Dave Lindorff: Conyers Puts Abuse of Power 'On the Table'
Speaker Nancy Pelosi may have taken impeachment "off the table," but House Judiciary Chair John Conyers (D-MI) is about to put it back on the menu.
Conyers may have been blocked by a timid Pelosi from initiating impeachment hearings immediately into President Bush's crimes against the Constitution, but he's taken the first step anyway, with the anouncement of plans to hold hearings into what is surely the President's gravest abuse of power.
The congressman, a veteran of the Nixon impeachment hearings who recently published a book on Bush's crimes, today announced plans to have his Judiciary Committee hold hearings on Bush's rampant use of so-called "signing statements." These are the documents the president has claimed give him the power, as a commander-in-chief, to ignore laws duly passed by the Congress.
Bush has used this bogus claim to ignore all or parts of some 1,200 laws
passed by Congress. He has done it willfully, and he has done it
deceptively, often adding the signing statement saying he will be ignoring a law after having first hosted a friendly photo-op signing session at which he offer no indication that he had any problem with a measure.
The first Judiciary Committee hearing is set for January 31.
Hopefully this will be followed by more Judiciary hearings into the
president's other high crimes and misdemeanors.
Readers should encourage Conyers in his efforts, and urge him to follow
through, by sending messages of support to John Conyers.

This could be deja-vu all over again!
Even though Speaker Pelosi does not want to deal with impeachment right off, I think Mr. Conyers is doing the right thing because the process of investigating those "Signing Statements" should help the general public to understand just how serious the excesses of the Bush administration have been. Mr. Conyers "Signing Statement" investigation should put the Impeachment of Mr. Bush squarely back on the table.
As for Mr. Cheney, based on news from the beginning of the "Scooter" Libbey trial, Mr. Cheney might be looking at a criminal prosecution of his own, for quarterbacking the "outing" of Valorie Plame. Apparently "Scooter" was not willing to quietly fall on his sword. Mr. Cheney might soon be facing his own prosecution. That prosecution could come before Congress gets around to Impeaching Mr. Bush. A criminal prosecution and conviction would remove Mr. Cheney from the Presidential succession list, the same way Vice President Agnew was removed from the Presidential succession list by a criminal prosecution and conviction during the Nixon administration.
So look for some neocon loyalist who will be groomed to become the heir apparent. He or she would be appointed by GW, to replace Mr. Cheney. But expect some under the table deal to pardon both Bush and Cheney moments before the next elected President is due to be sworn in, similar to the way President Ford pardoned Mr. Nixon, and for the same lame reason -- "to heal the wounds caused by the impeachment" of Mr. Bush.
And here's an interesting side note; it looks like the Bush family has been quietly buying land in Paraguay. Here is a link to more information about the Bush family and their land purchase in Paraguay.

Just beware that most of the above is "reading the tea leaves" on my part, and might not come to pass....
One can only hope...
Thank you Mr. Conyers !!!!
I think Pelosi is denying the American people the power we are supposed to have to get rid of a "president" that has repeatedly lied to us, gotten us into a senseless war that has killed hundreds of thousands of people, tortured perhaps many innocent people and is not upholding the oath he swore to protect the constitution.
Instead we now need someone to protect us from him and his cronies that are pushing us into a pure corporatocracy.
The world would thank us if we removed him and Dick from an office they should never have held.
This is a beginning
One problem the impeachment movement faces (I'm all for it) is named Dick Cheney. If Bush were impeached, then Cheney would be President, unless we can somehow get rid of him, too.
There is no political deal that could get rid of Cheney. Impeachment folks would have to find the equivalent of the crimes that sunk Agnew, and then a deal might be struck: a caretaker VP like Ford.
It is more unlikely that Cheney could also be impeached, along with Bush, without some deal, because, face it, impeachment is not really a court case, it's a political process, and Republicans will not sign on to President Pelosi.
But Conyers is a good guy and he's got the right idea: start with what you can easily prove and build the case, brick by brick.

Stop the Bushist S.S.
OK, overthrow the Bush S.S. (Signing Statement) putsch, NOW!
Conyers
Good for Conyers! He's one of the few congresspersons with the courage to stand up to the arch-criminals in the White House. This is EXACTLY what needs to be done RIGHT NOW, to keep the arrogant bastards off-balance and on the defensive. Maybe, then, they won't have the stomach for the daily outrages they seem so fond of hammering us with. It mustn't stop here, though. A daily recitation of the crimes of this evil gang must be forthcoming in order to arouse our citizenry and get our moribund MSM back to their historic role as the watchdog of government. There's no shortage of charges which can be brought-and proven-against the bushies, so that's not a problem. Everyone must find the will to say: "No more; we've had enough"!
