deference, judicial and otherwise.  It is a bastardized form of "prosperity theology" that material success is a sign of worthiness, however much one has proved just the opposite.

Anthony Kyser, 35, died in a dark alley behind a CVS for pilfering a pittance in merchandise.

What he didn't know is that crime only pays when you are wealthy, because wealth gives you the right in this country to get away with unfathomable crimes against individuals and the nation.

Neither the White House nor Congress has put any sort of serious choke hold on Wall Street or BP or held anyone in the highest positions legally accountable.

That's an injustice of the highest and most dishonorable order.

Send them (the Democrats) a message--

I just sent a contribution to the Halter campaign in Arkansas. If a few corporate toadies like Blanche Lincoln get thrown out on their asses by a populist movement, the others will have to sit up and take notice.

Once again, the Democrats are selling out the people who put them in power. Unfortunately, given the current situation, our only realistic hope is to back Democrats who vote for working-class interests and go after the others with the intention of getting rid of them.

War on the working and middle class

This is an outrage! Killing someone for stealing crayons and toothpaste? You can bet if the thief had killed the store manager, it would be ruled murder. I agree with the article, people who do REAL harm to large numbers of lives never have to account for it. Hey, your pension is gone, sorry.  Hey, your mortgage payment doubled, sorry.  Hey, your health insurance doesn't cover the care you need, sorry. It really has turned into a war on the lower and middle class. One of these days, people are going to get enough of it and start fighting back.  Take your money out of the bank, they are crooks. Don't buy any of Walmart's merchandise, buying from them is a vote for low wages. Get out of the stock market, it's a mechanism to take assets from the middle class and give them to the upper class. Maybe our politicians don't represent us like they should. But we vote with our dollars everyday.

The "Democrats" no longer represent us

Again, the Democrats support one set of laws for peasants (citizens), and another for the rich and powerful.

They support the wealthy by protecting corporate profits at every opportunity.  Since the wealthy generally own the corporations, this is in effect putting money into the pockets of the wealthy.

It won't start to change until WE THE PEOPLE stop voting for this corporate-funded, pretend-opposition party, and start voting for REAL progressives.

The Green Party doesn't accept ANY corporate money and represents CITIZENS' interests, not corporate interests.  Your Green-Party vote sends a clear message to the corporatists WHY they didn't get your vote.

When the corporatists start losing "their" votes, they sit up and take notice.  Voting Green is the surest way to do this.  And if the Green Party gets a mere 5% of the vote, this will get them matching Federal funding.

Vote GREEN!

Neither will the Greens. They're human too, subject to BRIBE$

You act like a Rovian political propagada parrot by wrongfully scapegoating all Democrats, which makes you a liar, again.

There is most certainly a difference between a Progressive Democrat and a Blue Dog DINO. But you always lie about this fact. You distort the truth by lumping the likes of Dennis Kucinich, Alan Grayson and Howard Dean in with Obama, Reid, Pelosi and Rahmbo.

And if you lie about this fact, what is to stop you from lying about some other material fact. Thus, you too have already become as untrustworthy as your mythical Democratic monarchy.

Face it, until you can prove Green (who?) political candidates can walk on water, there is no way you can prove they will not succumb to the billions of dollars in legalized and untraceable bribe money just waiting for them around the corner on K Street.

It's the system that needs to change. WE THE PEOPLE have to start holding our employees in our government accountable for their actions, no matter which political party anyone belongs to.

The progressive Democrats are outvoted by the corporate shills

"You act like a Rovian political propagada parrot by wrongfully scapegoating all Democrats, which makes you a liar, again."

The acts by the Democrats were done in in their name.  Obviously there aren't enough progressive Democrats to change this behavior.  Democrats rejected single-payer health care, and had physicans that tried to bring up the topic at a White House conference on it arrested.

Where was Kucinich when single-payer was being rejected?  Obviously he was outvoted.  By Democrats.  The majority of them are corporate shills.  Are you too stupid to see this?

You validate my point, but call me stupid for making it? WTF?

Then you once again blame all Democrats for the sins of the Blue Dog DINOs.

Please stop making comments because you are only making a complete fool out of yourself, again.

Thus the reason why the Progressive wannabee Greens (who?) will never become popular with the voters.

Your point is naive

I never validated your naive point that we should vote for this corrupt party because of a few heroic individuals.

When you vote Democratic, you're supporting the whole corrupt party.  The rare progressives are so few they're irrelevant.  Look at the right-wing positions the Democratic Party has consistently backed.  This is despite the few progressives in the party. Your suggestion that we vote Democratic obviously isn't working.

Voting for this party gives them undeserved legitimacy.   It makes other voters (like you, for example) think non-corporate parties don't have a chance, and becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.  By voting for the Green Party, it shows other voters the possibility of change, and hopefully leads to still more votes in the next election cycle.  That's how new parties start out; by going through a growth stage.

If voters continue to vote Democratic, the corruption will never stop.  People have been consistently voting Democratic, but the wars are continuing, and the Democratic Party as a whole has rejected both single-payer health care and a public option, for example.

This will not change by voting for them.  Voting for the Green Party will start to shake things up.  It's time we shook things up!

Vote GREEN!

Greens are for those who can't do arithmetic

Republicans love the Green party and pump as much money as they can their way, even as they have the same problem on their right that I would certainly encourage. Democrats especially are not one party but many, and the fight is to get and support more folk like Alan Grayson getting elected and make others who are not so strong take notice such as Firedoglake has done. That is what it is to be effective.

I do not care that Jesse Helms was once a Democrat, or that Ben Nelson still is, what I care is that as much push as can be applied is done in the right direction. The arithmetic built into all "winner take all" elections guarentees that ANY third party will help most those they most disagree with. If a Green party candidate cannot win a Democratic Primary as a Democrat they certainly cannot win that general election either.

If you want to change how votes count with IRV or range voting that allows real multiparty competition then you would have my and most Democrat's support, but until that happens the only multi party competition is among the Democrats, and real progressives need all the help they can get, there.

If the Gang Of Pirates think that the only good Democrat is a dead Democrat, it is not any part of Bipartisan to accommodate them and roll over and play dead.

death in an alley

Some lawyer help us out here. What charges, short of murder obviously, could be brought against someone whose response to a threat is so over the top as to cause a death?

I suppose the police are thinking, "When one of us does that, we don't want charges brought, so the DA shouldn't bring any charges against a store manager who runs after someone with $5 worth of merchandise."

Now if Kyser had caused the death of the pursuing store manager, what then....?

We're in very bad shape.

Something has got to give and soon.

The election consequences of the Obama administration's corporate protectionism to the still significant majority of the Democrats in the House and Senate are surely going to be acknowledged sooner rather than later.  Already, Obama's endorsed candidates like Blanche Lincoln have taken a backseat to more progressive Democrats.

There are plenty of pundits and partisan media sites that try to disenfranchise the growing dissatisfaction within the Democratic Party by characterizing their concerns as being left wing. But I think ultimately, it's going to take a reassertion of the more progressive values and expectations that catapulted Obama into the presidency to remedy the growing Democratic apathy that serves to benefit the GOP re-emergence.
