   The actual question to be asked is, "Does a government have the right to prohibit people from protecting themselves?" Thousands of street murders occur every year in America. Defenseless victims who relied on police protection are merely given a free ride to the county morgue by those "protectors".

   I knew a man who had been stopped by the police for a traffic violation. On searching his car, the officer found a loaded handgun in the glove box. The officer asked the man why he was carrying a gun. The man expained that he was on his way to pick up a date in a very crime-ridden area and answered the officers' question with a question of his own, "Would you go into the projects (a high-rise slum) without a gun?" The officer answered honestly, "No way." With that the officer returned the gun and wished the motorist a good evening.

   That is a true story that quickly illustrates the point. A citizen who has no right to protect himself is a victim waiting for a crime.
