Clinton Campaign Dirty Trick Against Obama on Choice Will Backfire

BuzzFlash has had a policy of not endorsing Democratic candidates in primaries because we think our readers should decide who they want to represent them. We admit to a bit of an Obama/Edwards tilt in our coverage, but we would support whoever the Democratic nominee is. Certainly, Hillary Clinton is extraordinarily well-qualified to become president.
That being said, some of the Clinton campaign tactics are starting to tick us off big-time, because they are dirty tricks claiming things that have been disproven. In particular, the Clinton campaign resurrected a warmed-over accusation that because Barack Obama voted present on some abortion bills when he was state senator here in Illinois, he is not fully behind choice for women.
Yet, as was the case in Obama's senate race, this was clearly disproven by the head of Planned Parenthood of Illinois, who says that Obama was a strong supporter of choice. A recent Associated Press article confirms: "During his eight years in the legislature, Obama cast a number of votes on abortion and received a 100 percent rating from the Illinois Planned Parenthood Council for his support of abortion rights, family planning services and health insurance coverage for female contraceptives. He voted against requiring medical care for aborted fetuses who survive, a vote that especially riled abortion opponents."
Yet the Clinton campaign, even after being chastised for being dishonest about Obama's choice record during the Iowa Caucuses race, is continuing to use this false accusation in New Hampshire -- and has continued to feed the misleading attack to the national press.
It involves a practice allowed in the Illinois Senate of voting present on some bills. Obama, at the request of Planned Parenthood of Illinois, voted present on some abortion bills in order to attract Republicans and wavering Democrats because if enough of them voted present the offensive bills would be defeated by allowing them an option other than voting yes. In short, according to the head of Planned Parenthood of Illinois at that time, Obama was doing what they asked of him.
"The poor guy is getting all this heat for a strategy we, the pro-choice community, did," said Pam Sutherland, president and CEO of the Illinois Planned Parenthood Council.
The misleading and dishonest attack on Obama isn't even original. As we said -- and we know because BuzzFlash is in Chicago and obviously follows politics in Illinois -- it was used by Democratic primary opponents during Obama's senate run. (The Linked column from the Chciago Tribune was first published on March 19, 2004.)
As for the effectiveness of that dirty trick then, we have a message for the Clinton campaign: Obama won.

This was my conclusion: Like
Hillary
I've been following very closely the various candidates and noticing the different standards being set for them by the media pundits, bloggers and the public. At this time, I still haven't decided whom I'm going to vote for yet. However, I do hope to render a "fair and equal" assessement of each candidate's individual qualifications and experiences in making that final decision.
Interestingly, what I am seeing happening a little more each day is that Hillary is being held to what's beginning to look to me as an impossible standard, that no one could meet. On the other hand, these same standards are not expected of her opponents though. She is also being scruntized by the media with a fine tooth comb more so than any of the other candidates -- particularly Obama.
My question to Buzzflash is this: "If Obama were a black woman and she had the the exact same credentials, charisma and could also give the same kind of "feel good" speeches talking about all the grand things she intended to do for America (as Obama is professing); but who, like Obama, had not done anything in her political past that is indicative that she is actually capable of delivering on all the things she says she's going to do, would you be as outraged as you are now and defend her with the same passion and commitment?"
Hillary get lost!
Hillary and Bill are republican corporate hacks. They need to go back to Arkansas and hide under a rock.
To Hillary Get Lost
Wow! Your insightful and sagacious commentary leaves us all a bit weak in the knees. Kudos!
Oh. What makes you think that Obama, who has pledged to bring all the coporate interests together to solve our promises, is going to get them to give up their power?
Enough already
I appreciate that BuzzFlash admits their bias . . . unlike the MSM, TPM and FOX. And especially unlike that terminal bag of hot gas Chris Matthews. That said, BuzzFlash, you are wrong. Hillary won Saturday's debate because she clearly made the case for experience and pointed out her admirable record of getting things done. Obama had some lame legislation he got passed that said, in essence, you could only bribe Senators if you feed them standing up. Hooahh!
Obama said (under his breath) that Hillary was wrong last night when she charged that O's (Obama's not Oprah's - sorry for the confusion) NH campaign manager is a lobbyist. I checked it out and guess what?? It's true!
C'mon BuzzFlash! Stop shilling and start investigating. Get back to what I loved about you in the beginning. Be independent! Point out scoundrels where you find them and don't excuse the charlatans. In short, don't get turned by the pretty turn of a phrase. Investigate the substance and then decide! No campaign is perfect but you should expose the hypocracy on all sides!
Hellary doesn't get it.
Among the things we are trying to "change" are dirty Rovian politics and spin. She is stuck in the Rove age. If Democrats are stupid enough to nominate her, we get what we deserve. (Not to mention that she is the only one of the three remaining Dems that will lose the general election.) Hellary! Go back to the senate and vote for more war and LIEberman Kyl amendments! Maybe you can run as an independent next time. Just please don't rob us of a chance for real change in American politics.
The Horse Race Doesn't Matter
"What does?"
"Whether or not a candidate pledges that if elected he or she will end the Iraq war STAT."
"OK, but if a candidate who has made that pledge is elected president next November, how can we be sure he or she actually fulfills that pledge?"
"We see to it, that's how."
Buzzflash Joins Media Feeding Frenzy on Clinton
I am sorry to see Buzzflash join the media feeding frenzy on Hillary Clinton. It all began with Brian Williams and Tim Russert who set out to help Obama and Edwards mug Hillary Clinton, and they were only too willing to oblige.
Obama speaks in eloquent generalities, but there is nothing to back it up. I agree he would probably be better than the incumbent and if he is the nominee, I will vote for him, but he is my fourth choice after Richardson.
I am very disappointed at John Edwards. He was my first choice, but if I get a chance, I will vote for Hillary.
A big wag of the finger for Buzzflash.
Here's a video with the attack postcard and the Obama response
fyi, I'm not affiliated with the campaign, but I do live in NH...

Hillary's Less Than Marvelous Qualifications
There is no one more enthusiastic for Barack Obama or for a change from this dreadfully vicious administration that I am (or most members of my extended family). But there is one thing we are ALL agreed upon and quite adamantly so. There is no way that Hillary (and more correctly, Bill - remember the co-presidency?) gets a second bite at the apple. With her votes for the war, her sense of privilege and the Democratic version of the Bush viciousness we see all too evident in her and those around her, she is in no way "qualified" to be president. I would think any woman aware of how she has come to her present "position" would be ashamed to have to see her carrying the banner of an honorable and hard-fought feminist independence. The voters have an opportunity to take two presidential administrations to the woodshed with their votes this term. The Clintons had the watch during the crucial years before 9/11 and Bush has been on watch ever since. The record speaks for itself.
What??
First, describe how this supposed, "sense of entitlement" has manifested itself. I don't get it.
Second, why sould any woman be ashamed? She has done wonderful things on behalf of women both here and around the world. What have you done, "Commensense?"
The Clintons are vicious? More vicious than you? Hard to believe but what examples of this heartless viciousness do you have?
By the way, it wasn't Bill nor was it Hillary who ignored an Intellignece briefing entitled something like, "Al Qaeda may try to Hijack planes in order to attack the US. That was GW Bush.
You have issues. Maybe not psychological or pathological but issues nonetheless. Seek help.
One Way Ticket to Reality Land
I suppose I do have issues. I have many issues with a woman who enabled (and it probably wasn't the first time) her husband to adulterize their relationship within the Oval Office itself, treating another woman like someone he might pick up on 8th Avenue. Quite a coup for women's rights there. That the Clintons are vicious is evident from almost every political step they take, the recent lies about Barack Obama's pro-life record a small example (head of Planned Parenthood of Northern New England has corrected this little lie, or should I call it a fib to spare your feelings?). For you, apparently, anyone who calls attention to the honest truth has issues. Let me tell you something. The days that your ilk could brow beat anyone who dared spoil your little Presidential bridal shower are over.
Whaaaa?
Are you really going to blame Bill's dispicable adultrous ways on Hillary? You are twisted. Politics ain't ping pong. That the campaign misreported O's stand on abortion is clearly wrong. O's campaign corrected them and the blowback will hurt Clinton. That's politics for ya but it hardly rises to the common definition of viscious. I admire the honest truth (by the way, is there any other kind?)and I have never brow beat anyone. Please get help.
Spelling counts
Now that the vicious Hillary gang is going after a legal Obama phone message under a law which apparently doesn't apply to primaries, I can feel perfectly free to hold your feet to the fire in the matter of spelling and point out that your post contains numerous spelling errors (DESpicable, for one). If spelling were the only problem. That you cannot connect Bill's adulterous ways to Hillary's craven reaction is certainly no plus in your column. That as First Lady she saw her home and a venerable American institution used as the set for an episode of the Jerry Springer Show should not of course reflect badly on her. Why should it? She was ONLY First Lady although now she is attempting to claw her way into our hearts and minds with reminders of how much that "experience" has meant. I will grant you that you are nicer than I am because you recommend help in my case when in yours it may be that you are beyond help.
Mark Karlin/Buzzflash excuses for Obama don't work
Were there 130 planned parenthood votes - no - the analysis show something else. Your point in http://www.buzzflash.com/articles/editorblog/027 "Clinton Campaign Dirty Trick Against Obama on Choice Will Backfire" is effectively a smear of Clinton in support of the most conservative of the remaining 4 candidates who is also the one that has shown the least ability to get get things through Congress. The "according to the head of Planned Parenthood of Illinois at that time, Obama was doing what they asked of him" - only is true of the planned parenthood votes - and is not true of the 130 times he voted present - most of which were to duck the political fallout that either a yea, or a nay, would bring. I did not expect this kind of con job from Buzzflash - perhaps Mark needs a vacation until after 2/5.
The Clintons
I am not nor have I ever been "crazy" about either one of the Clintons. Neither are true "liberals", and I believe the centrist crap most everybody uses to describe either is just bullshit to cloud that they are both what a lot are now describing as "center right". I'll close here by saying that in my mind I trully believe that Eisenhower, Nixon, Romney (the "dad", not Williard) were actually more "liberal" than either Clinton. My belief is the same as in the 2004 election, if Hillary is the Dem nomineee, I'll vote for her, but she is definitely not even my 3rd choice at this time.
BUZZFLASH is PREJUDICE TOWARD HILLARY
I hope OBama gets the nomination and Huckabee gets the REPUGNANT nod. They get what they deserve - 8 more years of hatred and racism. I am a Black female and live in Tennessee and know exactly what RACISM is. There will be those who will say that I am a racist (RACISM = RACE PREJUDICE + POWER). I don't have any power to change anything, but I can be a bigot and accept it. I have bigotry towards those who look in face and just because they don't use the N word - it means they are not racist. Listen when Harold Ford ran for the senate in TN - all the stops were pulled out and IT showed us one thing. Jim Crow went underground and became JAMES CROW, ESQ. ask George Bush and his following. A part of me want you to get another REPUGNICAN. Gas will be $4.00 and more poor people will die for the rich man's war (Mark my word).
Cheap
That is all I can say about Hillary Clinton's tactics! If I could vote, I'd vote for either Obama or Edwards! I saw Clinton losing her nerves about change, and also claiming she has more experience than Obama - because she was First Lady for 8 yrs? Come on, I am quite sure that Obama has enough experience and certainly far more than the cretin now in the White House.-
Huh?
I watched the debate last night and never not once did Hillary say that she was more experienced based on her time as First Lady.
Hate her if you will but don't lie about her. It makes you sound witless, foolish and irresponsible. Your credibility suffers, too.
It's especially unnerving
because Obama stands for precisely nothing. The word "change" is like Giuliani's "9/11." It's just a symbol. What else? Oh, the Loser Bill Bradley, who wants to cut your Social Security, and is a big he-man "realist" like Bob Kerrey and the Bloombergs and David Boren et al., are doing their best to promote a "new" Democratic party where the government doesn't spend anything on its citizens. Beware of bipartisans. They make empty promises. The time for "bipartisanship" is when you have the winning issue and they don't. Then you let a few of them aboard for a couple of changes to your bill. As long as it's cheap and gets the bill through, it's worth it. If you start off "bipartisan," you get a crappy bill that doesn't make anybody happy.
Obama is an empty suit. He's got "Hillary's a bitch," and "I'm for CHANGE." Nothing else.
A Good Start
"Hillary's a bitch" and "I'm for CHANGE" is a good start. Her mantra is "experience" - 35 years of experience. Wow, I can't remember any presidential candidate making such a claim. Even George Washington couldn't have made such a claim. Certainly not Lincoln. She is so primed for this job that everyone should just stop in their tracks and demand we have the crown forged now. The fact that she was able to get through innumerable cocktail parties, luncheons and teas without spilling anything on herself is not exactly the experience I personally value in a president or that she slipped between the sheets every now and then in the presidential bedroom. (Considering Bill's track record it must have been more then than now.) In one respect her logic is impeccable - that is if you are arguing to turn the country into an aristrocracy. In fact, that is precisely the argument monarchists use against the vagaries of a democracy - electing someone different on a regular basis who is not entirely familiar with the ground rules of keeping the riff-raff in their place. Pardon me, but we have never officially admitted that family or dynasty politics is the preferred form in this country. Alas, the poor souls who are taken in by this dog and pony (Punch and Judy?) show.
Just what has Obama done for Illinois?
Obama was a mediocre state representative. His win in Illinois for the Senate happened when his opponents sex problems forced him out and then the only candidate they could find willing to run was Alan Keyes who a local dog catcher could beat. After he won the Senate spot and before the ink was dry on his oath of office, it was on to the next phase of his life, running for President. Something he promised Illinois he would not do. He was going to be the best Senator we ever had he told us......when does he start? Hope he told us....
that's a familiar line. Hope that he does his job is more like it.
Go find a copy of Hillary's complete resume. She is far more than a President's wife.
She has been an advocate for women and children starting when she was in law school
at Yale. She is responsible for the Children's Health Program and introduced in Congress
while she was first lady. She served her whole term in the Senate keeping her promise to
New York. Obama is a great orator but his resume is small and every time someone points
out his flaws, we hear his whining about it. If you mention his drug use, he's clean because he admitted it? What do you think would happen to you if you got caught with marijuana or cocaine? He can't even take on a woman without his surrogate John Edwards double teaming with him as we saw in the debate Saturday night. His game is to
use inspiring words so you won't notice his lack of experience. We just had 7 years
of a President people voted for because they thought they could have a beer with him
and he was such a nice guy......when will you all learn, the world is a mess....we
need someone who has life experience and living in the White House working with President Clinton gives us a President who can get to work on day one.
