Elliot D. Cohen: The Bush/McCain Game Plan: What May Be in Store for Obama -- And the Rest of America. The Iran Attack.

A BUZZFLASH GUEST CONTRIBUTION
by Elliot D. Cohen

Now that Barack Obama has secured the Democratic nomination, many of his supporters are looking forward with guarded optimism to a victory in November. However, while they assume that the road ahead will be a challenging one, and that the outcome may rest with key battleground states such as Ohio, what they may fail to anticipate are the kinds of obstacles that the McCain campaign in tandem with the Bush Administration might, in the coming months, place between them and victory.

It is easy enough to take one's eyes off the ball when concentrating on campaign speeches and strategies for winning over the hearts and minds of Americans. So what things might change the landscape of the current contest and tilt it in favor of the McCain camp?

First, the guarded optimism of Obama supporters assumes that the voting process will be largely a fair one. However, attention to past irregularities suggests otherwise. There are several familiar ways in which the election could be stolen. Some of these ways would be to disenfranchise African American voters and other would-be Obama supporters by purging them from voting lists, losing or failing to send out their registrations, deceiving these citizens about their proper voting precincts, and misallocating voting machines in precincts likely to go for Obama.

These, among other illegal and unethical tactics, were employed in key battleground states such as Florida and Ohio in both the 2000 and 2004 elections. It is pie-in-the-sky optimism to think that these same tactics won't be used, perhaps even more systematically, again in 2008. Meanwhile, faulty, insecure, and hackable electronic voting machines attached to malfunctioning printers will be used to record ballots.

In addition to these more conventional manners of election fraud, there are also other possible ways to steal the election. All electronic voting machines transport their data over telephone lines to a central computer where tabulations of votes are made. These telephone lines are not secure, however, because, in putting into operation its unlawful warrantless surveillance program, the Bush Administration had installed computer technology at major telecom company hubs, such as those of AT&T, which intercepts and reads messages before they reach their final destination. It is therefore quite conceivable that the balloting data being transported from individual voting precincts could be intercepted and reconfigured before it reaches its main tabulation point.

Unless adequate legal protections are enacted to protect against such possibilities, we may never know whether votes were changed even before they were tabulated. Unfortunately, the Senate version of proposed legislation (S.2248) that is supposed to protect against abuses of privacy, gives telecom companies immunity against criminal and civil liability for participating in unlawful electronic searches and seizures, and does not offer adequate safeguards against the possibility of such illegal tampering with votes.

As if this wasn't unsettling enough, while the Senate and House debate the final disposition of S.2248, the possibility remains of government interception of all e-mails and phone calls sent through the phone lines, including the messages sent by the presidential candidates and their representatives. Thus, while the Nixon Administration had to break into Democratic National Headquarters in order to get the lowdown on its Democratic opponents, the McCain camp, with the assistance of the Bush Administration, may now have only to go online to read about Obama's latest strategy for winning the election; thereby giving it the potential to thwart this strategy before it succeeds. Again, it is pie-in-the-sky optimism to suppose that such tactics as this will not be used by what can arguably be regarded as the most corrupt administration in the history of America.

As recently learned, there is currently a secret deal being transacted between the Bush Administration and the Iraq government that would establish permanent military bases in Iraq, thereby nominalizing Obama's promise to withdraw troops from Iraq and giving greater credence to the stalwart position of McCain to keep American troops in Iraq.

The strategy of the McCain camp will undoubtedly include stressing McCain's military and foreign affairs experience and emphasizing Obama's lack thereof. With the establishing of permanent military bases in Iraq, this emphasis will be further vindicated.

Notwithstanding a National Intelligence Estimate according to which Iran discontinued its nuclear weapons program in 2003, Bush has stepped up his rhetoric against Iran. He recently proclaimed, "Iraq is the convergence point for two of the greatest threats to America in this new century: al-Qaida and Iran," and he threatened, "If Iran makes the right choice, America will encourage a peaceful relationship between Iran and Iraq. If Iran makes the wrong choice, America will act to protect our interests and our troops and our Iraqi partners."

The Obama camp, not to mention every U.S. citizen, should be prepared for the possibility that prior to the November election, Bush will attempt to use his "war powers" to sidestep Congressional authority and launch an attack on Iran. From a purely logistical perspective, with simultaneous wars going on in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Iran, including a permanent presence in Iraq, it would make sense to have a commander in chief who is experienced in warfare. Obviously, this would place McCain in the enviable position of being able to boast of his wartime experiences and would leave Obama grasping for a response.

For the Obama camp, trying to win a victory against McCain and his Bush Administration support system may be like trying to play cards against an opponent who is using a loaded deck. But all American citizens on either side of the political divide should be concerned about the prospects of the 2008 presidential race becoming a power grab where the lives and liberties of all of us are used and abused to amass power and dominance, both here and abroad.

Those who support Obama need to beware. But those who support McCain need equally to beware, for winning a contest that is fixed is not really winning; and when the contest in question involves the defiling of the U.S. Constitution and the destruction of democracy, there are values at stake that far transcend one's party affiliation.

By the way...

When will the MSM, or even Buzzflash for that matter, begin to talk about McCain's REAL military history? How he killed 137 sailors on the USS Forrestal because he was being a hotdog and wet started his plane: http://www.rumormillnews.com/cgi-bin/forum.cgi?noframes;read=119707

The MSM doesn't push McCain's "stellar" graduate record...

—Source, Wikipedia "Early life and military career of John S. McCain, III. "McCain graduated from the Naval Academy in June 1958;[44] he was fifth from the bottom in class rank, 894th out of 899.[29] Despite his difficulties, McCain later wrote that he never defamed the more compelling traditions of the Academy – courage, resilience, honor, and sacrifice for one's country[45] – and he never wavered in his desire to show his father and family that he was of the same mettle as his naval forebears.[45] Indeed, Slew and Jack McCain had not had sterling records at the Academy themselves, finishing in the bottom third and bottom twentieth respectively." bobz

If Dumbya does.....

If Bush attacks Iran, all bets would be off for his hope of retiring in peace in scrub land Texas. He would be sent to prison to await execution for war crimes, treason, torture, violations of international law, and violations of the U. S. Constitution.

But the real Point of the Article...

...was that as bad as McCain is, (as a candidate, AND as a potential PTSD victim with his finger on the Nuclear Button) - we are in danger of losing the election anyway - by the same old nefarious means that they used in 2000 and 2004. That's the point that we must be PROACTIVE about - we have almost five months. Obama's no fool - I suspect his people are 'on it' - but other than that, who are the really capable groups for ensuring a fair election? Is Blackboxvoting any good? There's BradBlog. Palast and M.C.Miller are great advocates; but Who's got the power to keep it (relatively) straight? Maybe with Wall Street leaning towards Obama more and more, we can hope the Establishment will "do the right thing." I can't believe I'm sounding that naive!!!!
As far as an October attack on Iran - maybe that's what Impeachment will prevent - but it might have the opposite effect...

McCain does NOT get to define the word 'patriotism' for me. I am a former Marine who served shortly after Vietnam was ended. No, I did not see combat. But you can be sure that I served with those who did. The stories they told me of what they did to people on the battlefield can not be repeated. It was as if I were listening to a script to a horror movie when they told their tales. War is hell, as the saying goes. Just ask McCain. But I'll be damned if he gets to define what it means to be a patriot. He is no longer qualified to discuss military matters. I'm sorry McCain. Your time is over. You lived a 20th century nightmare 40 years ago. Well, that's over. Done. Finished. LIVE IN THE 21ST CENTURY WITH THE REST OF US NOW!!! How dare you define patriotism as an all encompassing need, want and desire to pursue, dream and finance endless war. How dare you tell this nation that YOUR military experience defines for 300 million others what being a patriot is. How dare you even attempt it. YOU don't get to define patriotism for me. Patriotism means a SOUND energy policy that has nothing to do with the ME anymore. No more dependence on ME oil. Patriotism is thinking long and hard about these issues that affect the REST of us. Not your friends in DC. Not your friends in the oil companies. Not your friends on Wall Street who GOT US INTO OUR CURRENT ECONOMIC MESS. That's patriotism? Really? If you think that's patriotism I've got news for you, buddy. You're sick. Really ill. In fact, my best guess is that you need meds, which you're not taking. Patriotism is knowing when to quit fighting or when to not start a fight. Patriotism is entering the rest of the world community. Patriotism is connecting with the electorate in a 21st century way, not your tired, old, battered 20th century, unplugged way. Your definition of patriotism is NOT my definition of patriotism. That's because I live in the 21st century, not the 20th. Speaking - LOUDLY - CLEARLY - as a former US Marine - who volunteered for service - YOU, Mr. McCain are NOT A PATRIOT ANYMORE.

We Must Stand Up

If our democracy is again subverted we need to take Jefferson's words to heart. But only through the methods of King and Ghandi. John

Pelosi pretends NOT TO NOTICE massive Repub vote stealing....

Yes, Pelosi & Reid (& co.) are pretty damn pathetic about working to assure the the reliability of having every voter's vote fully counted in America.
"Pathetic" being a nice word for gross incompetence, dereliction of duty, and failing to uphold that bedrock of the US Constitution, free and fair elections!

Mark Crispin Miller, Brad-blog, Greg Palast, and others estimate that up to (or over) _5 million_ American votes were stolen and trashed in election 2004 - not to mention that patently absurd Ohio middle-of-night incident where the Republican crew in one county slammed the door to observers during their vote count, claiming that the FBI had called in a terror security alert!

I believe Palast said Democrats will have to overcome an estimated 8 million - EIGHT MILLION - vote fix in 2008 to win the White House. In Florida, one computer programer even signed an affadavit under oath claiming that Florida Republican former (state) House Majority Leader Tom Feeney had even hired him to write and install vote fixing software. (Software that could change a (for eample) Kerry vote to a Gore vote without leaving a trace, a sub-program that would dissolve itself after the final vote tally had been produced.)

Given the oceans of Republican vote rigging scandals, Pelosi and Reid's pretending not to notice is little short of DISGRACEFUL.

I wish to heaven...

...that the truth about our unsecured election systems would be trumpeted throughout the media. Very shortly after the 2004 elections, it was clear that millions of votes had been hacked, millions more "spoiled" and millions more prevented from voting in the first place, virtually all probable voters for Democratic candidates. And you better bet that it included more than just the presidential election. We have Republicans who lost in seats of power in the Congress and in state offices. Mark Crispin Miller estimates that the 2006 elections saw at least 21 Republicans seated in the House who had actually lost. This isn't some wild speculation. He has statistical evidence. Pat Williams

We All Know This......

The question is, how do we prevent it. Our Congress-critters don't seem to have a real plan to safe guard this election. If people really wanted to protect the elections we would go to pen and paper ballots. Who cares how long it takes to count the vote! At least we could have some trust in the outcome. Until real safeguards are in place, I can come up with one plan. As bloggers, citizen journalists, e-mailers and so forth, we can let it be known to the powers-that-be that if we even suspect election tampering this year, all hell is gonna break loose, from Maine to Southern California. The pitchforks and torches will be coming out, along with a few more instruments of chaos and the real American Revolution will begin. The people will take this country back, from the corporations and their puppets in D.C. and it won't be pretty. Thomas Jefferson once said that we needed to have a revolution about every 25 years. Seems we are long over-due.

Of what relevance is McCain's military experience?

A couple of points need to be made about McCain. First, he finished 5th from the bottom of his class. That does not give great indications of intelligence in tactics and strategy. Second, McCain was a pilot, not an officer in charge of war planning. The two are quite different skills, and according some reports, he was not a very skillful pilot in any case, having had three serious accidents while in training. He was shot down and traumatized by serious injuries and solitary confinement as a POW. By his own admission in a 1973 interview, he stated that solitary confinement causes permanent psychological damage. None of this favors his ability as a former military man to exercise proper judgment, which is the quality most needed in a president, and obviously lacking in our current "War President", based on 7 years of failed wars, failed economy, broken military, broken veterans, and broken Constitution.

MCCAIN IS A #$%@ PHONY!

Underneath that thin veneer of civility, all MCain has is UTTER STUPIDITY. He has NO KNOWLEDGE of the issues he will be compelled to resolve as President. He's Narrow-Minded, ARROGANT, UNDER-EDUCATED & BARELY CIVIL. But he might become president! OBAMA & THE DEMOCRATS should DESTROY the MCCain campaign by merely 'SWIFT BOATING' HIS SORRY, LYIN' BUTT FROM HERE TO SAIGON! I KNOW 2 MEN PERSONALLY WHO WERE IN THE 'HANOI HILTON' FOR AT LEAST 12-24 MONTHS THAT MCCAIN WAS. They are ABSOLUTELY ADAMANT that his 'POW Stories' are 99% BULL! First, he WASN'T beaten all that much and second, he almost invariably talked his head off before his captors inflicted too much pain. He was NEVER 'silent'. BUT HEY! WHEN THE DUST CLEARS OVER IRAN, THIS PLANET'S ATMOSPHERE WILL BE SO FOUL WITH RADIATION THAT 100'S OF 1,000'S WILL DIE WITHOUT A SINGLE AFTERTHOUGHT!

A man of questionable character

I've been saying this for quite some time about McSame. And reading about how he threw his first wife under the bus after he came home from 'Nam should make all sit up and see him for what he actually is. McSame lacks character and loyalty more than anything. If you haven't read the UK article Buzzflash has posted about how McCain dumped his first wife, you owe it to yourselves to read it ... everyone should read it. It is a clear psychological glimpse into the man's head. UK: The wife U.S. Republican John McCain callously left behind 6/9 http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-1024927... YOU ALL NEED TO READ THIS ARTICLE!!!!!

Glad Someone Finally Said It!

McCain has no more military expertise than I do, but he does have PTSD and I can think of no greater danger than having someone in the White House, in charge of U.S. nukes, with PTSD. I'm sorry that McCain went through what he did during his stay at the Hanoi Hilton. Most of us cannot even imagine the horror. Nevertheless, being a POW does not make a man or woman into a military strategist or even someone we can trust to lead this nation. As a matter of fact, I would say it does just the opposite. If McCain is the next president, I'm out of here, provided we are not on lock down by then.

I'm not

If McStain had done to my family what he did to the Vietnamese I would have done the same thing to him. Actually it would have been worse, I'm Irish.
