Tom Wieliczka: Neocon Politicians Never Learn From History

A BUZZFLASH READER CONTRIBUTION

How ironic that Bush is so concerned about trying to get Democracy to spread throughout the Middle East. And to think how Bush has done everything possible to pull the rug out from under our feet with our own Democracy!

In a 2003 speech, Bush said how the liberation of Iraq would create a Democracy that would spread from one Middle Eastern country to another:

There are hopeful signs of the desire for freedom in the Middle East. Arab intellectuals have called on Arab governments to address the freedom gap, so their peoples can fully share in the progress of our times. From Morocco to Bahrain and beyond, nations are taking genuine steps toward political reform. A new regime in Iraq would serve as a dramatic and inspiring example of freedom for other nations in the region. (Applause) It is presumptuous and insulting to suggest that a whole region of the world, or the one-fifth of humanity that is Muslim, is somehow untouched by the most basic aspirations of life.

But instead of a Democracy spreading like wildfire through the Middle East, we are witnessing an ever escalating rise in the chaos that is running rampant throughout the Middle East. Bush’s Middle East “democracy strategy” is falling apart at the seams. The more things Bush and his Neocon buddies touch, the worse things get.

Iraq is currently in a Civil War. Israel and Lebanon are bombing the hell out of one another. Afghanistan has seen the reemergence of the Taliban. Iran and Syria are thumbing their noses at Bush and laughing at his veiled threats while North Korea told Bush to take a flying leap when they shot off one lame missile after another into the Sea of Japan. Bush can’t do a thing about it because all of our troops are stuck in an Iraqi Quagmire. And while all of this is taking place, Osama bin Forgotten is still on the loose, planning his next attack on the United States.

You do remember Osama bin Forgotten, don’t you? The news media sure seems to have forgotten him!

Sure sounds like the “perfect” foreign policy by the Bush Administration. Unfortunately, we are witnessing a replay of the 60’s and yet another Quagmire that was once named “The Vietnam War.”

Not a single Neocon learned a thing from ‘Nam, except how to avoid the fighting themselves. That part of war, any war, they have down pat to a science! Think back to Vietnam and you will see the resemblances of Bush and Lieberman’s hardheadedness with their “stay the course at all cost” mentality vs that of Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara during the Johnson administration.

Remember McNamara’s Domino Theory?

McNamara was so sure with his plan back then, in which one Communist country would fall. Then all the other surrounding Communists countries were suppose to fall and come over to our way of Democracy.

Vietnam sure sounds like the Middle East policy today, with a new cast of characters starring Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, Gingrich, Lieberman and all the other Neocons who have repeated history with the same damn mistake.

But like I said, why the hell should the Neocons care when it’s not one of them or anybody within their families that has to do the fighting? They just do the so-called “thinking” and get us into all these Quagmires!

Now where did I put my old Vietnam Democracy Dominos?

No, they didn't learn a damn thing!

I guess that is the most galling part of the 2004 election, other than the fact that is was very likely stolen. The Rovian smear machine took off after Kerry, who chose to go to Vietnam, while Junior and the other chicken hawks went on TV and pontificated about the war in Iraq, ad nauseum, knowing zip about war and refusing to listen to anyone who did. According to them the Democrats and, of course, those "demons-from-hell Libruls" have not learned the lessons of 9/11. Actually, they would be surprised at the lessons we have learned from 9/11. The lesson they need to learn is this: You had better not look the other way and allow this to happen AGAIN, because if you do, there will not be enough torches and pitch-forks at Home Depot and Lowes combined. The chicken-hawks have not learned the lessons of Korea, Vietnam and, apparently, Iraq. They seem to have forgotten the lessons of 1776, as well, as Russ Feingold has said. Read the Declaration of ndependence lately? The U.S. will be paying economically and morally for a very long time for the NeoCons head trip.. At 57 years of age. I doubt seriously I will ever see America respected or trusted again. I resent the hell out of that, quite frankly. But, Tom, I am not sure I agree with you about Iran. I read that Geroge Bush wants to accomplish as much as he can of the PNAC roadmap to Imperial Hell, mainly because he is convinced that he cannot leave it to others who do not share his strong will (read abject concretenes), I am not a military strategist, to say the least, but I do know how much the Bushtes love shock and awe. There is nothing more shocking and awesome that a nuclear strike, or several of them. Are the Bushites that crazy? With our troops sitting ducks in Iraq? I really can't say, but the NeoCons are. That is my worst nightmare; that this nation would even contemplate using atomic weapons ever again. But, they are.
