Obama is Finally Learning How to Play the Bloody Game

THE FIFTH COLUMNIST by P.M. Carpenter

Ah shucks, no announcement yet on Barack Obama's veep choice? I am positively … underwhelmed.

I don't mean to imply that I'm apathetic about who Obama's choice (Joe Biden) might be. Naturally it's an important decision for the Democratic candidate, and of course the suspense (Joe Biden) is killing me.

But the real veepstakes drama is being played out on the GOP side: It is there that John McCain is rumored to be pondering an actual, honest-to-God, I-kid-you-not game-changer, perhaps with pro-choicer Tom Ridge, or even an 1864like fusion ticket with 'Democrat' Joe Lieberman. Should McCain choose one of them, then finally I would be, well … whelmed.

Until such time, however, what's capturing my interest is the apparent, strategic metamorphosis of Sen. Obama. It appears he thought long and hard during his Hawaii vacation about far more than a running mate. He concentrated, instead, on presidential elections past and their creeping similarity to today. He then wisely came to the conclusion that, against Republicans, the 'new politics' of gentility is tantamount to suicide.

Excellent, as Montgomery Burns would say.

I have no doubt that Obama suspected it would, in time, come to this, and I can guarantee you that his worldly advisers knew it all along, and with absolute certainty. They knew, that is, that the GOP has only one playbook, and in it there is only one play under the only alphabetical entry of "A": attack, attack, attack.

The Obama camp knew it was coming, you and I knew it was coming, for that matter everyone on this bloody planet knew it was coming, but Obama & Co. had hoped to forestall the inevitable counterattack-offensive until the general election's formal initiation. Well, to hell with the best laid plans, as Mr. Burns might also say.

Sunday, on the immediate heels of Saddleback's staged warmth and Obama's abysmal showing, the Democratic nominee started swinging, or at least jabbing: "McCain says 'Here's my plan, I'm going to drill here, drill now which is something he only came up with two months ago when he started looking at polling."

Even better, he fingered McCain's hitmen staffers as "the same old folks that brought you George W. Bush. The same team. They say this other guy is unpatriotic, or this guy likes French people…. They try to make it out like Democrats aren't tough enough, aren't macho enough. It's the same strategy."

Then, on Monday, Obama began intimating openly -- but only half-jokingly -- that the gloves are coming off. "Everywhere I go, people have told me, 'I'm getting nervous. The Republicans, they're so mean. They're going to Swift-boat you. They're doing things to you. What are you going to do?' I have to just remind people that it is true that, just as John McCain has embraced George Bush's policies, he's embraced his politics."

Then yesterday, before the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Obama then drew a chalk line, a fair-warning boundary for McCain announcing that further assaults on his "character and patriotism" will soon encounter a less kind, less gentle response: "I have never suggested and never will that Senator McCain picks his positions on national security based on politics or personal ambition. I have not suggested it because I believe that he genuinely wants to serve America’s national interest. Now, it’s time for him to acknowledge that I want to do the same."

And now, this morning, the New York Times reports (a tad belatedly, I might add), that "Senator Barack Obama has started a sustained and hard-hitting advertising campaign against Senator John McCain in states that will be vital this fall; … negative spots [that] reflect the sharper tone Mr. Obama has struck in recent days … and seem to address the anxiety among some Democrats that Mr. Obama has not answered a volley of attacks by Mr. McCain with enough force."

There's still a less than desirable element of asymmetrical warfare between Obama and McCain. The former is yet feeling his way into what for him is alien and unwanted territory: the old gangland-murder politics of "You hit us, so we hit you back." The latter, however, is all too empirically familiar with the value of a disorienting first strike, however gratuitously preemptive it might be.

The point here, though, is that Obama seems to be learning, and accepting, that he's no longer in school. American politics, he is finally gathering, hasn't ever and never will play out in a law-classroom setting of Socratic dialogue and enlightenment.

It is, rather, a blood sport -- a depraved, gladiatorial contest of sound-bite stabs and visceral, 30-second shallowness. It is, simply, what 'the people' want, and pay for -- double entendre intended.

Let's Get Down and Dirty

Okay-----it is time for Obama to change his mind about the 527s and get a few attacks going on McCain's personal life: most particularly, his past womanizing, excessive drinking, frequent unjustified angry outbursts at his staff, lack of involvement with his children, horrendous betrayal of his first wife, psychological cruelty to his second wife, his mother's suing of his first wife AFTER John divorced her--in order to get back a few "personal things." Shall I go on? There is lots of gold to mine here! John McCain is not a nice man; he suffers not only from PTSD and possibly early cognitive dysfunction, but also from a severe "little man complex"--he is short (5'7"). Off with the gloves, Barack!!!!

"He is learning?" ....

" how to play the bloody game?" Are you serious, PM? Obama takes a few jabs at McCain by:

- mildly criticizing McCain's poll-driven offshore drilling reversal,

- weakly rebuking anonymous and unnamed staffers,

- attempting to tie McCain to Bush's unpopular policies (a fairly obvious/honest strategy that will hopefully prove effective but is hardly "taking off the gloves"), and

- acknowledging McCain's "honorable intentions" with respect to his national security positions, and then requesting reciprocity from McCain

All of these may (arguably) be good ideas, but you call this evidence that he's accepted the need to engage in "political bloodsport"? Geeezus ......... If he expects to win this thing, Obama's (or his surrogates/VP are) going to have to hit a lot harder than this.

Bringing a gun to a knife fight? Please .......

So far it looks more like a spork.

The Lack of Outrage

A few weeks ago when Obama was overseas, McCain begin testing his disgusting trope-- "Obama had rather lose a war in order to win a campaign." Obama's response? "It's disappointing." Disappointing? Really? The man just basically called you a traitor. I can think of a lot of words to describle McCain's charge, but "disappointing" is not one of them. This week, McCain repeated the charge in front of veterans. I told myself then, if Obama does not forcefully answer this charge (meme) immediately, he is going to critically damage his candidacy. McCain has in effect--called him out...challenged his manhood...called him a traitorous pussy. Americans simply cannot and will not embrace a Benedict Mr. Peepers for president. I'm a southern male--as liberal as you can be considering that--and McCain's charge literally makes my blood boil. Them's fightin' words comin' out of the old man's mouth. But Obama isn't just losing southern males by remaining silent, he's losing northern males, women, young people, everyone. He's hemorrhaging voters from every spectrum the longer he let's McCain's scurrilous charge go unchallenged. At some point it could reach a tipping point where people just decide he's not tough enough to be president. But thankfully, yesterday, Obama finally stood up and defended himself. But did he go far enough? I would have preferred that he mention McCain by name in his stern defense--and not issue some abstract warning against amorphous "people" who question his patriotism. But hey, it's a start. Now lock N' Load, Barak. These people aren't bringing knives to this fight. Good post, P.M.

There's "Negative" and Then There's McCain "Dirty"

I'm fine w/Obama hitting McCain on the issues, b/c he should have been doing that all along. But I know a lot of people here have suggested he go negative on McCain personally, like the Rove "proteges" have done to Obama by having McCain question his patriotism - and I think THAT is a huge mistake and likely to backfire on Obama.

If Obama can use the isssue attack to paint McCain as an out-of-touch, short-tempered hypocritical bully (which he inherently is by virtue of being a Republican!), he can win this thing decisively - if he goes personal like McCain's gone personal, he loses because it becomes Young Black Man Beats Up Old White War Hero. It's a lie, of course - but it's also the secret fear of White Ammurika that Obama has been, so far, expert at threading his way past....

Sad State of Politics

It is sad that we must decide our leader based on the candidate who can spin the worst image of his opponent. McCain said he would run a clean, honorable campaign until he realized he was behind Obama. He then turned dirty, hiring Bush smearhead Steve Schmidt to run a negative attack campaign. Obama who was above the fray, even complimenting McCain, had no choice but to fight back. Will you make your decision on who offers the worst picture of the opponent or who offers the best qualities for the position of POTUS? Neither candidate has experience behind the desk in the Oval Office in the White House. Good judgement is the most important quality for POTUS. Having opposing parties in the White House and Congress will result in more gridlock like we have seen in the past two years. The quality of being able to spread dirt on someone is not a good criteria to decide the choice for POTUS. We have become a two-class society--the rich and the rest. McCain and Republicans will keep it that way. Obama and Dems offer hope to change that and return to PreBush conditions.

Bringing the gun to the knife fight

He said long time ago -- (Barack Obama did) that's what he would do. I think he wanted to be positive that this would be the Republican campaign tactic. Now, he knows for sure that it is. Now, it's time to fight back. After the love-fest in Denver, I suspect a more aggressive campaign. But, I still think that Obama will be able to claim the high road. He may sling some mud here and there. I don't think he's gonna wallow in the ditch, with the Republicans. The losers in this: The American Voters. Who deserve to have their concerns addressed, and to know the candidates positions on "Issues that Matter." The ultimate loser is always the American Voter.

Say McCain as president means WWIII

It is time to not only take the gloves off, but to get down in the gutter where presidential election contests are won. The Obama people need to stress the theme that McCain is dangerous and could very well cause WWIII, killing virtually all Americans and most humans in the process. McCain's "toughness" with the Russians, is actually foolhardy and borders on the insane. Even Republican Senator Thad Cochran of Mississippi has said that McCain is too hot-tempered to be president. Stop messing around, and start scaring the people with the prospect of nuclear annihilation if McCain is elected. Actually, it is not even exaggeration. It is a true concern.

Wanna poke the bear, well...

Don't do it yourself, get a 'friend' to do it...

A 'friend' like say Georgia. As I understand it, and not from ANYTHING I've heard on the MSM, Georgia started this conflict by attacking Russian peace keepers in the disputed territory killing 15 of them without warning in the middle of the night, along with 1500 or so civilians. Now one just might wonder why a small country of less than 4 million people would decided to 'poke at the bear'. I'm SURE it had NOTHING to do with ANY Neocon plan... The fact that McSame's foreign policy 'adviser', who received upwards to $800,000.00 in lobbying fees SURELY had NOTHING to do with providing the impression that the U.S. would support them in their ridiculous attempt to attack Russian held territory. (said with thick sarcasm in case you missed that).

Once again the American people are being fed a wonderfully salacious bag of crap. And here all along I thought sheep ate grass... Hey after all the majority of Americans are totally fed up with the Iraq occupation, and are burned out on "The Terrorist Threat" propaganda. Time for something fresh and new to generate fear, and what better than that specter of evil Russia, reincarnated from the cold war? And if Obama or the Democrats even dare to bring up the realities of the situation, jump on them with the standard "Worthless and weak anti-American" line...

Same old same old from McSame and his Neocon puppet masters... My fear is not based on the response from the bear, but is based on the actions of the manipulative Neocons. And given the recent jump in Zogby polling it's working!!!

Baa Baa black sheep have you any morals?

Russia's Revival

Russia got new life when the price of oil rose. Their coffers are now abundant. They can now act with more confidence in world affairs. The US is stretched militarily and weakened economically. The bear has awakened from hibernation thanks to rising oil prices and the US misadventures in Iraq. It is not wise to play dangerous games with the Bear, Mr. Bush and Mr. McCain.
