McCain the Maverick Guttersnipe Brings on the White Girls, the Black Guy and Race

Okay, McCain challenges Obama to go to Iraq and Afghanistan. Obama accepts the challenge and tosses in Europe (tracing a path McCain took earlier this year) and is greeted as a hero.

So the McCain camp panics and starts trashing Obama for being "uppity" (you know, as in "uppity negro" -- a characterization that the Washington Post is helping perpetuate) -- and the right-wing talking points spread across FOX and the GOP radio shill circuit that Obama was acting arrogant, usurping foreign policy, and drawing crowds only because there were opening bands that people were interested in seeing. (We are not making this up.)

Meanwhile, most of the mainstream corporate media -- having nothing better to do and continuing to perpetuate the myth that their role is to report both sides rather than to ascertain the truth -- goes along with actually seriously discussing a bizarre, Rovian (remember that he is an advisor to McCain) series of "attack ads" on Obama, squeezed in before the Olympics in a moment of panic. The panic is due to the fact that, on Obama's overseas tour, foreign leaders -- especially in Iraq -- took a distinctive tilt toward Obama's foreign policy goals. In fact, even Bush and McCain himself (depending on which McCain was speaking) started sidling toward Obama's positions in regards to the never-ending war and European relationships.

Fortunately, some of the corporate press did denounce the ludicrous attack on Obama for not going to a military hospital as bunkum. BuzzFlash stated that the McCain campaign had two headlines prepared for the Germany military hospital trip. If it didn't happen they were going to say, "Obama snubs soldiers." If it did happen, they were going to say, "Obama opportunistically exploits our injured soldiers." It turns out, from reports yesterday, that we were correct. The McCain campaign had prepared two such contradictory message points.

Now, McCain is unleashing what has become known as the Harold Ford "Black Man is Keen on White Women Primal Racism Fear" ad. Why toss tabloid fodder like Britney Spears and Paris Hilton in with Obama? Yes, perhaps to claim that he is all celebrity and no substance, but it was also to subliminally bring the "Harold Ford" factor into play: you can't trust a black man with white women.

It's the most basic racist fear that the Republicans have played on for years: black men threaten white women, which threatens white men, and subconsciously brings the whole issue of race to the forefront of the campaign.

So when Barack Obama joked the other day that the add was made to remind people that he didn't look like the other presidents on dollar bills, McCain's campaign manager, with a straight face and feigned indignation, accused Obama of injecting race into the campaign.

Then McCain himself chimed in, as prompted, to say that he agreed that Obama was bringing race into the campaign and how scurrilous that was.

You see, this is called, according to George Lakoff, keeping the elephant in the room, a most appropriate metaphor considering that dangerous Republican demagogues are on the loose. The more that McCain's campaign can bring up race, while blaming it on Obama, the more that race becomes an issue in the subconscious mind of many voters when they cast their ballots.

Racism isn't rational. Obama is monogamous; trust us on this one. So what threat, even in a bizarre hypothetical, would Obama pose to white women? Why none, but we are talking about exploiting the deep racial fears that hide in the deplorable recesses of the American soul going back to slavery, Reconstruction, and the rise of the modern Republican Party. This fear led to many a lynching if a black man so much as glanced sideways at a comely Southern white woman.

McCain, at this point, should be disqualified as a candidate. He has made so many gaffes that if elected it would be like having Captain Crunch run the nation, along with his financially and morally compromised Phil Gramm, who will pick the pockets of all those male racists out there who shoot up "liberal" churches because they blame progressives for their lot in life, when it's the Republicans who have economically fleeced them.

McCain ought to be confined to a neo-Confederacy assisted living center and finally leave his wife in peace.

To call the Spears, Hilton, Obama ad a new low in politics is to underestimate McCain's ability to sink lower than David Duke in Hell.

White male Americans don't need to protect their wives from Barack Obama. They need to protect the United States and their wallets from John McCain.

The guy is an immoral liar, who long ago lost his right to be called a hero.

Now, he's just a rabid junkyard dog with moral dementia.

No, Neva...

...we don't have nose rings. The only ones were those worn by the good ol' boy church burner closet KKK's who "elected" their man "W" in 2000 & 2004. Molly Ivins knew, and there are still a few journalists out there who see the big picture. Have you not noticed the rats jumping ship? Mixed metaphors aside, are you just hating the Democratic candidate, or do you really support yours?

Shuffle the deck already ...

... Mark. This c(an)ard was already played ad nauseum during the primary by BF and other Obama supporters, and that was to an audience that included some sympathizers. In the general, it's not going to work. Do you really think anyone (save some Obama supporters) will believe McCain is playing the race card by criticizing his celebrity status and implicitly comparing him to two white, female celebrities? Or when McCain tries to paint him as an arrogant, liberal elitist and Mark translates that into "uppity"? But, but ....... the Repubs would never try that if Obama was white! (ever heard of Al Gore? John Kerry?). Unless McCain is foolish enough to come up with something far more obvious, all he has to say is, "There they go again, accusing me of playing the race card." The focus will stay on Obama's race (and his accusations of race-baiting) instead of substantive issues, and the result will be that the independents, Repub crossovers, and even some Dems will get tired of the race card attack, and will begin to peel off.

Geezus ............ I hope Obama's campaign is at least slightly smarter. Although, given Obama's recent preemptive lead balloon (McCain will attack him because he "doesn't look like all those other presidents on the dollar bills."), and the subsequent backpedaling ("What? He just meant he was new to Washington politics. Can't you tell that by looking at the bill?"), it's not looking so good.

If Obama's campaign is foolish enough to keep playing this card game, and can't see they're playing the exact game that McCain's camp wants them to play, they lose.

That's all he's got

Thank you, Mark. You article hits the target on the desperation and incompetence of McCain and his clan. McCain is a menace to society and the world, right along with his buddy, Bush.

The only race card being played is the goading of it by McCain. Typical of racism in the workplace, stores, campuses and in politics, blacks have been goaded by subversive, subtle and not so subtle ploys to strike fear in whites. The fear of blacks taking what whites feel only they should be entitled to. This is racism at its best.

No wonder we have so many apathetic, noncontributing black men in society.

Once the black person rightfully cries "foul," "race card" is cried by the perpetrator. This was the answer to civil rights, affirmative action, desegregation, and other means to keep the black man in his place with little opportunity in this country to protect his family, have a decent income, contribute to society and enjoy the privileges of the rest of society.

What a diversion from the real enemy to Americans.

Americans who deny racism operates this way do themselves and their country a disservice, yet white America fully understands the racism cloud that burdens this nation. Foreigners are now fully aware of what has held America back and are now scrutinizing our dirty secrets: slavery, racism, stealing the land from the Indians, world domination, illegal wars, nationalism, fake religious adherence and a downright greedy, psychologically deviant, sociopathic society of misfits who can no longer fool the world. This is the image of America to the world Obama wants to change.

The elites need a scapegoat. The scapegoat is the real enemy, they say. If these scapegoats succeed, they will take away your deepest needs and desires. The reality is the elites are the real enemy. By creating a scapegoat for our problems, the elites kill three birds with one shot: 1) diversion from fact that neocons and elites are the enemy and robbing us blind; 2) disenfranchising the scapegoats so there's less money to spend on them through privileges received by the rest of society (pay, compensation, benefits, voting rights, civil rights, legal, education, medical, and a whole host of other "expenses" the elites can pocket; and 3) continuing to view the disenfranchised as immoral, "bad" and more prone to jail or prison.

This is the alternative to and perpetuation of modern day slavery.

It never was about race. It will not be the blacks, mexicans, indians, muslims, middle easterners, gays or any other singled out group that destroys this country. As you pointed out, it's always been about the neocons, elites and big business fleecing the rest of us. What white America fails to see is they are being fleeced as well. Moreso than minorities because they have more to lose.

Americans must examine ourselves from within each soul...how un-Christian, anti-American and un-patriotic we really are as a whole. Unless we are able to put our fears and egos aside, we may very will destroy the remains of a potentially great nation. We are well on our way to doing that.

As Obama said, "Is that all he's got?" McCain has nothing to offer Americans. His mission is to destroy Americans and what we have left of a democracy. But we don't have to help McCain. We can take him out of his misery by pushing to disqualify him as a candidate. We don't have to lie down and take this.

"We have met the enemy and it is us..."

Truer words were never spoken....or written,

I especially like this gem of a paragraph McCain, at this point, should be disqualified as a candidate. McCain's entire campaign is 'hate' based. The whole premise is funny (if you have a brain) and scary real (if you don't). They're even calling him a communist! Nobody's been scared of communists for 30yrs! The whole thing is ugly and laughable if it wasn't so chilling in it's intended results. That being a McCain presidency based on him not being scary, black, communist, terrorist Obama.

Obama's Blatantly Political Decision To Be Born Black

How can we allow a Black Man to admit he is Black and not point out that he made the conscious decision to be born Black while still in the Womb with the full knowledge that he was going to run for President as a Black Man? This is blatant Racism at its worst and the McCain Campaign is quite right to point out Obama's playing of this 'Race Card' in order to appeal to the racist in all of us. What's up with that? Clyde Barrow

Obama ... the UPPITY Negro

As a 50 something black American male with a history in the corporate world I'm very well acquainted with the kind of coded language used to insinuate the uppity Negro. If you're black and don't rely on slang or ebonics, "you don't talk black", if you're black and you're not demonstrating hip-hop culture characteristics, "you don't act black", instead you become an EXCEPTIONAL NEGRO. The EXCEPTIONAL NEGRO isn't easy to pigeon hole, by defying traditional negative stereotypes it causes a need to assign other limiting descriptives. Chris Matthews said on Hard Ball that Barack Obama needs to be careful of looking " a little too confident", a behavioral warning Matthews hasn't used to direct at any other candidates since this political season started. The McCain camp says that senator Obama is elite and out of touch, he has "airs" about him in other words, arrogant that is ... an arrogant black man is an UPPITY black man therefore. They're saying now that Obama injected the "race card" ( who the hell invented that saying? ), is there absolutely NO truth to what Obama said? Does Barack Obama need to remind us he's the black candidate or isn't that a huge part of the story behind his historic candidacy already? During the primaries it was perfectly fine when the mainstream media told us almost everyday that hard working white voters resisted supporting Obama, we were not supposed to connect race even though they told us that race was causing an anti-Obama reaction. Everyone on planet earth who's following this political season is aware of the role that race is playing but God forbid if Obama mentions it because then HE'S the one stirring up the mess about race ? No other candidate has had to walk such a tight rope, being black yet having to so carefully craft any references to his blackness or race for that matter, showing confidence while being judged as elite and arrogant/uppity. Barack Obama knew going in that he'd be up against this stuff, it's the rest of the population that seems to be trying to get a grip.

Damned if you do, damned anyway

Same situation here. In the corporate world as a mixed black female, I experienced similar reactions. It's fine if you're low on the totem pole. But once you're competing for higher positions, the race-baiting begins. Not only must you walk the usual competitive line, you must walk the invisible racism line that taxes the spirit, energy and soul beyond what white America will ever understand. Whether intentional or not. This is similar to how horses are broken. However, blacks are humans, not beasts of burden.

Not only that...

But as stated in this piece, McSame's campaign had preemptively constructed a lose-lose scenario when they wrote damning responses for whichever choice Senator Obama was forced to make by the Pentagon. Sounds like a setup to me...

Generating division and fueling hatred is on the top ten list of the Rethuglican play book. Just as it is listed in various articles and books that detail the historical facts and actions of fascist attacks on numerous governments in the past. Sound familiar? Well it should because it's the McSame.

Truth be told, ignorance, stupidity, hatred, lack of responsibility, lack of 'class', lack of empathy, the drive to place power and greed above all else, and all the other negative aspects of human behavior know NO RACIAL BOUNDS. I'd vote for a purple and pink alien from Alpha Centari before I'd vote for McSame or any of the other NeoCon fascists. I KNOW their agenda, they've already shown their evil nature in (pardon the term) spades. See there you Repuglican trolls a 'free gift' for you to rant about, now you can spin me into a racist too.

To summarize, "A-holes come in all colors."

Rock Star Image?

If Obama were trying to curry a "rock star" image, as some allege, he would be on a stage with either a guitar, on keyboard, or a set of drums with a microphone and dressed like a rock star. He is not. Good grief, how can anyone be so shallow as to accept that comparison as being legitimate? The fact is that McCain has been baiting Obama for quite some time now. The difference is that Obama is buying McCain's wolf ticket and making McCain look like the bitter, old white man that he is. McCain seems to think that because he was shot down and held in the Hanoi Hilton he is ENTITLED to be President. That's the poorest excuse to elect anyone. If anyone is an elitist, it is John McCain. He was born to a military family and his father was a high ranking officer. He needed his daddy's help to get into Annapolis, and then finished in the bottom 5 out of his nearly 900 student graduating class. He crashed three planes (none due to "enemy" action) before he was shot down over Hanoi. He was a partier, drunkard, and womanizer -- does any of this sound familiar? Reminds me of GeeDubya. McCain then cheated on his first wife who became disabled while he was in Vietnam. He left her for a blond-hair, blue eyed wealthy heiress whose family's money has helped him worm his way into the public life. He had barely become a Senator when he got caught in the Keating 5 scandal. Contrast that with Obama who grew up as the child of a white woman from Kansas and a Kenyan sheep herder. He lives on the South Side of Chicago (and, unlike McCain, doesn't own 8-10 properties all over the country). He is a self-made man, unlike McCain whose sponged off other people all of his life. Please -- if anyone deserves the "rock star" persona, it is McCain, not Obama. McCain is just jealous and very pissed that Obama is appealing to the majority of people not only here in the US, but also around the world. McCain is nothing more than an older, meaner and more bitter version of GeeDubya. McCain is what Gee Dubya will morph into over the next ten years.

Race Card

I emailed Morning Joe this a.m. to make the point about Obama being featured with two young, White, blond women but also on John McCain's deployment of the phrase "playing the race card" because that phrase entered the popular lexicon from the OJ Simpson trial where a Black man was accused of butchering a young, White, blond woman. It's a particularly nasty form of racism, one that led to countless Black men being lynched across the South. Emmett Till anyone? Still, either Paris or Britney would make a better President than John McSame.

McCain's New Ad

It is too late for McCain to be playing the race card first since Obama has already been doing that. With his they are going to try to scare you, tell you I have a funny name, and by the way I am black. He has now revised the I am black to a coded "I don't look like all the other Presidents on those dollar bills". Give it a rest. When Axelrod was asked what was meant by this on the Today show he just hee hawed around because he couldn't really come right out and admit that Obama was implying McCain was using racial comments which is just not true and he knows it. The ad you are referring too is just a play on the "Media Darling's" rock idol image. If you like to get up there and play for the cameras then don't complain when someone calls you on it. He is just like Paris Hilton and Britney Spears in that he feeds on all the adulation just like they do. He is just a publicity hound with a giant ego which the press has been feeding. You are just trying to read race into the ad because Obama wants to play the victim of racism again. He pulled this stunt already on the Clintons. It's beginning to wear a little thin now.

....... an attempt at humor, right?

Get tough

If Obama doesn't start doing the same to McCain as McCain is doing to him, Obama is going to lose this race. Negative ads work, period. Obama will end up like Gore and Kerry if he doesn't get some balls and fight back against the slime machine that is the GOP.

The Rock Star Imagine

Sounds like the Obama gang can't stand the heat! The race card has been played by the Obama campaign since he entered the race. That is the only way he thinks he can win. Make the others the bad guys! I for one think the Obama gang is disgusting and more racist than anyone else! For anyone that doesn't bow to Mr. Obama, we are called racists and idiots. Many of us are not impressed by this so called rock star image and how he portrays himself! A man that has done nothing in his lifetime except climb the ladder by using others and then denying knowing them. He is just another corrupt Illinois government cartel member. "Pay to Play" Is this how he is going to change America????? We thought Bush was bad for the country, just wait and see how bad it can really get, once Obama gets elected!

Absolutely Neva.

That Obama gang sure is more racist than anyone else. For over a year, Obama has been telling large white audiences that white racists are coming after them. Oh, no, that won't work. Uh, Obama has been telling black audiences that white racists are coming after them. Damn, they know that. Ok, how about Obama has been telling white audiences that black cops are going to stop them for no reason. Crap, they know that doesn't happen. I know! Obama has been telling black audiences that if they don't vote for the black guy, he will leave their race and become white. Let's try this: Obama's pointed out that he doesn't look like the guys on money! How much more racist can anybody be in saying Washington et al, were white? What's next for a racist scumbag like Obama? Will he publicly say that Jackie Robinson was black? Please, please don't let that happen. The country couldn't handle it.

Neva! And I Had Thought Your Racist Bile Had Eaten You Alive!

The Spin

The McCain spin machine, headed by Bush smearhead Steve Schmidt, has taken on the cheap attack mode of the previous Bush campaigns. It would be hoped that the electorate can see through the nonissue character attacks, but it is not likely because the electorate is moved by emotion rather than reason. The code words for "uppity" will be capitalized on and will portray Obama as uppity, elitist when he tries to respond to idiotic associations with white girls Spears and Hilton. See through the spin, people, and look at the real issue- the welfare of this country. We need to take care of the needs of this nation- infrastructure, healthcare, responsible economic policies that take us from the debtor status. McCain is hollow, shallow and very deficient in these categories and has to resort to cheap characterization attacks because he has no plan to fix the problems.

And worse!

"For anyone that doesn't bow to Mr. Obama, we are called racists and idiots." And progressives that don't jump on the Obama corporate bandwagon are branded worse than "racists and idiots", they are branded as Republicans! Obama drew attention to his looking a bit different. It's safe to assume he wasn't taking about his larger ears. It doesn't matter whether McCain is qualified, or whether Obama has little experience, or whether G.W. can not do the job. What we are primed and pumped to vote for is the sock puppet that twists and turns to the corporate interests that have their arm inside it. And that is why voting for one of the two mainstream party candidates sanctions the entire charade of free elections. It puts an imprimatur on the media coverage that is designed for only one thing, i.e., bringing brain share to advertisers. The more outrageous a Pat Buchanan, Hannity, etc., is of a candidate, the more people get PO'd and the more they tune in. The entire process from candidates, to media, to the conventions, to the election, to the coronation on Jan 20, 2009, is one giant self serving exercise in maintaining profits. And you do that by maintaining the status quo, the two party system, and vice versa. Run Ralph. Run!
