A family emergency called me away in this, my penultimate week with BuzzFlash, however the upside was that a few dial-turning hours on the straight open road also commanded one my semi-annual updates on the peculiar mental workings of the Psycho Talking, Worst Person in the World, Rush Limbaugh. Throughout the course of any normal week I might catch a 10-second clip of this clown playing one those preceding roles, yet when I listen to him live and direct it always astounds me that the highlighted clips seem to be taken virtually at random, for he's actually three solid hours of interchangeable, indistinguishable madness.
Yesterday, for instance, on the return trip, I and presumably millions of others learned from Rush's primal ravings that a) the Gulf oil spill is but a negligible blip on the environment's radar, nothing to see or care about there, folks, and b) the Sherrod Affair proves only one thing: that President Obama and the NAACP are racist conspirators -- together they somehow connived this rather impressive kerfuffle -- intent on "smearing great, patriotic Americans," the tea partyers.
If you think that's nuts, you ain't heard nothin' yet.
Rush's honorable mention of those great Americans compelled one caller to -- what else? -- wholly agree and then add for bonus ditto-brownie points that the Republican Party at large, by comparison, is hopelessly ideologically impure and thus unworthy. Here, though, Rush leapt to the party's defense as he lectured the caller thusly: There still are a few real Republicans out there, namely Michele Bachmann and Shirley Angle (he repeatedly botched the name).
But we still hadn't arrived at the absolute apex of Rush's pre-rehearsed madness -- a perfected inanity that nearly sent me careening off the road in laughter. All those other Republicans? Do you know what they do, according to Rush? Well, said Rush next, they sit and wait for Democrats to take the lead, and then fall obediently in line.
I could picture his devoted listeners, sitting on the floor with legs crossed, peeling bananas and scratching their sides and squealing high-pitched vowel sounds of abject agreement -- vacant the foggiest notion of why, other than that Rush said it.
As a study in virulent brainwashing, however, The Rush Limbaugh Show is invaluable.
Its chief propagandistic tool, as I was reminded Tuesday, while listening on my way out of town, is that time-honored instrument of all demagogues and tyrants -- and of all austere ideological stripes, from Mao to Goebbels: There is only One Truth; and above even that, there is only one source of The Truth, which of course renders even pre-established Truth as malleable, depending on the informational needs of the moment.
That's why Tuesday's lesson was both ingenious and priceless. For three hours, as the Sherrod Affair was metastasizing elsewhere on the air and in print as a malignant pseudoconservative tumor, Rush sputtered in rage to his followers that they must keep in mind that the "entire Washington media" is a "big myth." It, "they" are not journalists but malicious propagandists, in "daily cooperation or conspiracy or collusion" with the prevailing forces of liberal darkness.
Three seamless hours of that garbage, pound, pound, pound. Perhaps God only knows how many preceding times Rush had belabored this political re-education point, but this particular refresher course, as Rush well knew, was urgently needed, lest his minions stray into the beckoning light of reality.
Which leads us to an unavoidable question, posed trenchantly this week by White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs, who, let's face it, is seldom trenchant: Why do you guys -- the Washington media -- even cover this crap? As much as they, the Obama administration, bungled the Sherrod Affair, why must the White House perpetually face a press corps more consumed by the empty thrills of right-wing malignancy -- which was once peddled only internally to a captive, weak-minded audience -- than preeminent matters of state?
Which further leads to this fantasy of mine: I'd love to see President Obama issue invitations to Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Glenn Beck and all other prominent right-wing madmen to join him in a nationally televised forum in which he'd take all deranged questions -- something akin to what he uniquely staged with (soon humiliated) Congressional Republicans a few months back.
I doubt many "hosts" would show; their specialty is one-dimensional propaganda, which is both incapable of and allergic to intelligent, respectful debate. But the ensuing rout of those who did show would either quiet the far right for a while or shove it so completely over the edge of hysteria that the national press might decide, in the wake of a few exhausting news cycles, to start ignoring these clowns.

The spineless Democrats keep being victims of malicous attacks with no basis in fact. What do they do? Exactly what their attackers want. If Democrats would start standing up and calling out Limbaugh and Fox spokesmodels as liars, things might change. Instead, Democrats continue to appear on Fox and treat Fox as a legitimate news organization. Fox is nothing more than the media arm of the Republican Party and Limbaugh is head of the same. It is largely due to your favorite media devil and the very methods you report in this post: the methodical, repetitious destruction of rational thought through the fluid usage and abuse of facts. Because too many people are too stupid or too lazy to do their own thinking for them, the media is protecting their cash cows designed to take advantage of this mental weakness in the American public. The mental weakness allows people to blindly accept what is dropped in front of their eyes and into their ears provided it emotionally stimulates based on personal prejudices or secret desires.
Remember when Rush was thrown off Monday Night Football? It was because he couldn't control his bigotry. Speaking his "mind" would have offended a large segment of the viewership which just so happens NOT to be while, thus adversely affecting the amount of money ABC (at the time) and the NFL would rake in showing ads featuring fast car driving on empty roads to bountiful bikini babes bearing ice cold brewskis.
If the general media were as afraid of Rush driving business away as ABC and the NFL were, he'd be off the air tomorrow. But money supercedes patriotism and a sense of the common good. Rush will continue to abuse the First Amendment to spout his vile effluent until people stop listening.
But for Obama to debate these liars, they would have to admit a point when it could no longer be defended. They will never do this. All Obama has to do is make just one mistake and they will devour him like the pack of hyenas they are. He cannot win this game on these terms.

...In fact, the MSM consistently prop up and defend these malodorous propagandists on FOX and elsewhere, without any understanding that this psuedojournalism is reflecting poorly on them as well and destroying their business model--and therein lies a real problem for the White House; they need a strategy to combat this and force the MSM to distance themselves from Fox and Limbaugh and to be CALLED OUT when they refuse to act as gatekeepers and report the objective truth rather than a "he said/she said" narrative.
CNN is obviously rolling out its new fall strategy in branding--the choice for the "silent majority" who are weary of ideological reporting and seek "real journalism" over manufactured controversy.
For the last 2 days Anderson Cooper and Rick Sanchez have taken to attacking and debunking FOX NEWS head on, and have done some damn good (if well overdue) dissecting and actual reporting on the Sherrod debacle. But the problem is, this is actually just positioning and triangulating against FOX and MSNBC. How do I know this? Because Anderson Cooper can't get through 2 sentences of real journalism exposing the Right's lies without attacking the Left for imaginary balance--

And then, after having provided this smear against the Left about 8 times in 20 minutes, Cooper doesn't offer one scintilla, one iota, one thimbleful of evidence to support his claim. So all his good reporting and actual journalism goes for naught.
