John McCain, Sarah Palin and the Grand Old Party of Hypocrisy

September 4, 2008

The BuzzFlash Editor's Blog

You might say a key founding principle of BuzzFlash back in May of 2000 is that the Republican Party is a club of hypocrites.  They will say and applaud any change of position based on whether you are inside or outside the club.

If you are inside of the club, all indiscretions or disastrous records of service are forgiven.  If you are outside the club, all indiscretions and disastrous records of service prove that you are a socialist, immoral heathen.

Because blatant hypocrisy is such a hallmark of the Republicans, several years back we created a site devoted to it: GOP Hypocrites.com.  Our slogan for the site is "So many Republican hypocrites, so little time."

The reasons vary for the hypocrisy based on which of the three major factions of the party you belong to.  Sarah Palin is from the fundamentalist wing that believes every "believer in Christ" who opposes abortion (and that is the litmus test) is pure of heart and can do no wrong.  The Neo-Con wing of the party is arrogant and elitist and believes that their policies can never be wrong because they are so enlightened.  The Corporatist/Wealthy wing of the party believes that being ruthless is one of the reasons they are rich, so hypocrisy comes with the territory; it's one of their weapons in the battle to consolidate wealth.

These three main factions find their outlet in right-wing media personalities who echo their hypocrisy.

On what may have been the most brilliant first 15 minutes of "The Daily Show" ever (Wednesday night, September 3), Jon Stewart did one of his "X vs. X"/point-counterpoint segments that nailed how this works.

First he had Karl Rove claiming Governor Tim Kaine of Virginia had too thin a resume to be Obama's Vice President, but, of course, now Rove is saying that Sarah Palin is eminently qualified to be a vice presidential candidate.

You had Bill O'Reilly saying that with the Jamie Spears pregnancy the fault lies with the parents.  Of course, with the Bristol Palin pregnancy, it's a private family matter and the fault does not lie with the parents.

You had Dick Morris saying that Hillary Clinton used charges of sexism to "hide behind her apron strings."  And, right on cue, you had Morris claiming that Palin is the victim of liberal media sexism.

You had a top level female McCain advisor charging, like Morris, that Clinton was not the victim of sexism and needed to stand on her record and policies; and then the same person declare that Palin is being pilloried by a sexist press.

And as the closing "X vs. X," you had a video of Sarah Palin accusing Hillary Clinton of whining when she claimed that some of the media (Chris Matthews, for instance) had used sexist language.  Of course, this is the candidate that the McCain campaign is trying to protect from an Alaskan avalanche of revelations by charging that the reporting of her record and hypocrisy is due to sexism in the media.

It was a knock-out finish to 15 minutes of the best "reporting" on the Republican convention, with Stewart and his staff at the top of their ironic truth-revealing form.

Liberals tend be tolerant and self-critical, as a group.  If you accuse me of hypocrisy at times, I will probably examine my behavior and might agree with you.  That simply doesn't happen with a Republican politician, unless they've been tossed overboard because they are a political liability.

The "maverick" brand of John McCain is just the same old Grand Hypocrisy Party with different packaging. It's been stupefying to BuzzFlash readers and me at how they've managed to get away with it for so long.

Where is RON PAUGH?

All you could hear from the CORPORATE CONTROLED MEDIA was the BIG FIGHT between H. &B CLINTON and OBAMA all through the five days 24/7 WOLF-E and CNN FOX'S sister station that ia all we could SEE or HEAR. So here is my question WHERE IS RON PAUGH at the REPUBLICAN CONV., did he just dissapear down a HOLE. AND you are trying to tell me the CORPORAT CONTROLED MEDIA is not in McCain's POCKET along with Rove(TURD BLOSSOM), LIE-berman and FRIENDS. I am not one of CHICKENHAWKS for LIMBAUGH I still think for my self, thank you.

Is the gop D.O.A?

If we were living in the real world yes. Since we are living in the diebold universe - probably not. mcCrash and fallic(n) are easily laughed at and will no doubt provide many hee-haws for anyone with a brain, but those reich-wingers who see nothing but hate in others, while unhealthily ignoring the flaws within their own party will never ever see or admit it. If this were an honest election Obama would be a elected by a landslide. Don't get so cozy thinking Obama/Biden will get elected, we have a flawed system that by their own admission counts votes incorrectly and flips others - and always in the direction that favors the loosing gop'ers. Factor in that chimpy said he reallly doesn't want to give up the seat, KKKarl's heavy handed criminal deeds, and we have yet to get our NUKE-tober surprize - which could result in Martial Law. Now I might say that Martial Law was a very remote possibility had this maladministration NOT spent so much time and effort planning for "just in case" events that would "radically disrupt the functions of the government" and "cause massive destruction" to the country. Hitler wouldn't have left willingly either.

I have yet to see a ....

I have yet to see a mcINSANE advertisement that was based on his 'qualifications' or 'experience', every single advertisement for mcDISASTER has been an attack ad. I have said for years that re-THUG-licans could never win an honest election, or on their own merits - this (s)election cycle seems to be proving my theory. ---I'm still waiting for the 'family values' theme from them. This time around it should really provide some great laughter.

GOP Strategy

As with anything else in the intensely competitive electioneering of the GOP, the appointment of Sarah Palin was calculated. They have brought in someone who in one fell swoop shifted the media focus from the economy back to those wedge issues that prove so divisive to the country as a whole yet so lucrative for the GOP. They have managed to avoid the issue of the past eight years of GOP incompetence while shifting Sarah Palin's family and thin resume into the light. Once again, they have been allowed to move the argument from policy to personality. Marketing people can manufacture personality; the policy or lack thereof are the issues that should be getting all the scrutiny. Even as New Orleans was being hit for a second time when government negligence has left the city in continued disrepair after Katrina three years ago, these slick marketers were able to refocus the attention of the media. Very sad. As I said at the beginning, these are very slick and competitive electioneers; but thats all they can do besides spinning their incompetence once they take office. Scott McClelland said it, they are in permanent election mode.

Abortion By Airplane: Crime of the Century?

We have to keep hammering the newly-minted, fully undisputed, absolutely ironclad consensus reality that Governor Palin did in fact take that plane flight while in labor. Even though we would all prefer to believe that a governor would never commit the crime of failing to get medical care for an infant under her care, by her own admission that is exactly what happened. We would rather believe it was a transparent lie to cover up a Bristol pregnancy, but that has been made an officially unspeakable thought, and no one will ever, EVER investigate it. Well, probably Geraldo in a few years, but let's stay focused here.

So the Governor has made her choice. She chooses to stick with her story that she neglected to seek emergency medical care for her special needs child for over 10 hours, and she cannot, with her many previous pregnancies, claim that she did not know how dangerous that would be.

The male-dominated media does not understand what happened here. They think it's kind of funny and cute that she loved Alaska enough to fly there during labor. Many of these male writers have no idea what exactly happens in labor, and they are going with the assumption that if she did it openly, it must not have been illegal. We know better. The medical science is indisputable.

I've been blogging about this all day for like 24 hours. I have to go back to work to earn money to put food on my family. I see no evidence of anyone else picking up the torch here. GET ON THIS. Don't stop to ponder and dillydally, this is a clear-cut case of child endangerment, and that's a crime, and a criminal should not be running for office. End of story.

If you're worried about being sexist ask yourself if you would be as angry if Barrack Obama had stopped a woman in labor from getting to an emergency room, preventing her special needs infant from getting any emergency care for 10 hours. Of course you would. It's not a woman thing, it's a caregiver thing. You have to provide emergency medical care for anyone in your control. If you don't, it's a crime.

RIP GOP

Peggy Noonan said it best: "It's over." Don't be taken in by the hype and the manufactured enthusiasm in the convention hall. Conservatives (not to be confused with the Religious Wrongs) are despondent about the death of the Republican Brand. This is a Goldwater moment, where extremism is lauded in the convention hall and eschewed in the voting booth. Nice try, Crashdown McCain. With this"gut decision", you have effectively sent your Party into exile for a generation, which, by the Palin family standards, should be about 16 to 17 years.
