Jacqueline Marcus: Sen. Specter's Forced Delay of Eric Holder Offensive to Millions of Americans

A BUZZFLASH GUEST CONTRIBUTION
by Jacqueline Marcus

In today's The New York Times, it was reported that "Senate Republicans on Wednesday forced a one-week delay in a vote on the nomination of Eric H. Holder Jr. as attorney general, denying President Obama the chance to have a key member of his national security team in place as planned." (The New York Times 1/21/09)

Although Holder's confirmation is assured, the forced delay, led by Sen. Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania, the ranking Republican on the Judiciary Committee, is seen as offensive to millions of Americans.

Sen. Specter and his colleagues are using Clinton's pardon of Mark Rich as an excuse to delay Holder's nomination. Specter has raised the same questions regarding the pardon of Mark Rich beyond beating a dead horse. Mr. Holder has given perfectly reasonable and reflective explanations; nothing more can be asked or said about it.

If Senator Specter and his Republican colleagues believe that they're acting on behalf of Americans who've been waiting for a true constitutional lawyer such as Eric Holder to step in and restore the Bill of Rights and the principle that "no one is above the law," they are gravely mistaken.

Indeed, Sen. Specter should take a moment or two and replay the Inaugural Address: Look at the more than two million people who stood in the freezing cold weather for two days straight to wish their new President well.

Sen. Specter's attempt to block Mr. Holder on dubious grounds is not only offensive to President Obama, but also it is incredibly offensive to all the millions and millions of people who are supporting President Obama after eight years of oppression, depression, witnessing unspeakable violations of our laws, such as the practice of torture, impeachable offenses, all since the invasion of Iraq. Where oh where was Sen. Specter when the Justice Department gave the stamp of approval to torture detainees?

It raises suspicious questions: Why is Sen. Specter so intent on delaying Holder's nomination? Could it be that Bush's Justice Department has a lot to hide and they need more time to shred, shred, and shred again the evidence of foul deeds?

For example, consider the case of Bradley J. Schlozman, a former Justice Department official entrusted with enforcing civil rights laws, who refused to hire lawyers whom he labeled as "commies" and transferred another attorney for allegedly writing in "ebonics" and benefiting from "an affirmative action thing," according to an investigation released yesterday by internal watchdogs. (The Washington Post 1/14/09)

Republicans have had it their way for eight long years and this country suffered the consequences from their UNjust policies that have favored big polluting industries at the expense of the public's health and well being.

In the last two days, reports have been issued about the life-threatening outbreaks of salmonella in some peanut butter products. What the media is NOT telling the public is that Bush lifted over 400 health and safety regulations, favoring the corporations over the public's health. There have been countless cases of salmonella in this country since Bush lifted essential regulations that were put in place to protect the public.

If Sen. Specter's decision to delay Eric Holder's nomination disturbs you, then call his office (202/224-4254) and tell him to stand aside and let President Obama do his work for the people. It's offensive to hold back Holder during a time of urgent crisis when we must make the necessary changes in our Justice Department, starting with restoring our constitutional rights!

Holding Holder...

Did Specter learn nothing from Hillary's bad move on Iraq. Delaying Holder's nomination should cost Specter his seat just as supporting the Iraq invasion cost Hillary the presidency. The degree to which our representatives are out of touch with the real world is very worrisome....Come on Pennsylvania....dump Spector.

Railroading by Specter

After some observations over the years, i sometimes wonder if Specter is "not of" the human specie since he helped "railroad" the election of old Clarence Thomas to the unSCOTUS many years back and now we suffer because of his decisions.Thumbs down to Specter and Cornyn. But with Obama maybe the winds of change, altho hard to accomplish for President Obama, will blow our way once again. I faxed President Obama last nite and congratulated him on his election and inauguration.Maybe we need to fax Sen.Specter,too.

Marc Rich pardon because of Israel

At core of Marc Rich's pardon were Israel and the Jewish influence groups. But no one in Congress has the guts to ask the hard questions to Elder as to what was behind the Marc Rich pardon.

I suggest you Google: Joe Conason Marc Rich Pardon

It's Up To Us

I find it incredible that We, the People aren't seeking to impeach most of the elected Republicans for violating their oaths of office. I'm sure that if a real prosecutor like Vincent Bugliosi were to undertake such a cause, he wouldn't have much trouble achieving convictions.

But waiting for someone else to act isn't going to achieve anything. We are going to have to push the Democrats to do what they should be doing already even if we are still in the first week of the Obama years. They aren't going to unless we let them know loudly and consistently that this is the will of the people.

On a longer term basis, however, we need to be pushing for additional choices in our elections. The kind of corruption embodied by the two major colluding national conspiracies parties is exactly why the nation is in the current predicament. Obama is talking change. We need to act on it.

We've got Obama's back

I think it is terribly important for ALL of us to flood Spector's office, and Cornyn's, with our messages about their obstructionism. We are Obama's political capital and we need to act swiftly, without hesitation, to let them, and Obama and the Democrats, know that WE are now the "oversight". Obama cannot fail if we stick real close to him and let the whole Congress and the whole world know WE ARE HERE.

It's actually Senator Cornyn who's blocking the nomination.

It's actually Sen. Cornyn blocking Holder's nomination; see the Talking Points Memo article referenced in the Yglesias blog, Cornyn Holds Up Holder, Demands Immunity From Prosecution For Torturers, that was used as a source for the BuzzFlash article Watch Out for John Cornyn: He's the New GOP Elephant in the China Shop.

Boy, Cornyn's just having a ball, isn't he?

He put a hold on Clinton (although he voted for her confirmation) just to exert some sort of "control" over Obama. Now this. I live in Texas (note, I did not say I am FROM Texas) so Cornyn is one of my Senators. And a dumber man I don't think I can envision, except for our gone and unlamented ex-Pres (also from Texas -- hmmmm -- is that a trend?). I honestly can't think of one thing Cornyn has done that I agree with. And Specter, who was always going to do "something" to stop Bush, but just never could be bothered to actually do it. What a group.
