Brent Budowsky: Republican Congress Allows Mafia-Like Abuse of Heroic Troops and Military Families

A BUZZFLASH GUEST CONTRIBUTION
by Brent Budowsky

Independent audits have shown that up to 19% of active duty troops are paid so poorly, and face such financial hardship, that they are forced by necesssity to seek emergency loans from predatory lenders at horrendous interest rates.

Previous audits have shown that rates charged for these "payday loans" regularly rise as high a 300% to 400%. Recent reports now accuse some lenders of grotesquely ripping off heroes who serve and their families with rates as high a 791%.

This is one more example of why military families of America and those they love in service would receive far more fairness, respect and support from Democrats in Congress.

This latest outrage follows a long list of areas of neglect. The Republican Congress did not provide adequate body armor, helmets and bandage to troops under fire. They do not provide adequate support for military and veterans health care programs. There are even attempts to cut back on support for emergency brain trauma injuries for wounded troops. Military pay scales are too low, troop rotations create major problems because of inadequate levels of troop strength and those who serve in the Army, Marine Corps and Reserves have been victimized by involuntary service that borders on a backdoor draft.

A Democratic Congress would work hard and diligently to put an end to these wrong and unfair practices that harm our troops, disrupt their families, and endanger our national security.

This practice of tolerating abusive interest rate gouging of hard pressed active duty troops and miltary famlies must end right now. There has been pressure on the Republican Congress to set a cap on these interest rates, yet, so far, Republicans in Congress have been more interested in going to fundraisers, taking long recesses, using public institutions for politically partisan electioneering, and going on fancy trips to faraway places, than doing the business of standing up for troops and their families.

We should write letters to every newspaper in America pushing for news coverage, editorial support and direct criticism of a Republican Congress that permits those who heroically serve our country, and the families that love them, to be treated worse than Mafia loan sharks treat their victims.

It is sickening, disgusting, nauseating and grotesquely unpatriotic for Americans who bravely serve our country, and for American mlitary families who make enormous sacrifices with the highest patriotism, to be forced to pay interest rates for emergency loans that are 300%, 400%, even close to 800%.

We should demand the Republican Congress act immediately and not take election year recess until they do.

We should call for those who let this shameful abuse continue be defeated by voters in their reelection campaigns.

We should insist that Republicans in Congress who have let this continue return to taxpayers their pay raises for the last three years. If if they fail to support the troops and families, if they allow American heroes to be treated worse than Mafia victimes with abuses such as this, they certainly do not deserve generous pay raises from taxpayers, who support the heroism of our troops, and respect the sacrifice of their families, and not the derelictions of our politicians who let these abuses continue.

Draft Young Republicans!

Nobody in senior levels of our government cares about enlisted servicemembers and junior officers because they don't personally know any of them.

Has one member of the extended Bush clan served in the GWOT as an enlisted servicemember or junior officer? It's been five years; there are no security concerns with revealing such an assignment once it's over.

Do any high-level Administration officials personally know any enlisted servicemembers or junior officers?

Do any Bush Rangers (raised $200,000+) or Bush Pioneers ($100,000-$199,999) personally know any?

Does anyone with a White House pass personally know any?

Who is the best-connected Wounded Warrior on Walter Reed's Ward 57?

Who was the best-connected Fallen Warrior? Was it the Montana Senator's relative who was killed recently?

The Hold Up Is A Kentucky Senator

Heard about this on http://www.thomhartman.com yesterday and he mentioned that a Kentucky Senator actually receives money from a corporation that owns a payday loan store, so he's got a hold on this legislation. You can go hear about it at Thom's site and click on whiterose to hear yesterdays broadcast.
It's just like the bankruptcy bill. The Republicans put in it that before you can file for backruptcy you must go to credit counciling. Senator Ted Kennedy had a bill that would have exempt active personal in a war zone from credit counciling. The Republicans voted it down. EVERY Democratic Senator voted yes. Hello REALITY CHECK republicans. WHERE in Iraq and Afghanistan does a soldier go for credit counciling?
So thousands of soldiers families have lost their homes because they could not file bancruptcy. No credit counciling no protection from these predatory lenders.

"All that serves labor serves the nation. All that harms labor is treason to America. -- Abraham Lincoln

The troops deserve it!

Killers, torturers and rapist - that defines the American forces nowadays. I hope these criminals suffer tremendously - I don't feel a thing for them. Look to the pictures of killed Iraqi families and babies - those f*ckers are comitting crimes against humanity!!!

Wake up.

Simple..........

It's pretty obvious to anyone with atleast the diminished IQ of an "ass monkey" that (to coin a phrase) "resistance is futile." Like I alway's tell you people, "fuck em and feed em fish head's" You just don't get it...Forget asking for change..You really believe that by simply asking your Congressman/Senator for change that it's going to accomplish anything? I tell you what, wish in one hand, and shit in the other and see which one fill's up first! The time for asking has long past. It's time for every red blooded American to dig deep into his/her soul and come to grip's with what is before us all and stand the fuck up! Now I don't mean go on a rampage or postal. Just simply stand up! tell these bastards's to kiss your ass! With an e-mail, a letter your vote! Our country has been sold, to the lowest bidder. It no longer exists. It's a charade. There is no war on terror. It's a war on you and me...A war designed to scare you into just laying there like a pathetic piece of shit you are while they roll right over you. The powers that be are there for one reason and one reason only...To protect their investment's not your's, not mine....It's going to take action, not word's if we are to save this Republic. Just look at Thailand...They know when the trash need's taking out. They could smell it..Can you smell it..can you? Fight the good fight...above all else...buy more ammo.

The Reason for the Back Door

The Reason for the Back Door Draft is to keep the troops from coming home and joining the resistance. This is the reason the Anti War movement had so much clout in the 1960's. The troops came home and joined us. And a bit of enlightenment for the young folks who weren't around then: We never spit on the troops. THAT IS PROPAGANDA. They had to get their right wingnuts to hate us somehow... to divert the heat off their own backs... like they're doing right now with the Mexicans.

Financial hardship(s) suffered by service members

I'm a 21 year Navy man and Vietnam veteran. I joined the Navy in Dec. 1956 to escape poverty and get the lordly sum of $90.00 per month. I knew early on that this was not the road to riches, therefore I waited until I was almost 30 years old to get married, when I had acquired a few stripes on my sleeve and the pay and privliiges that went with the paygrade. I knew fully well that marriage was a shaky proposition as a service member-especially as a Navy man in which service extended absences from home were (and still are) the norm. What I'm trying to say here, is that I did everything only after careful deliberation using what knowlege I could glean from official sources and from talking to other sailors who had been down the same road. I really don't think the same help and support is available to the newest crop of young service members as was available in my time. I never had a lot of money in my youth, but it seems I always had ENOUGH. This was the result of following the advice of my superiors and not getting over my head, financially. I don't think the same support for our military personnel is available to them as it was in my day. I think that the same "you're on your own" philosophy as with our civilian population is in effect with our militaty. This criminal regime has to go, and the sooner, the better.

The Body Armor Issue

I agree wholeheartedly with everything Brent Budowsky says, with one exception.

He brings up the body armor issue, citing the information given in the VoteVets ad. FactCheck.org responded to that ad today, pointing out (with copious references) that the body armor issue is not the fault of either party in Congress, as none of the bills usually cited contained provisions for body armor. (Their article includes an interesting history of body armor.) The fault lies, as usual, with the rush to war by Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld and the assorted neocons, resulting in a demand for body armor with which the manufacturers were unable to keep pace. It appears that the Pentagon ordered the body armor (and did not require congressional approval), to be paid for out of its existing funds.

Remember Rumsfeld's notorious December 8, 2004 response, in Kuwait, to a serviceman's question? "As you know, you go to war with the army you have, not the army you might want or wish to have at a later time." The serviceman's question was about armor-plating on Humvees and their attempts to improvise. Given that context, we can presume that Rumsfeld's response related to equipment and not just to personnel.

Going to war with the army you have is, of course, valid if you have been attacked. As we all know, going to war as the attacker is a violation of international law and of the U.N. Charter. Going to war without plans or preparation only compounds an already criminal act.

It would be nice if we could smell impeachment in the air. It remains to be seen whether a Republican rout in November will give the Democrats the necessary spine and/or intestinal fortitude to produce such a satisfying odor.

Right wing conservatives hate the troops

The bottom line, in the world of almost all right wing conservatives, is that troops are only to be supported when they can either be used as photo-ops/political pawns or be used as cheap labor for war profiteers. That is why right wing conservatives consistently cut benefits for Veterans. It is also why they refused to supply proper body armor, cut back on medical care, stiffed soldiers for their transportation pay back home, and other abuses.

Pass it On

How did your member of the House and Senate vote on Veteran Issues. Everyone should see this and ask their Republican WHY have you voted against the Veterans most of the time if you love them sooo much. Just scroll down till you get to the list of every politician's record. Make note!!!!! Almost all the Democrats have 80% or higher, while MOST Repukes vote ZERO!!! Thats right a BIG FAT ZERO! some are lucky to have 33%. DISGRACEFUL!!!!! The Repukes should be ashamed of themselves and during this election season we need to throw their record in their faces!!!! The most shocking is McCain has a 25%. Soldiers need to know McCain is NO friend to them.
