Obama's American Century

THE FIFTH COLUMNIST by P.M. Carpenter

For more than a week the rabid chihuahuas of the fourth estate have had their monomaniacal fangs sunk into Barack Obama's trouser cuffs, ripping remorselessly at what they think is a bloody vulnerability: "Come now, Senator, why not your confess your venial sins regarding the holy 'surge'?"

It's been quite the media spectacle, but their obsession must be satisfied -- even when the actual question has been satisfied repeatedly. Yesterday, on the national stage of 'Meet the Press' (transcript), we saw that things hadn't changed much. Said Tom Brokaw: "You opposed the surge.... Many analysts believe that the reason that violence has decreased is because the American troops were deployed in a more effective manner.... But you would not apologize, and you said you did not regret your opposition to this surge."

After this and other more oblique but like attempts to make him confess, Obama finally gave the answer that should have shamed the media into guilt-ridden silence long ago:

You know, if we want to look at the question of judgment which is the one that John McCain raised, John McCain's essential focus has been on the tactical issue of sending more troops, and he's, he's made his entire approach to foreign policy rest on that support of Bush's decision to send more troops in. But we can have a whole range of arguments about past decisions -- the decision to go into Iraq in the first place, and whether that was a good strategic decision, where we've spent a trillion dollars at least by the time this thing is over, lost thousands of lives in pursuit of goals John McCain supported that turned out to be false.

That was Obama's genteel way of telling the media that if they can't be balanced in the application of historical inquiries, then just shut the hell up.

What I haven't heard Obama hurl in response, however, is that the right in general and John McCain in particular have been mighty selective in their historical enthusiasms. You'll recall that when Iraq was in nearly comprehensive flames and debate here about what to do there next was swirling, the one question the right would not tolerate was the one regarding the invasion's wisdom to begin with.

Hey, that's history, the right would inveigh. And what the hell has yesterday got to do with today? We are where we are and the here, now and tomorrow are all that's important. We should look only to the future (precisely what Obama has encouraged). Yet now it's the right, poor dears, who are stuck in, and on, the past, which the media has failed to notice.

Nevertheless there were -- miracles do happen -- other questions asked and answered on 'MTP' yesterday. As I was listening, Obama's answer to one of them seemed not in the least profound -- neither in the way he delivered it or in the way I received it. After revisiting his response in transcript form, however, that changed. First, Brokaw's question:

"Here is some of the perception that you're working against based on the latest NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll about your qualifications to be a commander in chief.... There is this ... which is an important question that we asked our audience. 'Who's the riskier choice' to be the president with two wars and an economic meltdown going on at home? Senator McCain does much better in that poll than you do. Does that surprise you?"

No, it surprised Obama not, of course. But I'll let him speak for himself, at some length:

No, because ... the fact is is that our campaign has been based on the idea that we need to fundamentally change how we do business, both domestically and internationally; that we should have a different kind of foreign policy we are deploying all of America's power, not just our military, but also our diplomatic, economic, cultural, political power; that domestically, we've got to promote not just trickle-down economics, but bottom-up economic growth and reinvest in, for example, the clean energy sector. All those things -- anytime you're bringing about big change, there are some risks involved. But it's important, I think, to note that, in that poll, I'm also leading. And, and so what that indicates is that the American people are ready for change. But, as I've said before, this is a big leap for people. You know, I don't look like previous commanders in chief. I've been on the national scene a relatively short time.... But the fact that we are in the position we are in right now -- very competitive in this race -- indicates the degree to which people recognize we can't keep on doing the same things and somehow expect a different outcome.

I apologize for the extended quote -- yes, yes, I confess, Mr. Brokaw, it's often a cheesy way of the most unoriginal sort to fill up column space -- but contained within it was a rather unmistakable familiarity, one that simply didn't register with me upon simply hearing it.

Obama's exhortation, you see, isn't so much a call to arms for "change" as it is merely a sensible plea for return -- a blotting out, if you will, of the last eight execrable years under that apotheosis of unAmericanism, the Bush administration.

It's as much a backward-looking vision as it is forward; a resettling of that twentieth-century American territory of middle-class development and responsible multilateralism. It's TR, FDR and JFK rolled into one. Yet with all of Obama's emphasis on "change," more than a few American voters are missing that underlying continuity. Hence the relevant emphasis may be a strategic mistake.

True, after eight years of George W. Bush, traditional sanity may seem like radical change. In reality, however, it's but a step back into America's Century -- the one that most Americans were rather proud of.

AT it again

They are at it again using Rove(TURD BLOSSOM) and Bush talking points and no one is calling like it is they are LIERS and so is McCain, All of the CORPORATE CONTROLED MEDIA are in McCain and Bush Rove(TURD BLOSSOM) pocket. CNN, ABC,CBS, MSNBC, and of course FOX are doing the same thing to OBAMA that they did to AL GORE and JOHN KERRY just listen to all the talking heads and so-called NEWS REPORTERS. They are all in the bag for McCain. Excep a few like Keath, Rachel. and Jack Cafferty. The tims is now to call these people OUT.

Fear Is What Drives These Rabid Chihuahuas

"Fear of what?" "Irrelevancy." "Brought about by?" "Nobody being interested in what they have to say." "Why not?" "They'll be strictly past tense."

A Different Perspective

PM -- I agree with your comments about 9 times out of 10. Maybe even 9.5 times out of ten. And I agree with you about the bottom feeders aka MSM. BUT, in watching MTP yesterday here’s an impression I came away with. Having read Brokaw’s books and kind of growing up with him, I know that his personal philosophy is pretty progressive. He comes from a generation of professional news people who do not, however, broadcast their political leanings to the nation in the performance of their job. What I saw Brokaw doing in asking those idiotic questions that have been spewed by the McCain supporters and the MSM was to give Obama the space and lots of time to clearly respond to their idiocy. I mean come on – he gave Obama a full hour to go into great detail about his policies and beliefs. I really enjoyed listening to Obama expound at great length and came away from the show even more impressed with his vast amount of knowledge and understanding of foreign and domestic issues. I don’t believe Brokaw wanted Obama to confess to anything – just have the time to explain clearly why he has said what he has said. I liked it – you’re right there was nothing profound – just concise information about WHY the “surge” thing is NOT the fricken’ issue. No one can stop the inane questions that are being asked nor the pernicious lies that are being spread so having Obama use every platform he can to refute them and then move on to talk policy is great. I mean didn’t you hear the sarcasm in Brokaw’s question when quoting last week’s comments from David Brooks: “Obama has benefited form a week of good images. But substantively, optimism without reality isn't eloquence. It's just Disney." Why didn't you use that occasion to spell out in great detail a sweeping vision of the Obama doctrine?” You know Brokaw was laughing at the media and the press himself. Just another perspective. . . .

Sigh

This is the mindset that had Progressives cheering the New Yorker cover. The overwhelming majority of MTP viewers will believe that Brokaw's questions are legitimate. Maybe you and some other guy will see the questions as mockery, but that's about all. Satire, sarcasm and irony cannot be used by our side simply because most of America won't get it. Most people, and especially Republican voters, are ignorant and stupid. You can't think that they are like you.

I didn't get that....

I saw an aging news-reader - plugged in on a trial basis to a rare and coveted position - pushing the line that his employers have pushed on him and all of his colleagues. If Brokaw wanted to laugh, as you suggest, he should have blown coffee out of his nose after citing Krauthammer and Brooks as legitimate analysts.

Some Progressives...

...dissatisfied with a few of Obama's recent judgements have been foolish enough to compare our Presidential choices this year as being indistinguishable from choosing between a Ford or a Chevy. Now these folks really need to stop in their tracks and WAKE THE F-UP. The clear negative bias of the MSM, post-European tour, and their forgiveness of McMads daily mis-statements and foolishness demonstrates that Obama doesn't have an easy ride to the White House - and he needs all the support he can muster.

I've read estimates of up to 12% of the voter's who poll for Barack because they think he will be a better President will actually not vote for him. Polsters label these cretons as "Ballot Box Racists", just can't pull the lever for a black man. I don't doubt it. This means that Barack will need to blow the pants off McMad in November just to squeek out a victory. Heck, Barack could poll with a 10% margin (or a 20 point difference) and yet still loose!@ This is scary stuff and simply catching the scent of it should WAKE UP those voters on the far left who would rather whine than win!!

So, the Far Left Progressive's constant grumbling and childish discontent with Obama only bolsters the MSM and the GOP nutcases. In essence, they serve to flank the positions of the world of Rove, FoxNews, and Limbaugh in their effort to maintain their fascist hegemony. This of course simply means that they may be responsible for another 4 years if McMad succeeds!! Now that's an example cutting off your arm to cure a broken finger.

Hey Will!

The Far Left are Communists. You know any Communists on the national political scene? The political spectrum is : Communists Progressives Republicans.

Please, Don't be afraid...

...just because the lefty electorate is not goosestepping to the degree that is seen on the right. We progressives who have been criticizing Obama on the bases of his FISA vote, his Israel statements, etc. do so because we disagree with him. If you happened to disagree with some crucial policy promoted by your candidate wouldn't you want him or her to know it?

Yes..

...I do, and a balanced critique, as you point out, is what is necessary. I would add to your list criticisms a real caution on expanding our footprint in Afghanistan.

But it's the "flying off the handle" abandonment of Barack by some on the left that I cannot stomach, nor understand given the alternate option. This sentiment is hightened as it becomes clear that the MSM is merely a courtier to corporate interests, rather than acting as journalists. This is evidenced by their recently increased near-hostility to Barack, our only chance at displacing the Regime.

but what other power do we have?

Will my $200 political-contribution budget make the same splash as does the money weilded by Verizon? No - all we have are our voices and votes. I myself wrote to Obama's campaign and Senate office the evening of his FISA vote telling them that he had lost my support through his support of that proto-fascist legislation; which was entirely true at the time. I've also posted many vitriolic posts on blogs like this in this same regard. Will I end up voting for Obama? Almost certainly. Am I going to do so without trying to slap some sense into him? Not a chance.

Thats' fine big boy...

...But remember the first order of business is getting Barack elected, and that means working together as a movement to win. Cohesion is the basis of victory in team sports, and like it or not, we Progressive need to warm to that fact if we want to take back the reins of power. Now I know that many liberals were not really big into team sports growing up, unless band and debating clubs count. But the opposition Conservatives figured out the magnifying power of cohesion and thereby reaped more votes since 1994 than their non-populist policies should render.

So I suggest you hold your thunder till after November, then you can slap away... if we are lucky enough to beat the Fascist Republicans.

Remember we will be toast if McMad wins.

"big boy"?

We will be toast if the fairy tales that currently pass for "conventional wisdom" persist much longer in our public policy decision-making; and any progressive candidate who decides that the way to win is to embrace these false narratives is only pushing us toward the toaster.

It all depends on your definition of "success"

Today 60 people were killed, and over 300 injured by suicide bombers in Iraq. This is what McCain calls "success." The only thing the surge succeeded at was pumping hundreds of billions more of your future tax dollars into the bank accounts of the war profiteers.

What a Joke

We won't know whether or not the "surge" worked until we stop paying Sunni "insurgents" not to shoot at American troops anymore.

$300 a month in tax payer dollars times thousands and thousands of guys with AK-47s.

Christ.

The Ethnic Cleansing has been a success!

Over a million people dead; over five million refugees (this figure is a year old - I wonder where this number stands now?) and finally after five years the violence goes down. Hey; it must be those extra troops we sent in, right? Wrong. The brutal bigots we liberated in Iraq have simply run out of overt enemies to murder or drive from their homes. Has no one done a study regarding the ethnic constituency of cities, neighborhoods, and regions that once were the hotspots of internecene violence? This might provide a useful set of data with which to counter the corporate media as they trumpet the success of our victorious legions.

Looking Back

I re-viewed Obama's speech at the 2004 DNC convention yesterday, and it was amazing to me how much he had revealed at that time about his foreign policy and domestic policy goals. The man has been consistent, and it must be rather amusing to him to constantly have to remind the Tom Brokaws and Katie Courics of the world that he really meant what he said, 4 years ago, 2 years ago, last week. The other silly bit of talking points floating around, thanks to Krautheimer and the RNC (speak ROVE) is that Obama is "just like George W Bush." Krautheimer has pulled in the Hitler analogy with the crowds of Germans cheering for him last week, while the majority of the pundits are talking about how "stubborn and arrogant" Obama is, JUST LIKE BUSH. What a farce. What a circus.
