Cindy Sheehan: Celebrating Irrelevancy!

A BUZZFLASH GUEST CONTRIBUTION
by Cindy Sheehan

Laying here in my motel room recovering from my 4th trip to the e.r. in a little over two weeks, and two surgeries, I found out from the Waco Tribune, (Sunday, August 27) that I have become "irrelevant" to the anti-war movement.

At first, I was a little defensive about that statement. I didn't really think that the article was fair, because in the last two weeks, I have been really ill and I have spent more time in the hospital and recovering from being in the hospital than I have not. Camp Casey has been limping along in my absence doing some huge things (like promoting the GI Rights Hotline at Ft. Hood and protesting Karl Rove and counter-recruitment) that haven't been covered by the media, because the media follows "cut and run" George around the country, not Camp Casey.

But then I thought about being irrelevant and the implications for that. I have worked my backside off for the last year -- traveling around the world speaking against the Iraq war and for peace and understanding. I have endured reich-wing smears and lies about me usually reserved for those seeking political office. I have been the subject of death threats and vile attacks on my character. I spent over ten months of the year away from my home and three living children. Being irrelevant can have its perks!

Why did I work myself almost to death, literally? Why did I endure all of the smears and attacks? Well, to put it in the words of the Trib, I did it to make myself irrelevant. Mission accomplished!

The article in the Trib pointed out that since public opinion is overwhelmingly against George Bush and the war and there is bi-partisan criticism in Congress against Iraq, I have become less radical and less relevant. When I sat down a year ago in a ditch close to the Bush Flying Photo Op ranch, I was radical. I was one of the only people in the country calling the president and his administration, liars. I was the only one saying the words "genocide" and "impeachment." I was one of the only ones publicly saying "illegal and immoral." Now Senators, Congress Reps, movie stars, rock stars, Army officers, almost two-thirds of America and 95% of the world, etc., are saying the same things which puts me in the middle of a very large crowd.

Thanks be to God for irrelevance. Now I can go home and get my strength back, spend time with my kids, and prepare for true and lasting peace.

Peace is the noble cause that I have been pursuing ever since Casey was killed.

Camp Casey will never be irrelevant as long as the military industrial complex runs roughshod over our government and our country. We are planning on turning Camp Casey into a haven, refuge, and sanctuary for soldiers like Lt. Ehren Watada who oppose this war and don't want to fight it. But Camp Casey will also be a refuge for soldiers who are far away from home who only want a place to come and stay for a weekend or a day.

The Camp Casey Peace Institute will also be a force for real peace. We will award young peace activists cash awards to continue their work for peace. We will encourage our families to think of other alternatives to the rampant militarism of our society. We will be safe harbor for soldiers who get trapped in the vicious cycle from GI Joe to flag draped coffin. Camp Casey will be a mecca for peace in Central Texas where the dark war lord has his vacation home.

Peace will never be irrelevant as long as war is used as a diplomatic tool.

A huge weight has been lifted off of my shoulders now. The anti-war movement is strong and thriving and it no longer needs a "face." I have been promoted to irrelevancy and am feeling pretty darn good about that accomplishment! The Iraq war will end with or without me and our troops will come home sooner than later. However, the war machine is already preparing for the next war as public opinion against this one will force a change in policy.

I am moving on up to the peace movement. I hope one day, in my lifetime, that war will become irrelevant.

Maybe not as high profile, but never irrelevant!

i commend you for what you have done. i'm sure that you have heard that a million times, and you never started this to hear that. i believe that your movement has lost momentum of sorts. you're right that you are the one bringing the view of millions of americans to the public forum. i wouldn't go so far to claim some of the firsts you do, but you definitely were the first to bring these views to the media en force. i think the Trib's comments are faulty in logic. you are not irrelevant! some lawmakers have, through your protests, have finally become concious of our thoughts on the war. at least our grounds for criticizm. unfortuntely, haveing studied the modern history of the ME, and over the last 4 years iraq in particular, i have to disagree with millions that believe that we should come home post-haste. this would be wonderful, but not correct. not because it gives terrorists the wrong impression or any of the garbage that the administration's snakes spew venomeously. but we would be doing the very people we've wronged an even greater disservice. we obviously need a new strategy from a new administration that has its act together. i pray that this is even a remote possibility. no soul with any real clout in washington even seems to exist. at least one that could conceive a real withdrawl plan that would get us out a.s.a.p, while making sure that the iraqis end up with a secure state. this problem is not easy to solve because it is due to a mistake made at the very beigning. many iraqis, if not most, wanted sepaarate states, more of a federation. given the ethinic backgrounds, past and recent iraqi history, this would have provided for the best security for a stable democarcy in iraqi. turkey renounced any attempst to allow the kurdish region to attain autonomy, as you most likely will remember. there was great deal of fear that the south (the original iraq that is predominately shi'a and is the historical center for their branch of islam) would be too redily willing to side with iran and that a theocarcy might form. then there is always baghdad, the city that has always been a point of contention between the shi'a and sunni. after being oppressed, yet again, by sunni's for a great leangth of time, the probability of religious /secerian violence was great. this was most likely an oversight of an administration that swore that they would greet us with open arms. we need people like you to now take your message further. for example, lamont's victory in Conn. was another testement to the feelings of the majority of americans. but he offers no viable solutions. that's a core problem within the anti-war movement. i was against the war before it started, and have been the entire time. sadly, we are all now responsible to see that we leave that place more stable than we found it. we need to kick our our independent contractors, stay out of their politics, let them split if they need to, let them decide how to handle the prevention of a civil war with better ideas than they have come up with so far. we need another election supported by the international community. these needs are all why i have great doubts that we'll find the people to help this country move in that direction. maybe mass movemnts like the one that you've been the energetic driving-force behind can help bring these problems to light and start a phase of your "out of iraq now" campaign where there is a real form and plan that not only reduces our casualties, but hel pthe people in the country that we destroyed, regardless of how we felt about it. we are also resposible in a majory way. it's why i'surprised that by now this guy at the top hasn't been removed! he's tarnished our names, our country. i felt this every day when i lived abroad in germany for the first 2 years of the war as a civilian. i had to explain all the time that most americans really had major issues with this war. i'm certain that iraq will fall into civil war and we'll leave as we have done in other conflicts gone wrong. we start what we can't finish. it's a disease that seems to pass from administration to administration. it infects our congress and senate. the only reason any politicians in office (aside from some very brave members of the house) are now really giving any lip service to many of the ideas of the protesters of the war is because it has bedome so unpopular that they are fearing the end of their careers. that's how sad it has become. i hope that groups like yours can come together with the parites to form strategues that hold merrit and cause us more shame you could never be considered irrelevant. i think you will go down in history as one of the most influential leaders of the peace movement, if not the most influential due to the millions of others you've inspired because you were able to realte to so many different groups of people that many can't due to the tragic death of your son, such as rally other families with the same horrific experience and organize the youth movement that really didn't have a well established plan, needing the guidence of a strong leader. you have proven that you are an amazing person with nerves of steal and a drive that is awe inspiring. you have become a legend in your own time. whether or not the history books remember you as that legend, we'll have to see, but i believe in my above comments regarding your stature. now we must shift our focus to bring bush down and making sure that not only we help fix this situation in a way the iraqi people can live with and we put the measures back in place that were supposed to prevent this mess in the first place, the powell doctorin. we'll undoubtedly need legislation to make the core stipulations of the doctorin are solidified as law that no administration can circumvent. sorry this comment is so insanely long. i figured that this will be the one chance to have you hear my views on the movement that you are such a huge part of and in many major ways help to give the strong voice it has. i wish you all the luck courage, vision, and health for the future. i hope that you get a chance to read this, but know that loads of people are leaving comments, so the chances are slim. especially because i've wtitten a whole book. Thank You for what you've done for all of us!!!!!!
