Karen Webb on Dick and Elizabeth Cheney: Daddy’s Little Draft Deferment Slams Vietnam Vet
A BUZZFLASH GUEST CONTRIBUTION

Cheney draft deferment # 5 on Sunday momentarily stopped defending the office of the Vice President to say “Col Wilkerson gets coverage because of his associations with Gen. Powell (you hear her questioner say he was Powell’s chief of staff) and has made a cottage industry out of; you know, fantasies about the Vice Presidency.” Last week her father went after Colin Powell and said he preferred Rush Limbaugh, the guy with the large boil on his butt that prevented him from being drafted and he flunked out of everything.
Maybe #5 wants to forget who the Vice President in question is or maybe she wants us to forget that she might be just a bit partial because he is her FATHER. I am not surprised that she wants to defend her FATHER and I don’t really condemn her FATHER for not wanting to go to Vietnam. I knew a lot of people who didn’t want to go, but didn’t get 5 deferments. I know a lot of guys who were forced to go even when they didn’t support the effort.
I just have a problem with a guy who wasn’t willing to serve starting wars for other people’s children to fight. By the way, Wilkerson’s son is an Air Force navigator and his daughter has already served. Miss Draft Deferment Cheney has not served, but she did write her thesis, in 1988 on “The Evolution of Presidential War Powers.” Life father, like daughter, there is nothing like imperial Presidential Powers, but you have to have a war.
During her FATHER’s confirmation hearings to be Secretary of Defense he said “I had other priorities than military service in the 60s.” Of course, neither Wilkerson nor Powell waited to be called. There are the names of over 50,000 men without other priorities on a big wall in DC, including a cousin of mine and a friend from college, both medics.
Here we go with just a snap comparison of the 3 men’s dedication. I need to say that I am not really pleased with some of Powell’s Vietnam record, but he was there.
1955- Powell registered for the draft.
1959- Cheney registers for the draft.
1962- Powell is an advisor in Vietnam.
Cheney is not doing well at Yale, quits and goes back to Wyoming.
They are only drafting older men.
1963- The war heats up.
Powell is still an advisor and steps on a punja stake and is injured.
Wilkerson registers for the draft.
Cheney enrolls at Casper Community (Junior) college and applies for deferment #1 and on March 20, 1963 he gets it. He is 22. He transfers to the University of Wyoming at Laramie and gets deferment #2 on July 12, 1963.
1964- On Aug 17, 1964 congress approves the Gulf of Tonkin resolution giving Johnson power to use unlimited force.
Cheney gets married 58 days later on Oct. 14, 1964 and got deferment #3 because they were not drafting married men.
1965- Cheney graduates after 6 years of undergraduate school and enrolls in graduate school and applies for deferment #4.
On Oct 6, 1965 they lift the ban on drafting married men, Johnson doubles the number drafted and Mrs. Draft Evader gets pregnant.
On Nov 1, 1965 Cheney gets deferment #4.
1966- When Mrs. Draft Evader is about 10 weeks pregnant Cheney applies for a hardship exemption which is for men with children or those who must support their parents. Jan 19, 1966 he gets #5.
Wilkerson drops out of Bucknell after 3 years and volunteers for service. He says he did it because his dad had served.
July 28, 1966 Daddy’s little bundle of draft deferment is born 9 months and 2 days after they started drafting married men.
Wilkerson served as an Army OH-6A Cayuse observation helicopter pilot and logged about 1100 combat hours in over a year.
Cheney has not served one second in combat, but has an uncontrollable desire to start wars and torture people into justifying his wars and making connections he said were there, but couldn’t prove. Neither of his daughters has served any time in the military.
Cheney has also said, “I don’t regret the decisions I made. I complied fully with all the requirements of the statures, registered with the draft when I turned 18. Had I been drafted, I would have been happy to serve.”
Right, and that is why you did everything you could to keep anyone from drafting you. By the way, there is not now, nor was there then, a statute preventing people from enlisting. Why the hell wasn’t he happy to enlist? Why 5 deferments when he was so happy to serve?
Having your daughter who writes glowing papers supporting unlimited presidential powers defend you isn’t what I would call persuasive.
