Joe Lieberman: The Unforgiven

THE FIFTH COLUMNIST by P.M. Carpenter

The New York Times had a brief but valuable overview yesterday of this year's graduating class of what you might call miraculously reformed extremists -- those recidivist dunderheads who throughout the presidential campaign landed eager blows well below Barack Obama's belt, yet are now the very models of bipartisanship, brotherly love, moderation and understanding.

They're the political Jimmy Swaggarts of 2008. They had their inadmissible fun; now it's time for you to forgive and forget.

In most cases I'd have it no other way -- not because I'm some fountain of Christian charity, but only because that's how political grown-ups do it. In valedictorian Joe Lieberman's case, however, I'll make an exception.

Because Lieberman crossed from mere, eager dunderhead status to premeditated traitor. There's just no other way to put it.

Here, for instance, is a representative line from how Lieberman himself so indelicately put it time and again on the campaign trial, while traveling with the enemy: The presidential contest, he would say, was "between one candidate, John McCain, who has always put the country first … and one candidate who has not."

Even without those last, six little words, Lieberman had committed the unforgivable. He wasn't content, as a Democrat, or independent Democrat, or whatever the hell he calls himself these days, to say he harbored serious foreign policy disagreements with his quasiparty's candidate and then leave it at that.

There's even legitimate question as to Joe's political affair having come from "principle," as he liked to insist ad nauseam. Rather, it is plenty reasonable to conjecture that his fling was mostly just payback -- perhaps, even, nothing but. In Joe's morally twisted world, his party had done him wrong in 2006, so now he'd flaunt some reciprocal indiscretions publicly. That'll show 'em.

Furthermore, as the Times notes, as a featured speaker at the Republican National Convention -- yes, hard as it is to imagine, the Republican National Convention -- Lieberman thrilled in defaming Obama (entirely out of context, naturally) before millions of viewers for having "vot[ed] to cut off funding for our troops on the ground."

Why of course. What else would a flag lapel-pin hating, pledge-of-allegiance despising, madrassa-attending, fist-bumping friend of our nation's foes do? Why, that Democrat doesn't just put country second: he puts our enemies first. This, from the Democratic vice-presidential candidate of 2000.

Fast forward to the electorally inevitable. Now, says a spokesman for the principled senator, "it’s genuinely time to find unity and move forward behind the new president."

Wait a minute. What did I miss? Get behind a president who refuses to put country first? That's principled? It seems to me that now, more than ever, would be the time to stand vigorously opposed to such a man.

But forget that, because it gets even better -- and by that, I mean it got downright Swaggartesque. Which is to say, on the heels of Obama's decisive victory, Lieberman issued a statement in praise of "his historic and impressive" accomplishment, adding, with teardrops falling gently on the fax machine, I'm sure, that "the American people are a people of extraordinary fairness."

Once again, Joe was talking out of his ass, and sideways. What he really meant was: I sure hope Harry Reid proves himself a man of unwarranted fairness, because there's no doubt about it, I committed the unforgivable: I struck at the king and failed to kill him.

Thankfully, it doesn't quite sound like Harry plans on being "extraordinary" this year. Recently on CNN he said, "Joe Lieberman has done something that I think was improper, wrong, and I’d like -- if we weren’t on television, I’d use a stronger word of describing what he did." No need, Harry.

So go ahead. Kick his two-faced butt out of the caucus, Harry. It seems to me that Republicans have more use for a socially liberal neoconservative than do Democrats for a traitorous warmonger.

The Times piece incorporated other rehabilitating dunderheads whose rhetorical extremes got the better of them, such as the exotically deranged Michele Bachmann and some lady from Alaska. And to them I'd say, No problem. You may be nuts, but you were only doing what you thought was your partisan duty.

But as for you, Crazy Joe? Good riddance. Or at least I hope that's what Harry finally says.

JOE LIEBERMAN IS A TRAITOR

I feel Joe Lieberman certainly has a right to vote for and back who ever he wishes! However for him to keep going back and forth because of who he thinks is in power and can help his own political career should be banned from the Democratic Party! Who needs a person of such little character on our side. As the old saying goes "WITH FRIENDS LIKE HIM, WHO NEEDS ENEMIES?" Dump his you know what and let him go back to the Republicans! They deserve one another and certainly show similar qualities. Good Bye Traitor Joe!!!

Not Now! No How!

Senator Lieberman has every right to vote for the candidate of his choice. That's a private decision. Campaigning for the candidate of the opposing political party, in public -- day after day --- week after week. Nah! That's not a right -- that's a calculated choice. If Joe Lieberman is allowed to escape unscathed from "sleeping with the enemy", the Democratic Party has yet to grow a spine. Until they grow a spine --- they get nothing else from me. No contributions. None of my time. I don't support Republicans. Not Now. No How.

Trouble is that Harry Reid

Trouble is that Harry Reid may feel his personal power is greatened by having a larger caucus, while Joe will threaten to join the Republican caucus if stripped of his own power. See how it works with corrupted people? Fortunately Obama got out of the Senate before he could get too far sucked in.

I don't like to lose a DEMOCRAT... but what he is, is not THAT

I hope Joe The Liar continues to vote what he claims he believes in. He should. I don't like him. I don't like his politics. I don't like what he stands for, and most often don't like his point of view. He is probably a MAVERICK. WHAT I DON'T LIKE SEEING is someone who is NOT a DEMOCRAT be the DEMOCRAT REP ON A COMMITTEE. We have MANY MANY GOOD MINDS on our side of the house--- certainly there is at least ONE true democrat who deserves and can well serve in this position----- why would we go ELSEWHERE ? ?

Post-election Opportunity...

One of the most notable political dichotomies of our time relates to how much hope and trust a majority of American voters was willing to invest in a new president-elect, Barrak Obama, all the while maintaining its emphatic disapproval for members of congress—as a whole. Let’s face it, if Obama is ever to become a successful president, Congressional Democrats must first begin to address their own well-deserved, public relations nightmare. Undeniably, both Speaker Pelosi and Majority Leader Reid have many times served to exacerbate voters discontent: most notably, Pelosi with her “impeachment is off the table” mantra, and now, Reid with his “walk softly and don’t even think about carrying a stick” strategy visa vi political renegade Joe Lieberman. For several years, the latter has habitually poked his finger into the collective progressive eye. Finally, with the election hard won, time for retribution has come—as has an opportunity for validating one’s own constituency.

Poor Joe

His rightful place is being the right hand of the President, anyone, whichever won. He deserved it, and wanted it SOOO badly!!! Joe was wronged again!!! Now, who is he going to follow around? Maybe Harry can create a new position at the White House, name Joe "Vice-Principle", give him a pooper-scooper and let him follow around President Obama's new puppy!

Lieberman-Cartman

Lieberman is like Cartman on South Park. Everyone knows he's an asshole but he is an essential part of the plot line. Even when he gets beat up by Wendy for an unforgivable sin, Cartman finds some way to rationalize his importance to the group. He has to be tolerated because the writers want him in the show, and Lieberman must be tolerated because his constituency wants him in the Senate. That doesn't mean that Hillary shouldn't beat the shit out of him.

TOLERATED?

ABSOLUTELY NOT!!! It is long past time for the Democrats to grow a spine, and that includes President Obama!!! Dems have for too long been missing that piece of anatomy, and that is why the DNC is in such deep debt. People have not been contributing, because they have been angry with the low-rated Democratic Congress because of their lack of SPINE!!! We are FURIOUS with TRAITOR JOE, and Obama had better understand that right now!!! I have signed at least 3 PETITIONS to have him removed. Our good-will toward Obama will quickly dry up, if he does not understand his supporters' psyche. If Lieberman remains in control of ANY committee, he will be able to control investigations of the Obama Administration and ANY Congressional Democrat. Is that what Democrats want? TRAITOR JOE IS A TROUBLE MAKER!!! GET RID OF HIM IMMEDIATELY!!!

Like a battered wife, the

Like a battered wife, the Dems keep taking him back, hoping that he has changed ...... be done with him, let him be the RepubliCon that he is ....... he'll make a fine runningmate for Moose Palin in 2012 ......

I Like Where Your Head Is At, Pop :D

I say let Holy Joe the Quisling Lieberman twist in the wind - he worked hard for this, he earned it many times over...Let Him Have It.
