Crazy Catholics, Other Religious Nuts After Obama in First Week

Not to be left behind by political ideologues, the religious right is getting in on the Obama bashing in the new president's first week in office.

The day after the 36th anniversary of the Supreme Court ruling on Roe v. Wade, President Barack Obama lifted the global gag rule, allowing international aid groups to still receive federal funding even if they do not pledge to oppose abortion rights.

Well, of course, this action sent Donald Wildmon, founder of the American Family Association, into one of his regular tizzies. He sent out an "action alert" earlier this week that twisted the news until it sounded like Obama would be personally flying around the world to murder babies.

Of course, Wildmon also directed his flock's attention to a new online video from CatholicVote.com that is just as disgusting as his own e-mail. The video appropriates the president's image and suggests that his mother would have aborted him, if only it had been legal. This is so far from the truth as to be almost laughable, if it weren't so deplorable.

And wait: the fight is about to get even more political. The religious right jumped all over House Speaker Nancy Pelosi when she tried to defend the addition of family planning funds in the economic stimulus package.

Of course, the logic is that a package of birth control pills for an uninsured young woman is much cheaper than pregnancy. Many states (including Obama's home state) already provide family planning services for free to women under a certain income level. Since many states (again including Illinois) are facing fiscal crises, why not help them help their residents avoid costly unplanned pregnancies?

The communication director for the Catholic League was pissed, but she couldn't explain why. She's quoted here sputtering, "It's quite shocking, actually, that the Speaker of the House -- who claims to be Catholic -- would go on national television and claim that contraception would reduce the cost to the government... It's just beyond words, really."

Hmmm... beyond words, or beyond argument? And she calls herself a communications director?

The league's president makes even less sense in the same article. He said the Democrats' addition of the funding "explains their enthusiasm for abortion-on-demand," another incomprehensible argument. Family planning programs have been shown to reduce abortion, not increase it.

The article goes on to freak out about how our birth rate is dangerously low, even though fertility rates in this country are on the upswing, and are much higher than most other industrialized nations. The Wall Street Journal parrots this same line in an irresponsible editorial today, pretending that our workforce is shrinking. Anyone can tell you it's jobs that are disappearing, not people.

This last one is either a copyediting mistake or a Freudian slip, but telling (and amusing) enough to include in this update. Father Tom Euteneuer, president of Human Life International, wrote this at the end of a blog about how bummed he and his supporters are because "anti-lifers hold the reins of political power:"

"I promise you that Human Life International will be in the struggle for lives and souls continuously. It is our calling and mission. We will never give one inch to uphold the truth that the whole world needs to hear more than ever." (Emphasis ours)

Yeah, it didn't seem like you guys were all that into the truth anyway. Why give an inch when the Democrats will give a mile?

Yes, the latest news is that Obama is trying to convince the House to drop the funding for family planning, even though the GOP is probably going to shoot down the stimulus bill anyway. So, despite the lack of logic in their marginalized hyperventilating, it looks like the religious right might win today's fight anyway.

There are more Important Issues

Here we go again. Both sides of the right to life (?) and the right of choice going at one-another tooth and nail. In the meantime, the slaughter of innocent babes and toddlers and their mothers in Gaza, the poisoning of fields and forests and water supplies around the world with carcinogenic chemicals in the form of pesticides, herbicides, so-called fertilizers, BMO seeds being forced upon the farmers, famine, torture of women, the inherent cruelty of industrial greed, devastation of precious natural resources--you name it--it's all occurring at this very moment in various places around this planet. Yet in this society we insist on separating ourselves over the issue of the existence of a soul or spirit in the human fetus. The fetus is indeed a developing organism, but I cannot accept the idea that this fetus is imbued with a human spirit or soul. It has no name stamped upon it. I simply avoid the conservative Catholics as well as the bible-thumping Protestants who can say "we know" with such audacity and arrogance. I respect all religions and beliefs whether I agree with them or not. I am not religious, but I have a belief in an eternal spirit--of Light and Love. I do not presume, however, to be absolutely correct. One thing that causes me to wonder about many of these comments is a blatant and rabid anti-Roman Catholic sentiment which seems to have become fashionable again. I've known and shared a laugh with many Catholics as well as hardcore Protestant Evangelicals. In another opinion page noticed that someone accused Benedict of hatred and intolerance. This is the same Pope who within the last month and more spoke publicly, vigorously denouncing this latest attack on the Palestinians in Gaza by Israel. Where was all this imbecilic name-calling then? As one who has made a study of history and religion I know that the Roman Church has been wrong many times-terribly wrong. A Polish Roman Catholic priest risked being burned at the stake by publishing his belief that the Earth and planets revolved around the sun (a fact of which a number of Americans are still unaware). His works were, however, banned for a long period of time. His name was Copernicus. Has anyone heard of John Calvin? He was a cornerstone of the fundamentalist movement a few centuries back whose followers hunted down Catholics and anyone else who disagreed with them and did away with them in the most bloodthirsty, ruthless fashion. Why do people make themselves god?

Religious fanatics of any stripe are bad news.

In the interests of getting the economic stimulus plan passed it makes sense to me to take out the family planning funding piece.

Why give Boehner and the weirdos an issue they can use to toss the proverbial baby out with the bathwater?

I think with the rescinding of the global gag rule Obama has signaled where he stands on reproductive rights. Let funding for contraception go into some other bill. It's important, no doubt, but it doesn't make sense to put too much in any piece of legislation.

The yahoos are not gone, but there are fewer of them than there once were.

Critical thinking is abhorrent to them--they want someone to tell them what to do, and what's right and wrong. And as we see, there is never a shortage of manipulative, greedy charlatans who are ready and able to exploit their stupidity and intellectual laziness for their own personal gain.

Let the Rethugs have them. As Jefferson said about the issue of slavery, they have a tiger by the tail: very dangerous to hold on, but they dare not let go. In the end, demographics alone will marginalize and isolate them from civilized society.

The Birth Rate Is Low?

Also this past week we were once again bombarded with 'news' about that Haggard critter who, among other fundamentalist nut cases, was close to Bush during his reign of terror.

And speaking of Bush, how can we forget Jeff Gannon? Having a male prostitute servicing males is one sure fire way to not have to worry about birth control!

I was going to remove the Abbie Hoffman quote below that I used as a signature line during Bush's 8 long years of phony religion & phonier job as pRes., but it still seems appropriate.

The U.S. Birth Rate

I have wondered about the United States birth rate rising faster than, let's say, Europe's for a while. With the population bomb ticking; and government plans to reduce population afoot---not that chemtrails baloney, but more prosaic measures like gene-sensitive pathogens, crop disease, and plain old "letting the poor, elderly, and infirm die" from lack of medical care---do our fearless authoritarian/religious leaders (Obama is no exception here) plan on U.S. citizens (the true believing kind) colonizing the rest of the world in the wake of the depopulation of Africa, Europe, and Asia? We DO need population control---from the top down. If the top 40% of the population (asset-wise) was eliminated, the rest of us would have a GREATLY improved chance of reasonable, sustainable self-governance. There seems to be a direct correlation between money and pathocracy, and pathocrats, along with their followers and syncophants, must be eliminated.

Buxxflashers will also throw their own under the bus.not that i am a catharcist or anything but look at the number of comments to the one i made abot the way i have to live ! and theonly one told me to get drunk.wasnt that some "real love"? where is the compassion people claim to have for the poor-even on BF.none at all.so some of us get "thrown under the bus" just like the right wingers do.no one cares about one another these days.it is all flagilistic narcissism(all self-love)--the ME AND MY 4 AND NO MORE type of people.they say christians should help or the govt should help but they dont go out and help their neighbor.and thats precisely why i stopped handling emergency communications for hurricanes here on the Gulf Coast.how many have you helped today or been the proverbial "good samatarian"to and help heal their wounds? it sure got quiet in here !! but i suppose helping others is socialism..can't have that can we?

How Can the Right Do this To Me?

The Christian Right--who say they love Jesus-turn from their needy neighbor..The comment before mine was "right on". So why does the Christian Right leave me here(even tho an agnostic/atheist) and gay at that and reject me.I live in a run-down 40-year-old mobile home with snakes and rats in the summer and the roof leaks..FEMA has condemned it but they onlt sent $1100 to help.. you cant do shit with that !! yet i have to sit here in the almost cold house-going to be 30 degrees here tonite with ice and icy roads !my roof leaks and i just have to live with it-i have no where to go--no car except my sisters next door and her house is in bad state of repair as well.i only get $673/mo SSI and my food stamps were cut in Jan from 42 to 20 dollars so i gave them back and told them where to shove the food stamps. The Seventh Day Adventists threw me out here back in 2000 when they found out i was gay and living with HIV !! So much for "GOD'S REMNANT CHURCH" they claim to be!!That's why i know so much about the Catholics and their religious dogma.So i get doors thrown in my face all the time from the Religious Wrong(Right)! what am i supposed to do? NO DAMN WONDER I BECAME AN AVOWED ATHEIST !!I dont even think a god nor a jesus exists.i am a free thinker.but all that does not get me another house.i have explained in other posts my ham radio public service work with hurricanes the past 30 years yet when i NEED HELP I GET NO DAMN HELP..I think in that situation-living under what i have to--then death for me would be much better situation--not that i am going to kill myself..but death sure looks inviting to me for sure!!FEMA wont help--HABITAT4HUMANITY WONT HELP-you have to be black or Mexican to get something from them !!and if another hurricane hits here like it will tghis trailer is gone with me in it!! sorry to be so blunt here but i am a realist. i have no where to go.i dont have funds for a 400 dollar a month apartment in town..this is a college town and not many available..no houses either to rent.college kids all take them. so there is nothing left for me but to wait for the next hurricane.i faxexd the MIAMI HURRICANE CENTER and told them i wouldnt be helping out with hurricanes any more..they had told me on 3 occassions to get out of this trailer but i said i have no where to go..ALSO FAXED OBAMA but he aint gonna do anything!! so here is sit waiting on the ice to come in. and with 2 small electric heaters and if the power lines break then i will have no heat at all..old indian proverb says "NEVER JUDGE AN INDIAN TILL YOU HAVE WALKED A MILE IN HIS MOCCASINS"..anyone want to trade places with me? i got $1.30 in the bank till i get my Feb money.i am diabetic and cant use alcohol nor do i use tobacco. so i am in a world of hurts here.last week i cried for 4 days i was so depressed.if i had had a gun handy gue what i would have done.no i dont have mental problems.i am not a crazed lunatic.but there has to be a better way than living the way i have to.and my neighbors says "i dont see how you live over there and make it"..yet they do nothing about it and go on their merry way yet they believe in jesus.makes me pretty damn sick.why arent they doing what their so called damn fucking god told them to do? no, they think thats socialism..cant have that, can we?

Babies! Unborn babies! Cute, sweet, innocent, perfect little unborn babies! (Until, they're born into this world and infected with "original sin" by virtue of breathing their first breath. Then they become scum just like their parents.) Funny, based on the Biblical story of the creation of Adam, I always thought it was the spirit of God that we receive upon breathing our first breath, thereby making each of us, individually, "a living being." In other words our first breath fills us with "original blessing" rather than cursing us with "original sin." (Matthew Fox) But then, again, it costs you, as an outside observer, nothing to scream how important it is for all women to be willing to conceive and bear a child to full term anytime a man wants to drop his semen. If, however, you seek to demand care for that child after it's born, it's likely to cost you a good deal for the next 18 years or longer. In opposing birth control and abortion, you can continue to be cheaper than cheap and still feel morally superior! (When what you should really be, is fearful and ashamed, based on Jesus' description of the last judgment in the Gospel of Matthew.)

What do you expect from the Roman Catholic(universal) Church of Rome ? They are the one who in 325 A.D change the day of biblical worship of Saturday to the "sun god" day of worship on Sunday under the influence of Constatine.he was a sun worshipper and came into the church and said "i got all my sun worshippers(pagan) worshipping the sun on Sunday so what can i do with these who worship on Saturday? i will issue a decree and change..all will be forced to worship on Sunday from now on..People, read you Catholic History !! Then the same bunch of Catholics decided to kill and wipe off 3 nations of people in Central Europe in the 9th and 10th century--namely, the Vandalgoths,Visergoths,and the Ostergoths(of NOW AUSTRIA).The Catholics undet the decree of the papal system wiped these people off the face of the earth. why? because they would not worship on Sunday..They worshipped on Saturday like their Jesus had done.Adherance to Sunday worship is taking the mark of the beast the bible says.i have studied many churches and that is what it says.Protestants are not protesting the Catholics any more.I dont believe in Jesus but i have studied "church" history.Read THE GREAT CONTROVERSY and you will see what went on.I am not SDA either.so i am not surprised when these reprobates shove their dogma down other people lives.They have been liars,murderers and all of that over the years.they preach against homosexuality but the priests have sex with the under ago altar boys.and this evil church is just the tip of the iceberg.Not that i believe in sin but the Roman Catholic Church is evil in all its ways.BEWARE lest they lead you astray.i cannot be fooled by religion.But it is basically the system they live under and not the peopel themselves.the church is the crutch they lean on for support. Real Christianity Died With Jesus

It's as if the so-called believers have forgotten how easy Jesus made it for simpletons like Sarah Palin to understand religious law: "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."

When Jesus died, all the men around him fled for the hills. The women stayed around, buried him, etc. and kept the story alive until they were overtaken by the men. It was Paul, some many years later, who really made the Church take off in the popular imagination of all the Roman slaves. So, your point is well taken. Whatever happened to the simple basic message this guy preached and died for? Politics. Nothing has changed.

Radical Conservatism's Marriage To The Christian Right

Let's face it, history has shown that Christianity and politics is a marriage made in hell and its progeny are discrimination, hatred, murder and war that either harm or kill millions in the name of the Prince of Peace. It is no different today. The Christian Right's main problem is how to match apostate forms of doctrines based on theocratric govenments, when its adherents live within a pluralistic democratic republic. That is why many of their political beliefs are different from mainstream Christianity. Mainstream Christians hold their beliefs within a private, denominational or parachurch framework; they do not enter the public arena and demand that government executives, legislative and judical bodies codify their beliefs into law. They are not at war with society to bring in a physical kingdom that Christ defined as a rule within the heart. To the point, they are not insurrectionists whose aim is to take over the United States, as more than two-thirds of religious fundamentalists teach. It is time to demand that the Christian Right get back into their churches and carry out Christ's admonition to preach the gospel and change people's hearts. If they want change, then the right way to get it is to live the gospel through love, tolerance and charity to those in need, not the hard-nosed, mean spirited unloving political rhetoric that has defined the movement. Governing outside the church involces compromise, something the Christian Right is incapable of doing because of a black and white mindset. In a world of millions of shades of gray, anyone who can only see black and white is visually impaired. As a born again Christian who has carried this message to others since 1983, the revival these people desire will only come when their activsm returns to forms of loving others and getting out of politics. Christians are married to Christ and acts of charity for all men, women and children regardless of race, gender, race, color, religious belief or worldview. In this case a divorce from politics is not only required it is also taught in the New Testament.

And we have elected a wise man. ====> We also need a BRAVE man. Once we have listened, and debated, which is the right and proper thing to do..... we need a man of decisions, who recognizes the mandate of the people who put him in office =====> i think we also have that BUT that is to be proven over the coming 2-3 months. From the standpoint of the American Middle-class and Poor (95% of the public) Republicans have been wrong about EVERYTHING for the past 30 years. It is time we and the Democratic (and I use the term loosely) 'leadership' acknowledge this REALITY and act accordingly. Conservative policies have destroyed this country by any measure you care to choose. After the attempted coup de grâce of the last 8 years, the republic will be lucky to survive. These Corporatist anti-American bastards must be crushed so that we can move to the future. Let's understand that these anti-America factions will do everything they can to stop democracy in its tracks and attempt to complete the Fascist coup that was attempted by the patriarch of the Bush Family - Prescott Bush.
