Terry McAuliffe Tips His Hand: Hillary Won't be VP Candidate With Obama

A News Alert

Terry McAuliffe apparently tipped his hand when he told a Virginia Democratic gathering that their Governor, Tim Kaine, would be the best choice for Obama to choose as his running mate.

According to a July 24th article in the Falls Church News-Press (Virginia),

The former national chairman of the Democratic Party who ran Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign this year told 200 Democratic activists in Fairfax County Tuesday that Virginia Governor Tim Kaine would be his party's best choice as Barack Obama's vice presidential running mate.

In a Bill and Hillary Clinton camp loaded with steadfast loyalists, few stand out as strongly and as forcefully as Terry McAuliffe -- who is a Clinton diehard (both Bill and  Hillary) as they come.  He's the money raiser par excellance for them, campaign manager, former Chair of the DNC at Bill Clinton's behest, etc.

So when he tells a group of Virginia Dems that Kaine would be the best VP for Obama, he is revealing that Senator Hillary Clinton is not going to get the nod.  It's a very telling acknowledgement in the season of VP speculation, and particularly whether Clinton has a chance on a "Unity" ticket.

Let's be crystal clear, as they say, McAuliffe and the rest of the Clinton staff fought tenaciously to the last moment to try and secure the nomination.  McAuliffe would not be touting another VP candidate if he though Hillary had a chance. Period.

You just don't do that with the Clintons. You fight till the last dog dies for a Clinton.

In his speech to the Fairfax County Democratic Committee this week, McAuliffe, unnoticed by the corporate media gave the world the answer about whether Hillary Clinton will be Obama's running mate.

And the answer, based on McAuliffe's whole hearted endorsement of Kaine, is clear.

The Obama ticket will not have Hillary Clinton on it.

McAuliffe would be singing a different tune if that were a possibilty.  He would be boosting her for the position, but he's not.  And that speaks volumes.

A BUZZFLASH NEWS ALERT

This BuzzFlash "news alert"

This BuzzFlash "news alert" is an example of the kind of thing that has been appearing on BuzzFlash all too often over the last year or so and it represents the reason that I decline to provide any financial support to BuzzFlash. To some extent I regret that decision because BuzzFlash has been for the most part one of the best sources of information on the web. However, during the primary campaign and even now that it is over, I'm distressed at the unrelenting attacks on Hillary Clinton. I supported John Edwards originally. When it came down to a contest between Clinton and Obama, I had no clear-cut preferred candidate, although I had a slight lean toward Clinton. Both candidates, however, had negatives that kept me from supporting either of them whole-heartedly. Now that Obama is the presumed Democratic candidate, I will definitely support him in preference to McCain--in spite of the fact that I have been disappointed in some of his positions since capturing the nomination. What I do not understand is why BuzzFlash--and various other left-wing sites, for that matter--find it necessary to continue to attack Hillary Clinton. Nor did I understand the venom directed at her by BuzzFlash and other sites during the primary campaigns; I was appalled at the acceptance of blatant misogynistic attacks aimed at Clinton while any comment concerning Obama that could conceivably be characterized as racist was immediately and vehemently derided even when it clearly was not a case of "playing the race card". This so-called "news alert" is filled with anti-Clinton innuendo that, so far as I can tell, has no basis in fact, and I find it absolutely disgusting. Clinton was an admirable candidate, although she defintely had her negatives. BuzzFlash and other left sites refused to acknowledge any of her good qualities--of which there are many--and instead frequently distorted what she said or even manufactured negatives. Why is this? I'm constantly working to ensure that former Hillary supporters do not vote for McCain in the general election, but the continuation of unwarranted attacks on Clinton even as she works on behalf of Obama--which so many of the Clinton haters claimed she would _never_ do--makes it extremely difficult to overcome the justified anger at the way she was treated. Once again the left is about to shoot itself in the foot.

Just one thing

This would be a pretty interesting story if it hadn't already been pretty well established that Terry McAuliffe is stark raving mad.

I Hope He Is Right

I hope he is right because I don't want Obama using Hillary to win. Too many women get the seat that propels a man to success and then they end up doing the grunt work. Hillary is too accomplished to be Obama's second. Let's see if he can win it on his own and then when he loses, Hillary in 2012.

Let HRC have a position with the admin...

...but certainly not veep. BTW, when will McAuliffe start being referred to as "Judas?"

The Dim The Dumb The Deluded

jodi = one of the millions of the dim dumb and deluded.
Am I happy that Obama is the Democratic Nominee? Not hardly! But it won't be the first time I've had to put the proverbial clothes pin on my nose before I enter the voting booth. The choice is between a bright, articulate, perspicacious, vibrant, healthy young man with great promise versus a senile, stooge of the oligarchy, with no cogent plans for the future of America. McCain's complete lack of knowledge on the critical issues of the day, his tendency toward selective amnesia, venality added to a lifetime of "accomplishments" that do not even reach the level of mediocrity make for an Administration worse than Bush's. Voting for McCain falls into the category of "a crime against humanity".

Sad when women need to be told not to vote Obama

Colleen Clark: Those of us that do not live our lives as subservient to speakers like Obama, noted through out the campaign that Obama was willing to call anyone a racist in order to win votes. He began by calling Bill Clinton racist for stating an historical fact,,,,"Jesse Jackson won SC too." He then called Ms Ferraro a racist for stating the obvious, "Obama would not be in this position if he were a white man or any color woman." These 2 people along with Hillary are people that have fought for all of us for as long as I can remember and Bill CLinton has an office in Harlem. How dumb does one have to be to believe anything Obama says after that. Changing the rules....Obama removed his name from the MI ballot and then insisted on being given not only the delegates for all who voted uncommitted (which includes those voting Richardson, Edwards and others) but also insisted on being given 4 of the delegates Hillary won due to voters voting for Hillary CLinton. He removed his name to play to the voters of Iowa and not because of any agreement to do so....that was another of his lies. Second rule Obama changed: The only requirement for Superdelegates is to vote for the candidate with the best chance to win. Clearly the candidate with the best chance was the one who won all of the big states we need like CA where Obama had Kennedy, Kerry and Oprah stumping and still lost to Hillary...........as well as to vote to nominate the candidate that won the most popular votes and that was clearly Hillary. The only way Obama comes close is if we count the uncommitted MI votes which were not meant for him at least not entirely. But Obama convinced Super Delegates that if they failed to support Obama then he would insure that they lost their seats by keeping the blacks from voting. This man Obama is nothing but trash and believe me even if he put Hillary on the ticket, I would still have great difficulty voting for that ticket and most likely would not. Blacks were smart enough to group together and vote for the black candidate while women have still not learned to support each other. Too bad because it will be another 30 years before a woman other than Hillary comes along with the ability to do the job and win the election. I would never vote for any woman whose name has been mentioned for VP and has not stepped to a micrphone and clearly stated that she would not consider being the Hillary replacement which is all any other woman on this ticket would be. Obama was only capeable of winning the primary with cheap and sleazy tricks and does not have the ability to do the job. I won't even get started on the sexist rants Obama made including giving the middle finger while saying Hillary's name and waiting for applause, because any woman that did not get that as it was happening is subservient to all men. Grow up for the sake of your future daughters or nieces. Any woman that would vote Obama is clearly one of the problems preventing women from ever getting ahead. It is very sad that any woman should need to be told why Obama is no good. McCain 2008 HILLARY 2012

Don't patronize me please.

Jodi -
I have one daughter, and 4 granddaughters ranging in age from 2 to 17.
And lest you think I'm ignorant and benighted - I graduated from college with honors,
spent 2 years in the Peace Corps, got a master's degree in public health, later completed
most of the work toward a doctorate, worked on women's and children's health all my
professional life.
Is it news to you that not all women, even women of Clinton's generation, were not supporting her candidacy? I polled all my friends and family and while there were some adamant Clinton supporters (including 2 very good friends whose opinions I respect and take seriously) the majority were for Obama, including 2 women schoolteachers (not acquainted with each other), both born in 1942 or 1943, one on the east coast and one on the west coast, who became Obama supporters more than a year ago when they read his first book. Smart women like to think for themselves and that includes not necessarily preferring Hillary Clinton.

We needn't rehash the Democratic primary season. What's facing us all now is a choice between Obama and McCain. In 2000 a lot of grumpy progressives voted for Ralph Nader. That led directly to GWB's sort of election. Are you saying that it doesn't matter who wins if your preferred Democrat is not the nominee? I must say, I think that's foolish. And what makes you think that McCain and the Republicans would only be in for 1 term?

Colleen Clark

Sorry Colleen.

I wholeheartedly agree with everything you've said, but one. Nader wasn't the problem in 2000. Gore won. You know the rest.

Of course Gore won

But if it hadn't been for so many Nader votes Florida wouldn't have been close enough for
Jeb Bush, Katharine Harris, the Republican goons, and the Supreme Court to have handed Bush the White House.

.

Very good point.

Hillary as V.P.

From a long term political perspective Hillary would be wise not be the V.P.candidate. Should Obama win, realistically she couldn't run for nomination in 2012. (The only Democratic president who was not renominated by his party for a second term was Franklin Pierce, the 14th president.) She'd have to wait until 2016! By that time I'm sure that they'll be other highly qualified women on the scene with less baggage than Hillary. Hillary's only chance at the presidency is to not run for V.P. with Obama and hope that Obama loses the election. This puts her in the position of "I told you so" in the run up to the 2012 election. If she was to run for V.P. with Obama and they lose together, she'll be looked upon by many as the one who spoiled the opportunity for victory in 2008 and making a successful run in 2012 very unlikely and probably an impossibility.

Hope for no Change in the VP pick

I "hope" Obama will not "change" his mind and pick Hillary for VP because then I would have to reconsider my vote. I am voting McCain, a republican ticket for the first time in my life after voting democrat since 1972. The "change" Obama has brought to the democratic party has been to "change" the rules during a primary and a loss of all "hope" for equal rights for women which will be quickly followed by a loss of all equal rights for everyone if we are foolish enough to elect Obama. As a long time Clinton supporter I would have to vote the ticket if Hillary was on the ticket but will not vote Obama even if another woman were to be VP. This primary was not about voting a woman, it was all about voting for the only qualified candidate in the democratic primary. I can and have voted in the past for who ever won the primary but I would never vote for any person that used racist and sexist remarks to win. So I "HOPE" you are right when you see no "CHANGE" in the Obama VP pick. McCain 2008 Hillary 2012

Jodi and Hillary

davidL Wake up Jodi! Sure, a lot of us wanted Hillary, but she is not the one. Your "can't stand Obama" rant displays a total lack of understanding of the political system--whether we like it or not, how she lost, it is still a loss. We must not sacrifice this rare opportunity to govern, for the sake of the world. The Really Big Point that you are missing is that if you help elect McBush, you will be assuring that the next three appointments to the Supremes will be just like the Unholy Four that really are legislating from the bench. The Court will be ultra-hard right for the next 25 years, doing unthinkable damage to our country. Roe will be deep-sixed for sure. The Executive branch will continue to make its own rules based on "to hell with the constitution" (and the congress as well). Even if the congress is Democratic controled, McOld and his handlers will continue "signing statements", over-ruling laws passed by congress, and they will continue to appoint only those who swear allegance to the GOP. So Jodi, put the pout aside and do what you need to do for your country. Elect a president who will have a cooperative congress and who will sign the bills that they pass--and we must hope that they will be for the good of all mankind (not a PC word, either). We are all Democrats, regardless of our primary candidate, and we should act democratically!

Voting for McCain?

After voting for McCain, you must go directly to an Army or Marine recruiting center and sign up. Doing anything to help McCain win is CHOOSING to send other people overseas to fight and die. You should be willing to do the same thing you are CHOOSING to have other people do. No genuine feminist wants any mothers' child to be killed.

Bettysdad's hypocrisy

You've made variations of this argument several times, and it's gotten a little stale. If someone votes for McCain, or chooses not to vote for Obama, you demand they enlist in the military and/or get pregnant and carry the baby to term, based on the theory that failing to support Obama makes someone responsible for continuing the war and/or criminalizing abortion.

Yet ......

During the primary, you said you would never support Hillary Clinton if she was the Dem nominee. You've also said that if Obama chose her as his VP, you would no longer support him (i.e. "down come the yard signs", "put away your checkbook" etc.). So Mikey ............... if Obama chooses her, are you thinking Army, Air Force, or Marines?

Or are you a Navy-kind-of-guy?

BTW - The last line was a nice touch, but what would an advertising hack know about "genuine" ............ anything?

Use your brain, Jodi

Jodi, if rights for women are a paramount issue for you, how does it follow that you would vote for McCain? He's anti-choice (doesn't even know his own voting record and can't answer a question about insurance coverage for ED drugs vs contraception), is reported to have once called his wife a disgusting epithet in public, thinks Social Security is a rip off (but takes his own share monthly), and so on. Where's his positive record on women's issues?

Further, he has recently shown himself to be clueless on current and recent foreign events - 1. confusing the chronology of the Sunni Awakening and the "surge" in Iraq, 2. not realizing he made a huge gaffe by referring to the "Iraq-Pakistan" border, 3. called the war in Iraq the "first post-9/11 war" etc etc.

He knows almost nothing about how the economy works, had to let his economic "advisor" former Sen. Phil Gramm go for having called us all a bunch of whiners (how easy it is not to whine when you're very rich!). Of course, then we hear Gramm's really not gone after all.

Finally, what do you mean about Obama changing the Democratic Party primary rules? Clinton was the one who argued for doing an end run around them. Whether the rules were good or bad, where's the evidence that they were of Obama's making?

Colleen Clark
Cambridge, MA

let the last dog DIE already....

for the love of poop.... please let this be the LAST reference to Hillary on the ticket... it is over... pop the balloons... take a chill pill... give it a rest... this is right up there with news stories like..... GOP LIED.... BUSH NOT POPULAR.... please MOVE ON (with or without the dot com)

Picking Hillary guarantees a McCain victory

If Obama made the mistake of picking Hillary, the Press Whores would come out in full force against him. Just imagine what that shrew Whoreen Dowd would write in every one of her so-called columns in the Screw York Times. We know that with Hillary on the ticket, Whoreen would go into full kill mode on Obama and the venom wouldn't stop until her buddy Mc Cain got in.

baROCKIN the USA

I disagree.. if hillary was vp, McCain would have a better chance than if someone else were the vp. The clintons bring too much negative baggage to be winnable. Don't forget that many rethugs might cross over and vote for Obama only if hillary is NOT on the ticket.

One of the things that made

One of the things that made me question Clinton as a presidential candidate is that the Republican propaganda machine managed to turn her into some sort of liberal horror who elicited a lot of hate and anger from too many of those on the right. That propaganda machine, aimed at both Clintons, played a large role in many of the disappointments of Bill's presidency. Nevertheless, at the end of his second term, he had an approval rating of 65%, the highest of any modern president upon leaving office. Although the sainted Ronnie was quite close at 64%, one needs to compare how the two were treated in the MSM to see that in Clinton's case his high approval rating was in spite of the best efforts of the corporate press to impede his presidency and denigrate the man while in Reagan's case the rating wasn't even higher in spite of a media machine that strove mightily to portray him as the best president ever. So, I have to wonder where has all this chatter about Clinton "negative baggage" come from? If the Democratic party had come out fully in support of Hillary instead of undercutting her at every opportunity, it's quite likely that she would have indeed benefited from her husband's high approval ratings. Instead, the left turned on her and created an image of a conservative whore that was in many ways simply the mirror of what the right had done to her during Bill's presidency. This is not to say that there weren't problems with Hillary as a candidate for president. There were, but the attacks on her from the left were neither reasoned nor fair.

Unless...

....of course he is a better politician than you give him credit for and is pulling your chain.

pres McCain

Obama should be wiping the floor with McCain. Without Hillary it's a toss up. Bill from ct
