Watch Out: The Mad Woman From Minnesota, Michele Bachmann, is Back

BE ELECTED
by Meg White

Sarah Palin may not be in the White House, but don't rejoice too quickly. Minnesota's Sixth Congressional District has their own mini-Palin: Michele "Mad Woman" Bachmann, and most Americans may be shocked to find out that she's just been elected to her second term in Congress by two percentage points.

Bachmann is a crazy born-again who's even more fun to watch than Palin. She's got the hair, the wonderful Fargo-esque accent and penchant for abuse of power. But Bachmann's filter is nearly non-existent, allowing her to accuse our next president of being an anti-American, leftist terrorist. Sound familiar?

On Chris Matthews' Hardball, she not only calls Obama anti-American, but she also  insinuates that all liberals are "leftist, Anti-Americans." Furthermore, she wishes members of Congress would be investigated by the media to determine their anti-American views.

If you haven't already, watch the video here. Notice how Bachmann's eyes flare open wide every time Matthews asks her a question, like she's trying to burn a hole in the camera lens. Freaky, huh?

The video got a lot of play and discussion in the days before the election, prompting the RNC to pull ad support, huge amounts of money donated to her Democratic rival, Elwyn Tinklenberg, an apology ad from Bachmann, and a petition to have her censured.

Some even weirder, and less watched, video popped up of Bachmann speaking to her mega-church, Living Word Christian Center. She said God is calling us to wage war on radical Islam:

"How will our nation deal with this threat of radical Islam? There's so much at stake, but we listen to the Lord and we decide we're going to suit up, we're going to sign up, we're going to be hot for God, and we're going to do what He is calling us to do!"

Hmm... that has a familiar ring to it too.

But that's not all. On a personal level, God apparently called Bachmann to marry someone she didn't really like at all, as well as to run for Congress.

Also like Palin, Bachmann thinks global warming is "voodoo, nonsense, hokum, a hoax."

Bachmann also said that people like to work two jobs, going so far as to invent a new word to assert this (workingest does sound kind of like nuke-you-ler).

She calls herself a "Joe the Plumber," though she has a house worth more than $1 million. How does she justify this statement? Well, she and her husband own a "small business," Bachmann & Associates.

Michele's husband, Marcus Bachmann, is the president of the company, which is a Christian therapy center. Marcus is a "therapist" with a doctorate in psychology from an online college, and it is unclear whether or not he's licensed. On his bio, he says "Christ is the Almighty Counselor," and there are indications that the organization uses the Christian therapy to "un-gay" homosexual clients. That would certainly fit with Michele's anti-gay stance.

After her infamous diatribe against Obama on MSNBC, Bachmann flip-flopped on and off the electoral bandwagon. In an interview with Politico, she told them she's "extremely grateful" for Obama's win, insisting that there is neither such a thing as racism in her district, nor is race a motivating factor for McCain supporters.

However, her ideas of where the subprime debacle came from hint that Bachmann might not be all that innocent when it comes to stirring racial tension.

She sounded totally different when talking about the election on conservative radio, however. She went on the Mark Levin Show this week, or should I say went off?

Bachmann compared Obama's pick of Rep. Rahm Emanuel as chief of staff to organized crime, saying The Sopranos are in the White House. She also made it clear she won‘t be working with the new administration, calling it "day one of the assault of socialism."

And this comes less than a month after she told The Associated Press a bizarre tale about what she would do if Obama came to her district. From the Minnesota Independent:

In 2007, video of Bachmann lingering on President Bush's shoulder and giving him a kiss during the State of the Union Speech made waves in Minnesota media. Bachmann is done kissing Bush it seems, but she's not done kissing presidents.

"If the presidency would somehow go to Barack Obama, I would welcome him to the 6th District as well," Bachmann said to reporters after the debate. "As a matter of fact, I would put my hand on his shoulder and give him a kiss if he wanted to."

This lady is clearly a little off. But remember, Minnesotans have had two years to watch her act on the national stage. How does a woman such as this get re-elected in the longest-running blue state in the nation, one that went 54 percent for Obama?

First, it's important to remember that there was a significant dent in the liberal base by a third-party candidate. Third parties are relatively common in the state that brought us Gov. Jesse Ventura. In addition, Minnesota voters are known to split their tickets at the ballot box, accounting for some more of that differentiation.

Second, as one reader of ours wrote in, you have to look at the advertising:

"Millions of voters outside the ultra-conservative Sixth District were never exposed to an onslaught of cleverly contrived television ads featuring 'Mommy Michele' hugging the kiddies, or others portraying Bachmann as a kind of modern-day Joan of Arc, the God-fearing champion of downtrodden taxpayers... All Bachmann and her handlers had to do was keep their expensive, well-oiled propaganda machine running at full speed until election day. By the time Tinklenberg could finally afford to start broadcasting his campaign messages, they were drowned out by a flurry of vicious, misleading attack ads -- approved, of course, by a woman who admits she 'adores' Ann Coulter."

As a born-and-raised Minnesotan, I have to say Bachmann's re-election stings on a personal level. While I never lived in her district or anyplace that could be described as rural Minnesota, there are elements of the big city (or mini apple?) in her support base. Take for instance my favorite hack publication, the Star Tribune. As the biggest newspaper in the Twin Cities, it has a lot of power, which was willfully misused on supporting Bachmann's campaign. Just after her re-election, the Strib praised Bachmann's "tough talk." Apparently, being tough includes lying invective. And don't get me started on Sen. Norm Coleman's coattails.

Another part of the equation is cultural geography. The Sixth Congressional District is comprised of both suburbs and rural areas, hugging the top of the Twin Cities' inner ring suburbs. In some ways, the sprawl that surrounds the Twin Cities metro area is more conservative than the truly rural areas.

The Iron Range, which brought us the late, great liberal Sen. Paul Wellstone, is more rugged and individualistic. Those people aren't interested in what happens in other people's bedrooms. There's a strong element of populism to the fictional town of Lake Wobegon, and residents can smell a fake coming from miles away. Grandstanding and preaching don't play well there, making it harder for a religious nut job to get elected in those areas.

The strip malls and mini-mansions of Woodbury and the like are different. Evangelizing can play well out there. Plus, the new subdivisions popping up all over attract more conservative neighbors from economically flagging states such as the Dakotas.

Some say the 2010 Census could eliminate Bachmann's district altogether. Bachmann is said to be considering a senatorial or gubernatorial run. Much like Palin's promise to run for president in 2012, I think this threat is emptier than either of them can possibly comprehend just yet.

BE ELECTED

WHEN STUPIDITY IS JUST TOO INDELIBLE TO ERASE...

I've known Michele for over 15yrs. personally & politically. Without a doubt she is the most WILLFULLY IGNORANT (Doesn't see the Stop Sign and runs it) & IRRATIONALLY STUPID (Sees the Stop Sign AND Runs It ON PURPOSE!). There is almost NO CONNECTION between her brain - small as it is - and her MOUTH (incredibly BIG!). Rarely if ever does she THINK before she SPEAKS but LOVES THE LIMELIGHT & the MIKE! But alas, the poor, empty-headed woman couldn't analyze an issue ON ANY TOPIC, Rationally & Constructively. As a resident of her district, I'D HAVE VOTED FOR SNEEZY, GRUMPY OR SLEEPY! Unfortunately, only DOPEY was on the GOP line. Were she not so headstrong and certain she's right when she OFTEN ISN'T, PERHAPS one could WORK with her, help her enhance her Logic & Reason. However, she's apparently committed to a lifetime of WILLFUL STUPIDITY, RACISM & NARROWMINDEDNESS. When she's old & grey before Alzheimer's kicks in, perhaps she'll have a few moments of clarity and honesty that will drive her to apologize to the many folks she'd annoyed and INSULTED!

The Eyes Have It.

Look in her eyes. She is certifiably INSANE! What the hell is wrong with Minnesota's voters?

Bachman, turncoat, overdrive

If bachman is a mandate of god, god must be a stupid bigot...

Michelle Bachman's re-election is proof of media WHITEWASH

Michelle Bachman's re-election is proof of the MEDIA WHITEWASH she gets from Minnesota papers and TV....

Which Minnesota papers and local TV, like the "mainstream media" nationwide, tend to DOWNPLAY Righty actrocious comments, while AMPLIFYING minor Democratic faux pas into MAJOR NATIONAL SCANDALS.

For example, even as the major media nationwide was bleating the McCain campaign's refrain of "BILL AYERS IS A TERRORIST!" and "Obama's close spiritual advisor REV. WRIGHT _HATES AMERICA!"_ - the SAME damn media was GIVING SARAH PALIN's HUSBAND, Todd Palin, a FREE PASS for his prior membership in the ALASKA SECESSIONIST PARTY, whose founder said, and I quote - "I HATE THE AMERICAN FLAG, and EVERYTHING IT STANDS FOR" !!
http://tpmelectioncentral.talkingpointsmemo.com/2008/09/aip_founder_professed_hatred_f.php

Even as the corporate media were relentlessly HYPING and BROADCASTING the story "BILL AYERS WAS A TERRORIST!" (who never actually killed anyone), the Righty-dominated "major media" were IGNORING, BURYING the stories, not just of ERIC RUDOLPH _BOMBING_ the OLYMPIC PARK during Atlanta's hosting of the 1996 Olympics, but the TWO MURDERS _THIS YEAR_ by DEMENTED RIGHT-WING GUNMEN stomping in to Arkansas Dem. Party Chairman Bill Gwatney's office and shooting him to death,
http://www.cnn.com/2008/CRIME/08/13/arkansas.shooting/index.html
and, EVEN MORE REPREHENSIBLE, a Tennessee gunman WALKING INTO A Knoxvill CHURCH ON SUNDAY in an attempt to KILL EVERYONE THERE (while children were putting on a play, no less), but he was fortunately stopped after shooting & killing two and wounding 7 others.
http://www.cnn.com/2008/CRIME/07/27/church.shooting/index.html

UNTIL the DEMOCRATIC PARTY & leaders _DEMAND_ RESPONSIBLE MEDIA COVERAGE of such RIGHT-WING INSTIGATED MURDERS, we will NOT have "EQUAL PROTECTION UNDER LAW" in America... and that includes the Minnesota media GIVING MICHELLE BACHMAN a WHITEWASH for her clearly INCITEFUL, "dehumanize those 'other' Americans" views and agenda.

PS: I loved to listen to the AL FRANKEN radio show, but I heard several of his interviews before the election, and Al would veer off in to FAMILY STORIES or anecdotes at the drop of a hat. Unlike Obama spokes-gals Jan Sharkowsky and Clair McCaskill.... who HIT THEIR TALKING POINTS SWIFTLY, forcefully, and with conviction, even as they retain a sense of humor and human connection.

I knew then - because Al was NOT HITTING THE TALKING POINTS about why incumbent Senator Norm Coleman DESERVED TO BE RETIRED by Minn. voters - that Al's election would have a rough go of it, and, sad to say, I've been proved correct.

I lived in St. Cloud, MN

I lived in St. Cloud, MN (6th Cong. district) for five years and in MN for more than 20. If Rep. Bachmann thinks there is no racism in St. Cloud and the surrounding ultra-conservative small towns, she is either totally clueless (read: ignorant of her constituency, or just ignorant) or lying. You know, Rep. Bachmann's statement is about how it's great an African American won (which is the epitome of racism); not about change, not about how America is sending a signal about changing the damaging policies she embraces, and nothing about her Orwellian call for checking the patriotism of the American Congress. How do these people get away with spewing lie after lie after lie, and then are not held accountable afterwards? They just seem to either crawl back under the rock they came out from under, or continue to exist without the slightest recriminations. Liberals and progressives seem to be the types of people who are willing to let bygones be bygones and forget this hateful, vile rhetoric that filled the airwaves prior to the election. These people must have their feet held to the fire by the populace and the media. I'm not a vengeful person but if I mess up, I usually have to pay for my mistakes. These people must be ostracized and held accountable for their lies and half-truths. Have you seen the whacko-Right web sites out there and what they're saying today after the election? There is no honeymoon. They're planning the same attacks that they hit Bill and Hillary Clinton with during the Clinton years - unrelenting attacks. We must stop or minimize this somehow, or God help us if we don't.

In defence of the minority...

I can't believe I'm posting in defence of thugs, not Michelle mind you, but the party as a whole. I listened to a great interview on NPR with Mitch McConnell (minority leader, mind you) in which he conceded his party's loses saying that the rethuglicans need to put their country before their party, and vote with the democrats as much as possible because the people have spoken and clearly want to move in a more progressive direction. Although he's probably lying through his teeth, my point is that Bachmann is on the fringe and don't let her represent the entire party in your eyes. It's like saying all dems are as liberal as kucinich (we wish, right?!?)or as moderate blue dog as Pelosi.

Minneapolis/St Paul is surrounded by Republicans

Much of "Greater Minnesota" outside the Iron Range is Republican but the Metro seems to be surrounded by some of the worst of them. Maybe the nearness of the urban especially scares them into knee-jerk paroxysms of fear. Bachmann also represents the prison industry on the east side of her district and a college that periodically sees swastikas spray painted on its buildings on the west side. I can speculate on historical background since my mother's side is from pioneer stock deep in the heart of Bachmann territory. Unlike the stereotyped German or Scandinavian demographic of most of Minnesota, Bachmann's area was settled very early by New England lumbermen so it has sort of an inbred Lovecraftian "old white trash" suburban quality instead of the "nouveau-suburbanite" Swedish-American grandchildren leaving the farm for the far metro exurbs that make up other districts surrounding the metro. Maybe its my preferential gaze but whenever the news carries a story about a mummified fetus in a storage locker or somebody trying to run a 14-foot truck under a 12 foot bridge, my mind will guess "Bachmann territory" before I hear the facts. Seems like I'm usually right.

Redistricting

The weirdly shaped district Bachmann represents certainly looks like a gerrymander.
Does anyone from Minnesota know the history of it?
Maybe redistricting after 2010 will do away with it.

It certainly makes sense to keep an eye on her and not let her ravings fly under the
radar. She'll be up for reelection in 2 years and we can hope that more sensible
Minnesotans will target her for retirement. Otherwise, she's not of much consequence.

Another artificial fruitcake

So in her twisted mind, if you aren’t a rabid whacko religious zealot nutcase, you aren’t American? Here is one old Veteran who disagrees with the Minnesota Mad Woman’s definition of what makes one an American. I’m proud to call myself an American Atheist, so she could put that in her pipe and smoke it, as she has to be smoking something other than tobacco. Her smile in the family portrait seems so artificial. Not the mention how vacuous she appears in the photo with her mouth wide open. If she made an attempt to kiss Barack Obama, Michelle Obama would punch her in the face. I’d sell tickets to that event!

How do you think I feel???

I apologize to the country, I live in the 6th district. I am ashamed of Michele and still scratch my head at her victory. Before hardball she has been known to say even crazier things. Why my neighbors voted for her is beyond me? She certainly did not get my vote. God help us!!!

Michelle Bachmann, Queen of the Ultra-Right Plutocracy

With a lunatic like this woman in the Congress think about the mental state of the voters who sent her there as well as of her vacuous cheerleaders across the Country. From this day forward see her as the foremost representative and exemplar of the ultra-Right, quasi-fascist Plutocrats who own not only the elements of the military-industrial-compliant press complex but also the Republican Party itself. Remember her presence in Congress when one of the Rightwinger Stooges of the Congress shows up for a television interview to bray about the patriotism of the Party and its direct connection to Jesus. It would be a correct illustration of her in a poster or in an ad, wrapped in the flag, and equipped with a Bible and a cross, and perhaps with a crown on her head to symbolize her status as Queen Stooge of the Plutocracy.

Michelle Bachman...

is clearly mentally disturbed and certainly a paranoid human being. Fortunately she carries no real weight in the government anymore, and she will probably continue to make Republicans look bad, crazy, and competely out of touch nationwide.

Make sure she sticks around for a long time!

I agree. Let's help her stick around as long as possible. She represents the stincking corpse of the GOP and the best anti marketing for them. Is there a way to make a donation for her?

What is wrong with Minnesota?

How can someone this mentally disturbed BS enough people into voting for her?

The Mad Woman from Minnesota

Not to worry. She is one of the last representatives of the current Republican Party and we can, in a way, be glad she is there because she is going to participate in the utter destruction of the rest of this pathological Party. They are in the process of hardening themselves into a more right wing knot. They will continue to eliminate any and every "moderate" voice among them. The result will be the destruction of the Republican Party. The more Republicans select leaders such as this woman and Sarah Palin, the more Americans will repudiate them. This means that President Obama will be able to bring a whole new, sane, conservative constituency into the Democratic Party. And, for the salvation of our nation, we NEED them. Progressives alone will no more be able to save all of us than right wing Republicans believed that THEY could save us. Progressives, of which I AM ONE, do, indeed, recognize that we are on the cutting edge of "Progress" and need to bring along those who are uncomfortable with us. Obama can do this. Obama has already DONE this. This idiot woman will serve, in the end, to help us.

Michele Bachmann

I must admit I was a little incredulous when I found out she was re-elected (and still feel that way). However, I think you may be right. She will help to destroy what is left of the existing Republican Party. I'm not particularly against all Republicans; I know some who are quite reasonable people with traditional, conservative values. But the Republican Party of today is a snake pit of evil, xenophobic, homophobic, inward gazing, uneducated evangelicals. I don't even live in the U.S. but I live close enough that people like Palin and Bachmann really scare me. D. Roberts, Thunder Bay, ON

tit for tat

"Traitor", "Terrorist"

Bachmann will call her re-election a

mandate from God, and become totally intolerable.
