All you had to know about the newly nominated second in command at the Justice Department, the Deputy Attorney General to AG Mukasey, is the final paragraph of a November 16 Chicago Tribune article: "After clerking for [Antonin] Scalia, [Mark] Filip returned to Chicago rather than stay in Washington and pursue the kind of career track that traditionally leads to a choice government appointment. He did, however, work as a volunteer Republican vote counter in Florida during the 2000 election recount."
Ah yes, how much fun the mainstream press is! Reading a "news" article is really like hunting for buried treasure. And then you have to connect the dots on your own.
Filip, who is currently a federal judge in the Northern Illinois District (Scalia swore him in), was appointed in 2004 to the bench by George W. Bush. And, as we recently noted in a series on Republican judicial appointments, they don’t put "freelancers" on the bench, just reliable partisan judges.
Also worthy of note in the Tribune article is this statement: "As a contender for the deputy job, it couldn't have hurt Filip that one of his close friends is Paul Clement, the U.S. solicitor general, and a rising legal star. Filip and Clement are part of a network of former Scalia clerks who keep in touch."
Good grief, it’s the Federalist Society cabal run amuck!
Meanwhile, in checking out Filip’s "close friend," Bush’s Solicitor General Clement, we discovered that Clement not only clerked for Scalia, he also spent time as a protégé under the infamous Laurence Silberman, who advised the Ken Starr crew on how to impeach Bill Clinton while serving on the D.C. Appellate Court.
It gets worse as far as Mark Filip’s good buddy. A January 16, 2004, Law.com article hailed that "Paul Clement leads the charge in defending the administration's tactics in the war on terror."
To be fair, the Chicago Tribune article was filled with lavish praise for what a resourceful, intelligent and hardworking attorney (and former prosecutor) Filip is. But that’s what we read about Alito, Roberts and – way back when – Scalia too.
We’d like to know more about Filip’s stint as a "volunteer Republican vote counter in Florida during the 2000 election recount," but do we really need to?
I think it’s safe to say that we’ve already connected the dots, and what we’ve got is someone who, once again, is a product of the Federalist Society – whether he is personally a member or not -- soldiers in the jurist army of the GOP.
Maybe the White House put Filip as second in command at the DOJ to watch over Mukasey.
But we doubt Mukasey will be running too far astray of the White House. Before he was appointed AG by Bush, Mukasey was the chief advisor to Rudy Giuliani on who he should appoint to the judiciary if he were to be elected president.
Are you getting the full picture now?
We are.

Impeachment
Impeachment is the only way in which America can be returned to the country of law we used to be.
Bush's and Cheney's criminal conspiracy must be addressed.
We need to pressure all members of Congress to support Kucinich's bill to impeach Cheney for the numerous crimes and violations of the Constitution he perpetrated and than address Bush for the same reasons.
the more things change...
The Federalist Society could loosely, but accurately, be described as the bastard grandchildren of Alexander Hamilton.
(This is a partisan and not necessarily accurate history, but it's close enough for government work.)
The Constitution was less than a dozen years old when Hamilton was busy trying to turn the US into a "world power" like Britain and the other "world powers".
In order to do this, they needed an enemy, and Hamilton and Adams chose France. To some degree they were terrified that the ideals of the French Revolution would be brought to these shores and our own ruling class might meet the guillotine.
It was total idiocy and paranoia , but it resulted in the Alien and Sedition Acts and the eventual arrest of Benjamin Franklin's grandson.
Hamilton was the Karl Rove of the time, and history more or less ignores the fact that he was a very nasty piece of work as a politician and as a person.
He slandered his opponents and when some of them felt forced to challenge him to a duel, he offered insincere, face-saving apologies. He got away with it because most of the people he smeared were not duelists and were reluctant to actually fight.
There is some historical agreement that Jefferson cut a deal with the Federalists to support him for the presidency (over Aaron Burr). Jefferson got the presidency and the Federalist cockroaches got to keep their jobs.
Even after Adams lost, Hamilton stayed with his usual tricks. He bit off more than he could chew when he insinuated that there was an incestuous relation between Burr and his daughter. (Burr's daughter by that time was married and I believe she had a son.)
Burr challenged Hamilton to a duel, and demanded a real apology - which was not forthcoming.
Hamilton stood up for the duel but announced his intention not to fire at Burr - a noble and honorable position which may or may not have been his true intention.
Both weapons were provided by Hamilton, and there is still a dispute over the claim that Burr's weapon was rigged to fire off to one side and miss.
In any case, Burr's shot hit Hamilton in the guts, and it took him a day to die.
Deprived of their leader, the Federalists wound up with diminishing political influence over the next three or four elections, but they kept their government jobs and were able to use their influence in the Judiciary to define a structure of law that has persisted throughout our history.
Despite his elitist views, Hamilton was not totally evil. He had a consistent sense of how a valid government and republic should work. He also had a strong sense that he and his peers should be the ones in charge.
Our current Federalist Society was set up to become an elite class that would rule through the judiciary.
By themselves they have limited power, but as part of a political revolution they have been able to subvert our entire structure of government.
The existence of the Federalist Society is not an accident. It was formed as part of the same effort that set up the Heritage foundation and the pseudo-think tanks that have developed intellectual respectability through the size of their bankrolls.
When a politician sells us out, we can replace him with someone marginally better. The Federalists will remain in power until they die, or until they completely discredit their own movement.
I can't take any more.
Is there anything more incestuous than a Republican? They never go away. They're like cockroaches. I think someone needs to start a website to hail (and notify) anytime a Republican dies. Jeeze. They just stay around. The same names come up over and over and over. The same connections come up and never go away. GOPhers make me sick and nervous. As they should any true blue (as opposed to red) American.
Is it 11/08 yet?
I CAN'T TAKE IT ANYMORE!
The Republican party
As us oldtimers know it is defunct. The last REAL Republican was Dwight D. Eisenhauer, who warned us in his book:"Mandate for a Change" of the military-industrial complex, for one thing. The name of the party of Lincoln, T. Roosevelt, and Eisenhauer has been "borrowed" by a vile gang of criminals who are well on their way to total consolidation of dictatorial powers and the destruction of everything our Founders dreamed was possible. Warnings from Jefferson, Madison, Paine, and B. Franklin, as well as Eisenhauer have been ignored, or worse, by those either ignorant of our history, or too dim-witted to see its signifigance.
I'll have to add impeaching Roberts to my daydream
Yes, I'll tuck "Impeach, convict for perjury, remove CJ Roberts" somewhere down the list after impeach/convict/remove Cheney; stall replacement; impeach/convict/remove Bush; and impeach/indict/imprison most of the Rethuglican Administration.
All those things will happen...
When hell freezes over, Democrats grow balls, and Rethuglicans discover ethics and morals.
Not Just Filip at DOJ, ROBERTS TOO! ROBERTS LIED UNDER OATH!
JOHN ROBERTS LIED UNDER OATH; HE CAN BE IMPEACHED: John Roberts worked on Bush v. Gore, with members of James Baker's team, in Georgia, holed up in some out of the way motel for EIGHT DAYS; he was seen doing so by various witnesses. This was reported by Florida newspapers. (Remember that the eight days in Georgia does not include the phone time he most likely racked up from his home.) Yet during his confirmation hearings, when he was questioned under oath regarding his involvement in the Bush v. Gore case, he claimed that he spent only "TWO HOURS" working on it... He was asked about this on two separate occasions during the hearings, and he said the same thing, denying any further involvement. People, John Roberts LIED to get himself onto the Supreme Court. He is now the Chief Justice. There has been a virtual blackout on this matter. For heaven's sake -- is anyone paying attention??? I've sent this info on to Buzz in the past, and they have posted the link to the news stories referenced above. We the People need to be reminded about this over and over. Roberts is not legitimate -- and he can be impeached!!
