Do You Agree with Dennis Kucinich's Decision to Vote for the Upcoming Healthcare Reform Bill in the House of Representatives?
BUZZFLASH DISCUSSION
Dennis Kucinich announced this morning that he would support the healthcare reform bill in the House of Representatives when the vote is called later this week. He had previously opposed this bill, because it is so badly compromised that he feels it is ineffective.
Do you think he made the right call? At least this way we can pass something. And as Michael Moore said this morning, if Obama fails here, he may never recover.
On the flip side, why should Kucinich support a bill that maintains the status quo of our healthcare system, and potentially do some harm? Is it wrong for him to vote for a bill which he maintains is a "sellout to insurance companies"?

Still for Kucinich
I am still for Kucinich,I am not for the Democratic party anymore.I will vote for any 3rd party that represents the people and not the corporations.Kucinich had his arm twisted by corporatist Obama who no doubt told him all funding would be pulled by the Democratic party and a corporate democrat run against him.Remember this is what the Democratic party did to the anti war candidate running against Lieberman.I figure Dennis rather then losing figured it was better to live and fight another day.although the fight is over.Dennis comes from a poor district and many of the poor were getting on him that they didn't have insurance and won't vote for him if he didn't pass this mess of a health care bill.I blame the Democratic party and the so called liberal media and his welfare constituants who supported this corporate mess with the dumb idea it can be reformed later.to all you stupid democrats who believe this, government is now owned by the corporations and they will not allow positive change.America is a facist nation and there is nothing we can do about it short of revolution or forming our own third party and hoping the crooked voting machines don't change your vote.So America, get use to goose stepping. Its not a little man in a moustach leading us its the corporations behind the scene ,they just got rid of the middle man.
You're saying Kucinich lied?
If Obama twisted Kucinich's arm and threatened to withdraw funding and run a primary challenge ...
... why did Dennis lie about it?
Sidestepping
Yeah, the democrats are the same as the others. I get weary of the avoidance of the real issues here. This bill is bad for people. I see no good in a formally officially sanctioned corporate take over of healthcare. I have admired Kucinich for courage and saying power. Now he's folding into the dough with the rest. I wish he had remained true to his convictions.
Even if the bill is tweaked after passage we will all still pay insurance companies to herd us into dangerous prescriptions and unnecessary x-rays, scans, surgeries and procedures. This is not healthcare. The younger healthier broker generation does not need a forced march into this "care". The real issues here include the current killing care, profiteering and lack of a sustainable healthcare model.
Thank you, Dennis
I aree that the Senate bill is garbage, but it's something, and that's better than nothing. I expect that much will be done to fix the worst problems via reconciliation, and I'm hoping that the Senate will add a robust public option, as well as a guarantee that states can pursue a single payer program individually.
Error: Logic Failure
"Something" is not necessarily better than "nothing".
Examples: Debt; Cancer; The trillion dollar armed robbery which is Obama-care.
Also, the Senate cannot make any changes. There will be no Public Option. There will be no Single Payer. Obama-Care is very careful to block even state-level Single Payer.
Dennis Kucinich
Once again, a politician(DENNIS) proved that his job is more important than principle.
Obama has proved that he can give an awesome speech, that should belong to someone else, because he can write the words and even say those words to us, but he has NO INTENTION of making those words a real life force.
By hiring who he's hired. By appointing who he's appointed(mostly right wingers, from a bag of so called Dems and rethugs, he has proved himself over and over that he believes in TRICKLE DOWN ECONOMICS...ALL OF THE THINGS HE PROPOSED DURING HIS CAMPAIGN turned out to be just a bunch of bullshit! We get it, we KNOW it...now WHAT DO WE DO ABOUT IT???
No, we can't trust the voting 'machines'. We can't trust the people who take our votes(as proved in Florida in 2000). But worst of all we can't even trust the people we do vote for...like Obama...who has done a 180, since he took office. All he's actually done is maintain what Bush set up for him...no new Federal Prosecutors, that he could have appointed when congress was out of session....for all of us paying attention...sorry, he's a pretty man, but he either has no backbone, or he's just another Rethug in Dem clothing...
EVERYONE is afraid to say it or even think it...but someday(probably not in my lifetime) people may come to their senses and realize that we will have to take back our country even if by force....YOU KNOW WHY?....BECAUSE those people in power...have our money TO PAY OUR MILITARY TO PROTECT THEM, AND CAN MAKE LAWS TO ENRICH THEMSELVES! SO unless we end up physically removing them ourselves, what other recourse do we have?
Et tu Dennis?
If even Kucinich has folded, what chance is there for the Democratic Party to ever work for the common good again? In "The Great Derangement," which came out in 2008 and appears to have been mostly written in 2007, Matt Taibbi explains very well how the corporatist Democrats spend so much of their energy, and play so many games, to fool their voters into thinking they are working for the common good and the interests of the majority. Just as the Republicans mostly just pay lip service to the issues of the Religious Right (with a few symbolic acts thrown in there from time to time, like the stem cell prohibition), the Democrats just pay lip service to the issues of the left.
Kucinich is nothing more than a tool
Obama sealed his fate when he reneged on every single part of his campaign rhetoric. He caters to the corporations and the banks while telling people we have to rein in our entitlements. Trying to balance the budget, or even reduce the deficit, while the majority of the country is still reeling from the financial chaos perpetrated against us by Bush's Treasury secretary Paulson and Geithner at the Fed, will only further erode the middle class.
Maybe he puts a lot of faith in the rising Dow, but that, too, is being manipulated by the Fed chairman and the president of the NYFRB.
Obama has secured his position as the only African-American president this country will ever have because no white independent voters are going to get taken by such jive shit again. He can get up and take off his jacket, roll up his sleeves, and sound all Martin Luther Kingy using rhetoric to make people think he understands their situations. But he's nothing but a cheap imitation and he deserves to be a one-term president before he has a chance to destroy Social Security, his real agenda.
Toast anyway
Democrats are toast anyway, they've taken a dive, they could have had victory but they were greedy - not stupid - not timid - not blind - but pretending to be stupid, timid, and blind. Democrats have not been stupid, timid, or blind in terms of pressuring and lying to Americans about the supposed benefits of their bad bill. Kucinich is merely making the leaset-worst move he could at this point. No bad bill and there's a 100% chance the Democrats are toast and the Neo-Cons once again get a chance to rob America blind and threaten our national security, with this bad bill there is only a 99% chance - Kucinich did what he could for us.
Go Re-read Citizens United
There is NO chance in Satan's Domain that the corporations are going to allow ANY changes to this corporatist crap masquerading as health care reform that doesn't materially benefit them. Dennis Kucinich will become Don Quixote, with Bernie Sanders acting as Sancho Panza, spending the rest of their careers tilting against the industry windmills which will never admit defeat.
A little more display of masculine attributes would have been in order here, Dennis. Political Death Before Dishonor. Instead, you can now be tabbed the Louis “Moses” Rose - the Coward of the Alamo - of real reform. Congratulations.
Kucinich just joined the Democratic Party suicide pact
Dennis got to play liberal until his vote actually made a difference. And then he folded like a cheap suit. We thought he was a man of principle but when at last his vote actually counted he turned out to be just another windbag.
Obama-care is not health care reform. It simply steals a trillion dollars for the health mafia from working and retired Americans. It's cleverly disguised in 2400 pages of loopholes but the only two parts that have any effect are the fines for those who can't afford insurance and the massive raid on Medicare. Think of Obama-care as a trillion dollar tax on the middling-poor (but not the very poor) with the proceeds going to the very rich.
Health insurance is not health care. Insurance with copays and deductibles up to $10K is not even close to health care. You'd damn well better pay your premium or you'll go to jail. But nobody expects or even wants you to be able to pay the copays and deductibles, so just don't expect any health care, OK?
Some argue that Obama-care can be improved down the line. They're either stupid or liars. The health mafia wouldn't allow improvements when they had a trillion dollars riding on the line. Now that they've got our trillion dollars there's no incentive at all for them to allow improvements. Every future amendment to Obama-care will make it worse.
Let's ask America's sole remaining investigative reporter for his analysis:
What you’re doing is forcing people to become customers of a product that is overpriced thanks to state protection. That’s using state power to guarantee private profits. Think of the possibilities once that precedent has been set.
I'll finish with a statement from the man himself. This is how he described the bill after agreeing to support it:
I do not think it is a first step toward anything I have supported in the past.
Public Option
You were up here saying the Public Option was terrible, it was a dumping ground, you Naderites were calling Kucinich a sellout for supporting the Public Option - you wanted him to hold out for Single Payer and OPPOSE the Public Option.
Single Payer
That is correct. Dennis and millions of other people supported Single Payer.
Dennis sold out, so now it's just millions of people who support Single Payer.
Politicians have sold out before. They do it all the time.
Dennis and Obama-care delay Single Payer - in particular by fining people in Single Payer states - but we got Medicare and we will get Single Payer and neither Dennis The Sell Out nor Cheney The Dick will stop us.
Public Option
duplicate
Nope!
I would have liked Kucinich to stick to his principles but one guy against all would have only the effect of one drop of rain. We all knew many months ago when Obama crapped out on the Public Option and even before that when Single Payer was not even on the table that there would be a lot of false hope thown our way and then in the end the corporations would win. The handwriting was on the wall.
I do know from listening to the people around me that if there isn't an alternative option to purchase insurance from somewhere besides the insurance industry by November, Democrats will be toast.
Between privatized electronic voting, Citizen's United, and our lives determined by the insurance companies whims, we are toast anyway.
This so called Health Care Bill was made in the back rooms with deals that had nothing to do with us, or any blog or grassroots organization. It is and never will be about 'US".
Healthcare Reform hahaha
1. This ISN'T HEALTHCARE REFORM. this is the plan by the Democrats in office to bully and push through an extremely, financially, beneficial payoff to the insurance companies, hoping the citezenry will applaud them and re-elect them.
If Congress was really interested in HEALTHCARE REFORM they would have started with the companies that manufacture all of those bad things like CORN SYRUP and put that shit into our food, like so many other substances that ultimately have very bad effects on the human body.
After reading quite a few posts here, most of what I see is people comiserating about how defeated they are and that the fight is over and WE THE PEOPLE HAVE LOST. BULLSHIT WE THE PEOPLE OWN THIS COUNTRY, NOT THE POLITICIANS WE PUT THERE IN EVERY STATE CAPITOL AND AT WASHINGTON D.C. to REPRESENT US. Not the corportocracy, not the lobbyists either. WE THE PEOPLE OWN THIS COUNTRY.
There is one thing everybody who is registered to vote can do to start to correct the problems of our CONGRESS. I will ask all registered voters to VOTE INDEPENDENT. Aside from some very interesting stats from surveys done in the past, that of all registered voters, the party that is the most patriotic is THE INDEPENDENTS. The other two parties tend to vote along party lines, whereas THE INDEPENDENT TENDS TO VOTE ON THE ISSUE. So one thing that can be accomplished through local means is that there should be local organizations and or groups that can keep the people informed about the political subject matter at hand, like healthcare.
It really is quite simple to figure out whom to vote for as an INDEPENDENT CANDIDATE. Here are the three questions that should be asked of the candidate in a public setting.
DO YOU AS AN INDEPENDENT AGREE TO LEAVE YOUR RELIGEON AT THE DOOR? YES OR NO?
DO YOU AS AN INDEPENDENT AGREE TO HONOR AND DEFEND OUR CONSTITUTION? YES OR NO?
DO YOU AS OUR ELECTED OFFICIAL AGREE TO LISTEN TO, AND WORK WITH AND FOR YOUR CONSTITUANCY? YES OR NO?
Notice that a simple yes or no in a public setting, with a lot of potential constituancy present forces the candidate to state their respective position on those three questions. if they do not answer in the affirmative with a simple yes or no answer, then you inform them at that public forum, that you will not be voting for them for two reasons.
1. They didn't listen to your question, which means that they cannot nessessarily be trusted to do their job that WE THE PEOPLE WOULD PUT THEM THERE DO DO. YOU KNOW SAY ONE THING DO ANOTHER.
2. FOR ALL OF THE REASONS ABOVE, LIKE TO NOT SAY YES IS A DIRECT VIOLATION OF OUR CONSTITUTION. I FOR ONE AM SICK AND TIRED OF POLITICIANS TALKING OUT OF BOTH SIDES OF THEIR MOUTH.
Another thing that WE THE PEOPLE MUST DO TO TAKE OUR COUNTRY BACK IS VOTE. I personally have relatives that say why should I vote? My vote doesn't count anyway. I tell them that their vote does count and until they start voting this mess will not be remedied. I also understand that in todays world, both parents working, kids getting sick, and just everyday life, there isn't enough time to do anything else. I agree, but most people can get access to a computer or the internet, and recieve emails or posts from groups and organizations that will keep them relatively informed so that when it is time to vote people have a better understanding of the issues to vote on. I call it AWARENESS. These are just some of the obsticles in our way, but WE THE PEOPLE CAN AND WILL GET THROUGH THIS BECAUSE THIS IS AMERICA. What would people think that generations from the past would tell us if they came back and saw this mess? Through the hypervely one message would surface. TAKE YOUR COUNTRY BACK. YOU LOST IT OR GAVE IT UP NOW TAKE IT BACK. we the people can and will do this if it takes decades or longer
I am now and always have been a registered Independent voter. I do not believe in this two party system because it has become corupt from both sides of the isle, and the traitors in office like Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid as well as Barrak Obama, whom I voted for last time but will not again, must be removed. If AMERICA doesn't wake up and WE THE PEOPLE DON'T start taking care of business, SAY GOODBYE TO OUR GREAT DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC. I HOWEVER AM AN AMERICAN DAMN IT, AND I WILL GO DOWN FIGHTING FOR MY FREEDOMS, RIGHTS AND YES RESPONSIBILITIES.
You're Kidding!
The Independent Party isn't really that. So many Republicans have left their party because it is now the party of imbeciles. Just because a candidate is an Independent, doesn't make him/her any better. Joe Lieberman is an Independent.
The problem is the MONEY, and the Supreme Court just made that worse.
The only question left is
The only question left is how do the people get their government back?????
I Will Always Support Kucinich
I like to think if I were in his shoes I would have held out until the final day and really tortured the president. But we don't know what the president is threatening Kucinich with either.
I hold Obama totally responsible for this sell out. It's a rotten bill. And if it cost him his presidency?
Let it be so. He bought it when he invited the thieves into the parlor and kicked the liberals out.
I voted for Obama. I won't do it again.
I would, however, vote for Kucinich any time I get a chance.
Yes, I do agree with Kucinich.
Better a not-so-good bill than none. It can always be improved.
Not so good is OF COURSE A
Not so good is OF COURSE A VERY GENEROUS description of this sellout bill, but I agree, however I don't believe that a bill that is going to get repealed, could be improved.
Dreamer!
Citizens United's gonna get you!
It's gonna knock you in the head!
Best forget about your health care!
They're gonna stall until you're dead!
Why should they give you any care?
Nothing that they do is really fair!
What makes you think they're gonna hear
Your pain and fear? There's PROFIT, dear!
You will get shined on
Like the fools they believe deserve none
You will get shined on
On and on and on on on!
(As any Lennonist will tell you!)
What is your point?
Why are you asking if we feel like Kucinich made the right decision? What point are you trying to make? Did you not run an earlier editorial about how sad it is for progressives to split one against the other? Kucinich made his decision and I assume he can live with it so let it go already. Look, what has become clear throughout this long, long tedious process of 'passing health care reform' is that (a) Obama has ensured a failed presidency (b) the majority of Democrats have proven themselves to be unwilling to fight (c) it has become clear that corporations own our politics. This is not about Dennis Kucinich. He fought for the people but the Democratic party pulled a no support stance on him and privately put pressure on him and a few others (Grayson, perhaps?) to 'go along to get along'. There is no answer here. We are stuck with a bag of elephant shit called health care reform; Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid will proclaim a victory and the American people will still have their medical needs subject to the profit targets of corporate America. There is no battle here; we've lost. Wake the fuck up!

How Corporatist!
Did you borrow that reply from Aetna? Cigna? Wellpoint?
D Kucinich vote
This bill is a wellfare bill to the insurance industry. It is just another way to transfer public money to private insurance Robberbarons! To mandate the US population to buy a product without a non-profit option should be illegal! States mandate auto insurance but have a state-run option. This is just a different way to "privatise" what should be a government issue.
Kucinich, who I admire, should not have caved. But I hold Move-on, Daily kos, HuffPo, and the "left" who cowed him, guilty!
He should have held out
1. This bill is worse than useless.
2. Passing this bill will be used as an excuse to not fix anything else for another 40 years.
3. Who gives a crap about Obama? Until and unless he and the rest of the conservative democrats figure out that they WILL lose every time they blow off the liberal base to appeal to wealthy donors, nothing will get fixed at all.
We're supposed to support Obama browbeating our friends and caving in to our enemies? I think not.
The Democrats Have Now Permanently Lost My Support
Since 1980, I have voted third party, only returning to the Democrats to support Gore and Kerry (and having my vote negated by Diebold each time) in the effort to block George W Bush.
Those days are over. I will never again vote for a Democrat, even if I have to write in someone deserving rather than vote Democratic again. Kucinich's reversal was the last straw. He was the last Democrat I respected, and now he's betrayed me.
Enough is enough.
Kucinich Vote
At the very least, he should insist on states rights on creating their own single-payer systems.
It is just wrong for ERISA to prohibit states to go that route.
Ed
Kucinich vote
Kucinich is perhaps the most principled person in the Congress and I am surprised he switched. I'm even more surprised Michael Moore says to hold your nose and vote for it.
Kucinich: I'd guess a) he figures something is better than nothing and he'll keep fighting for some real improvement; b) he was contacted by Obama and both Senate and House Dem leaders who gave an ironclad guarantee that reconciliation will materially improve the final product (why he'd trust them, you'll have to ask him); c) maybe, just maybe, he's worried about getting no support, no money, a primary challenge, and maybe even real opposition from his own party, and not getting reelected--though he's always won handily in his district both in primaries and general elections. It wouldn't be a good campaign motto to have to say "my vote kept any reform from passing and rendered Obama a eunuch."
That said, with even more disgust than expressed by Michael M, I very reluctantly also now think they ought to pass this bad bill and then we have to keep fighting like hell for real reform. I blame the debacle squarely on Obama, who gave up single payer before the debate even began; bad, stupid move. I've followed this (written Congress many times, worked in my state for a single payer initiative, given money for years, talked to anyone who would listen, asked politicians in public forums, etc.) for 30 years and never have the polls shown less than a strong majority of voters in favor of universal care/single payer, always running over 60% and sometimes--depending on how the questions are asked--hitting 70% or more. So, our brilliant political tactician president ran away from a position favored by 2/3 of voters--who owns him?
Archaeo
That's my question!
WHO owns Obama? From his past and present speeches you'd think he understood what the average American deals with...But it all looks like a front to me! Because he expresses one idea and then makes excuses for what is not happening, as if he can't do a damn thing! Look at that asshole Bush, he lied and took almost all our civil rights away in the name of terror! No one did a damn thing to stop him! The stupid asshole should be in the Hague by now...but no. Obama wants to 'move on'! I thought just maybe he wanted to be above it all...but with this republican style 'HEALTH' bill that gives money to the corporations...I am revolted!..AND I REALIZE THAT ALL WE GOT IS ANOTHER RETHUG IN THE WHITE HOUSE!
...And the talk show (PROGRESSIVE?) pundits, like Ed Schultz and Stephanie Miller keep trying to tell us, that after they vote on this bill that CONGRESS WILL start working on Medicare for all. Do these people think we are all idiots??? If the CONGRESS couldn't even get the public option ( you remember that idea that Obama said in his campaign was the only thing that would make health insurance affordable by having REAL COMPETITION ) through with reconciliation,..WHAT MAKES THE PUNDITS THINK this congress is going to get Medicare for all (univeral health care) passed?????
AS ALEX BENNETT ( a midnight radio show ) says ' we have nothing more than a mandate that we MUST PAY private insurers whatever money they ask for' ( and we HAVE to pay what amount they come up with) OR WE WILL PAY A FINE TO THE GOVERNMENT!..AND UNTIL THIS STARTS IN 2013 HOW MUCH WILL THEY HAVE RAISED THEIR RATES BY THEN???...OH and the other thing is, the poor health insurers must provide health insurance to those of us with a pre-existing condition...but what they don't mention is...we'll be paying through the ass for that 'special' !!!
BETCHA OBAMA WON'T BE WORKING FOR HABITAT FOR HUMANITY WHEN HE GETS OUT OF OFFICE....He'll probably with sucking Bush's dick, just like Clinton does!
I GUESS I JUST HATE REPUBLICANS INABILITY TO CARE...AND i FEEL OBAMA IS HOLDING THE NAIL, WHILE THE REPUBLICANS .ARE HAMMERING THE COFFIN OF AMERICA.
