John McCain's Ballistic Misfire

THE FIFTH COLUMNIST by P.M. Carpenter

Sen. McCain, take it from someone who misspent much of his youth in a neighborhood that specialized in unseemly persuasion: When preparing to sucker punch the other guy in the form of a swift kick in the balls, one normally shouldn't telegraph one's intentions.

But that's just what you've done, you hopeless klutz.

Last week McCain unleashed a veritable avalanche of pre-attack intel, complete with the precise timing of his most desperate D-Day. When asked by one of his overeager troops at a town-hall coven, "When are you going to take the gloves off?" the candidate, according to the Washington Post, "grinned and replied, 'How about Tuesday night?'"

And while you were blathering the timing of the larger, imminent offensive, your advisers were blathering its tactical message: "We are looking for a very aggressive last 30 days," crooned one of them to the Post, which, as newspapers are wont to do, was taking notes, with the extraordinary idea of publication in mind. "We are looking forward to turning a page on this financial crisis," said, for lack of a better word, the adviser, "and getting back to discussing Mr. Obama's aggressively liberal record and how he will be too risky for Americans."

Naturally within minutes the Obama camp was broadcasting those words -- "turning a page on this financial crisis" -- back at the McCain camp, whose bluster and blather must surely have struck Obama advisers with serendipitous bemusement.

Rarely are counteroffensives preceded by counter-counteroffensives. But this one was, sucking all the umph out of its shocking suddenness.

Meanwhile, leaving no guesswork to the opposition, the McCain campaign also signaled the second component of its two-pronged offensive. "'We're going to get a little tougher,' a senior Republican operative said, indicating that a fresh batch of television ads is coming." And these ads, rather than turning pages on the collapsing economy -- something unemployed or imminently unemployed viewers everywhere are likely to forget, right? -- will turn a new page on simple indecency and dishonor: "We've got to question this guy's associations. Very soon," said the operative, meaning already in the can are grainy, slow-mo spots showing Obama's close relations to Tony Rezko and one-time radical William Ayres.

Now, we're all campaign strategists these days so it wasn't as though the details and timing of McCain's final offensive were much of a surprise. But why, in the name of what little suspense is left, would he and his advisers so boastfully reveal so much and so soon?

Could it be that even they doubt it will work, so what the hell, why not go ahead and posture and preen? After all, it's not like they have any constructive policy proposals to fill the dead air and newspaper interviews. No, they merely returned to the only real fundamental they know -- a return to the old GOP playbook of going distractingly dirty.

Although I continue to stand in awestruck admiration of these Rovian spawns' indefatigable chutzpah -- I love never-say-die fighters, even the dumb ones -- this time, I imagine, it just won't work. Or should I say, especially this time.

Simply put, this presidential race has finally turned into an anti-McCain contest. Once again, Obama has been most fortunate in his enemies. They just keep handing him victories. In McCain's case, just quickly review and consider merely a few of his confidence-sapping missteps, to put it kindly: his talk of strong economic fundamentals, followed by, within hours, his talk of a "crisis"; his insistence that he wouldn't debate in a crisis, no, he will debate in a crisis; his absolute refusal to condone pork, except when it's necessary.

There are many, many others, of course -- let's not even get started on the judgment issue of Sarah Palin's recruitment -- and ceremoniously ticking them off might make for a good drinking game, but a lousy basis for a presidential campaign.

At its core, however, the reason McCain's counteroffensive won't work is simply that the problem it's intended to hide -- a full-blown, honest-to-God economic crisis; he at least got that right -- is just too big.

Part and parcel of his coming spiel is much of that good-old, apocalyptic, Hooverian rhetoric about a tax-and-spend Democratic opponent, just when the electorate is poised to embrace a good-old, tax-and-spend Democratic president -- just when it's ready to welcome some classic pump-priming, regardless of deficit woes; just when government spending equates in the electoral mind with jobs and societal security and healthcare.

And the very last thing on the electorate's list of concerns is the microscopic matter of William Ayers, coming to television sets in battleground states everywhere, "very soon."

What a pathetically desperate way to drop victory right in Obama's lap.

Egad, people can be so self-centered

I am really concerned that too many people want Barack Obama to attack attack attack! That's for their personal pleasure, not for winning the election. No. Barack Obama should turn his eyes towards McCain, watch McCain turn his submissive eyes away, and say, "John, I still respect you." Meanwhile release truth-filled documentaries about John McCain, not to attack him, but to inform the American people. And do not hurry with the documentaries; sell no wine before its time. Oh, and Gwen Ifill is getting a lot of undeserved criticism.

Quit Making Light of Sexually Assaulting Men

A couple of months ago I criticized BuzzFlash editors for running a headline claiming that a female in the crowd had metaphorically crushed McCain’s testicles (except BuzzFlash used much cruder language). I asked them if they thought it would be funny to metaphorically reach inside Hillary and crush her ovaries. I think they got the message and to their credit they have not run another headline advocating or making light of male sexual assault. Now it is your turn to grow up. Using kicking someone in the testicles as a “cute” analogy is unacceptable because it actually shows your contempt for men and your actual misunderstanding of how egregious this action is. Please grow up and use language that is more appropriate. If a similar action done to a woman would not be funny, then grow up and realize it is also inappropriate to joke about doing it to men.

"What a Tangled Web We Weave..."

It's a little too late in the day for McCain to try and nail down his position on the state of the economy, since he doesn't seem to be able to remember what he said 10 minutes ago, and changes his mind seemingly with the direction of the winds.

McCain, Palin Fiddle While Economy Burns. . .

Hey, John McCain! Hey arah Palin! When are you two morons going to wake up and smell the coffee? IT'S THE ECONOMY, STUPID -- AGAIN!

"Turn the page on the

"Turn the page on the economy" is K-5 Loser McCain's plan? What is this McCain? McCain, how early in this race did you decide to take a dive, if indeed you were even nominated at the time your loser party made the decision to take a dive?

Never respond, just attack

One thing cognitive scientists and republican strategists have known for years but democrats rarely do is that it is a cardinal sin of politics to respond to an attack by explaining why it is unfair. Why? Because any verbal defense, no matter how logical and factual, only reinforces the original charge in the dark recesses of the mind. That's why it doesn't matter how controversial and unfair the upcoming GOP onslaught against Obama will be; the fact that these McCarthyistic charges will be DISCUSSED on every cable channel is a win for republicans. So how should the Obama campaign react to the charges? First, by staying on message, but secondly, every charge should be met with a countercharge; you say William Ayers, we say Keating Five; you say Reverend Wright, we say Alaska secessionism. And on and on, tit for tat. We democrats despise having to run a campaign this way but sometimes you've got to roll in the mud when you're trying to gig a pig.

"-- this time, I imagine, it just won't work."

Only if we have a real election won't it. All that has to "work" about McCain's tactic is for it to convince enough of the electorate that Obama is a danger to America, which would abet their overall strategy of holding on to the President's aggrandized executive power at all costs.

The SCOTUS set itself a light schedule this year, which could ease its legitimizing of whatever vote fraud or Bush order puts a Republican in the Oval Office again, and the military preparation for domestic unrest seems to hint at what GOPhascists expect "this time".

Do you honestly believe that our country is up to countering such a coup yet, PM?

OBAMA....STAY ON MESSAGE...ECONOMY, IRAQ, SOLUTIONS.... and-->

WE will take care of the MUD SLINGING... There are enough BLOGGERS to get the message out... copy and spam the KEATING 5 MESSAGE... LET YOUR MILLIONS OF SUPPORTERS TAKE ON PALIN AND THE MUD MACHINE called the Straight Talk Express We NEED you to stay on message!!!

NO NO NO!!!

Obama cannot afford to make the same mistakes that Kerry, Gore, and Dukakis made in thinking that he does not need to respond in kind to McSame's attack ads. Dukakis said exactly that on Rachel Maddow's show Friday night and he speaks from personal experience. The Obama campaign cannot afford to let one hundredth of a point of slip in the polls, he needs to win with as close to a landslide as possible. For one, a close race is much easier to steal (see the 2000 and 2004 elections). For another, you can bet your life that even if the race is a "landslide" for Obama, the second the majority of election results are in the Rethugs will be screaming "Voter fraud, we want a recount." Do you really think they're going to "go quietly into that dark night"? Hell no they won't. Their response will make the 2000 Florida vote count fiasco look like child's play. For yet another, the majority of sheeple in this country aren't invested enough to check on the lies and spin that the Rethugs offer in their slanderous campaign ads and are apt to accept them 'because they were on TV'.

In a "perfect world" campaigns would focus solely on the issues while maintaining respect for each other and a high degree of decorum throughout the campaign cycle. But as I'm sure as you well know this is NOT a "perfect world". I'm not saying Obama should stoop to the same level of lies, spin, personal slander, obsitfcation of facts, and all the rest of the tools in the Rovian playbook. Nor am I saying he should drop his message of Change (funny how the McSame campaign is now using "Change is coming" as a theme isn't it?) nor should he stop telling the American people what his plans are if elected. What I am saying is he cannot afford to take the position that he can ignore McSame's attack ads and just focus on the issues, and let the America public make up their collective minds on issues alone. Take a look at past history and that fact is painfully obvious. For every negative attack ad the Palin/McSame produces he should produce a minimum of three, one to expose the lies of the specific ad, another that goes on attack, and then another to promote his plans. Let Biden out of his cage and let's see some ads about Barbie Sarah's tax evasion, failure to respect the recent subpoenas in the Troopergate investigations, her affiliations with "The Third Wave" loonies, and all the rest of the fertile targets her nomination has provided as fodder. Obama's campaign needs to not only defend Obama by exposing the lies and deception coming from the other side, but also to go on the offensive as well. I'd even like to see a "public service" style ad that talks about true voter fraud (like what's been used in the past by the Rethugs) with the focus on telling people how to identify it and what to do to report it. Why not bring up the phone blocking issues and robo-calls from the past? This is a street fight and Obama needs to leave the gloves off and hit McSame with whatever he can get his hands on, given the information being factual and verifiable.

Also please realize that there are as many (if not possibly more) Rethuglican/anti-progressive bloggers out there as there are bloggers such as us. I can't say I agree with the "spam" thing, but I will say that when I get a load of Rethuglican crap in personal emails, I put together a debunking response and copy it to EVERYONE's address that appears in each and every iteration of the included forwards. I'm not talking about just hitting the "Reply All" button but actually going through the email and grabbing each and every email address that's listed in the body of the message. Oh and as a tip, I'd recommend creating an email account specifically for this purpose because you're sure to get flamed and that email address will end up on spam lists as well.

For me this election is more than just choosing our next president. It is a battle between good and evil, a battle for truth against lies, justice against repression, a battle for the true American Way that was envisioned by our Founding Fathers, a battle to save our great Constitution, and our once great Country. Obama and his campaign needs to fight tooth and nail, just as we need to as well. For the loss of this great battle will surely mean the death of our Republic.
