The most charming line in President Obama's thoroughly political putdown of Congressional Republicans yesterday, aimed squarely at the fall elections, was that "there are times when you put elections aside; this is one of those times."
He was also unwilling, because of his irreversible devotion to an illusory bipartisanship, to call them kidnappers of American "tradition," faithless, hyperpartisan, hypocritical, irresponsible or malicious -- all of which he promptly did.
Yes, the silly season is upon us, a time in which the president shifts from governing to campaign mode -- the latter of which some among his vocal base wish Obama had never left, even though the former has accomplished more landmark legislation within 18 months than any president since Lyndon Baines Johnson.
At any rate the base cheered him yesterday: Finally! was the word and emotion most commonly deployed by his media "friends" to describe the timing of the president's feistiness, although the same voices yelled Finally! over the weekend, too, and Finally! in Nevada before then, and Finally! in Missouri before that, and Finally! countless other times over the last year or so. Indeed, every time the president has tactically blasted the GOP, the vocal base has screamed Finally!
Think maybe it's time to change the shibboleth to Again?
No, no, of course not, for that would change the critical left's superior narrative of Obama as wuss -- a narrative whose rather unsightly undercurrent is that cheerleading is always preferable to actual achievements; for cheerleading is prodigious fun, cheerleading is emotionally rewarding, cheerleading offers the tribal satisfaction of ruthlessly gutting one's enemies. Governing is dull.
Thankfully, though, the Obama administration has mostly ignored the critical exhortations of its media friends -- among whom I, from time to unthinking time, have been a part -- by famously traveling its own strategic road and timing its own political timing.
This insufferable slight, this rude rebuff has naturally endeared the administration to very few pundits -- say, remember the 2008 campaign? remember the ceaseless pounding that Obama do this or do that immediately or all would be surely lost? -- who fancy themselves ultimate political strategists.
A few, however, do "get it" and continue to get it, those few with a discreet and apparently rare sense of history and delicate appreciation of political realities: Newsweek's Jonathan Alter, for instance, and usually the Post's E.J. Dionne, and for heaven's sake even the Times' Paul Krugman finally! came to realize that all divine economics are inescapably corrupted by subterranean politics.
The immense (and momentarily tragic) irony of all this -- that is, so much of the print, broadcast and blogospheric criticism of Obama as unpugilistic, unprogressive dud -- is that once Obama is out of office, the now-critical left will indeed change its scolding tune and recall with sickening, sentimental fondness the 44th president as the untouchable paradigm of modern progressivism.
That's what happened with FDR, it happened with JFK, it's still in the process of reinvention with respect to LBJ.
I can hear it already, as some George Bush III is sitting there in the Oval Office -- elected in large part because of the left's unremitting savagery against its own -- applying the finishing reactionary touches to this exhausted empire: Wow, remember when Obama was in office? Those were the days, the resplendent, exciting days of real progressive change -- and now they're gone, possibly forever.
You can bet with absolute assurance on precisely that reformulated narrative. In the 1930s, FDR was vilified by leftward "friends" for schmoozing with crass corporate powers and advocating too-meek initiatives, such as the early legislative outlines of Social Security. JFK was vilified for his reflexive anticommunism and civil rights apathy. LBJ's vilification came in much the same form as FDR's.
Now, they are all -- all of them -- progressive deities.
But whatever their faults, you know what? They did things their way. How about, with a little historical perspective in mind, the hypercritical left allowing Obama to do the same?

The best place to purchase Louis Vuitton online.
It is not easy being a Gossip Girl. Or so star Leighton Meester found yesterday as she carried a whole bunch of Discount Louis Vuitton Handbags around Paris while filming a scene for the show. The 24-year-old actress wore a purple short satin dress with a black lacy shrug and high heels as she balanced the Gucci, Chanel and Louis Vuitton bags over her arms. Weighed down by Disocunt Hermes Handbag New York, she had to keep her balance in very high heels, as she tottered along in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower. Meester, who plays scheming Manhattan socialite Blair Waldorf in the show, is currently in the French capital to film scenes for its forthcoming new season which airs in the U.S. this autumn. The drama series, which revolves around the lives of privileged New York kids, is well known for its sense of style. And Meester clearly enjoys being able to indulge her love of fashion on set. ‘If I don’t take risks with fashion, where the hell am I going to take risks?’ she told Harper’s Bazaar last year, name checking Stella McCartney, Chloé, and Calvin Klein as some of her favourite designers. She also said being on the show meant she could now afford to spalsh out more on brand designer discount handbag.

as described Chanel bags;
I don't think he's a "wuss", Carpenter....
I don't think Obama is a "wuss". He's a paluka who takes unpredicted, inexpliable dives in every first round. As with other famous palukas (played by Brando in "On the Waterfront"; Bruce Willis in "Pulp Fiction") he's being bribed with something to hit the canvas. Unlike these characters, however, he seems entirely unlikely to ever throw that redemptive left hook. As long as the corporate mob-bosses reward him for hedging their bets, he'll keep taking the fall without trying. That's not being a wuss - that's being a mercenary.
Boycott Buzzflash???
Why is it that progressives are stuck in a no-win game that has all been defined by the DNC/DLC? The major reason, I think, is because progressives websites like Buzzflash have enabled it; they haven't really dared to do what was necessary to break out of it. Instead, they have offered a lot of high class diversions, along with a storyline that inevitably confirms the persistence of the two party system.
If the groups had been bought off by someone as cynical as Karl Rove (or the DNC), it couldn't be much worse. Examples: The Huff has literally turned into a scandal sheet. Oh, there's a lot of good content, true, but that doesn't mitigate its utter loss of focus. And at this particular watershed time in history, Buzzflash (etc.) offers us DNC shills, such as the author of this "blog piece." David Sirota was right. Following Buzzflash's example, doesn't that say something about the actual loyalties of many (if not most) "progressive groups" on the web?
Progressives can indeed vote Green in November, and I will. But then what? The Green's are known for nominating people who are unelectable, and proudly so. To say that The Greens are not stragically motivated, to put it mildly, is something of an understatement. Let's try and remember that whoever wins the 2012 election gets the nuclear access codes. By that time, it seems likely that the Dems will be toast and the Greens will be tofu. There isn't any time to waste, therefore, in non-strategic gambits.
As ever, I believe that it is the moral obligation of Buzzflash, the Huff, Truthdig, the Kos, etc., to endorse a call to arms toward the creation of a viable third party over the next two years consisting of progressives + independents + disaffected Democrats. Until that happens, we might consider boycotting these progressive sites, noting that the stakes couldn't be higher since, if nothing gets done, there is a distinct possibility that Palin or someone like her will win a plurality of votes in 2012.
Then again, you may wish to consult your children and grandchildren. Ask them if they think that a nuclear winter will work as an antidote to global warming. . . .
Wam Bam, Batman??? oh sure
The wam bam guy is running scared. Falls for one bogus video after another.
Why? because the wam bam guy is sold on the repub's "good ideas", so whenever they get a good idea to defame a demo he or his administration, whatever that is, vaults into action and wam bam blasts the demo out of news and right into the bigger news.
O'bama is batman, the 'pugs have him hanging upside down.
I firmly believe you need
A real Paragon of strength
In the latest evidence that there resides a bonifide pussy in the Oval Office, the clearly amnesiatic president can't remember the FOX/ACORN doctored video from just a few weeks ago and so falls for another clearly doctored Fox video and forces a good black woman from her job at the USDA because of the sheer, unadulterated FEAR of what Sean Hannity and Glenn Beck might say about him.
I'll just cut and clip from Digby on the subject:
Weak Back Hand
by digby
When our new overlord Andrew Breitbart says jump, the White House says, "how high?"
Naturally, the administration panicked like a bunch of frightened little children:
I also have to wonder if they know what the optics of this are. If two-bit sociopathic wingnuts can scare them to this extent with obviously doctored videos, what happens when they see a real threat? Are they going to flap their arms like penguins and run around in circles screaming "they're coming to get us, run for your lives!!?" At this point, that doesn't seem entirely ridiculous.- Digby
I wait with bated breath to hear Carp's many excuses for Obama's race panic and how we're all delusional and Obama's really just standing there "like a stonewall" in the face of the enemy and showing strength beyond the ability of a liberal to comprehend.
Krugman came around, huh?
I think this is the article you're referencing, where Krugman realizes that "all divine economics are inescapably corrupted by subterranean politics." The only problem is, he's not defending our poor little president like you are, he's saying Obama is too focused on winning the news cycle and doesn't give a damn about really fixing the economy.

Wham-bamming or missing the train?
You know, Carp, the people losing their jobs over the last few weeks aren't really that damn impressed with Obama wham-bamming an issue that is finally a done deal, now that WV has had Byrd's replacement sworn in. When the issue was in doubt and leadership was required on this issue, Obama was his usual no-show, timid self, saving political capital for use some other time; but once the dems corraled the 60th vote for unemployment compensation, he comes riding in to save the day that was already saved.
What a fucking wuss.
What he was actually doing out there was ginning up faux political capital, taking credit for something he had absolutely nothing to do with, not that I'd expect you to notice. When the game was in doubt and people were falling off the rolls, he risked NOTHING. If you're going to "catapult the propaganda" you've got to get out there and get loud and be consistent in your message.
Epic FAIL.
Oh, did I mention what a wuss he is?
So yes, he Finally got off his butt to make a statement about it after langushing in obscurity for several weeks (sheez, so much for multi-tasking). We say Finally because this is his modus operandi--waiting until a situation is in crisis before he opens his goddamn piehole about it. And even then he won't stay on message. He's too busy contemplating cutting food stamps to protect Arne Duncan's already huge budget at Education to waste his beautiful mind on the unemployed. After all, as Axlerod said, "There isn't the appetite for it (more spending)."
We desperately need more spending, of course, but don't expect Obama to lead or expend any capital trying persuade anyone of it. Don't get me wrong--If it should happen to occur and a jobs bill were to be passed (fat chance), Obama will be glad to take credit for it--as long as he doesn't have to risk anything to bring that about.
Wuuuusssie.
The desire of the left for Obama to engage his enemies hasn't a damn thing to do with emotional rewards; it's smart politics. People crave leadership. They want their president to clearly and forcefully enunciate what he believes in--rightly or wrongly--and to get out there and fight for it. You have such a palpable disdain for your readers and liberals in general that it is almost galling.
Nobody who knows anything thinks FDR or LBJ were dieties; FDR tried to pack the Court and LBJ had Vietnam.
As far as Obama being a progressive icon in the same mold--Sure, if the country retains it's inexerable push to the right and we get a real rightwing nutcase as president (almost sure to happen at some point), Obama may seem progressive by comparison. Is this supposed to be breaking news or something?
But comparing Obama to FDR or LBJ domestically? I think not. (I would, however, compare Obama's Afghan policy to LBJ's Vietnam)
Hey Carp, do you think you could spend just one day not carping about the "ungrateful" Left? You're like a one-trick pony with no trick.
Carpy's Wam! Bam! Joker Moment, Again
Is there no one who will come to Carpy's defense, finally?
Here, let me try to defend him.
Carpy, after reading your entire post, I do agree with this one statement you made today:
"...I, from time to unthinking time..."
Yes Carpy, your "unthinking time" is whenever you write your pro-DINO/anti-progressive dribble.
Oh well, that explains why I'm not a defense attorney.
Buzzflash, as long as you carry the tagline, "Progressive News and Commentary with an Attitude", with Carpy in your employ, you are most certainly NOT progressive.
You should either dispense with the false advertising or the false progressive Joker.
i thought their was hope
I thought their was hope for you P.M. in your last editorial propaganda you compared Obama to Truman and you started out comparing Obama to Johnson, still insulting to these men who were fighters for the people but not as bad as your phony FDR comparisons.Low and Behold you are back, in the middle of your propaganda comparing Obama to FDR and saying his 2nd term like FDR's will be more progressive.I am sure many Democrats like their republican counterparts will believe your lies, stupidity knows no bounds but for people able to think for themselves ,and see where Obama is going your lies are pathetic ,just like you.The best thing Obama could do for this country is not run for a second term because I guarentee those of us who voted for him once will not be fooled a second time.
The Silly Season Indeed
I'm no fan of LBJ. He was one of the most venal politicians to ever hold the highest public office in the land. But for P.M. to compare the tripe that has been marketed as health-care reform and financial reform to the Voting Rights Act and the Medicare Act is just plain silly.
Well, that's a little harsh, isn't it?
I don't think this is like a stick with two ends but no middle. You don't have to be either a quiet progressive or an electioneering huckster. I don't think the "progressives" want either/or behavior out of the Prez.
I'm a progressive, or at least Glenn Beck has accused me of being one. What I would like to see from Obama is that he makes use of all the tools at his disposal. One that he has been loathe to apply is the bully pulpit. The other is the mandate given to him by a 10 million vote margin in November 2008.
Obama ran on the buzzwords "hope" and "change". Progressives have been left hoping for change on most of the issues that we see destroying the country. The integration of business and government, financial deregulation, endless war, unjust immigration laws, unfair tax codes, corporate personhood, same foreign policy trajectory, and so on. OK, we get it, the economy is in a shambles. So why not address the problems that caused it from the list above rather than trying to inject trillions of dollars into it and hope it comes out all right? It's hard to think that things will be any different when Goldmann Sachs has the White House by the nutsack.
It would be refreshing to see Obama articulating some truth into a mic now and then rather than the usual BS platitudes that we've been hearing for the last 50 years. Obama's strategy of trying to bring in the GOP has resulted in some of the most flawed and useless legislation we've ever seen. Health care "reform" is not going to go down in history as some FDR-esque piece of wonderment, it's going to prove to be a no-mind non-solution to a problem that kills Americans by the 10s of thousands every year and is ruining American business. The financial reform bill... another joke.
This sounds like a lot of Obama bashing. To be honest, I did not vote for him (even though I worked on his campaign in Iowa). I love the man, I think he has a lot of potential, and he doesn't have to be a demagogue or a shrinking violet to achieve it. He just needs to start working a bit of Reality into his routine. Down here in the trenches, we don't need headlines we need some help and we need it now, not in 4 years, not in 4 months, we need it NOW.
-Wexler
If I would have known I was going to live this long, I would have taken better care of myself.
If "his own way"
is more blatant corporate giveaways like that Insurance Bondage horror - then no, I will not vote for more of that. Sorry. It is what is being done that galls, not what has not been done.
Social security will be the last straw, I think. And jobless people cannot wait around for Batman to appear. Their sense of historical perspective is a bit obscured by not being able to keep their homes or buy food.
In addition, the rhetoric has completely lost its power; I never cared for it anyway. What is Wham! Bam! to you is just eye-rolling-inducing blather to me.
Obama cheerleaders and exhorters need to understand that. The net is awash with "articles' like this, and they are missing the point, and missing their mark.
And perhaps it is time to stop pointing to social security as a program that started out weakly - because Obama will certainly sign off on diminishing it and indeed ensuring its demise. That is some perspective that better not used as a shining example, I think! Increasing H-1b visas, bailing out corporations that then sent more jobs overseas - do you think no one notices?
