Who in Illinois Will Replace Barack Obama in the Senate? Blogging About Blagojevich.
MARK KARLIN'S EDITOR'S BLOG: Another BuzzFlash Perspective on Our Homestate Politics.
Everyone knows that governors appoint replacements when Senate seats become vacant.
In fact, just yesterday, BuzzFlash focused on the strong possiblity that Sarah Palin would appoint herself senator if convicted GOP felon Ted Stevens wins re-election (which appears likely, although the absentee ballots are still being counted) and then is forced out of the senate or resigns This would give her a national forum for her ignorance, but in her eyes provide her a platform for running in the Republican primaries in 2012.
So, what about the governor from our BuzzFlash home state of Illinois? Who will Rod Blagojevich appoint to replace Barack Obama?
Well, Blagojevich had a news conference yesterday in Chicago in which he announced that he might not make a decision until the end of the year. Blagojevich, a former Congressman, declared that he was not interested in appointing himself, but don't rule that out. Don't rule that out at all.
Blajojevich has an approval rating in Illinois, according to a recent Chicago Tribune poll, of 13%! Yes, you read that right. Without getting into why an Illinois Democratic governor with a Democratic legislature would have a lower approval rating in his state than that of George W. Bush, let's just say that Blagojevich appointing himself would get him out of having to run for re-election in 2010 and probably losing in the Democratic primary to Lisa Madigan, the enormously popular, personable and professional Illinois Attorney General (and daughter of the all-powerful Speaker of the Illinois House, Michael Madigan, who -- and this gets complicated -- is the arch foe of Blagojevich.)
That's of course if Blagojevich doesn't get indicted first. BuzzFlash has noted from the begining of the Rezko investigation by famed U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald (yes, he of the Scooter Libby prosecution) that Blagojevich is the big fish that the feds are pursuing. (Obama's relationship with Rezko may have been a lapse in judgment for the perennial Boy Scout, but there was nothing illegal about it.) So, appointing himself to the Senate would not necessarily keep Blagojevich from being indicted, which many local pundits predict is just a matter of time.
But Blagojevich, according to most of us who follow him, is in a state of denial, and may see a move to Washington as a practical career step. You can't usually get much lower than 13% in approval rating, but it's possible for Rod if he sticks around. His only significant ally in Springfield is State Senate President Emil Jones, who is retiring after this session. The new Democratic State Senate President (who will be elected by his or her peers) is likely to adopt a more adversarial position toward "Blago," as he is nicknamed.
Now isn't that a scenario that would make you want to get out of the Governor's office?
If Blagojevich doesn't appoint himself, it's not clear how much influence Obama would have on his selection, because they are not close, and Blagojevich marches to the beat of a different drummer, so to speak.
Rumor has it that Obama favors Congressman Jesse Jackson, Jr., who was a steadfast supporter of Obama from the beginning, and who even chastised his famous father when he was caught (on a hot mike) making some disparaging remarks about Obama.
One of our favorite possible Senate appointments is Chicago-area Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky (who also happens to be my representative in Congress.) Jan, who started her political career as a consumer advocate, is a tireless and unapologetic progressive. Like Obama, she doesn't get rattled or defensive when challenged about her viewpoints; she disarms critics of her public policies with candor and persuasion.
U.S. Senator and Assistant Majority Leader Dick Durbin (whose 40-year-old daughter just tragically passed away from a congenital heart condition) is said to favor Iraq Vet Tammy Duckworth, who is currently head of the Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs.
And then there are more names being tossed into the speculation hopper than you can shake a stick at.
But the betting is that Blagojevich is keeping his options open to determine which person would benefit him the most as Obama's replacement. That's, of course, if he doesn't get indicted first.

BuzzFlash Note: Although BuzzFlash generally steadfastly defends Democrats, if you live in Illinois you would understand that "Blago" would best benefit progressives and Democrats by exiting the political scene. His strongest skills are making enemies and engaging in "pay to play" campaign fundraising schemes. The 13% of Illinois residents who still support him are either people who believe Elvis is still alive ("Blago" has made his love of all things Elvis into a regular campaign shtick) or who have gotten patronage jobs because of Blagojevich. Maybe he also gets a few percentage points of voter support from people who like guys with "big hair."

Who in Illinois Will Replace Barack Obama in the Senate?
My guess would be Bill Ayers!!!!
GO! for Jan Sharkowsky!
Mark, I don't think (hardly) anyone in (the Democrats in) DC understands just how IMPORTANT RADIO - "liberal" talk radio - is to getting Dem voices heard, and WINNING popular, PUBLIC SUPPORT for the genuine, "small-d" democratic Agenda, and Democratic politics. Even listening to Al Franken - a former talk-radio host! - doing interviews on some of those talk shows just before the election, he would quickly veer off subject in to sentimental or family stories. Franken was "soft" on HITTING HIS TALKING POINTS, one after the other, and DRIVING 'em HOME in a 3, 4 minute radio interview!
As much as a politics geek as I am, I didn't know just how excellent Jan was, until I heard her in a 2-3 minute clip on radio yesterday.
Driving from Greensboro, NC, to Durham last week (immediately after going to Senator Joe Biden's campaign rally in Greensboro, as a matter of fact), I found RUSH LIMBAUGH on FIVE AM radio stations at the same time (and Wingo Dennis Miller on a 6th station) - WITH NOT ONE "liberal" STATION ANYWHERE, even in relatively cosmopolitan, "progressive" Greensboro! (Nor did I find any in my brief pass through Durham - seat of thousands of college students at local universities!)
LACK of "liberal" voices on the air, is THE ONLY reason that McCain scored as many votes as he did (since he, like Phil Gramm, has been AT GROUND ZERO of EVERY US Economic Crisis since the "Keating 5" Savings & Loan debacle of the 1980s.)
In fact, as good as the Obama campaign has been, IT has NOT LINKED the DEREGULATION of the 1980s, with the current economic crisis - even with ENRON, BEAR STEARNS, FANNIE-MAE, Goldman-Sachs, LEHMAN, and a dozen other major companies now being the new LINCOLN, SILVERADO, and CEN-TRUST POSTER CHILDren of the current economic crisis!
Not to _lecture_ our President-Elect, but IF you do NOT insist on, and commission, a THOROUGH INVESTIGATION of the INSIDER TRADING CORRUPTION that led to THIS economic crisis, the Righties - who, regardless of Vote 2008 STILL DOMINATE THE MEDIA AIRWAVES (ESPECIALLY RADIO) AND PRESS!) - WILL find a "lefty-liberal" SCAPEGOAT to blame THIS Bush-2 Recession on.... - EVEN IF THEY HAVE TO CREAT A MOUNTAIN of bulls*** 'facts' to do so!
JUST AS THEY DID, in the 1990s, effectively placing ALL the BLAME for the Bush-Gramm-McCain (et al) SAVINGS & LOAN DEBACLE on the hapless Jim McDougal!
NO, the Righties did not actually claim that McDougal was THE epicenter of the entire $500 billion (in 1980s money) S&L crisis.... it is just that the FORESTS OF TREES and OCEANS OF INK the "major media" spilled on McDougal - remorseless "WHITEWATER!" muckracking, MOST OF IT MADE UP, EFFECTIVELY PUSHED other, more accurate, S&L scandal news from the 1980s & fallout in the 1990s OUT of the front pages of the press/media discourse all through the 1990s.
(The NY Times and Wash.Post led the media race to the bottom of 'journalistic' infamy, as recounted in Gene Lyons and Conason's book, "The Hunting of the President.")
The dirty little secret of the "Major Media" of course is that it is WHAT IS ON THE FRONT PAGES that determines public opion. Unless the economy is SO TRASHED that people figure it out for themselves, what is buried deep in the editorial pages does NOT have much influence in public perceptions or voter knowledge.
An exception would be William Safire & WSJ editorials blasting the Clintons in the early 1990s. But because the Clintons never effectively rebutted or shot-down the Safire, WSJ, Rush Limbaugh editorials, their talking points SOON DOMINATED the _FRONT PAGES_ of the "mainstream press, especially when the drumbeat of relentless "SCANDAL!" commentary finally forced Ken Starr to renounce his resignation, and then the Ken Starr/Monic IMPEACHMENT finally took root.
Hate to run down all this _OLD HISTORY_, but I'd like to HEAR A HELL OF A LOT MORE about Jan Sharkowsky... and as a "fightin' liberal" I would hope my fellow Americans out there in RURAL COMMUNITIES would get to hear Jan, and other competent, fightin' progressive Dems as well...
BUT WITHOUT HEARING Jan on TALK RADIO, I NEVER WOULD HAVE KNOWN HOW GOOD SHE IS!
(even though she was the Obama co-chair; she hits her talking points and campaign themes even better than Senator Claire McCaskill does, and far better than Obama campaign other co-chair, former Senator Tom Daschle did.)
