Dave Lindorff: Impeachment Countdown: Are Bush and Cheney Starting to Lose Sleep?

It’s been a while since I've written a decent Rant – however after reading the below Guest Contribution to BuzzFlash, it’s abundantly clear that the time for all of us to get on the impeachment bandwagon and run Bush and Cheney out of office has arrived – despite the cowardice of Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid! I don’t know who designated these two wimps as “the voice of the Democrats” – but it’s time that we let both of them know they have failed the American people, and rather than fighting for “the people” – both have become staunch enablers of the Bush Crime Family!

On November 6, 2001, President Bush uttered these infamous words – and now that we know the real terrorists are firmly entrenched in the White House, the President’s own words should be literally applied and followed: "You're either with us or against us in the fight against terror."

The junior senator from California on Wednesday stated publicly on national radio (the Ed Schultz Show) that in her view, impeachment of the president should be "on the table."

The reference, of course, was a pointed dig at Boxer's San Francisco neighbor, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who over a year ago announced that if Democrats were to regain control of the House, impeachment would not even be considered. It would, she famously vowed, be "off the table."

Of course, since Pelosi made that shameful declaration, brushing aside Bush's already committed crimes against the Constitution, it has become clear that this president has been refusing to enact dozens, perhaps hundreds, of laws duly passed by the Congress, and that he has ignored the clear will of the people to have the disastrous Iraq War brought to a quick, merciful end. As well, proof has mounted of presidential and vice presidential lying to put the country at war with Iraq. More recently, the vice president pushed for, and the president decided on, a commutation of I. "Scooter" Libby's sentence for perjury and obstruction of justice. Beyond that, news has come of a string of political firings of U.S. Attorneys, primarily because they had not acceded to the filing of harassing election fraud lawsuits designed to help keep Democrats away from the polls.

In short, evidence of outrageous administration lawlessness and abuse of power has been piling up for a year since Pelosi's statement, and during her 6-month stint as Speaker, during which time she has continued not just to block impeachment bills in Congress, but to work hard behind the scenes to undermine a growing grassroots impeachment movement.

Sen. Boxer's bold statement puts impeachment front and center inside the Beltway, and in the national media. It adds new weight to the bill calling for the impeachment of Dick Cheney that Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) filed in the House on April 24, and which now has 14 additional co-sponsors. MORE

No matter how you frame it, President Bush is a liar, very possibly a thief, and has all but told the American people and Congress where to go in no uncertain terms:

He has reversed himself on countless campaign promises, refuses to enforce our laws, and worst of all, has made the United Sates less secure and hated throughout the world by and through his gross incompetence, negligence, and downright contempt for the Constitution and Rule of Law. His “title” is Commander in Chief, but for all practical purposes, he has abdicated his Presidency to Vice-President Dick Cheney and now is nothing more than a figure-head – one with an attitude of contempt and loathing for his own countrymen, except for those twenty-one or twenty-two percent of the ultra-wealthy and misguided right-wing Christian fanatics that actually believe Mr. Bush speaks to God; It’s a shame they don’t comprehend that Bush’s “God” is his belief in power and wealth – both of which are contrary to Christian teachings – unless those concepts came from Pat Robertson’s Regent University, whose graduates take an oath to subvert the rule of law as it regards the separation of church and state, including but not limited to their duties when they are employed in governmental positions, most notably, their appointments to the Justice Department – which has summarily been relegated to an extension of White House policy and direction.

Once again, I’m going to remind you all of the history that was made when Joe Biden requested that we all call the White House and Congress to weigh-in on Bush’s Amnesty Bill, otherwise known as “The comprehensive Immigration Bill”, which was picked-up by a Blogger who provided us with the complete White House phone directory! It spread through the Internet like wildfire, and finally, the people were heard – and Congress had no choice but to acquiesce to “the people” – a rarity in these days of Lobbyists and special interest groups, but long overdue!

It’s time for us to make our voices heard again – but this time, forget making those calls for just one day! Instead, keep calling, at least once a day until Congress gets the message and we can actually see results – not rhetoric – and Bush and Cheney are impeached together as co-conspirators under the RICO Statutes, a fitting end to two of the vilest criminals to ever inhabit the White House!

Finally, I’m appealing to every major Blog and alternative News site on the Internet to run this article, or one drawn-up by your own editorial staff – and help to demonstrate that “we the people” do have the power to change “politics as usual” in Washington. It takes courage and tenacity to fight against the establishment, but all of you who run your own Blogs and News Sites have that power and ability – you owe it to the people who count on you for the real news and commentary that educates the common citizen, but without direction and a plan of action – even the best of sites are nothing more than rhetoric!
