Barack Obama, Rev. Wright, and Racism, America Responds: We’re Not Done With You Yet

April 29, 2008

Nothing more profoundly and disturbingly symbolizes America's subtle racist double standard than George Stephanopoulos's question during the Philadelphia debate to Barack Obama: "Do you think Reverend Wright loves America as much as you do?"

We have all these right wing "God is destroying America because it has sinned" preachers running around with barely a question asked of the Republicans they back. Yes, Hagee, Robertson, the late Jerry Falwell, and countless other religious leaders of the fundamentalist cloth have delivered countless white versions of "God Damns America" statements. The only difference is that they don't "say it black" in black churches, and then see it looped endlessly around on FOX TV and other cable networks, not to say rerun again and again on talk radio.

The point that appears to be forgotten here is that Rev. Wright is not running for president. Barack Obama is.

As Wright takes a valedictory tour to take advantage of a national platform that has been offered to him by a media tinderbox filled with the kindling wood of race, the question remains as to why this is still front page news. Whether Wright is preaching the gospel and indignation to a media that can't get enough of this sidebar story because race sells only second to sex as far as spiking up ratings  -- or whether he is just on an ego trip -- the point to ask is why this is a front page story at all.

The Washington Post, the New York Times, and most of the mainstream media have buried the lies, broken laws, torture, Iraq War malfeasance, incompetence, cronyism, etc., of the Bush Administration for the most part in the back pages of the newspapers (if printed at all) -- and generally kept it off of television news altogether; but it can't get enough of whether the former minister of a presidential candidate -- who served his nation in the Marines by the way -- "loves America."

Is this a joke?

No it's the "Made in America" racial double standard at work.

It's as racist as "nailing" Barack Obama for not wearing a flag pin, even though George and Charlie and Hillary weren't wearing flag pins at the Philadelphia debate -- and McCain is not asked why he frequently doesn't wear one. The double standard on the flag pin is so glaring that most Americans can't see it in front of their own eyes; one need only look at the television screen to see that Barack Obama is not the only candidate or television moderator not wearing the Bush Administration symbol of patriotism reduced to the size of a miniature piece of tin.

Yes, it's the old "black people have to prove themselves more than white people" thing rising to a full fever pitch. It's the media and America answering Barack Obama's challenge to confront our racist past during his dazzling speech in Philadelphia.

Unfortunately, the response by the media, other politicians in the race, and commentators has been, "not so fast, Barack -- we aren't finished with the racial double standard just yet."

We wish Rev. Wright a pleasant retirement, but we really don't know what his relevance is to the severe crises facing America. No white candidate, including Bush and McCain, has been so hammered about such an irrelevancy, considering the kooky religious figures that they have backing them.

That kind of scrutiny we reserve for a black man.

In case anyone needs to be reminded about the history of racial injustice in America, we encourage you to most appropriately watch and listen to the incomparable Nina Simone singing, "Mississippi Goddam."

It's been the goal of the Clinton campaign to prove that Obama can't transcend the reality of his being a black man in a nation that is still looking for a "Great White Hope."

The re-emergence of Rev. Wright as a national news story when we have Bush and Cheney preparing to possibly bomb Iran and Senator Clinton threatening to "obliterate" the same nation, not to mention a three trillion dollar debt, the destruction of our environment, the loss of jobs to overseas slave-labor nations, and the nearing of a tipping point in our dependency on oil -- well all this re-emphasizes that Clinton may be right: we are still stuck in the gutter of our baser instincts and anyone who wants to appeal to our better selves is in for a rude awakening.

Real Story - Should Obama Drop Out over Racial Controversy

OMG - how many out there have serious head injuries???

It's not about Obama conveniently ending his long relationship with Reverend Jeremiah Wright and that ends it and Jeremiah Wright is a bad man and racist and how could he?

It's all about Barack Obama how after 20 years of having a close relationship with Pastor Wright appears to have a dual personality - one of which is a dark hidden side with racial confusion and the convenient use of disposable people. Obama - remember chose Jeremiah Wright and his church. Jeremiah Wright had very little to do with it except to just accept Barack Obama's friendship and now come to find out - hidden agenda.

It is an extreme stretch of anyone's imagination that this Obama – Wright relationship of convenience is all a complete surprise to Obama after 20 years of spiritual mentoring by Wright and Obama naming a book after a close friendship with Jeremiah Wright.

This is all about saving Barack Obama's presidential campaign after the public scrutiny does NOT like what it sees in the Obama racial controversy. This could set back civil rights 40+ years. This is NOT something to be ignored and just explain it away with another grandiose Obama public lecture/speech!!!

This candidate Obama comes highly manufactured and repeatedly groomed after more numerous focus group encounters and fine-tuning than half a dozen candidates combined. Obama may be the most highly tuned candidate, as the result of many, many focus groups – of our time. Obama "SLICK" is the quintessential political consultants dream robo-candidate that is intentionally designed to mislead the public...and he is!!

http://thejunction.net/justfacts/2008/04/28/jeremiah-wright-demands-race-privilege-central-obama-campaign-issues/

NO one - I am convinced can have it both ways. The real discussion should now focus on whether Obama should drop out of the race altogether. This is not Presidental and what the American People deserve or need right now. This Obama racial controversy could set back civil rights 40+ years. This is NOT something to be ignored and just explain it away with a public lecture/speech.

Obama had it for twenty years HIS WAY with the racist Wright - now he wants us to completely disregard that - it was different - it didn't happen - we don't understand - we are taking it out of context - we need to move on - it's not important... HS it is very important. It is outrageous.

The American People deserve to know exactly what we are getting into with any Presidential candidate and most rational people I know do NOT like what they see NOW in the Obama - Wright relationship of convenience.

When Michelle Obama wants to move on - that is an indication that they are into campaign damage control and no more and the race for President over-rules personal privacy and ANY relationship of convenience such as Obama- Wright.

Obama is too radical and NOT Presidential - and this comes from a Democrat.
The remaining Democratic primary voters and super delegates can/should act wisely and DENY Obama the White House.

I went searching for the truth, and only found facts - I hate that !

political correctness

The chickens are coming to roust ( yes I meant to spell it that way) for Obama. The politically correct double standard that Buzz-Flash and other turncoat progressive sites have been trying to sell, is imploding. At least the truth is coming out, before the general election. Instead of making excuses for Obama and his crew, why isn't Buzz-Flash at least making an effort to get to the truth of the Obama, Wright, Farrakhan connection of hate. Wrights words are straight out of Farrakhan’s play book of “hate the blue-eyed devils”. Wake-up and smell the racism and it’s not coming from the Clintons. Does the staff of Buzz-Flash really want a democrat in the Whitehouse? Or are you going to keep pouring water on the drowning democratic hopes for America? The swift-boaters will have a field day with the Obama, Wright, and Farrakhan and Obama will take good democrats down with them. I wrote about the Black Muslim movement ( five percent-errs) in North Carolina’s prisons in my 2005 book. They espouse the same rhetoric as Rev. Wright and Luis Farrakhan. The political correct name for this behavior has been “reverse racism” as if all racism is the fault of the white folks of this country. Wright is a racist, and it’s out of the closet now, there is nothing reverse about it, racism is racism! Obama has been listening to that sort of hateful rhetoric all his life, from his wife, his black friends and his minister Take your collective heads out of the sand and stop supporting the one democrat who cannot win the general election. Now’s when Y’all react with you puffed-up righteous indignation to this post, and try and brand me to be a racist, as you have branded the Clinton’s and almost everybody who is a Clinton supporter. Here is a little tid-bit out of my past, that pops that imaginary racist bubble. I campaigned for Harvey Gant’s run for U.S. Senator, this is of course documented by a speech I made on a local radio station and a TV appearance. I made in his behalf. How about Y’all at Buzz-Flash get back to some sort of balance in the stories you post. The continuous barrage of anti-Clinton opinions are hurting our chances to elect democrats in Nov. If Y’all used a small fraction of the energy you put into nit-picking Ms. Clinton, into researching Obama and his crew, then you would be an asset to putting a democrat in the Whitehouse and democrats in congress. As it stands it appears that being politically correct is more important to Buzz-Flash than the obvious truth. If it squirms like a snake, if it hangs out with snakes, or sleeps with snakes, then chances are “it” also is a snake. Skip Roth.

Stop the fear mongering

If Obama was a racist, there is not a chance in hell that he would have been a sitting United States Senator in good standing. Your research in "guilty by associations" is flawed. It should also extend to the Hildabeast. Not since George Wallce has a Democrat had so much GOP support. Why is that the case? Why is the GOP estatic in crossing over and voting for the Hildabeast? link: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB120899654405739949.html?mod=opinion_main_commentaries Also, the Hildabeast is more "radical" than Obama. At Yale law school she embraced some leftist causes she perhaps wishes she hadn't today (the Black Panthers' claim that they couldn't get a fair trial, more about which later); worked in the most important radical law firm of the day -- Treuhaft, Walker and Burnstein, in Oakland, which represented the Communist Party and defended the Panthers in their murder trials; and became associate editor of an alternative law review at Yale which ran stories and pictures depicting policemen as pigs and murderers. You need to calm down on your identity politics. We realize how the play will go down: Wright, and Farrakhan being the leading actors, with supporting actors going to Ayers,Khalidi. Somehow they are all related to Obama in a master conspiracy plan to take over "white" America. I am very scared :). What a joke. If this is all the GOP can muster, Obama is a shoe in for President. Obama unfortunately cannot address more forcefully these topics to the Hildabeast for fear of coming across as an "angry black man". He is flying at 30,000 feet and is trying to stay above the incoming fray. It's a tough balancing act. The GOP knows that. Race was always waiting to creep up, but Obama is about to break the mold of how politics is done in this country. He is about to re-write the text books on Politics 101. Obama will get the Democratic nomination. I might be delirious, but I predict that Obama will win the GE in a LANDSLIDE against 72 year old McCain. The newly registered voters, latinos, and african american voters will outnumber the seniors and status quo voters who only vote on impulse, and fear and race, not on long term policy issues for the good of the country. Having Governor Richardson will help reel in the latino voters too. So that hopefully will be off the table for McCain. Finally, do you know who Obama is going to be surrounded once he gets into the White House? White men.

I think it's fear

I think there is some racism in the constant attacks on Obama and Rev. Wright. But, I also think it is fear. Not fear of African Americans. but, fear in what Obama promises to bring. He is a young, dynamic and highly intelligent man. He also promises reform. And the powers that be know it's more than campaign promises. He is challenging the establishment and conventional wisdom. And the Clinton machine. They don't want reform. They like things fine now and bankrupting the country and selling it out to the highest bidder. And the clintons are the ones who control the party now and are in bed with corporate and lobbying interests. When Obama became a real threat to the Clintons and establishment and threatened to be the nominee, it was time to take him down. They have gone after this man thru the media with relentless pounding about everything from his clothes to beer to his associates. No one has had their pastor used to take a candidate down before. But, Wright was an effective tool to use to bring down the threat of Obama. We have had a month and half of nothing but, Wright and some about Ayres to try to make the man unelectable. The media piled on for over a week painting him elitist. And notice that a state that was a given he would not win suddenly became a story about him losing like he was suppose to win it and this tearing down began the very evening of primary of Pennsylvania. painting him a total loser. The Clintons will not allow anyone to be the nominee. They sell themselves to the far right in taking obama down. Now we have a surrogate set up the press club thing yesterday? And isn't Moyers a hard Clinton backer? They will not let Obama have the nomination not so much because he is black as he is threatening to give the government back to the people and change things for real. And judging from the polls, they are winning.

The Powers That Be Know That For Them It's Now Or Never

"Which is why they won't let go of Reverend Wright." "Otherwise?" "They'll have to face the music." "Which is?" "Their having to answer serious questions such as 'What is it again, Mr. President, that our loved are fighting and dying for in Iraq?" "Or how come there's so few of you and so many have nots and left outs?" "Along with the ineveitable appeals to our better selves." "From one of the candidates, for example, who promises us that if we elected he'll end the Iraq War, negotiate with Iran plus turning things around here at home." "And then what sort of world?" "It'll be up to us."

Clinton Connection

I have one simple question. Is it true that the organizer of Jeremiah Wrights Press Club Event, Rev. Dr. Barbara Reynolds, (she was introduced as the organizer) is the very same Rev. Dr. Barbara Reynolds the ardent Clinton supporter?? They said the timing of Jeremiah Wrights speech couldn't have been worse. But I guess for Clinton it couldn't have been better!

YES/

DM, I emailed the story from the Daily news to John A at Americablog this morning saying I did not know how true the story was. He emailed me back that it was very true.

Seperation

Seperation of Church and State anyone?? I love America but the one thing that just bugs me about my beloved country is that we think we are without sin and have every right to cast any stone we want to. We should knock it the hell off but I fear many of our religious leaders have lead us AWAY from Christ. Or from reason and kindness (your religious or non religious mileage may vary and that's fine with me). <<>> What is the lesson for us as a nation over this Rev Wright thing? Perhaps that we should remove the hatred out of our own eyes before we try to remove it from another's? Instead of accusing each other of hate, do as Obama is striving to do and reach for common ground? I don't really know but while I love my country, it's unrelenting hatred of *itself* is just sad. Sad sad sad.

I'm a Middle-Aged Working Class White Male

and I think Rev. Wright has a point! God DAMN America under the Bushes and the Clintons, indeed!

Jesus versus American santanism

Wright speaks the truth to America's satanists. They in turn respond with their usual hate and violence. The only way for Obama to win is to throw Wright under the bus. Of course at that point he has lost (lost the truth, lost God, lost, hope, lost the dream) but he might be president.

Hypocrite

So let me get this right, Hagee, Robertson and Falwell have no right to preach what they preach, but Reverend Wright does. If there was a preacher stating that the government was trying to kill white people through AIDs and drugs, would you stand behind that preacher’s right to preach? The left has criticized Hagee, Robertson and Falwall for decades. The left criticized Bush’s religious views his whole time as President. And what does Obama have to say on the issue regarding Reverend Wright? “I think that people were legitimately offended by some of the comments that he had made in the past. The fact he's my former pastor I think makes it a legitimate political issue.” But here is Mark Karlin, who claims that the first three preachers have no right to preach their sermons, but Reverend Wright does. Then he starts with the racist claims. Let me ask you Mark, which of the three candidates said that they won’t wear the flag pin? Obama. The other two never made that statement, so they are not criticized for it. It’s not racism, as you claim. Criticizing Obama is not racist. If you want to criticize Hagee, Robertson and Falwell, that’s fine, but don’t call people racist for criticizing Wright. Obama donated over $20,000 to Wright’s church last year and it is a legitimate argument to link the two. You’re hypocritical statements are very typical of the left though. Don’t worry you’re not alone.

Hagee's comment

I bet you can look up the stat somewhere on this... how many times have you seen Hagee's Catholic church is a whore comment played on the media compared to Wright's Goddamn America comment? Those white rev's say some of the most outrageous things and the press says, oh my and then moves on. A black man comes along and says something equally incendiary and suddenly it's a black uprising. All the blowhards should just shut up! I don't care what your blather consists of or what you look like or who you pray too or if you have unsavory friends and some bad habits. You are either on the bus or off the bus that's driving towards the solution to all our problems.

It's not about the "right" to preach

The problem is not about the "right" to preach. That's a free speech right.

The problem is the injection of religion into politics. Hagee et al can say whatever they please on TV in church etc etc, but when McCain accepts, much less solicits his "endorsement" he's doing so in the hope or expectation that those who agree with Hagee will look favorably on McCain and everyone else will just look the other way.

I think Obama was wrong to say that Wright's sermons and now public statements are a "legitimate political issue." Wright can say whatever he pleases, interpret religious texts as he sees fit and you and I and others can be persuaded or appalled or indifferent.

But now that Obama has left Wright's church and does not want Wright's "endorsement" then the whole thing should be dropped. As for Obama perhaps having made a donation to the church last year, so what? Catholics, for example, may donate to their parish without necessarily agreeing with either their priest or the Pope. Or you or I may donate to some organization whose spokesman makes statements that make us cringe even if we feel committed to the goals of the organization overall.

Colleen Clark
Cambridge, MA

I think that you’re

I think that you’re absolutely right about candidates seeking endorsements from a particular church leader. They are trying to recruit their followers into the candidate’s political ranks. I do believe a politician’s religious views are legitimate topic for debate though since it will effect their position on a number of issues. If a person from that whacko group in Texas were running, I would hope that people would question their church and the views held by its leaders. I also believe that huge donations made by the Obamas enable Reverend Wright to have the power that he has. Speeches like this should not be commonplace in America. There is a way to criticize your government without the false allegations made by Reverend Wright. He makes statements that enrage people without any proof offered.

Colleen, don't feed the Bush Nazi Trolls

like this asshat - or Thomas M, who's proven himself a Hillaryinsta and a bigot to boot!

drprodny

Another classy comment from you drprodny. You have proven that you have a mental problem. Calling people a bigot when you yourself are one. You're right I am for Hillary, which is my right as a American to choose. Because I choose her, you call me a bigot, which is why you are a bigot. Everybody who disagrees with you is a bigot. Sick!!

Pot Calls Kettle Black Much, Thomas M?

You're like Alan Rickman's Guy of Gisbourne in ROBIN HOOD, PRINCE OF THIEVES - a Satanist who accuses everyone in his way of "Satanism". All you do is tell everyone who fails to worship at the feet of St. Hillary the Triangulator how "unpatriotic" they are. Go away, McCain-Clinton Troll - you no longer amuse us.

The Clintons...guilt by association with each other now....

One thing being overlooked here is that since Bill Clinton has been banging his family shield and acting like Mel Gibson leading a charge in Brave Heart for his wife....what good is he now to the Democrat Party as being their headline campaigner?

Obama should have had this thing wrapped up a long time ago and when he eventually does, how does Bill Clinton get out in front of a crowd with a straight face and campaign for Obama? How would Hillary herself do it when Hillary is now basically threatening the entire Democratic power establishment with the prospect of being the second coming of Joe Lieberman.

The echo of their fully embedded racist woven "win at any cost" campaign (both white and black voters KNOW the frickn' code) have rendered both of these Peronists invalid...but not in the eyes of their corporate sponsors who will win either way...McCain or Hillary will mule their agenda. Obama won't.

Imagine...an ex-Democratic president unable to campaign for his party's nominee? Bill Clinton likes to work a crowd but there are some crowds that won't welcome him any longer for what he has allowed himself to stoop to for his always smiling, waving wife as if she was in the lead car of a big parade. Why is she smiling and waving....? You can almost see the drool on the side of her mouth now that she has discovered the key to success in the remaining primaries: its the old Dick Nixon Southern Strategy but applied nation wide now.......Pull out that deck of cards and say it in as many ways as you possibly can. It works.

Sort of.

McCain who is the unluckiest guy in the world in one view (involved in an horrendous and totally rare aircraft carrier deck incident...then gets shot down and is painfully injured and then spends five years in an Hanoi slammer..then gets involved in the Keating Five stuff...then gets hammered by of all people, George Bush, in 2000) has finally had his ship come in. George Wallace could have won this time if the Democratic nominee was Hillary Clinton.

Yeah....Bill Clinton..America's first black president. We won't be saying that as a term of endearment any longer. 'But 12% of the population can't turn any tide', he and his charming wife figure.

We'll see about that won't we if Hillary steals the nomination with those Super Delegates...and you know that is exactly what she will do. Risking 12% minimum staying home come November is betting the farm that this cute new Southern Strategy will work on a bigger canvas.

Yeah..that's gonna be this summer's big story....will she actually get those Super Delegates to vote for her with Bill's help? Will she DARE to do this out in the open....will she do anything to close her own deal?

Yep.

Fasten your seat belts....

This is a party who can't figure out how to UNignore two major states and their delegates. They have had 4 months now to try to fix it. This is the question mark that Hillary wants to have perpetually floating in sky for everybody to see because it is the ultimate key to her success in order to justify her continued presence in this campaign.

They don't want to fix it.

Giggle away Pelosi....rant all you want Dean...

The Democratic Party will only provide afterglow atmospheric lighting for McCain's Inaugural Dance celebration in January when this double star finally runs into each other and explodes.

Super Delegates...? Who the F thought that one up in the first place? But there they are. Ace up the sleeve for a loser candidate. Perfect

How did that happen?

Who wrote those rules?

I'm at a slow boil over this crap....all I can see is the face of Joe Lieberman staring back at us. The Lieberman Southern Strategy.....

We have driven up to a multi car wreck on the interstate and its the Democratic Party.

What I wrote here is all over the place because I just can't believe that OUR party is doing this to itself.

Better watch out since November could also destroy the DEM majority in the House of Representatives and make Lieberman fully flip in the Senate and then we lose that house as well.

Then the GOP can cement the deal by finally getting a Supreme Court majority who fully stands aside for whatever extremee right wing coroporate agenda is floated their way...

We stand to lose this whole Banquet Frozen TV Dinner.

Keep it up Bill....

Keep it up Hillary....

What do you two personally have to lose at this point anyway?

Play the full deck. Put all the chips on the table....this is so much fun, ain't it?

or...

...if Clinton takes the nomination, Obama could pull a Lieberman and run as an independent, perhaps with Gore

Rev. Wright, The Patriot

If you want to compare Rev. Wright to Timothy McVeigh, tell me if Timothy McVeigh was in the operating room with Lyndon Johnson when he needed medical attention?

Rev. Wright was as a Navy Medical Corpsman. Did you see the picture on Bill Moyers' program?

ssg13565

I wasn't comparing Rev. Wright to Timothy McVeigh. I was making a point. Because somebody serves in the Military doesn't make you Patriotic. Nothing more!!

What about separation of church (religion) and state?

The sooner religion disappears as a legitimate topic of political conversation the better.

The candidates are as complicit as the media in introducing their religious "faith" into the public conversation. Enough already!

Rev Wright is not running for office. The sooner Obama stops talking about him the better. The sooner all candidates stop soliciting and accepting endorsements and campaign appearances by religious leaders the better.

Politics is in "Caesar's" realm, so let's talk about public issues and how to deal with them.
War, taxes, health care, income disparity, education, poverty, diplomacy etc etc etc.

Colleen Clark
Cambridge, MA

hes Not talking about rev wright

Its the 'mainstream media"" who keeps putting this in the "news" not Obama

Media

And how do we get rid of the scourge of the punditry? I for one and going to watch less cable news. It's been like a grievous accident from which I can't turn away. I think I need to stay away from websites like this one too (sorry buzz)(unlikely to happen to be totally honest).

A CRY HEARD ROUND THE WORLD

why does america hate the black man? He has been enslaved for over 400 years.forced to work in the fields and farms of slave masters. With out health care, proper clothing, proper shelter, no pay, no time off, if sick or with child.Beaten or hung if you refused to comply. with being raped or cursed at. This seem like the same treatment that Rev. Jeremiah Wright is being put through now. by the news media. Sen. Obama is being persecuted by the news media. because he knows rev. wright and he is his pastor. Who can carry the weight of anothers sins on his shoulders. Does ones mother, father, brothers, sisters speak for you? Do we all think alike?

America does not hate the black man

The issue of the black man is more complex than Rev.Wright's rants on AIDS, daming America, and chickens coming home to roots. The religious black culture apparently has not been fully vetted, and the media is now paying attention ONLY because a black/white man is running for the highest office in the land. Its also because Wright has done much harm to Obama's candidacy, giving fodder to all the racists out there, and those leaning on the fence for Obama to now have an excuse. This is why you are seeing the GOP not letting go of this. Its an emotional issue for establishment status quo whites, almost an awakening of sorts. You must understand that his name doesn't help, nor does his affiliations(some of them weak) with Wright,Farrakhan,Ayers, and Kahalidi. These names will appear in every swiftboat ad this summer. I hope that the moveon.org swiftboats are ready to retaliate, because there is going to be a rumble in the jungle. Frankly the black church, and any church should stay away from politics, and focus on the religious doctrine of the day, love thy neighbor, etc.

Right On GOPhater and thanks Helen for those names

Right on GOPHater and helen. The media is in control everytime you see a newscaster say "and Rev Wright is in the news again" of course-they put him there! He's been on KRON 4 at least a dozen times since I tuned at 7AM this morning! He has been there since yesterdays news on Kron 4 and ABC 7.... They put him there and keep him there repeating the same lines over and over! Of course my favorite line is the one he speaks about being patriotic and serving in the military and asks Cheny where he was..

Silly Argument Dominick!!!!!

You said.... "Of course my favorite line is the one he speaks about being patriotic and serving in the military and asks Cheny where he was.." Is this another one of your Patriotic hero's because he was in the military??? Timothy James McVeigh (April 23, 1968 – June 11, 2001), was a former decorated United States Army soldier and security guard who was convicted of eleven United States federal offenses, and ultimately executed for his role in the April 19th, 1995 Oklahoma City bombing. The bombing, which claimed 168 lives, was the deadliest act of terrorism within United States borders until the September 11, 2001 attacks and remains the deadliest incident of domestic terrorism in the United States.............It doesn't mean a thing if you've been in the Military or not to be "Unpatriotic."

RE: Thomas

ROTFLMBO--silly argument? I merely made a statement of a line that I liked and you picked up on that. Just like those who took the Revs. sermon out of context. You just went to my one line, I happened to like and made that line a silly argument. There was no argument there. It was just something I liked when he said it and I'm sure he wasn't thinking of McVey when he said it and as a matter of afct neither was I.

Reality doesn't matter

The corporate media create and promote their own "reality" by what they choose to show us. It doesn't matter what Obama says or what one could dig up about other candidates. The media will ignore whatever they want to bury. They are a corporation and have no interest other than profit. And I'd like to hear Obama say something like "Rev Wright can say anything he wants. This is a free country. Any other questions?"

Reason does matter

Many seem to forget that it is Rev. Wright that decided to go on this tour. He had his reputation tarnished and his patriotism put into doubt due to his association with the Obama campaign. Not only is it right that he set the record straight, but it should also be covered by the press. They owe him that after the gross caricature they made of him. Sen. Obama is a grown man that can take care of his own campaign and doesn't need to be protected by aides who suggest that to save his own career, that he should "push the good reverend under the bus." He handled the situation, I believe a month ago, in a very beautiful, dignified and spiritual way. He clearly stated that he does not agree with everything the Rev. Wright believes. That aside, they share many beliefs as well. That is all anyone need say regarding personal spiritual beliefs, even if running for president. To that I would like to add that to suggest that the press cover McCain's association with controversial holy men is wrong. If it is wrong for the press the focus on Rev. Wright as a way of determining who Barack Obama is, then it is equally wrong to do the same with Hillary or McCain. You may be angry that only the Rev. Wright association is being pressed, and you may be right, but to suggest that the press do the same thing to the other candidates is just an impulse of that anger. The media is a large dumb dog, if we don't scream at it to "Stop." now and then, it will tear up the flower bed, every time. So, I agree with you, "Rev. Wright can say anything he wants. This is a free country. Any other questions?" That might be an effective "Stop" to a belligerent press.

HILLARY FREE PASS

robertsgt40- If guilt by association stands, why not take a look @ Hillary's buds. How about Jorge Cabrerra photo with Hillary(campaign contributor and convicted drug smuggler)? Or where is Hillary's ex pastor, William Procanick, doing 3yrs.(sentenced Feb '08) for molesting 7yr old girl....Well inquiring minds want to know

Procanick not linked with HC

Although he is linked with Clinton...Clinton, NY where he had a church, but that is the only affiliation he has with the word "Clinton".

Barry O has a real problem here. He can’t cut himself off completely from Wright or he’ll instantly lose the 90% of black voters who are supporting him solely because he’s a brother. But clearly Wright is not going to take the hint and go away quietly, which jeopardizes support for Obama among the 88% of the U.S. population that’s not black. Almost makes you feel sorry for the guy. Almost. Talk about the chickens coming home to roost. Obama took legitimate comments by Hillary and Bill Clinton and deliberately spun them as racist rhetoric. He stood by and did nothing as his supporters viciously branded Hillary Clinton as a race-baiting monster. He tried to intimidate anyone asking him hard questions by implying that if you challenge him, you’re a racist. He’s encouraged the idea that if he is “denied” the nomination, African-Americans will stay home and doom Democratic chances in November. Nobody in this election has played the race card as strenuously or with such duplicitous intent as Barry O. The idea that his “crazy uncle” may now prove his undoing is absolutely delicious. Almost makes you feel sorry for the guy. Almost.

Setting the Record Straight

At 2:06 pm, Tues, Obama is denouncing the commentary made my Wright at yesterday's conference, live on CNN and other networks. With very strong words, Obama said this election is not about me, Reverand Wright, Clinton or McCain. It is about the American people and their struggles of trying to survive in this economy. This country is in real trouble and it is wrong to focus on Reverand Wright. Obama also said he is personally offended by Wright's remark that his Philadelphia speech on racism was politically motivated and that he was sadened by the remark. He also said Wright's appearance at the conference was a perfomance rather than a press club and finds Wright's positive statements on Farrakan objectionable. We can surely bet that the MSM will twist everything they can get from Obama's press conference. Get ready for the barrage!

Keith Olbermann

has done a great job of pointing out just how much race baiting the Clinton campaign has engaged in. Even the majority of Air America/Nova M jocks have pointed it out. Nice to see you expose yourself for the bigot that you are.

Thomas M

Truth you said......"Nice to see you expose yourself for the bigot that you are." Real classy grown up talk. I rest my case!!! Keith Olbermann has drank the Kool-aid. He is no better than Cliff Matthews & Dick Morris!!

Sounds like it to me...

I also thought you sounded like a bigot. I became convinced of it after your second post. Olberman 'drank the kool-aid'??

Sounds like it to me...Only if you are one!!!!!

That doesn't surprise me. You guys throw the "bigot" word at everyone that disagrees with you!!! You've done it from the very start of Obama's campaign!!! You've started out Nasty & have stayed Nasty. No intelligent conversation of ideals, just Hillary bashing & hate Rhetoric. You guys have set Obama up for this fall. Your blind faith & refusal to investigate your candidate sensibly has probably lost the Presidency for the Democrats. The Media & Obama hiding Rev. Wright for over a year was a lie & a con game. You need to ask Obama why he chose to do that. You need to ask him how he could sit there for almost 20 years & not hear Rev. Wrights hate rants. You need to ask him how he could take his children there to listen to that crap. You need to ask him why he has donated over $40,000 to Wrights church in the last 2 years, if he didn't believe in the Reverends message of hate. The blame is on Obama, not the press, not the Republicans & not White America. "A bigot is a prejudiced person who is intolerant of opinions, lifestyles, or identities differing from his or her own, and bigotry is the corresponding ideology." Sounds like Obamas campaign slogan to many of us.

Hello Mr. Penn, I've always

Hello Mr. Penn, I've always wanted to meet you.

Thomas M

You wouldn't have a problem with someone that said they hated black people and liberals.

Reverend Wright media spectacle

Mark, you have framed the issue perfectly. Wright is not running for president. I've never witnessed a set-up like yesterday's National Press Club debacle. The questions were all right down the middle of the Clinton plate. Every one was designed to cast Barack in a bad light. And in a subtle appeal to the youth vote, the questions were asked in a highly smarmy manner by a telegenic, young 20-something female. And the national mass media ate it up. CNN embarrassed themselves with wall to wall coverage Monday all the way to midnight. And after the first hour or so, there was no new news - just a relentless rehash of questions that had been asked and answered weeks ago. But, then again, that's their job. The editorial department of the NY Times had purportedly chosen to endorse Obama. Then word came from upper management that the endorsement was to go to Hillary. The national corporate media is endorsing Hillary. If she wins the nomination, even dottering old warhorse McCain can beat her. In truth, it really doesn't make any difference who wins between Clinton & McCain. Both are owned by special interests and will do their bidding. What the media has effectively done is revive racial fears and hatreds. Hillary won PA playing that card and she'll continue to play it through the early June primaries. She still won't get a big enough majority to win, but some super delegates may back off their pledge to Obama and the remaining ones may be convinced Barack no longer has coat tails. I've got to say it; Hillary, you are one nasty and anti-American human being.

I doubt Hillary had anything

I doubt Hillary had anything to do with this, though she certainly is happy to benefit from it. As is McCain. You didn't think that America was going to put a black man in the white house without a fight did you? Stop whining and get to work. Obama is doing fine, and thankfully has not become as hysterical as many of his supporters.

Thank you!

Beautifully said, Buzzflash. I agree with nearly every sentence of our editorial. This primitive grilling of Obama and Rev. Wright is embarrassing, distressing, disheartening. I'm stunned that I have been stupid enough to think that we (I include the general population in this, not just the media)were better than this. Hagee comes off as nearly psychotic, in my opinion. Rev. Wright, IMHO, comes off as educated, clear, with a passionate grasp of history and a commitment to his ministry. Wright can have 20 times the humanity of Hagee, and yet it is Wright who is being cross examined by "America." If you want to see a shining example of this primitive fear and racism played out in our own progressive territory, take a look at Joan Walsh's commentary on Rev. Wright ("Why Wright is So Wrong") in Salon, yesterday. She "hears" him as hateful, incendiary, unappreciative of white people, vengeful, and of the opinion that 9-11 victims deserved their fate. She says she "feels sorry for him." (mighty white of her). No mention of Hagee, whose renewed comments about New Orleans' sinning (read: Gay Pride Parade) being punished by hurricane Katrina took place in the same timeframe. This skewed interpretation of Rev. Wright is staggering. Of course it's racism! It is startling that, right along with the right wing, some of us progressives can vomit this up and not even smell it for what it is.

What has Rev. Wright said that is so wrong?

After viewing, ad nauseam, the out-of-context tape loops of the Reverend Jeremiah Wright's sermons and his recent appearance on Bill Moyer's Journal and Monday at the National Press Club I am left to wonder...Yeah?...and?...so?...

Anyone who has a smattering of unadulterated American history knows the truth of Rev. Wright's words. Even out of context.

But the lap dogs of truth would rather feed us the Gerber Baby Food version of U.S. history: where Thomas Jefferson never fathered childern with his mulatto slave Sally Hemmings; Robert E. Lee didn't callously defy his father-in-law's, George Washington Parke Custis, dying wish to manumit his slaves; that the CIA's overthrow of democractically and legally elected Prime Minister of Iran had nothing to do with the return of the Ayatollah Khomeini...need I go on?

What did the millionaire TV newsreaders expect the Rev Wright to say? "Thank you, white America, for 300 years of involuntary servitude, followed by 100 years of Jim Crow, limited educational and employment opportunities, and substandard housing and run-down inner city communities! It's made us a stronger people. Please, white America, we want some more!"

So here we are in the first decade of the Twenthy-first Century, and the millionaire newsreaders of network and cable TV, at the behest of their corporate masters, are stirring up the old code of racial fear; a small, disparate, scattered minority of the nation's population will somehow rise up and slaughter the white 85% of the country in its sleep. Utter nonsense. But that is the unspoken, underlying meaning of the "code."

The greatest problem with this country is that collectively the American people suffer historical amnesia. We are no longer even Pavlovian dogs but pabulum-fed television-zombies, who concentrate on bobbles, trinkets, any and all meaningless distractions which the millionaire newsreaders dangle before our eyes while their masters pick our pockets.

Jimmy Carter once said America deserves government as good as its people, or words to that effect. So do not be surprised, ladies and gentlemen, if we wake up on November 5 to a president-elect McCain.

Amen to that!

Wright's a scholar and historian, far better educated than many media pundits. He knows the nation was stolen (or occupied) and much of its wealth was built on slavery. It's sad Obama felt he he had to reject Wright, but I still hope to vote for Obama.

Yeah for ETS

Thanks ETS for your comments! It needs to be said and broadcast loudly. I had the same response you did. What exactly did the Rev say that was wrong? I hear most poeople, Thomas below is a perfect example, who's mere assertion of their offence or white-fisted obsequious aquiecense to the jugger-head empty meme of "patriotism" (some fantasy version of America's inhernt and unfallable moral superiority)do not know the first thing of America's real sins, post WWII. The information is out there; it requires thought and the ability to transcend the myopic vision of ideology (read: idols), but it is clear after reading the horrific history of what the good ol' US of A has done to millions of people around the globe that there is no nihilistic grey area for these cowards to hide in. To see this, to have the courage to study its well documented features is akin of having a gestalt change in regard to conventional reality. Afterwards, one wonders what all of these sleep walkers are doing--indeed, what was I doing? As you so eloquently say, the American people are passive infants blinded by careerism and consumerism and emotionally addicted to ideology. Thomas' inept "rebutal" to you is a perfect example of this knee jerk unconsciousness: unable to formulate a coherent refutation his only wimper to the boot of reality is "he's wrong". If we are headed towards an economic depression, it very well be the type of reality feed back loop that America requires to get our collective head out of the sand. As far as the AIDS theory that the Rev Wright has mentioned, I know there are scientists who have written extensively about (from their pov) the evidence that AIDS was a manufactured virus. I haven't followed the argument, but I do think we need to reevaulate our unconscious predilections to reject anything labled "conspiracy" without objectively evaluating the evidence. We incredously dismiss anything that interjects into the twin engines of pop culture (careerism and consumerism)smugly declaring lack of evidence with our eyes closed, while proudly holding our own prior unconsious philosophical memes as sacrosanct and ineluctable. greg

What has Rev. Wright said that is so wrong?

ETS...You said "What has Rev. Wright said that is so wrong?" ......The "Real Problem" with all this stuff, is there are many of you who "don't" realize what he preaches is wrong!!

Well

just for the heck of it, be specific.

What he preaches is not wrong

Do you have any idea what Reverend Wright preaches?

If you have only heard the snippets that make his words seem to convey the exact opposite of what the entire sermon was about, then you have no idea what he preaches.

You could at least follow the many links to the entire sermons before condemning what you think he preaches.

Of course it is still possible to listen to his sermons to try to pick out disconnected phrases that prove what you want to.

I had a step-mother who would take offense at every innocent thing I said or did. I had been raised to wash fruits that I took from the refrigerator before I ate them. She took that as an insult to her housekeeping abilities. I finally realized that the problem was hers, not mine.
