President Obama is a supremely rational leader in a supremely irrational age. That is, perhaps, an oversimplified construct, but to me it neatly explains the Greek tragedy -- or Shakespearean comi-tragedy -- of his reign, and at no time was this on more vivid display than in his appearance last week at the House Republicans' deeper retreat into madness.
There the emperor stood, staring into a sea of uncomprehending visages and taking all comers, much to the latter's chagrin. As the farce proceeded, the frauds believed they had him on the run, only to realize later that he had systematically disrobed them.
Obama's barbed contrasts were striking: He was no Manchurian designer of Bolshevik plots, he assured the GOPers; nor could he fathom how cutting more revenue could ever balance our Republican-cooked books, as they have assured their constituents; nor was he doing any of the "crazy stuff that's going to destroy America," which, he graciously left unspoken, has in reality been the sole purview of ultraconservatism for lo these many years.
I missed this live performance, catching snippets only later in the day on MSNBC's two-hour revue. And as either fate or serendipity would have it, I was, at the time, also rereading portions of the diplomatist and Sovietologist George F. Kennan's magnificent Memoirs. That in itself, of course, is undemonstrative of the hand of fate, but upon landing on this passage, which I'll quote here at some length, just as I was listening to Obama chuckle about his Bolshevik designs, indeed was:
In tens of thousands of instances, over the course of the years, real events had to be denied, false ones invented, or true facts distorted beyond recognition, in order to produce a version that was compatible with the [Russian Communist] party's neurotic vision of the environment in which it lived....
For every situation or event having political meaning there were always two versions: the true one and the fabricated one ... The fabricated version having once been created, it at once became the authoritative one, and was then treated with all the respect and seriousness which would have been owing to the actual truth....
[Party] officials ... were often perfectly well aware of the existence and nature of both versions, the real one and useful one ... But it was seldom considered safe to talk in terms of the real one, once the other had been manufactured and made known....
It has never ceased to be a source of wonder to me that a political regime composed of men obviously perfectly sane and robust in their personal psychic make-up could, as a collective political entity, exhibit in so extreme a degree the characteristic symptoms of an advanced psychosis.
The applicability of Kennan's analysis of the "Russian Communist" party to today's Grand Old Party is, I suppose, merely reflective of the interchangeability of authoritarian personalities and their strategies.
Still, the comparison awes -- from the contemporary party's "dreamlike" distortions of war and peace and perceived threats and true economic security to the utmost seriousness with which not only it, but the cooperative modern media, afford its preposterousness, and which Obama was merely pointing out with remarkable diplomatic restraint.
The Washington Post's Dan Balz noted that "Friday's encounter between President Obama and House Republicans [was] riveting political theater. The question is whether it will be remembered as a moment that began to ease the tensions between the two parties -- or an asterisk in this era of polarized politics."
The asterisk came within hours, as House Minority Leader John Boehner blasted Obama's beseeching realism with a pugilistic press release titled "Rhetoric versus reality: President Obama repeats discredited talking points during dialogue with House GOP," followed Saturday morning by another negative statement: "The president himself helped put to rest once and for all baseless claims by members of his own administration that Republicans are the 'party of no.' "
"For every situation or event ..." Reality denied, fabrications invented, distortions intoned -- collectively, "the characteristic symptoms of an advanced psychosis," which in Kennan's earlier diagnostic case endured until a profound unseriousness destroyed from within.
Obama did indeed disrobe the imposters last Friday, yet increasingly it seems we are all too willing to embrace naked irrationality. In a sane world, rather than anticipating a resurgence Republicans would be rehearsing a disappearing act. Whether the former's apparentness is merely impersonal historical determinism in play or a final act scripted by the capricious gods of tragedy, I haven't a clue -- but, dear heaven, how we do seem knowingly destined for the cliff.

problem with this analysis
is that PM presents it as vintage Obama, when in fact it was playing against the type he's been presenting for the past year.
Depends on how you have been viewing Obama
If you have seen Obama as taking the steps that are required by the conditions on the ground, you will see a remarkable continuity. One might say that he operates from an overview, much like a master chess player plays the game from both sides. Having allowed the other branches of government to be part of the grand reform necessary, the Conservative majority of the Supreme court has shown that it will be no part of progress toward furthering the aims of American democracy -- they are on the other side of the divide that has been there since the Boston Tea Party, the Corporation side. Congress has exhibited the same effeteness it has had for the last 4 decades; alas, the fear tactics of opposition (to democracy) have created a paralysis there. So Obama has had to bypass these entities (and while passing, take a whack at them akin to a Dim Mak blow), directly confront the enemies of democracy, and set an example of real leadership. Life is not a static thing -- one formula does not guarantee continued success. Applying different formulas as conditions change and knowing when to do that is the mark of a leader -- actually a commander.

Mass. Loss
Coakley was left in the VERY uncomfortable position of either supporting a piece o' crap health care bill or running against her own party. (Looking back, probably the way to have gone.) She could then have pointed out with no hypocracy that Brown had already voted for the same legislation for Mass. that Romney shoved down their throats, and that nobody in Mass. likes anyway. Had she done this she might well have won (instead of lost) that election in her sleep.
Re "Fooled you once" and MA election
Too many are over-interpreting the Massachusetts election. Coakley was a weak candidate who ran a weak campaign. Even this Democrat, active on her local ward committee, doesn't think it's bad for the incumbent party sometimes to take a hit. How else to wake people up? In retrospect I don't think Coakley would have been a good senator. How can you "represent" the residents of your state if you think going out and shaking hands is a waste of time? You don't have to care what people think?
I'm aware that Scott Brown benefitted by funding from outside Massachusetts. But he won the election because many Democrats didn't bother to vote (weak candidate!) and because many independents, who are more than 50% of registered voters in MA, were frustrated, angry even, at the endless dickering in the Senate. If the Republicans could get legislation passed without a 60 vote majority, why can't the Democrats do the same? There's something wrong with the picture.
In any case, post-election polling reveals that many Brown voters want better - ie more progressive and fairer - health care reform. Brown's election does NOT suggest a surge of conservative, right-wing, Republican just say 'no' public opinion in Massachusetts.

I feel your angst
Carp, you have indeed put your finger on the pulse of today's GOP. It's why i have had a knot in the pit of my stomach about the future of this country for several years now.
Obviously, the GOP has embraced and internalized a key tenet of Straussian Neocon philosophy--creating one's own reality--i.e. one that can and will be embraced by a large swath of the populace.
Why would they do this? Only they can say, but it's obvious to me that they no longer have the courage of their ideas or their ability to sell them to an increasingly minority-laden democraphic.
So the Big Lie is the only way out for them politically (or so they see it).
The 1st and main key to success was to use their immense communication infrastructure to de-legitimize all other sources of information for their consumers. Once you've done that, everything else is a piece of cake. People will voluntarily shut out anything other than the desired neocon message. It works--perhaps even better than Orwell envisioned, and the dems have yet to understand the true depth of the problem or how to combat it.
To me, what the GOP is doing is flat out evil (and I do hate using that word). It's why I really see no future for this country unless something in this dynamic changes. You can't have 2 parties who can't agree on the color of the sky and effectively solve problems.
A useful analogy
This is why I say the difference between Democrats and Republicans is simple: Democrats are lawyers/systems managers, Republicans are used car salesmen.
In other words Republican pol...iticians know their audience is already in the market for a load of crap and fashion the sales pitch accordingly. Bumper sticker slogans trump policy in Republican hands, having perfected the used car salesman's techniques of b^tt kissing and lying to make the sale into high art.

Letter to Obama
Last night I finally watched your Q&A event with congressional Republicans, and I was very impressed. It is no easy feat to so thoroughly throw back so successfully each question and criticism from a room full of professional haters. Of course, it is much easier when you place your own platform within touching distance of that of your opponents, so that gradually they discover that all they really object to is yourself, by virtue of their own prejudices.
So; it was a politically brilliant showcase for your remarkable intellect and debating skills, not to mention your steady and solid resolve in the face of angry opposition. You successfully triangulated the field so that they found themselves boxed in, and their fundamental shallowness exposed. It may even open the door for you to actually begin working with them (apparently your primary goal as president, so congradulations!) but if so you must be honest with yourself: by this point you'll be working on THEIR house!
By your grand and impressive gesture you have ceded even more ideological ground to the corporatist wrecking crew - or at the very least you have firmly reinforced their perceived possession of that ground. I guess we'll see where this gets you.
I'd like to see you do something similar with your own party. You have put a great deal more distance between yourself and Progressives in your party than that which constitutes the intimate proximity you have assumed with many of the angry hypocrites you faced in that room yesterday. I, for one, would feel a lot better if I was given any indication that you even speak at all with Progressives like Bernie Sanders, Dennis Kucinich, Russ Feingold, let alone in a televised showcase event. All you've done in their regards for the past year is to ignore them, and even openly ridicule their positions.
Please show some shred of respect to your own base, and propose a similar event with those in your own party who have been pointedly barred from the table.

I was thinking the same thing
Unfortunately, it'll never happen because it's much easier to debate and dismantle a group of lies and talking points than explain why he has made corporate backroom deals, continued the Bush unitary executive and defended the unlawful Patriot Act, etc, etc. I'd love to see it, I love to see Kucinich light into him on any number of subjects, but I'm afraid we'll just have to use our imagination. Great letter, though.
The GOP
Oh, what an Orwellian world they weave, when they practice to deceive.
