Jon Stewart Lambasted Obama For Being Less Transparent Than Promised. Has Obama Disappointed You in Regards to Transparency?

A BUZZFLASH DISCUSSION
by Chad Rubel

Jon Stewart says people don't get the news from "The Daily Show," but he proved once again late last week that the show is keeping an eye on the issues the MSM ignores. No, it wasn't Mark Sanford or Iran or Mark Sanford (how about that Mark Sanford?).

Stewart devoted a whole segment on Thursday to some guy named Barack Obama, and how his promises of transparency haven't been, well, transparent.

Some of the video highlights were scattered among the several months Obama has been in office. Not releasing CIA interrogation tapes. Not having Web sites to track the stimulus up and running. Not wanting to release record about missing Bush Administration e-mails. And the favorite, not releasing logs of who visits the White House.

Some of these actions may stem from a candidate running for president and then becoming president. But one of the biggest defenders of some of what Bush did is President Obama. Whether it's a president protecting a "president" or some higher point, this looks bad.

Do you agree that the White House is supporting more or less transparent policies than you had expected? Is it too early to judge? Do you like the direction it's going so far? Let us know what you think in the comments below.

A BUZZFLASH DISCUSSION

has 'O' disappointed ????

somehow,in our elation at seeing bush/cheney depart, most everyone seems to have overlooked the diebold and es&s voting machines !!! these same ones who voted obama in ... duuuh ... and who do we have behind this 'president' ? zbigniew zybrzinski and david rockefeller, primarily.and his first staff selection upon being elected ? rahm emanuel ! zbig brother, rahm emanuel .... pretty evil.anyone read any of zbig's writings,or david rockefeller's ? watch out ! my thinking is that the charismatic obama will be going on to greater things than u.s. president, the face of some world government organization yet to come.it is kind of coming at us from many fronts.good luck to all .....

How can anyone be 'disappointed...?

All that Obama said was "hope" and "change"! Never said what or whose hope and change can be pennies to ninetynine cents. Early on we "hope"-ed ,and would have liked bush/cheney to take an early leave so "HE" could start right in. We got puppies. Its into the seventh month and there is no line anywhere for all the infrastructure jobs that have kicked in. As for "change" we got something between nil to small. Or if you look at the foreigh invasions less than nil. The key to any of that is too know how and why we got to the mess we are in putting on blinders and looking 'foreward' is asking to be kicked in the ass. How and why 911~!

JOHN STEWART

Don't be silly, of course Obama has disappointed me. And he'll do it again. But at least he's not that moronic frat-boy tool who abused us, our money, and our Constitution for eight solid years, so let's wait and not holler too hard before we're hit...too hard. The thing is, we who elected Obama know - finally - that we wield huge power, but ONLY if we stick together. So let's give the guy the right to be right during the next 3+ years by not sounding like Republicans every time we open our yaps, or lap-tops. Wish hiim well, and watch him carefully, that's the ticket. We Be Strong.

I'm only dissappointed in people of the US

People in general never fail to dissappoint me. I am always dissappointed in how quickly people turn on the things they supported or how impatient, demanding, judgmental and vengful, and greedy the people in the US have become. I even gave George Bush more of a chance than 5 months (and I thought he was a total nimrod), and later found out he spent the first half of his first term in office vacationing, playing golf and just doing "fun stuff". I'd say compared to what we had the past 16 years, even the past 5 months is more transparent, just because we even know enough information to have controversy and get all upset about every move Obama makes. I am proud of people in our country who stand up and say when they think something is wrong, but I am dissappointed in the constant nagging, bickering and gossip that has become our daily news, or discussion. It's like people want everything to turn out bad so that they can keep bitching and moaning how bad everything is all the time, and they want to blame someone else everything. When people bitched about the Bush administration in the early months all the right wing mouth pieces called them "un-American" and "un-patriotic"- so, what's the difference now? We don't always get everything we want, because sometimes it isn't good for us... complete transparency is simply something people can't really handle, we are still caught in mob mentality and unable to reason and see the bigger picture, we are extremely selfish as a people. No I am not dissappointed in Obama trying to get some work done without all the obstructionists yelling about his every syllable, why would someone think a politician is going to come in and change everything in even 1 year.. there are too many big corporate interests and religious groups who have had power the past 8 years vowing not to let that happen, and therefore it is not going to be easy to change things or to get things done quickly. We might need to consider that there are some things that people just shouldn't know about, because they are uncapable of making non-fearful, non-selfish decisions about the future- that's just that.

Compared to what we had ...

the last 16 years, even the past 5 months is more transparent?

What the hell is that supposed to mean?

Transparency by Obama?

With Obama's soft opposition to congressional republicans on healthcare and his coverup of Bush's several policies, look to see Mr. Obama's tenure to be no more than 4 years. There are other democratic representatives of the middle class who can do a better job. Another democrat, never another republican!

I didn't really expect that much, ...

... but is there any area Obama hasn't disappointed?

Told Ya So

Obama's a liar

I won't vote again. I'm 59 and a huge bush hater so I fell for Obama and his lies of upholding the law and changing gov for the people. He's a liar. I'm through with all of it. Once and for all. Thanks for asking my opinion. I appreciate the chance to vent and get it out.

Obama lack of transparency.

I am very disappointed with President Obama by his lack of transparency and his apparent embracing of the bogus Unitary Executive theory of governance. Obama has got to be made to realize that when we voted for him, we voted AGAINST the secrecy of the Bush Regime and FOR more openness from the Executive Branch. Obama has got to quit being concerned about Republican criticism and become far more concerned about those that put him into the White House.

Has Obama Disappointed You in Regards to Transparency?

I realize that it is one thing to think what one can do when one gets a job and what one can actually do when one is on the job. President Obama has made a few decisions I would have liked to have seen made differently, however, I am amazed at how much he has actually accomplished in the short time he has been in office. It seems to me that the media is still too focused on selling the news rather than presenting the content of the news. There is a happy medium that has not even been attempted to be reached by the media. I live in Phoenix, AZ, where at present members of our State Legislature have lost their collective minds. The Arizona Republic is so busy pandering to the Republicans that they have forgotten what there jobs should be and how to do their jobs. Buzzflash and the Huffington Post, to name a few, criticize President Obama far more than you show any kind of thankfulness that he has done a more than magnificent job so far. I know that it isn't nearly as interesting to give praise when earned; however, it is far more satisfying. Try is sometime!!!!

Disappointed???

You bet! NOTHING I expected from Obama's promises has come to pass, while almost everything I feared has.

it's simple - Obama lied

He lied intentionally - there is nothing else to be said. He knew we would vote for him once - and we did. He is a bit better than Bush, much worse than Clinton (either one).

Total Loser

Total disappointment. But then again I was smart enough to know that Obama is an insider. He is part of the problem and not the solution. The only real "change" I see is that he is Black on the outside. But White on the inside. I think that's called an Oreo. What choice was there? McAnus/Failin? I live in Melanoma Johnny's carpetbagged state and know exactly what he is all about. Amerika is through. It's gone. Wasted. Done. Get over it. We are serfs to the corporations and the Chinese own us. Why bother?

Huge disappointment

Obama is Bush-lite.

"Has Obama Disappointed You ..."

Big time.

Where is the hope anymore?

Obama Not living up to campaign promises

As with most elections and those elected... what you get aint what you're promised. The status quo is still in effect. Those with the money are getting the rewards even tho' it was us 'little' people that went to the streets to get the old thrown out. We're stuck with the same ol' same ol'. Empty promises and assurances that its 'somebody else's fault' that things aren't changing. Maybe we ought to try a Honduran type of 'election.'

Jon Stewart

You have to watch Jon Stewart ,I really used to like him ,but now he is trying to be a "FUNNY" Rush Limbaugh.I am afraid he has jumped the Democratic fence to the other side

Funny?

There is no such thing as a funny Rush Limbaugh.

Stewart has not endorsed the

Stewart has not endorsed the Bush=Gore party line, Stewart has not said enough to qualify as progressive enough for the Bush=Gore crowd - I agree with what Stewart did say 100%. I think its ridiculous to with-hold the torture pictures, if the Republicans dont give something back in return, since when did the Army make military decisions based on protecting the safety of the troops?

obama

I'm thinking the entire US government is obligated to Goldman Sachs. Why is that? Why so much power? So much "change" it looks a lot like the same old, same old. Oh well, there is nothing we can or will do about it.

YOU CAN DO SOMETHING

Stop voting for Republicans AND Democrats.

If he opens his mouth,

If he opens his mouth, they'll stop giving his daughters the antidote...

Something stinks.

...or his master plan is more complex than we know.

...Nah. Something stinks.

Obama

Obama has disappointed me. Period. He can, however, string together more than 3 words that make sense. Lucky us.

Obama transparency.

dalandis It's beginning to look like Obama's spine has been softened and he's getting just like Harry Reed and he's protecting the "War Criminals".You send e-mails and you get back essentially..."we're busy".

This is It

This is it for me. I am almost 60 and came of age during the 60s. I have tried to maintain my optimism and idealism in what I believed my government should be doing FOR We, the People. I have voted in every Presidential election always believing that the politicians would actually conduct themselves like statesmen and do what is BEST for We, the People. I am tired of having no choice but to vote for the lesser of two evils. That has been the choice for at least the last 30 years or so going back to the 80s. Our country has gone to hell in a handbasket and the road to hell is paved with good intentions. Stewart can say what he wants. The bottom line is he (and Colbert) put out more factual news reporting than does the MSM. A sad commentary on our national psyche.

Stewart is the only real news on TV

The lack of transparancy in the Obama White House is alarming. His embracing of GW Bush's policies -to the extent of even doing a "signing statement is not the "change" I voted for, nor is it "change I can believe in". I had better see some backbone and committment to his campaign promises or he will be a one-term President. I, and millions of others will not vote to re-elect him, given his current course and trajectory. We voted for him because we believed he had the courage to challenge the entrenched powers and the "permanent government". Makes me wonder, how did they get to him?????

How did they get to him?

I may sound like a conspiracy theorist, however, after 20 years of this crap, I think they got to Obama long before the primaries! He was a Dark Horse in a sense, no one thought he'd make it.... And maybe Hillary did have a legitimate beef? I don't trust the rich, Democrat, Republican, Independent or whatever. Too many millionares in our Government; Federal and State...and depending on where you live, local too. Nancy Lynn TN --Home of the real president

Just read the Rolling Stone July article by Matt Taibbi

"The Great American Bubble Machine" (not the first article on this very subject)...Goldman Sachs runs this country, caused the first depression and just about every recession, plus the current economical collapse..and what does President Obama do...? Nothing..had a chance for real reform...but couldn't get enough interest from the "Best Democracy money can buy" Congress..and maybe he didn't really have the inclination...just he like doesn't seem to be inclined to prosecute torture, stop the illegal wiretapping, or stand for real Health Care reform, etc...another weak sister President...a black Bill Clinton, afraid of Wall Street (look at his "financial advisores, all former Goldman Sachs CEO's and Executives)....fooled again..and what do we do?...pull our heads into our shells..and pretend

Can't figure him out

I don't know what it is, but Obama sure has his own style. I can't quite figure him out. I mean Bush was easy...... the dumb prez facade with Cheney behind the scenes. Not quite sure about Obama. I voted for him; for his stand on the issues, such as torture. He breaks his promises on some issues and then turns around and keeps his promise on others. Strange. But for the most part I am disappointed in Obama. I never expected him to follow Bush's war drum to Afghanistan among other things. In his first year and term is the time for him to be bold. I've never seen a Republican afraid of doing so. Is he breaking his promise for transparency? Yes. Nancy Lynn TN --Home of the real president

I posted this earlier, it's still apropos

I have a severe case of buyer's remorse when I think of President Barack Obama: I thought I was getting a Wellstone Democrat but when I got home and opened the box, I found I'd bought a Rocekfeller Republican.

I'm not voting for this guy again. I'll set out the 2012 election.

If the wealthy assholes who run this country are bound and determined to drive it to Hell in a handbasket, we might as well have a really stupid asshole of a Republican at the wheel. At least the suffering wouldn't last as long.

Anyone for Palin?

Sigh ......

I have to admit I share many of your sentiments regarding Obama. Still, he is a bright guy taking the country in a better direction both domestically and internationally. He inherited a ginormous pile of
sh!t from the neocon thugs who stole the two previous elections, so he probably deserves a little more time and patience.

I doubt we will see a Paul Wellstone Democrat in the White House in our lifetimes. Neocons have worked for decades laying an extremely effective foundation for controlling the media and thereby the masses. Americans either don't have the time or the desire to investigate issues; they rely on TV for their daily ten minutes of news, and like it or not, FAUX has been a tool extraordinaire for the right wing. It's primary role has been one of distraction, keeping the American public so focused on non-issues (abortion, gay rights, etc.) that they do not pay attention to the real issues that affect their lives. And when they finally do sit up and take notice, FAUX uses outright lies to keep any potential outrage in check.

Politics is no longer about the truth or what's best for America and Americans. It's about who can best control the masses to win elections. When Rethugs win, corporate America prospers, the middle class shrinks, and the poor are ignored. When Dems win, there is at least some attempt to make things better. Paul Wellstone, Dennis Kucinich, etc. would espouse truly moral values and allow this country to achieve real prosperity and greatness, which is why it is so sad that someone cut from that cloth no longer has any chance to be elected in corporate owned America.
.

Jon Stewart

Jon Stewart seems to always hit the nail on the head. I voted for Obama, and once again am disappointed in who I voted for. It seems now that my vote just went for the lesser of two evils. I'm going to give him his 3 1/2 years, but if all this secret stuff seems to still be in place ala GWB then he will never get my vote again. This from a progressive who actively campaigned for this TOOL!

Jon Stewart

You have my promise that I will not vote for this guy or any major party candidate ever again. If I cannot find another party I will just sit out the elections.

Transparency

I completely agree with the comments on lack of keeping this campaign promise and that the congressional leadership is pathetic at best. Our government is, in my opinion, seriously broken and I see little or no hope of a fix. While I like the change in tone that Mr. Obama has made he has so far not done what he was elected to do. Ditto the congress.

Obama transparency

Disappointed? Yes. Ready to give up on him? Not yet. Although the Honduran situation could be the make-or-break with me.

Obama Transparency

Tom Far less transparency than I expected. This BS about not going after the previous administration has got to stop. The visitor logs, torture tapes, emails, the bailout meetings...and on and on. It's time for Barack to call in the Democratic leadership, say "I'm the President, we don't need 60 votes in the Senate, and here's the deal...". Perhaps it's time for some change in congressional leadership as well. Harry Reid still needs smelling salts whenever the Republicans speak; Nancy Pelosi should be able to face down John Boehner and his cabal, but won't. This is the time to send a blast of political fresh air and sunlight into Washington.

change

yeah it sounded good, but so far he hasnt changed much and transparency is not on his agenda nor is it a part of his foundation as listed at http://www.whitehouse.gov/issues/ but i'm sure there are plenty of obama apologists that will disagree with me

i can't figure out why people would be disapointed

really. as a student of politics with a masters in the subject, i am surprised that anyone is disappointed. i could and did predict that obama would do exactly as he has done. the pres and the congress are owned whores of big business. they are rented out to lower paying johns and finally to the people if there is enough time on the clock and the other johns aren't buying at the minute. being disappointed by their constant failure to do as the people want is the quintessential definition of crazy... doing the same thing and expecting different results. they are what they are. whores. get used to it. get over it. and figure out how to get around it. or fire them for real. americans have sold their birth rights by allowing this to go on and on... when we are ready to do what it takes to dismiss the corporate kings and their whores then they will no longer have the power to control things. as long as they know we aren't really ready to behead them, we can eat cake. gypsy

Huh?

Huh? I doubt you have a "masters" in anything. At least use sentence structure. I even doubt a high school degree.
