Barack Obama, Rev. Wright, and Racism, America Responds: We’re Not Done With You Yet

Nothing more profoundly and disturbingly symbolizes America's subtle racist double standard than George Stephanopoulos's question during the Philadelphia debate to Barack Obama: "Do you think Reverend Wright loves America as much as you do?"
We have all these right wing "God is destroying America because it has sinned" preachers running around with barely a question asked of the Republicans they back. Yes, Hagee, Robertson, the late Jerry Falwell, and countless other religious leaders of the fundamentalist cloth have delivered countless white versions of "God Damns America" statements. The only difference is that they don't "say it black" in black churches, and then see it looped endlessly around on FOX TV and other cable networks, not to say rerun again and again on talk radio.
The point that appears to be forgotten here is that Rev. Wright is not running for president. Barack Obama is.
As Wright takes a valedictory tour to take advantage of a national platform that has been offered to him by a media tinderbox filled with the kindling wood of race, the question remains as to why this is still front page news. Whether Wright is preaching the gospel and indignation to a media that can't get enough of this sidebar story because race sells only second to sex as far as spiking up ratings -- or whether he is just on an ego trip -- the point to ask is why this is a front page story at all.
The Washington Post, the New York Times, and most of the mainstream media have buried the lies, broken laws, torture, Iraq War malfeasance, incompetence, cronyism, etc., of the Bush Administration for the most part in the back pages of the newspapers (if printed at all) -- and generally kept it off of television news altogether; but it can't get enough of whether the former minister of a presidential candidate -- who served his nation in the Marines by the way -- "loves America."
Is this a joke?
No it's the "Made in America" racial double standard at work.
It's as racist as "nailing" Barack Obama for not wearing a flag pin, even though George and Charlie and Hillary weren't wearing flag pins at the Philadelphia debate -- and McCain is not asked why he frequently doesn't wear one. The double standard on the flag pin is so glaring that most Americans can't see it in front of their own eyes; one need only look at the television screen to see that Barack Obama is not the only candidate or television moderator not wearing the Bush Administration symbol of patriotism reduced to the size of a miniature piece of tin.
Yes, it's the old "black people have to prove themselves more than white people" thing rising to a full fever pitch. It's the media and America answering Barack Obama's challenge to confront our racist past during his dazzling speech in Philadelphia.
Unfortunately, the response by the media, other politicians in the race, and commentators has been, "not so fast, Barack -- we aren't finished with the racial double standard just yet."
We wish Rev. Wright a pleasant retirement, but we really don't know what his relevance is to the severe crises facing America. No white candidate, including Bush and McCain, has been so hammered about such an irrelevancy, considering the kooky religious figures that they have backing them.
That kind of scrutiny we reserve for a black man.
In case anyone needs to be reminded about the history of racial injustice in America, we encourage you to most appropriately watch and listen to the incomparable Nina Simone singing, "Mississippi Goddam."
It's been the goal of the Clinton campaign to prove that Obama can't transcend the reality of his being a black man in a nation that is still looking for a "Great White Hope."
The re-emergence of Rev. Wright as a national news story when we have Bush and Cheney preparing to possibly bomb Iran and Senator Clinton threatening to "obliterate" the same nation, not to mention a three trillion dollar debt, the destruction of our environment, the loss of jobs to overseas slave-labor nations, and the nearing of a tipping point in our dependency on oil -- well all this re-emphasizes that Clinton may be right: we are still stuck in the gutter of our baser instincts and anyone who wants to appeal to our better selves is in for a rude awakening.

Real Story - Should Obama Drop Out over Racial Controversy
It's not about Obama conveniently ending his long relationship with Reverend Jeremiah Wright and that ends it and Jeremiah Wright is a bad man and racist and how could he?
It's all about Barack Obama how after 20 years of having a close relationship with Pastor Wright appears to have a dual personality - one of which is a dark hidden side with racial confusion and the convenient use of disposable people. Obama - remember chose Jeremiah Wright and his church. Jeremiah Wright had very little to do with it except to just accept Barack Obama's friendship and now come to find out - hidden agenda.
It is an extreme stretch of anyone's imagination that this Obama – Wright relationship of convenience is all a complete surprise to Obama after 20 years of spiritual mentoring by Wright and Obama naming a book after a close friendship with Jeremiah Wright.
This is all about saving Barack Obama's presidential campaign after the public scrutiny does NOT like what it sees in the Obama racial controversy. This could set back civil rights 40+ years. This is NOT something to be ignored and just explain it away with another grandiose Obama public lecture/speech!!!
This candidate Obama comes highly manufactured and repeatedly groomed after more numerous focus group encounters and fine-tuning than half a dozen candidates combined. Obama may be the most highly tuned candidate, as the result of many, many focus groups – of our time. Obama "SLICK" is the quintessential political consultants dream robo-candidate that is intentionally designed to mislead the public...and he is!!
http://thejunction.net/justfacts/2008/04/28/jeremiah-wright-demands-race-privilege-central-obama-campaign-issues/
NO one - I am convinced can have it both ways. The real discussion should now focus on whether Obama should drop out of the race altogether. This is not Presidental and what the American People deserve or need right now. This Obama racial controversy could set back civil rights 40+ years. This is NOT something to be ignored and just explain it away with a public lecture/speech.
Obama had it for twenty years HIS WAY with the racist Wright - now he wants us to completely disregard that - it was different - it didn't happen - we don't understand - we are taking it out of context - we need to move on - it's not important... HS it is very important. It is outrageous.
The American People deserve to know exactly what we are getting into with any Presidential candidate and most rational people I know do NOT like what they see NOW in the Obama - Wright relationship of convenience.
When Michelle Obama wants to move on - that is an indication that they are into campaign damage control and no more and the race for President over-rules personal privacy and ANY relationship of convenience such as Obama- Wright.
Obama is too radical and NOT Presidential - and this comes from a Democrat.
The remaining Democratic primary voters and super delegates can/should act wisely and DENY Obama the White House.
I went searching for the truth, and only found facts - I hate that !

Hagee's comment
It's not about the "right" to preach
The problem is not about the "right" to preach. That's a free speech right.
The problem is the injection of religion into politics. Hagee et al can say whatever they please on TV in church etc etc, but when McCain accepts, much less solicits his "endorsement" he's doing so in the hope or expectation that those who agree with Hagee will look favorably on McCain and everyone else will just look the other way.
I think Obama was wrong to say that Wright's sermons and now public statements are a "legitimate political issue." Wright can say whatever he pleases, interpret religious texts as he sees fit and you and I and others can be persuaded or appalled or indifferent.
But now that Obama has left Wright's church and does not want Wright's "endorsement" then the whole thing should be dropped. As for Obama perhaps having made a donation to the church last year, so what? Catholics, for example, may donate to their parish without necessarily agreeing with either their priest or the Pope. Or you or I may donate to some organization whose spokesman makes statements that make us cringe even if we feel committed to the goals of the organization overall.

Pot Calls Kettle Black Much, Thomas M?
The Clintons...guilt by association with each other now....
One thing being overlooked here is that since Bill Clinton has been banging his family shield and acting like Mel Gibson leading a charge in Brave Heart for his wife....what good is he now to the Democrat Party as being their headline campaigner?
Obama should have had this thing wrapped up a long time ago and when he eventually does, how does Bill Clinton get out in front of a crowd with a straight face and campaign for Obama? How would Hillary herself do it when Hillary is now basically threatening the entire Democratic power establishment with the prospect of being the second coming of Joe Lieberman.
The echo of their fully embedded racist woven "win at any cost" campaign (both white and black voters KNOW the frickn' code) have rendered both of these Peronists invalid...but not in the eyes of their corporate sponsors who will win either way...McCain or Hillary will mule their agenda. Obama won't.
Imagine...an ex-Democratic president unable to campaign for his party's nominee? Bill Clinton likes to work a crowd but there are some crowds that won't welcome him any longer for what he has allowed himself to stoop to for his always smiling, waving wife as if she was in the lead car of a big parade. Why is she smiling and waving....? You can almost see the drool on the side of her mouth now that she has discovered the key to success in the remaining primaries: its the old Dick Nixon Southern Strategy but applied nation wide now.......Pull out that deck of cards and say it in as many ways as you possibly can. It works.
Sort of.
McCain who is the unluckiest guy in the world in one view (involved in an horrendous and totally rare aircraft carrier deck incident...then gets shot down and is painfully injured and then spends five years in an Hanoi slammer..then gets involved in the Keating Five stuff...then gets hammered by of all people, George Bush, in 2000) has finally had his ship come in. George Wallace could have won this time if the Democratic nominee was Hillary Clinton.
Yeah....Bill Clinton..America's first black president. We won't be saying that as a term of endearment any longer. 'But 12% of the population can't turn any tide', he and his charming wife figure.
We'll see about that won't we if Hillary steals the nomination with those Super Delegates...and you know that is exactly what she will do. Risking 12% minimum staying home come November is betting the farm that this cute new Southern Strategy will work on a bigger canvas.
Yeah..that's gonna be this summer's big story....will she actually get those Super Delegates to vote for her with Bill's help? Will she DARE to do this out in the open....will she do anything to close her own deal?
Yep.
Fasten your seat belts....
This is a party who can't figure out how to UNignore two major states and their delegates. They have had 4 months now to try to fix it. This is the question mark that Hillary wants to have perpetually floating in sky for everybody to see because it is the ultimate key to her success in order to justify her continued presence in this campaign.
They don't want to fix it.
Giggle away Pelosi....rant all you want Dean...
The Democratic Party will only provide afterglow atmospheric lighting for McCain's Inaugural Dance celebration in January when this double star finally runs into each other and explodes.
Super Delegates...? Who the F thought that one up in the first place? But there they are. Ace up the sleeve for a loser candidate. Perfect
How did that happen?
Who wrote those rules?
I'm at a slow boil over this crap....all I can see is the face of Joe Lieberman staring back at us. The Lieberman Southern Strategy.....
We have driven up to a multi car wreck on the interstate and its the Democratic Party.
What I wrote here is all over the place because I just can't believe that OUR party is doing this to itself.
Better watch out since November could also destroy the DEM majority in the House of Representatives and make Lieberman fully flip in the Senate and then we lose that house as well.
Then the GOP can cement the deal by finally getting a Supreme Court majority who fully stands aside for whatever extremee right wing coroporate agenda is floated their way...
We stand to lose this whole Banquet Frozen TV Dinner.
Keep it up Bill....
Keep it up Hillary....
What do you two personally have to lose at this point anyway?
Play the full deck. Put all the chips on the table....this is so much fun, ain't it?

Rev. Wright was as a Navy Medical Corpsman. Did you see the picture on Bill Moyers' program?

What about separation of church (religion) and state?
The sooner religion disappears as a legitimate topic of political conversation the better.
The candidates are as complicit as the media in introducing their religious "faith" into the public conversation. Enough already!
Rev Wright is not running for office. The sooner Obama stops talking about him the better. The sooner all candidates stop soliciting and accepting endorsements and campaign appearances by religious leaders the better.
Politics is in "Caesar's" realm, so let's talk about public issues and how to deal with them.
War, taxes, health care, income disparity, education, poverty, diplomacy etc etc etc.

Reverend Wright media spectacle

Thank you!
What has Rev. Wright said that is so wrong?
After viewing, ad nauseam, the out-of-context tape loops of the Reverend Jeremiah Wright's sermons and his recent appearance on Bill Moyer's Journal and Monday at the National Press Club I am left to wonder...Yeah?...and?...so?...
Anyone who has a smattering of unadulterated American history knows the truth of Rev. Wright's words. Even out of context.
But the lap dogs of truth would rather feed us the Gerber Baby Food version of U.S. history: where Thomas Jefferson never fathered childern with his mulatto slave Sally Hemmings; Robert E. Lee didn't callously defy his father-in-law's, George Washington Parke Custis, dying wish to manumit his slaves; that the CIA's overthrow of democractically and legally elected Prime Minister of Iran had nothing to do with the return of the Ayatollah Khomeini...need I go on?
What did the millionaire TV newsreaders expect the Rev Wright to say? "Thank you, white America, for 300 years of involuntary servitude, followed by 100 years of Jim Crow, limited educational and employment opportunities, and substandard housing and run-down inner city communities! It's made us a stronger people. Please, white America, we want some more!"
So here we are in the first decade of the Twenthy-first Century, and the millionaire newsreaders of network and cable TV, at the behest of their corporate masters, are stirring up the old code of racial fear; a small, disparate, scattered minority of the nation's population will somehow rise up and slaughter the white 85% of the country in its sleep. Utter nonsense. But that is the unspoken, underlying meaning of the "code."
The greatest problem with this country is that collectively the American people suffer historical amnesia. We are no longer even Pavlovian dogs but pabulum-fed television-zombies, who concentrate on bobbles, trinkets, any and all meaningless distractions which the millionaire newsreaders dangle before our eyes while their masters pick our pockets.
Jimmy Carter once said America deserves government as good as its people, or words to that effect. So do not be surprised, ladies and gentlemen, if we wake up on November 5 to a president-elect McCain.
Amen to that!
Yeah for ETS
What has Rev. Wright said that is so wrong?
Well
What he preaches is not wrong
If you have only heard the snippets that make his words seem to convey the exact opposite of what the entire sermon was about, then you have no idea what he preaches.
You could at least follow the many links to the entire sermons before condemning what you think he preaches.

Of course it is still possible to listen to his sermons to try to pick out disconnected phrases that prove what you want to.
I had a step-mother who would take offense at every innocent thing I said or did. I had been raised to wash fruits that I took from the refrigerator before I ate them. She took that as an insult to her housekeeping abilities. I finally realized that the problem was hers, not mine.
