Gun Toters are Now Allowed in the National Parks: We Need a Committee for the Right to Keep and Arm Bears

BUZZFLASH EDITOR'S BLOG

By Mark Karlin

Once our National Parks were a refuge of nature and tranquility, but that part of the American Dream just got shot full of holes by the NRA.

Attached to the so-called credit card reform bill that went into effect on February 22nd was – as is often the case in D.C. – a special interest amendment moved along by the NRA and its puppets. It allows, as of Monday, gun toters to carry their guns, including Handguns, into National Parks as long as they are in compliance with state law, as if any park ranger is going to check that one out.

BuzzFlash is currently offering in our Progressive Marketplace a magnificent BBC documentary on the glorious wildlife and natural setting of the world's first National Park, Yellowstone. Now the sound of gunfire will have to be added to future filming amidst the majestic sounds of wildlife.

Ironically and reflective of the backwards state of American politics, violence in National Parks has gone down in recent years. As the Los Angeles Times noted, "Major crimes reported in 2008 were at the lowest level since at least 1995, according to park service statistics." But that doesn't stop the indomitable power of the NRA from taking home a scalp for its members by making National Parks more dangerous by ending a prohibition on gun toters.

Frankly, at BuzzFlash, we are thinking of starting a Committee for the Right to Keep and Arm Bears. They are going to need firepower now, as well as providing bullet proof vests to park visitors. Protect people and the wildlife; that's what Congress should be doing, instead of the bidding of the NRA.

So you may have a modicum more protection from credit card predators, but watch out for the bullets whizzing by when you bring your family to enjoy the wonders of America's wondrous National Park system.

By legalizing it they are

By legalizing it they are actually putting our lives in danger. Imagine having a relaxing moment in the park with your family then all of a sudden we will be all in panic because of a riot or commotion with firing of guns. payday loans Being in public places for leisure should not be the right place for these mad and armed people.

Guns in National Parks? Are they kidding?

This is one of the most ridiculous rulings ever.  Count me among the non-visitors now.  Can you imagine sleeping in a tent and the idiot next door hearing a noise and starts firing!  Probably me sneaking out to the ladies room and I'm dead!  Our parks are our salvation and they need all the help they can get, but this is going to cut down on visitation dramatically because no sane person is going to take a chance on having his kid gunned down by "accident".  And just who is going to protect the inhabitants of the parks, meaning the bears, racoons, deer, et al, that we all enjoy looking at from afar.  The lunatic fringe of the NRA has done it again.  Guns are more important than people according to them.

Lions and tigers and bears and guns, oh my!

This is the typical bullying NRA's use of a solution in search of a problem.  It's amazing how our leaders roll and play dead for these clowns.  We are a nation descending into complete madness about guns.

gun-toting in national parks

Count me and my family out as visitors at any national park. Too many crazies out there armed and dangerous. Guns kill people and other living creatures-they should not be allowed into our precious land resources where people come to stand in awe of nature and its beauty...

count me OUT

I am with christopherflynn on this one. I sincerely hope there are enough "nature lovers" who pack heat, to make up for people like myself, who abhor violence and its tools. Because I will (self preservation) not set foot in any of the national parks, until the guns are prohibited there again. And I will talk out of visiting parks anybody I know, who will listen. That is a big group of people.

WON'T CATCH ME IN A NATIONAL PARK

http://TheHarvView.blogspot.com

This smacks of a few more elected officials getting rich while America burns.  I am sure that thousands of families will not visit National Parks and count me and my family as one of them.  I am doing this not only owing to safety considerations but as a voice.

I was thinking of inviting Dick Cheney for a trail walk in a park to try to convince him of his crass rantings, but now I feel a double jeopardy.
