Did the Kabuki Theater of the Healthcare Summit Convince Ordinary Americans to Support Reform?
BUZZFLASH DISCUSSION
According to pretty much every piece of analysis floating around in the aftermath of Thursday's healthcare summit at Blair House contends that zero votes have shifted from the Republican column of "No" to being open to voting for healthcare reform.
If anything, the obstinacy of the GOP merely emboldened Democrats to seek the bill's passage via reconciliation.
Still the GOP is trying to convince anyone who will listen that the American people don't like this bill. Public opinion has tilted against the overall bill by a slight margin prior to the summit. However, when Americans are asked poll questions about specific measures in the bill, they are much more supportive.
What we're wondering is whether or not the kabuki theater of the healthcare summit worked to convince ordinary Americans to support the bill. What do you think? If Obama and the Democrats couldn't convince Republicans, did they at least make their case to the American people (finally)? Or was this stunt too little, too late for the embattled effort to secure public support for affordable healthcare for all?

3 f---ing weeks of wasted time
The Democrats have succeeded again, they helped the Conservatives by wasting about 3 weeks, so it was a successful summit. What cute excuse will they come up with to delay the wrath of American voters 3 more weeks. Bi-Partisanship is Conservatism. Bi-Partisanship is Conservatism.
If you sat through the whole thing...
which I didn't--I watched the MSNBC and listened to Pacifica radio summaries--it's obvious the GOP will enforce their conformity rules and only the most wayward Republicans might vote for parts of it, which will be damn few votes. I'm surprised they even showed up after Obama wiped the floor with them at the previous meeting on GOP territory, but they were embarrassed and dared into it and still couldn't show up with any sort of coherent program of their own, other than "best health care system in the world" BS and lockstep "throw it out and start over ... clean sheet of paper ... step by step" nonsense. Oh, and "the vast majority of Americans are happy with their health coverage" which fits Hitler/Goebbels' maxim that huge lies are more readily believed than small--please, show me any evidence that most Americans are happy with the way it is now! My wife's retired and I buy our insurance on the 'open market' so our rates went up 18% last month and 24% the previous January. You can bet I'm ever so happy.
To the point: no, yesterday's kabuki probably had no effect for more public support of reform. I think the battle lines are firmly drawn and few wander to the other side at this point. People are so polarized and get more so by clinging to their favorite 'fair and balanced' news sources; the issue is too complex and boring for many to research thoroughly or independently. Republican propaganda has had the desired effects, so no matter how completely untrue and distorted what they say is, they'll keep saying it. I remember reading before he took office that Obama and staff were studying how the Clintons failed so utterly to reform health care in 93 to learn how to do it better, but the lessons must have been marginally useful as we've seen the Dems floundering so badly--which was completely predictable when Obama took single-payer off the table, his best bargaining chip, before the tussle even began. I've followed this for 35 years and throughout, single-payer has enjoyed majority support, ranging past 2/3 of voters for much of the time, but as only the people want it, it's off the table. Stupid start leads to stupid outcome.

While we braced ourselves to see just what Obama's underlining meaning of so many mysterious attempts at Bi-partisianship were, now we see that his reconciliation process justification is concrete, but with no compaign promised Public Option (healthcare for everyone). The GOP have been obstructionist on All Obama policies from the start and don't hesitate to openly wish his failure without regard for the american people's plight whether it's unemployment benefits or 4,000 deaths per year of the uninsured, it's obvious they are bought off by the campaign contributions/kickbacks of industry lobbyist/corporations. The GOP (Bush) appointed SCOTUS(3 Neocons) have made matters worst lifting campaign contribution limitations and enabling further corruption and this is flaunted arrogantly in Washington. GWB / GOP used the reconciliation process constantly with no bi-partisian interest at all to advance a Globalist\Elitist agenda. It's appearent now expecially with No public option or Medicare expansion that this figurehead (Obama) is Bush3 on many fronts particularly his lack of the public option even thru Reconciliation. His pandering with the criminals of the last regime thru repeated appointments (R. Gates & Fed. Chairman), further excusing from prosecution warcrimes that made us hated so (J. Woo) and being more loyal to continued development of the Beast (Military Industrial Complex) thru the bottomless defence budget and continued human/financial support of 2 illegal wars in Afghanistan/Iraq that are financed (loans from China) against our kids futures devaluing our currency/economy even more simultaneously. He doesn't have the interest of the working middleclass as top priority now that he's in office and this is without regard to the result...Americans continuing to die and suffering financially until they do while internationally Creating more terrorist/insurgents that want to destroy us thru continued sanctioned drug dealing(Karzai Brother on CIA payroll), weapons sales(US #1 salesman Intl.) and allowing proliferation and hypocracy on the Nuclear issue in the middle east and the blind eye and lack of sanctions on Isreal for blockades starving the palestianians as we speak and the use of white phospherous on civilians in Palestine in January(war crime). He too is bought off and guilty of both war crimes. He simply isn't changing the Washington culture as promised during the campaign...He's cotowing the line and is Also complicit! Simply the American people have overwhelmingly supported the public option but no group in congress does, rather factions of politicians not corrupted do but without the direction and leadership of this president, they have no effective voice to counter the Wicked, Corrupt minnions of the devil that occupy the elected offices of Congress by the supposed representatives of the people that put them there. Change is gonna come but by devine intervention and the prophetic revelations of the bible. Remember Rome, Russia, Babylon, Sodom And Gommorrah and now America as our world and lives will forever be changed as history has a tendency to repeat itself over and over for the ignorant and wicked! lilhistorian
Criminal
To mandate that people buy into the predatory and flawed business that health insurance has become is utter bullshit!
But the cats were crying to be fed.
"Affordable healthcare for all" really isn't the case. I'm self-insured and self-employed. When I looked at what my insurance rates would be under the bill, they were raised by 75%. A lot of families and individuals strapped for cash a lot worse than myself are going to be forced to buy insurance or be fined. This wonderful bill that we should all appreciate and support won't go significantly into effect until at least 2014. Meanwhile, most of us adults have to worry about getting jacked around by rate hikes and could have the carpet pulled out from under our feet by a number of industry antics, like declaring pre-existing conditions. Though I applaud that the criminal practice of denying care to children because of pre-existing conditions will be eliminated in a short time.
So if the bill will have to be passed by reconciliation, then President Obama could cooperate with members of the senate and congress to include a public option or extension to Medicare. Fat chance on that, Obama apparently sealed the deal in some back room deals last year. He wouldn't want to backpedal that much from his commitments with the insurance industry, but he will with the American people who are largely responsible for him being in office.
So the fat cats of Blue Cross and all the other major insurance corporations are going to engorge themselves on Obama's Fancy Feast of subsidies and mandates. And they'll have more than enough left over to feed the lobbyists as they prowl about through the halls of the Senate, Congress, and onto the screens of the media to subvert any future hope of single-payer or public option alternatives.
I still think that
the health"care" "reform" as it is currently structured and being considered is a travesty. It will amount to just another privatization scam, a crime against the American People, if passed. If they are going to do anything by reconciliation, then do universal single payer/medicare for all per the terms of HR 676. And, while they're at it make it mandatory that the government use it's purchasing power to obtain reasonable drug prices or allow patients to import their drugs. And while they are are it, regulate big pharma the same way that public utilities are regulated. For profit healthcare is an obscenity and it is long past time that the gangsters who run the health insurance rackets were put out of business. If the GOPer's and Bribe-O-crats don't like it, screw 'em, they are nothing more than a collection of malignant sociopaths who are only in office for their own personal gain. They are irrelevant to anything that matters.
Pieces make up the whole
As long as the mandate is in place, and the public option and controls on the industry are not, then there is still no bill worthy of support in position to be passed.
