Should a black man play Barack Obama on television?

Barack Obama has been running for president for a while. Not sure if Saturday Night Live knows this. -- Chad

Thanks to the writers strike, "Saturday Night Live" had several months to decide who should play Barack Obama in skits. After all, the last new SNL before the writers strike featured a skit with the Democratic presidential candidates. And who did SNL get to play Obama? Barack Obama.

The show said they searched for an Obama lookalike who could pull it off. Fred Armisen got the nod on Saturday, but it certainly doesn't have to be permanent.

Maureen Ryan of the Chicago Tribune asks whether an African-American should play Obama. Armisen's genetic background isn't black. Saturday Night Live's track record among African-American and female performers has been pretty weak over the years, based on responses from former cast members. Long-time cast member Darrell Hammond, who is white, plays Jesse Jackson.

The "reputation" of Saturday Night Live's political edginess stems mostly from the 1970s, and hasn't really been seen since. True, Bill Clinton was a popular target, but Dana Carvey's milquetoast take on George H.W. Bush and the blandness of Will Ferrell and Chris Parnell (George W. Bush) destroys any "edge" the show ever had.

Amy Poehler has done a great job as Hillary Clinton, and if Clinton wins the Democratic nomination, SNL will be set. Like SNL and the White House to this point, it's been easy just to turn to white men and expect someone to step up.

One possibility, albeit unconventional, would have been Maya Rudolph, but according to this link, she is currently off the show.

SNL has auditioned some African-American men for the role. But here's a fact that Lorne Michaels might not be aware of: Barack Obama has been running for president of the United States since February 10, 2007. And even before that date, Obama was considering a run. The SNL staff has had a long time to find someone, and they have completely dropped the ball.

Perhaps if SNL was more savvy about politics (its lack of attention to the many Bush scandals shows where its politics lie) or, quite frankly, African-Americans, the show would have found someone by now. If I were an African-American male who looked and sounded like Barack Obama, I'd be skeptical about doing Saturday Night Live. But SNL stands to lose what little relevance it has by ignoring the Obama issue. But hey, don't worry: at least Mike Huckabee showed up. The white guys always show up.

Should a black man play Barack Obama on television?

One of the dumbest commentaries I've seen on Buzzflash?

Sorry. But, ah, guys? Are we really clear on Fred Armisen's "genetic makeup"?

If we are going to get racist, let's use the apartheid South African classifications. Isn't virtually every African-American today "coloured" with some Caucasian in his heritage? I don't see a lot of native-born Americans on the bus that make me say, "Man, that guy really looks Zulu, or Mandingo, or Maasai!"

There was an African-American who wrote a fun book about taking whatever local ground transportation was available from Paris to Jo'burg. He said he could be walking in central Africa miles outside the next village and there would be kids running ahead of him shouting, "American, American." He said he was always recognized as non-African on sight and they would guess he was probably American from his height, weight and healthy appearance.

I VOTE 4 REGGIE REG TO GET ON THE OBAMA TRAIL AT SNL

IT'S NOT SO MUCH ABOUT RACE - BUT WHO CAN GET THE JOB DONE. IT TAKES TIME TO PREPARE IMPRESSIONS AND TO IMITATE OBAMA, THAT'S NOT SUCH AN EASY TASK BECAUSE OBAMA'S STYLE IS SO COOL. REGGIE REG IS NOT JUST AN ORDINARY COMEDIAN, HE CAN MAKE YOU LAUGH WHEN YOU SEE HIS PERFORMANCE BECAUSE HIS DELIVERANCE AND TIMING IS SO REAL. REGGIE ALSO IMITATES DENZEL, JESSE, AL PACINO, JUST TO NAME A FEW.

REGGIE HAS PLAYED CLUBS IN SOUTH SIDE CHICAGO; AND PERFORMED ON "THE LATE SHOW WITH DAVID LETTERMAN"; HBO'S "P.DIDDY PRESENTS THE BAD BOYS OF COMEDY" AND CURRENTLY ACTING IN A STAGE PLAY IN THE NYC AREA. REGGIE HAS PERFECTED OBAMA'S MANNERISM'S & VOICE, WHICH CAN BE VIEWED ON YOUTUBE, MY.BREAK.COM, AND TOMORROWPICTURES.COM.

SO GO CHECK HIM OUT, THEN CAST YOUR VOTE BY LETTING SNL KNOW THAT REGGIE REG IS READY! rmiller206@yahoo.com

Boo!

Never mind race -- Fred Armisen just sucked in that skit. I wasn't impressed by Amy Poehler either, though I admit I haven't seen her earlier work. The skit was, as so often with SNL over the years, a big waste of potentially good comic material. Armisen did not capture Obama's bearing, mannerisms, or speech at all. It was as if he'd never seen Obama and was imitating someone else's description of him.

Get a grip, who cares.

SNL has had white people play blacks before, like Jesse Jackson, to great comedic effect. As an Obama supporter, I was no where close to being offended.

Obama has played himself on SNL, and in a color blind world, finding the best "Obama" shouldn't be limited to skin color.

Whoa!

Personally, I'm a little ticked that the media and tv continuously refers to Obama as the black candidate. Breaking News: OBAMA IS BI-RACIAL ... white mother ... black father. Ever notice they never refer to McCain as the Irish/American candidate? And speaking of the transplanted Arizona Leprechaun, why did he facilitate the forced "eminent domain' of 10,000 Native Americans off their ancestral land so a political contributor could expand copper mining operations? This hypocrite is beyond the pale.

PC

If SNL should be politically correct and find a black man to play Obama, can they still keep Mr. Armisen to play his white half?

RE: PC

Yeah, who ever heard of a two-faced politician? They should have a white republican guy and a pissed off black guy as Siamese twins.
