Katie Couric attacks sexist coverage of Hillary Clinton, but she needs to look in the mirror

BE-ELECTED
by Chad Rubel

Katie Couric came out this week with an indictment of the sexism in the coverage of the presidential candidacy of Hillary Clinton. And she has a point.

Now that may come as a surprise. Not that there wasn't sexism, there definitely was sexism in the campaign. But the surprise comes that I might agree with Katie Couric.

As readers have come to know, I am not a member of the Katie Couric fan club. And it has nothing to do with her gender. There are dozens of women who could do a better job in that seat than Couric.

But Couric does have a distinct position with which to judge the sexism in the campaign: she is after all the managing editor and anchor of the CBS Evening News, and the only female in that role on a major broadcast network. And because of that distinction, her perspective on the coverage is valuable. In her own words:

"It isn't just Hillary Clinton who needs to learn a lesson from this primary season. It's all the people who cross the line, and all the women and men who let them get away with it."

And I wholeheartedly agree. Here's an example of a sexist question during the campaign:

"Someone told me your nickname in school was 'Miss Frigidaire'. Is that true?"

Who was the reporter who asked Hillary Clinton that question? Katie Couric.

There were a lot of horrible statements and questions said by the MSM, especially on TV. But that question to my sensibilities was one of the worst. It was degrading and insulting and sexist. And unlike many of the comments made by the TV pundits (as showcased well by The Daily Show), Couric's question was directed right to Hillary Clinton in person.

So if Couric is serious about how important it is to not "let them get away with it," perhaps the first person she should address is in the mirror. Et tu, Katie.

Katie....

She is a JOKE to real journalists! I was one for over 20 years, and she could have never made the air waves at any of the LOCAL stations I worked for. We can thank the RIGHT WING for chasing off all the GOOD journalists in this country!

This is the way...

Republicans operate.

Miss "Navy Seals Rock" is no Edward R. Murrow.

She's the NutraSweet of Journalism, leaves a bad aftertaste and has no substance!

KATIE COURIC IS NOT A JOURNALIST!

She is a sensationalist who happens to read the news! She should be removed from her news program at once, if her network would like to retain an iota of credibility!!!

calling someone that name wasn't the question

It's a double standard. A male candidate wouldn't be asked that kind of a question. Nothing significant would come out of that question. Even after Couric asked it, she could have taken the question out of the piece. Couric allowed it to be broadcast, so she thought it was OK.

Wasn't the question?

I think you're really digging for anything that can be construed as sexist, the fact that the question was asked by a WOMAN means that either Couric and her editors are sexist and too stupid to know better, or you're the one making an issue where none belongs. I'm the VERY proud father of an outstanding young woman and I'll be damned if I would want her to tolerate blatant sexism or any types of bigotry for that matter, but for her to walk around predisposed to seeing sexism around every corner is just as unacceptable. As a black man originally from the South in the 1950's when things were segregated I can tell you firsthand that you'd better learn quick that you can find bigotry everywhere you look, you gotta be careful picking your battles, the Katie Couric thing is a poor example in my opinion. Barack Obama deals skin color, McCain faces ageism and Romney's religion made him unacceptable for lots of voters, did Hillary confront sexism? yes she did ... but going in to the contest all the candidates knew that these biases would be part of the deal. Hillary didn't face any bigger hurdle than Barack Obama.

Katie

Couric never had a problem being shot from a low angle emphasizing her legs.

Miss. Frigidaire sexist???

Maybe I'm out of touch with what sexism means these days but calling someone Miss. Frigidaire is sexist? There are lots of names guys are called for coming across aloof like "arrogant a-hole " and much worse. I would think that referring to someone in ways that are unmistakably stereotypical should be taken very seriously but we're getting to a point now where it's so subjective nobody knows anymore, I don't. Now I'm trying to figure out how it makes any damned sense that some women who were left angry by Hillary Clinton's loss to Barack Obama because they felt that Hillary was the victim of sexism, are threatening to vote for a guy who could easily be the poster boy for the dominant white patriarchal system? These women would rather vote for McCain over a man who's mother was independent and refused to be defined by societal expectations, the woman more like them. Too confusing to me !

A Lot of Hogwash

There might have been a bit of gender bias in the media, but even some of what Couric mentions is not examples of such. Dorks holding signs in a crowd that say "Iron My Shirt" are dorks in a crowd, not members of the media. So why go to that for an example? Probably because real and legitimate examples are harder to find. The constant banter that suggests that sexism is worse than racism is a meaningless din. Did Hillary have to deal with suggestions of assassination? No, in fact she got away with them. She certainly didn't have to deal with jokes about her being killed or suggestions of her being a terrorist because of her race. Any notion that she had it worse as a white woman than Obama did as a black man is nothing more than sour grapes.

how dare anyone bring up

how dare anyone bring up sexism when we know that the racist clintons were responsible for all the evils which took place during obama's run for the nomination.the clintons constantly referred to obama as "he" thereby introducing sexism into the conflict; just as they referred to president johnson thereby introducing racism into the primaries.obama's opponents come from the dark side and must be eliminated.
