Every four years we suffer this joke -- the one about some presidential candidate's yet-announced choice of a running mate, which is, to abuse Churchill a bit, little more than an easily guessable riddle wrapped in a largely empty mystery inside a who-gives-a-crap enigma.
And every fours years the media treat these announcements and all their accompanying "suspense" as the Second Coming of a second something or other, events worthy of fevered speculation and total journalistic immersion.
But this time -- yesterday -- it was worth the wait, the hoopla, the overkill, and in retrospect the suspense was stunningly real and I loved the joke of the outcome. Because John McCain's running-mate decision was just about as un-guessably dumb as a running-mate decision can get.
To argue that it was colossally cynical is of course a waste of good argument, because what has the GOP in general done in 40 years or John McCain specifically in four months that wasn't cynical? It's what defines them.
So to observe that McCain's choice of a wholly unqualified, platitude-studded, beauty-queen bürgermeister was in part a naked grab for Hillary Clinton's supporters would be tantamount to boldly observing that meerkats are cute.
No, what really grabbed was the political stupidity behind the pick, since that is decidedly not one of Republicanism's more common characteristics. And its dumbness easily transcended the mere incongruity of dangling an anti-choice, mooseburger-munching, wabbit-hunting, ethically questionable far-right Christian conservative as an alternative for long-time and reasonably progressive Democratic women.
What it did confirm is something I speculated about nearly a month ago but seemed too politically stupid and almost unbelievable at the time to entertain at great length.
The issue at hand was McCain's accelerating pace of attack politics and negative advertising in contravention of everything honorable he had promised in this campaign. It appeared to be a deliberate attempt to alienate from Obama, rather than attract to McCain, the independent middle:
Has the McCain camp decided to depress the independent vote through a dispiriting onslaught of negativity, rather than seek that vote as a positive, pro-McCain force? The question's corollary is, then: Does McCain now believe he can rally enough of the conservative base to be competitive in the forced absence of a large independent turnout?
That, at least, would explain the otherwise inexplicable -- why McCain has persisted in catering to the hard right in an election we all expected to be determined by the soft middle. Such a shift in strategy would also reflect the thinking of McCain's recent hires from the old Rovian crowd, which always was, and probably still is, convinced of the numerical power of its traditional base.
It now appears that was precisely McCain's strategy, in the process of unfolding.
Wanting, I guess, to relive the thrill of his maverick days, to hear the oohs and aahs in response to the most unconventional of leadership, McCain convinced himself he could successfully refight the 2000 and 2004 presidential elections by going back to the conventional well -- the well, that is, of playing nearly exclusively to the conservative base. The non-ideological middle be damned.
The problem, of course -- a really, really big problem -- for McCain this time around is that the conservative base since 2004 has shrunk by about 10 points while the Democratic base has grown by an equivalent amount. As political affiliations and sentiments go, the numbers simply are not there for a conservative presidential candidate to successfully run a conservative campaign -- especially in the catastrophic wake of the ultraconservative George W. Bush.
Clearly, however, McCain & Co. believes it can pull it off. It believes it can, through the execution of the nastiest, most negative campaigning ever, suppress the independent vote and sufficiently reacquire its traditional base through heavy-duty pandering by Sarah Palin.
But also nearly beyond argument is the one that would say, It won't work -- because the critical second factor in the equation above is the one that never works. Which is to say, voters don't vote for vice-presidential candidates. They vote for the top of the ticket. And in 2008, they -- the ones McCain is aiming for with Palin -- don’t particularly like the guy at the top of the ticket and more than a few are still likely to just stay home.
Palin's selection was a bizarre calculus by the McCain campaign. What we're hearing, and what we'll continue to hear from many quarters, is that it was, oh let's just say, "risky." In fact, it was stupid.

PM, the Dems are always fighting the previous election...
I remember well, in January of 1993, _wondering_ if Bush Sr. would hand over power to the Democratic electee who ousted him from office, and I know I wasn't the only one harboring doubts that January. But Bush Sr. took a deep breath (after pardoning all his minions) and stepped back from the reins of power.
This is 2008, and Cheney-Rove have stolen TWO presidential elections in a row, and have so completely cowed and corrupted the DC Democrats, that Nancy Pelosi pretends not to notice that KARL ROVE is IGNORING a congressional subpoena.
Let me repeat that (and pardon the shouting), NANCY PELOSI _PRETENDS_ NOT TO NOTICE that Karl Rove is IGNORING a Congressional SUBPOENA, if any of us tried that, we would be facing a visit from US marshalls in a New York minute.
As a result, Karl Rove is free to GO TO GEORGIA to STOKE UP A WAR there - followed or preceded by Georgia lobbyist and McCain advisor Randy Scheuneman, Condi Rice, and Cheney himself.
Cheney has been controlling BILLIONS of dollars of "BLACK" (off-the-books) funding from CIA and DOD coffers for eight years now, and the DC Democrats tremble in fear and can only say "YES, SIR!" when Cheney stirs up some new mishief.
With two full months before the election, and two full months after the election, Cheney and Rove have a HUGE blank canvas to provoke, instigate, or start a few more wars, and enact a Pinochet coup right here in America.
It's not like Reid, Pelosi, Hoyer, Rockefeller & co. would try to stand up for the constitution or anything... they haven't up to now, they are practically CHEERLEADERS for Rove & Cheney.
Governor Palin
Am I nuts?
"I've taken on the oil industry"
other reasons for Palin pick:
2. Gives them a plausible excuse to claim they won the vote in November even when they lose in pre-election polls and exit polls. They can claim that like the "reluctant republicans" who wouldn't answer pollsters questions in 2004, PUMAs who voted for McCain and his female VP would be even more reluctant to tell pollsters they crossed parties lines. The fact few Democrats will actually cross party lines for something so silly is immaterial.

Debates
Sarah Palin has much more executive experience than her running mate.
I agree that the VP debate will not be a slam dunk, but I don't think Biden has to hold back. If the GOP tries to paint him as condescending, he can reply, "You think Vladimir Putin is going to bring flowers and candy?" Whining is not a Presidential trait. Bring your brass knuckles, Joe.
Hillary tried to cop an "Iron Lady" posture, and it didn't work. I don't think "Miss Congeniality" will give voters a Commander-in-Chief vibe.
Anyway, this is probably McCain's high point, and Obama has the potential to gain continuously till the election, as he becomes better known and understood. The fear-smear campaign will lose potency, and people are already sick of McCain's war stories ("Yeah, John, we've heard that a hundred times, already!")
This wasn't a dumb move, though. Just like "Tire Guages" distracted attention from the breadth of Obama's energy policy, people are talking more about Palin than Obama at Invesco.

Dumb as it may seem
Let us NOT underestimate this move. There is something there that I can't put my finger on just yet, but it is scary and ominous. Remember, folks: repiglicans don’t do things like that without a good reason. McCain is senile, and there are brains behind his back working overtime to screw the sheeple out of yet another chance to survive.
Palin may seem a dumb choice, but let’s prepare with all we have for the other shoe to drop. We’ve seen nothing yet. Be alert, be ready, be prepared.

Fascinating fact; More
Fascinating fact; More people watched Obama's acceptance speech than watched the opening ceremonies of the Olympics, the Oscar's or, and sit down for this one, the grande finale of American Idol.
Around 40 million viewers.
Hokey smoke Bullwinkle! People are paying attention!
You know what that means? People are going to watch Biden pick little pieces of Palin out of his teeth as he walks off the stage of the debates. (They probably have her listening to tapes in her sleep to catch up on what she doesn't know, which is just about everything of consequence.)
Just as they're going to watch Obama turn "I've gone to crazy-land" McCain into a foaming hemorrhage of unchecked fury. (Hmmm. They probably have him listening to tapes in his sleep also. Things like how many houses he owns, the difference between Shia and Sunni, what economics means, etc.)
The repubs are really going to have to dirty up the voting machine software this time around. No stealing by a sliver this time, methinks. They're heading for a train wreck that will feel so, so cathartic.
Her real constituency
Please do not forget that half the electorate's general knowledge and ability to think clearly is below average, which is not very high, and it will offend them to see one of their own bashed.
Our cerebral candidates biggest problem could be they are just too smart, and the Republicans again might win by offering up clear alternatives to that whom the muddled majority would rather embrace.
quousque, if intelligence is
quousque, if intelligence is really in such sad repute, and lord knows the Bushies have done everything in and out of reason to make it so, than all that's left is to liquidate your assets and apply for citizenship elsewhere.
However, as slow on the uptake as America tends to be (you know, as in opening the chute after the sudden stop), some stuff has filtered in the American mind.
Here's a promising anecdote: My wife and I teach in a working class, small former mill town in upstate NY. I mean, this is really where the chickens voted for Colonel Sanders the past two election cycles.
After 9/11, our middle school students came to school blathering mom and dad's knee jerk, kill 'em all "patriotism." That's slowly changed. Too many have relatives, fathers, mothers, neighbors, in the military. Extended tours. Stop-loss.
They're really sick of it. They know they've been dealt from the bottom of the deck.
That town is going to vote Dem in November.
Yes...Stupid!
