Would an October surprise even work? -- Last Chance Democracy Cafe

http://www.lastchancedemocracycafe.com/?p=1409

Democrats have been worrying a lot lately about a possible October surprise. You know, some dramatic game changing event deliberately dropped into the closing months of the campaign in the hope of saving John McCain’s bacon: something along the lines of war with Iran, catching Osama bin Laden or McCain proving the Beltway pundits right by actually walking on water.

So does worrying so much about this (other than the walking on water part) mean we’re paranoid?

Let’s check the definition:

Paranoid: Exhibiting or characterized by extreme and irrational fear or distrust of others.

Nope, no paranoia here: There’s obviously nothing irrational about fearing that George W. Bush will do anything — and I mean anything — to keep his team in the White House. He’s proven as much on multiple occasions, most shamefully through the deliberate manipulation of terrorism alerts for political gain. Besides, Bush & Co. have plenty of incentive to continue their pattern of gaming the machinery of American democracy. If nothing else, how happy can they be over the prospect of having Barack Obama’s Department of Justice investigating their various crimes?

No, it seems pretty clear that the irrational thing would be to not worry about an October surprise.

But would one even work?

It might, I suppose, but personally I doubt it. Bush, the most politically obsessed president in memory, in terms of subverting federal policy for political ends, overplayed his hand long ago. No one believes him anymore. In fact, even if he were to act in absolute apolitical sincerity in, say, launching a few missiles at Mahmoud Ahmadinejad a month or two before the election, people would still assume the worst.

He’s earned our abiding distrust the good old-fashioned way — by lying almost every time he opens his mouth.

Sporting his impressive 24% approval rating, no one is ever going to give Bush the benefit of the doubt again.

I don’t doubt that he may well try to help McCain through an October surprise, but my money’s on it backfiring in a big way.

THE LAST CHANCE DEMOCRACY CAFE

This year's October Surprise will be brought to you by

the letters A.I.P.A.C., sponsored by the Armageddon wing of the U.S.A.F.------------------------------------------------------------- http://tinyurl.com/4gqhuf ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.rense.com/general78/nuks.htm

Of course they're going to try..

They worked SO hard to get this far. Are you kidding me? They aren't going to just give it all over to the Democrats THAT easily. The Republicans have profited hugely and want to continue to reap the benefits they have bestowed upon themselves. They will do ANYTHING. We know that. To think there won't be something up their sleeves right before the election would be naive. I fear there will be another terror attack in the U.S., caused by Bush & Cheney, again, and will be blamed on Iran, just to get McCain elected. These people are thugs as they have proven and I know there will be some kind of nasty surprise. I hope you are right in that it won't work.

The October surprise that would work

If McSame announced That he was dropping out (lets say for medical reasons) After he has slung all the mud he can. His replacement could take over from where McSame left off. All the money that Barak used against McSame would have been wasted. Without time to change gears for the true Republican choice. The one that mud will stick to if anyone had more time to dig it up. Maybe this is why Bush & McCain together can't raise the same money that Bush, alone raised in 2000. They will wait until October to buy the Presidency. Just a thought, from one of those, who does fear an October surprise.

NEVER AGAIN!!!

I am SURE that the American people will NEVER let what happened to us for 8 years happen again! There is just to much truthiness out there now to prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that W is a lying piece of s*#t! There will be NO MORE selection of a president! This time around we shall ELECT the man that can bring change and I don't mean MCBUSH!! Let's make SURE of it!! Peace to you and yours....

Family Republicans

I come from a family of Southern Baptist Republicans. They are all convinced that Dumbya will be sitting on a throne at the left hand of God in the next life and that he can walk on water in this one. When presented with obvious lies, distortions, crimes and decidedly un-Christian behavior, they blame the "liberal media". They believe that if the bad stuff was true that it would be all over Fox News - the only "fair and balanced" news. How do you argue with that?

The evangelical 24% vote. An October surprise by Bush would only motivate them more. They are a truly frightening bunch.

Oh, Lord

I know where you're coming from. You can't argue with that; it's like repeatedly banging your head against a brick wall. Many of these people are getting their politics from church (I know it's not supposed to be that way, but there you have it). If you are able to donate, do so. If you are able to reach out to young voters, elderly who may not have the means to get to their precinct, others who say their vote doesn't matter, then maybe we can counter all the hate mongering, right-wing jerks.

I Sure Hope You're Right - But My Family's Mainly Republicans

who despite the OBVIOUS evidence of Bush's lying us into Iraq and bungling the job in 2004, voted for him anyway - and doubled-down by calling ME a "traitor"!!! I'm sure Bush could sodomize my four-year old cousin live on C-SPAN, and they'd hail it as a "decisive victory against them damned libburuls - er, 'terrorism'!"

The NeoKon Khrister Right's hatred for anything REMOTELY progressive and capacity for criminal self-delusion is truly stunning, even eight years later. Look at how they keep ranting that Obama filling sandbags is "just a photo op" that "'actually' did more harm than good!" The Right, including my Mom and her John Wayne-loving husband, lives in their own version of Republican Bizarro World.

Never Underestimate the Stupidity of the American Electorate!

After all, Bush is a Two Term President! What sane nation could have had that happen to it?

There are all too many knee jerk issues.

And there are all too many willfully ignorant asses out there. Some are desperately looking for an excuse to vote for evil again.

Okay, John - Do I Owe You a Coke, or Do You Owe Me a Coke?

:)
