Richard A. Stitt: The Insanity and Depravity of the GOP

A BUZZFLASH READER CONTRIBUTION
by Richard A. Stitt

Albert Einstein once described insanity as "doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results."

It is stunning to think with our country in a deep recession, the GOP is taking a political path to self-incineration grounded forever in tax cuts, mainly for the richest Americans. Yet, this is the path they continue to follow. However, they have become wackier and wackier now that we have seen the new leaders of the GOP, which include Joe The Plumber, Sarah Palin, Bobby Jindal, and crazier-than-a-loon Eric Cantor. These folks are their rising stars?

Clearly, eight years of Bush pronouncements of no new taxes, six of which were during a virtually veto-free Republican-controlled U.S. Congress, the Bush-GOP policies not only failed to create jobs and income but also in fact caused the loss of both income and jobs for average American workers in each year of Bush's tenure in the White House.

Yet astonishingly, after the November 4 election in which Republicans lost the presidency and seats in both houses of Congress, the Republican response to the gargantuan economic collapse that they created is to repeat over and over the bromide that tax cuts are the answer to the economic catastrophe.

After Bush left office, he bequeathed to Barack Obama a $1.2 trillion budget deficit, two wars, soaring unemployment, near-total collapse of our banking system, escalating bankruptcies and home foreclosures, and Wall Street Ponzi scheme swindlers who had free run of investors' money that they squandered on get-rich financial contrivances such as derivatives, junk bonds, hedge funds, and credit default swaps (even the name sounds dishonest).

During Bush's White House occupancy, none of these fraudulent business practices were ever explained or investigated by either the Securities Exchange Commission (SEC) or the Justice Department, both of which became arms and extensions of the Executive branch.

Michael Steele, the newly appointed Republican National Committee chairman, stated at the annual Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Washington, DC, "Tonight, we tell America that Republican values, conservative values, are right for America." He admitted that the GOP made some mistakes. "Tonight, we tell America: we know the past, we know we did wrong. My bad. But we go forward in appreciation of the values that brought us to this point."

However, the session quickly descended into a crescendo of Barack Obama bashing and sneering contempt for the Democratic Party. Steele called President Obama's stimulus bill "nothing short of frightening." He said conservatives must use the political moment to re-assert their belief in a set of basic principles: limited government, freedom, opportunity, and the ability of the free market to "create, innovate and prosper." Rep. Michelle Bachmann (R-MN) erupted in an almost Satanic-possessed shout of approval, "Michael Steele! You be da man! You be da man!"

During this GOP-CPAC howling session, John Bolton, Bush's nominee to be UN ambassador (but never confirmed), joked that "an attack on Chi-town would teach Obama a lesson."

Bachmann, who was in a tight reelection bid in a solid Republican district, stated during her 2008 campaign, "What I would say is that the news media should do a penetrating exposé and take a look. I wish they would. I wish the American media would take a great look at the views of the people in Congress and find out, are they pro-America or anti-America? I think the American people would love to see an exposé like that."

Bachmann earlier stated that minorities, specifically black minorities, were responsible for the current financial crisis. She based her opinion on a right-wing publication written by Terry Jones, Investors Business Daily. The article criticizes the Community Reinvestment Act (CRA) for pushing "Fannie and Freddie to aggressively lend to minority communities." Jones goes on to say that Clinton was misguided to push "home ownership as a way to open the door for blacks and other minorities to enter the middle class."

Yeah, Michael Steele, "You be da man," -- unless you start embracing programs such as expanding state children's health insurance program (SCHIP) to families with children. The program was designed to cover uninsured children in families with incomes that are modest but too high to qualify for Medicaid for millions of poor children. G.W. Bush vetoed that bill and it took a new Democratic Party controlled Congress to finally get the bill passed.

What is it about these Latter Day Republicans who seem obsessed with guns, violence, and conflict? We recall that Bolton also joked that if you blew off 10 floors of UN building in New York, it wouldn't make a difference. Another GOP wacko, Alan Keyes, stated that Barack Obama is a "radical Communist" who "must be stopped." Sean Hannity, inveterate Republican Fox News Channel advocate for violence, has a Web site instigating the violent overthrow of our government and supports armed rebellion to oust Barack Obama.

There's the right-wing Rupert Murdoch-owned newspaper, the New York Post, depicting two policemen standing over a chimpanzee's body shot dead, with a caption that Democrats would have to find someone else to write the stimulus bill. Clearly, this was a call to incite any number of Screech Radio's army ant colonies of "lone wolves" to assassinate President Barack Obama. It cannot be interpreted in any other way. There is no ambiguity in the Post's inflammatory political cartoon.

We're only a little over one month into Barack Obama's administration, yet the level of incendiary rhetoric and heightened call for violence by the Republicans is only in its incipient stages. It's not enough for the GOP to just say "no" to the stimulus bill. Their real and dangerously treasonous agenda is to advocate armed rebellion, disorder, and sabotage of our government.

Apparently, the GOP's thirst for blood was not quenched sufficiently during Bush's preemptive genocidal war against a broken country, Iraq. There, he and his GOP abettors are responsible for murdering tens of thousands of Iraqi citizens, putting 4,252 U.S. military personnel in body bags and the wounding of over 30,000 more, many disabled for life. Now, the GOP is threatening to take their frenzy of physical force to a domestic level.

One thing is for sure: the NRA couldn't be happier.

Don't forget LaPierre!

"National Rifle Association Executive VP Wayne LaPierre declaring that 'I don't care if it makes their butts pucker from here to the Potomac, the Founding Fathers understood that the guys with the guns make the rules.'" So if any of those lamebrains ever suggest that some poor (well, actually rich) white guy is deprived of his civil liberties, just remind them that we have the guns now!

Screw the NRA, arm yourself..

maybe if we send some of these fucks back to Jesus, then they'll get the message... (Of course, that's a joke. You need to look at the historical context of Bolton's joke about Chicago and the UN..) But really, the right is gonna be shocked at how many of us are already armed (That's a joke, too, after all, we are liberals, which means we don't fight back and we can't fixe cars.) Unless of course we do.

they are going to use violence and intimidation to get their way

The hard right does feel the need to explain their policies in away that is coherent. They don't care whether the American people want what they are selling. given the recent threats of outright violence on Hannity's web site, the threat to shoot members of Congress by Joe the Asswipe Plumber, the Post cartoon that seemed to be an invitation to assassinate Obama--show what a dangerous group of people these are. And mainstream liberals seem to still want to use the old, tired and failed tactic of "I'll be nice to you, so you'll be nice to me." We need to DEMAND that individuals or groups who threaten violence or the lives of officials or private citizens be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law (That's right..threatening to kill or hurt people for simply disagreeing with their worldview is NOT PROTECTED SPEECH.) And if law enforcement cannot or will not protect us from these whacko religious nutjobs, then we had better go after them ourselves..End of story.

Hypocrisy

LeeAnnG (not anonymous!)

Makes Rev. Wright's "Goddamn America" seem pretty tame by comparison. But for anyone who thinks the liberals control the media, there are no videos of Hannity or any of the other "overthrow the government" rightwing nutjobs being pilloried over and over and over and over ad nauseum on the corporate nedia.

I have an acquaintance who recently stated that he also hopes Obama fails because Obama is a Communist. This guy raised his kids on food stamps and accepts SSI. He talks also about how he hates the government, but then turns right around and says he believes in "America first." He says he accepts the government handouts because he thinks it's a great joke to take "their" money (as if it isn't my tax dollars and those of other working Americans). Although he has a teaching degree, he decided he hated teaching and did a "back to the land" move in 1972 - the last time he had a job.

This is a rather extreme case of hypocrisy, but it exemplifies the convoluted thinking (using the word in its loosest sense) of the batshit crazy wingnut regressives. It's OK to hate the government if you are a "conservative," but not if you are a liberal because rightwingers hate it for the right reasons. Sheesh.

Scary as hell...

The newly-defeated Republicans = the new Third Reich. Democrats, Liberals and Progressives = the new Jewish "problem". History is doomed to repeat itself, if these people are not stopped. I am certainly not advocating assassination, as those on the Reich Wing are with respect to Obama. I am just saying that these people need to be stopped.

Good article on the weird GOP freako's

You very nicely summed up the bizarre behavior of the freako's in the new GOP leadership. Rush Windbag is the king of fools, and together these misfits continue to twist the good deeds of others in the Democratic party who are trying to clean up George Bush's horrible mess. The weak minded souls who somehow think it cool to be Republican will continue to blindly follow their stupid ideas over the cliff.

This is not rocket-science, it's the old Slave-plantation agenda

This is not rocket science. It is the old slave-plantation agenda.
"How do we keep the boys DOWN-on-the-farm after they've been to gay Paree"?
- answer: BY CALLING OUT Gen. McArthur's calvary troopers, to TRAMPLE World WarI veterans INTO THE MUD in their "Hooverville" shanty-town in Washington DC. during the Great Depression!

Which, era, don't forget, was nearly as ferocious vs poor white workers as vs Blacks. Google "Ludlow Massacre" and "Battle of Blair Mountain" for details of Rockefellers & other mine owners hiring "security services" to SHOOT UP _white_ miners marching for Union pay and less hazardous working conditions. (some mines had fatalities... daily!)

The amazing thing is, that Americans were SO DELUDED as to buy into the "TRICKLE DOWN" theory in the first place! AS IF being peed-on by the wealthy is your ticket to raising a secure, healthy, and upwardly mobile family, yeah, that's it!

Both author Michael Lind, and Gary Brecher "The War Nerd" explain that people are NOT rational or logical - they are TRIBAL and CLANNISH first, and rational, egalitarian, and charitable a distant second. The only way President Truman passed THE MARSHALL PLAN was by pointing out HOW PROFITABLE it would be to American farmers & other suppliers. Had it not been for Truman & Marshall's indefatiguable efforts, Americans would have been willing to let Europeans STARVE after WWII - - - and they were our allies!

The corporate Media and Right-Wing Hate Radio have become EXPERT at CONFLATING tribal jealousies and clannish animosities (towards immigrants, blacks, "welfare cheats", etc.) EVEN AS the Corporate Right-Wing LOVES cheap, immigrant labor, and corporate media CHEERS SOCIALIZED BAILOUTS for Big, fraudulent, usury-extortion Banksters!

This is not rocket science -----

An excellent and true synopsis.

The degenerate republican party

The only good news is that unless these wacko's can convince the "Joe Six Pack" demographic (the ones who fight the wars for them and support their economic policies even though they are not to their benefit) to take up arms against the government nothing will happen. Bush, Cheney, Limbaugh, Hannity, Cantor, McConnell et al are proven cowards.

unless these wacko's can convince the "Joe Six Pack" demographic

I sure hope I'm wrong, but I disagree with your optimism. It seems as if the propagandists have ALREADY managed to convince many joe six packs to take up arms. Chaos, anarchy, and violence are now the necessary goals of the propagandists in their desperate efforts to keep fascism going. (And I can hardly believe I'm writing these words!)

No longer just Antisocialists they are now openly Feral

No longer are the Gang Of Pirates just riffing off their Na-Na Nanny State "we are all grown ups who don't need monitors" deregulation mantra. That experiment has been done and all that needs to be tried, are those who also need convictions. So what is left to do but declare that the very existence of evidence of their insanity is the problem. Get rid of the evidence and the insanity ceases to exist. Howling mad indeed.

If the Gang Of Pirates think that the only good Democrat is a dead Democrat, only a fool would think it bipartisan to accommodate them.

More re Stitt's words

You covered it all, Mr. Stitt. The Republican party's shameful display of hatred, ignorance and selfishness is shocking. Rush Limbaugh's mindless raving is referred to on CNN as "a rousing speech" and infers that Limbaugh represents the new face of the Republican party. If that is the face of that party, I would hate to see its ass. In my 77 years, I have never seen anything as treasonous, threatening, and dangerous as the CPAC participates and their reaction to Obama and liberals. During the Bush reign of insanity, the Repugs were disdainful and dismissive of any expressions of concern for the huge deficits being accumulated. They gave Bush whatever he wanted without serious question of anything. The constitution was literally shredded by Bush/Cheney. Just what are the "values" which the Repugs hold so dear? My late father-in-law told me when I was a young "conservative" for awhile that I would one day learn that Republicans want to help the rich get richer and care nothing for the rest of us. How right he was! I was in Dallas two weeks before JFK was assassinated. I had been attending IBM training there. The newspapers had full-page hatred ads denouncing JFK. The ads were paid for by the wealthiest oilmen in Dallas. Upon my return home, I told my family and fellow workers that I feared what might happen if JFK went to Dallas, that he might be murdered. In my opinion, President Barack Obama is one of the very best people to be leading our country. Rush Limbaugh should be locked away.

You reap what you sow

Perhaps when the top brass at Fox News HQ is crawling on the floor of their plush offices, covering their mouths with hankies and gasping for breath as the smoke from the arson fire thickens, hearing the desperate cell phone call from Sean Hannity that armed men are blocking the exits, are not letting anyone inside escape the blaze and are keeping NYC firefighters at bay, they might come to the realization that they shouldn't have tacitly encouraged someone to assassinate Obama.

The root of the problem

It's important to keep some perspective. These wackos would be amusing if they weren't backed by the wealthy families that own the mass media (and pretty much everything else).

They're carrying out the agenda of the wealthy, who support them through the corporations they own. They parrot talking points designed to convince poor whites to support the GOP, against their own economic interests. These talking points are composed from extensive research by think tanks, also funded by the wealthy.

These wackos are indestructible; when one is discredited, they're simply replaced from a never-ending supply.

The problem is that most Americans are shockingly ignorant of the class war being waged against them by the wealthy class, and don't see the larger goal of the right wing to accomplish this. Thus they're swayed by individual arguments of the GOP that misrepresent facts and sound reasonable in isolation.

Right on, Mr. Stitt...

...yours is a sane voice. I'm 54 years old and these are the scariest times I've ever lived through. It only takes a few "loner" nuts to do incredible damage and the CPAC/GOP rhetoric is specifically designed to incite those fringe players. Liberal tolerance needs to be tempered with vigilance and the DOJ needs to take appropriate action against those advocating violent overthrow under the umbrella of free speech. Kathy Mc., El Paso, Texas

whores

The republican leadership cannot change because they are bought and paid for. If they responded logically to the current populist uprising, they would loose most of their funding, and come under attack from their current media allies (just like the democrats are always attacked). When they advocate only for big money, there can be no change without complete reformation, including a new funding source. I believe they will have to change their name to fool enough people to ever get elected again in a national election.

Honorable profession

I strongly believe that a whore - any whore - is more ethical, truthful, loyal and honorable than your average rebiblican. Therefore don't compare rebiblicans to whores. You're insulting the oldest profession of the world.

;o) - Malgoska.

Stitt Comments

Madness does abound in the Republican Party. Appreciate Mr. Stitt's comments and agree wholeheartedly. Luckily, this is a party of elders mostly - and these radicals seem to be losing their numbers. Most Americans are fed up - the last election bears this out. As long as the Republicans continue in this vein they will lose. Nate Roth San Mateo, CA

It may be time to flip it back on them....

If Obama is assasinated, everyone of these radical nutcases, including most House and Senate republicans, Limbaugh, Keyes, DeLay, Palin, etal should be eliminated by a politcal assasination hit squad funded by donations from regular folk on the left. I would be the first to donate. They are ruining our country, and it would be the patriotic thing to do.

In my many years following

In my many years following politics, the current propaganda-induced insanity is the scariest thing I've witnessed. While there have always been extremists and extremist groups, they didn't control the media and they didn't hold many powerful positions in every branch of government. What's been stunning to me is the full-court press approach that has been able to so swiftly turn some (much?) public attention from this obvious republican-caused depression to the obama depression. This is organized propaganda of the highest order--Goebbels would be envious--and can only be done by appealing to hate and fear. As stated, this is only the beginning. With an enabling media--and a feckless democratic party--rational national dialogue cannot take place.
