American Family Association Can't Stop Thinking About Naked Homosexuals Showering With Your Children

BUZZFLASH NEWS ANALYSIS
by Meg White

The American Family Association (AFA) kindly sent out an action alert yesterday to its concerned constituency warning about the coming Armageddon for our troops if the military policy banning gay people from openly serving in the military is repealed. It began thusly (emphasis mine):

Gays showering with straights? Absolutely.

If President Obama, congressional Democrats, and homosexual activists get their wish, your son or daughter may be forced to share military showers and barracks with active and open homosexuals who may very well view them with sexual interest.

Talk about creating a hostile work environment for people who practice normative sexuality!

Wait, stop the presses. Did I just read that President Obama is trying to force our troops to have gay sex in the shower?!

Of course, instead of imagining gay military porn as the AFA might want me to, I'm imagining the angry people who subscribe to this trash getting all riled up about those dirty homos and their sexy shower time after opening their inbox:

"No thank you, sir! I would much rather have my son or daughter continue to be forced to share military showers and barracks with repressed homosexuals! That's the only kind of naked homosexual I want to see.

...Er, not that I want to see naked homosexuals, of course. I mean, gross."

Who thinks this stuff up? Hopefully this will be a lesson to AFA President Tim Wildmon: Don't tell your supporters to imagine gay people, sculpted by military training, taking group showers. It makes them very uncomfortable, OK?

Back in the good ol' days, the American Family Association would just e-mail me about how I shouldn't eat at McDonald's because they support the gay agenda, or how Campbell Soup is bad for my morality. At most, I lost a couple pounds and saved myself the hassle of having to put together that IKEA desk because it was advertised as being used by a couple of lesbians. And everyone knows lesbians have cooties that are easily harbored in particle board.

But now that AFA founder Donald Wildmon passed the torch to his son Tim, things are getting downright smutty. I mean, it's not like Donald ever put it in my head that the lesbians in question were performing sexual acts on that IKEA desk! Little Timmy has taken it too far.

To take on Tim's "facts" about the military policy known as Don't Ask, Don't Tell (DADT) that are included in this e-mail would be too easy, so I'll just do one. The e-mail (which you can read online here if you're not lucky enough to be a subscriber to the always useful AFA "action alerts") brings up this point first:

As former General Colin Powell observed in 1993 (before bowing to pressures of political correctness), "...it would be prejudicial to good order and discipline to try to integrate gays and lesbians in the current military structure."

Yes, the note quotes Powell addressing the "current military structure" almost 17 years ago as its main argument. Yet Powell released a statement just last week saying that he's in full support of the effort to reexamine, and likely repeal, DADT. So I guess 1993 isn't what Powell would use to determine what's best for the actual "current military structure" in 2010.

If you want to hear more arguments from the AFA, check out their dedicated page for combating any change to DADT in the military. There you'll find links to the anti-equal opportunity group the Center for Military Readiness' page on DADT called "Problems With Gays in the Military" (though the URL is cleverly shortened to /problemgays, perhaps so they can later try and blame that whole war on terror thing on homosexuality, just like Hurricane Katrina).

But the appearance of factiness is just a vehicle to irritate the latent sexual confusion and reinforce the repression already in the psyches of the devotees of the religious right.

This fixation on the showering habits of buff soldiers may be an indication of certain discomforts on the part of conflicted conservatives, but that's not even the worst of it. The arguments against allowing gays to serve openly in the military should also be offensive to anyone who serves the country with dignity, regardless of sexual orientation. I don't want to believe that the proud men and women of the American military (yes, even the "straights" as Tim calls them) are so bigoted and blind that they can't function in the modern world without reacting violently to people who don't look or act like they do.

That's what we have military contractors for!

In all seriousness, if our troops can't get through the day without assaulting someone because they're different, they probably shouldn't have access to training that turns them into killing machines. But underneath that distrust of our soldiers which lies underneath a comical discomfort with one's own sexuality, is the most unfair reason of them all: that Gay people are sex maniacs who can't take a simple shower without violating their fellow soldiers.

John Cloud at Time Magazine remembered some of the bigotry that got us this dysfunctional military policy in the first place (emphasis mine):

But the specter of "forced intimacy" recalled the worst kind of anti-gay bigotry: the notion that gays can't control themselves or respect sexual privacy. [Former Sen. Sam] Nunn himself led reporters and colleagues on an infamous "field hearing" into the sleeping quarters and showers of ships and submarines in May 1993. It was demeaning and schoolboyishly prurient, but as icky demagoguery, the stunt worked brilliantly...

A Zogby poll conducted for the Palm Center in 2006... which surveyed 545 military personnel who have served in Iraq or Afghanistan, found that only 37% of the respondents opposed openly gay military service. More important, of the 125 survey respondents who knew for sure that at least one person in their unit was gay or lesbian, 64% said it had "no impact" on the unit's morale. Three-quarters of the total sample said they were "comfortable" in the presence of gays and lesbians. One assumes that, despite Senator Nunn's fears, they had not been groped in the shower.

I suppose I shouldn't be surprised that uptight conservatives such as AFA members would want DADT to continue on as before. After all, they're clearly more comfortable in a world filled with people who look just like they do. So a law that makes sure that everyone is just as sexually repressed as they are must be a mighty comforting thought.

At least it appears to be more comforting to them than the thought of an orgy in a military shower.

Maybe.

All the usual ranting about how bad the AFA, and those who subscribe to the same line of thought, is a tired and intellectually ignorant stand to take. Those of us who have decided to follow God’s Word don’t hate homosexuals. That “lifestyle” is a sin, not just according to Christianity but also Judaism and Islam. The people I have heard speak on the topic who have left that lifestyle describe it as a “sex addiction.” I have heard homosexuals say things like “Of course I was born this way, nobody would choose to live like this.” Actually, people live “like this” through all sorts of addictions. The addict will put up with almost anything to get their fix. And yes I have some experience in addictions myself. As a recovering addict, I know that any drug has the potential to get its hooks back into me. I don’t drink alcohol (the most abused drug in the world) or smoke. I don’t want anything to have control of me other than my Creator.  Then there is the argument that anyone who sees the gay lifestyle as wrong is automatically gay. Really? That’s the argument you want to promote? WOW! I’m not against gays being in the military because gays are a threat to heterosexuals. I am against people demanding that I accept their sin and then they tell me to shut up. Sorry that isn’t going to happen.

"Those of us..."

"... who have decided to follow God's Word"?  Really?  Which "God's Word" is that?  Is that the God of Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Buddha, Quakers, or one of hundreds of other religions?  Assuming you mean Christian, why do you say that "God's Word" is that homosexuality is a sin?  Well, .... there is that whole thing in Leviticus: "You shall not lie with a male as with a woman. It is an abomination." (Leviticus 18:22) and . . . "If a man lies with a male as he lies with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination. They shall surely be put to death. Their blood shall be upon them." (Leviticus 20:13).  Wow, .... sounds pretty clear cut, huh?  Strange, considering how there are so many Christian denominations that do not consider homosexuality to be a sin, even including homosexuals as members of their clergy.

Then there's the hypocrisy factor.  Still believe in a literal reading of Leviticus?  Wow, ... I hope you don't do any of the other things that are described as sins or "abominations" in Leviticus:  Cursing at your mother or father?  You should be put to death.  Have sex with a woman during her period?  You both should be exiled.  Owning slaves?  Actually, that's okay.  Cutting your hair on the side of your head or trimming your beard?  Nope, not allowed.  Eating pork, mixing seeds from two plants in the same field, or wearing clothing with blended materials?  Sorry.  Eating shrimp, lobster or other shellfish?  Sorry, that's also an "abomination".  Should we even get into all of the other "sins" and "abominations" described in the other books of the bible?

Didn't think so.

BTW - I am not against religious wackjobs.  I am against people demanding that I accept their particular religious fairytales, that those fairytales be incorporated into law/public policies and used as a bsis to discrimate against others, and that I accept their religious fairytales and then tell me to shut up.  Sorry, ...

... that just isn't going to happen.

Again more of the same tired

Again more of the same tired rant. Any church that accepts homosexuals as "Clergy" or anything else is not a Christian church. Every one practices a religion, even atheists. Christ said that He didn’t come to negate the law but to fulfill it. We as believers that Yeshua is the Messiah are not under the Mosaic Law. We are grafted in by grace, and if you read my post it isn’t just Christianity that condemns homosexuality the three major religions do as well as most other religions. God made man and woman for a reason. People like you who are full of hate and intolerance towards people who follow Christ are the hypocrites. You do exactly what you say you hate. Mankind hasn’t procreated by homosexuality but by the process that God designed. If you don’t like policies being put in place that you disagree with is it because you think you are the ultimate authority? Every law that is in place is someone’s “morals” being legislated. So you can legislate morality, it’s done every day. You and those like you don’t mind pushing humanism (probably your religion) on everyone else yet you’re on your soap box bashing at will anyone who disagrees with you…how progressive!

Did you notice ...

... you didn't address any of my points?  Just different arguments, all made with straw.  Do you think that makes the real reason you can't answer them less obvious?  Why is it that - according to you - "God's Word" means homosexuality is a sin?  Is it because of the literal interpretation of Leviticus?  Okay, .... So you don't wear any mixed fiber clothing?  You don't eat pork or shellfish?  You don't cut your hair on the sides or trim your beard?  You think cursing your parents should mean the death penalty?  You believe in slave ownership?  Because ALL of those are literal readings of Leviticus.

BTW - "Any church that accepts homosexuals as Clergy or anything else is not a Christian Church"?  Really?  Strange, considering that so many congregations with so many denominations do accept homosexuals as members and/or clergy.  This includes the: Anglican Church, Baptist Church, Episcopal Church,Lutheran, Methodist, MCC, Moravian, New Apostolic Church, Presbyterian, United Reformed Church, Quaker, Old Catholic Church, Reformed Catholic Church, Unitarian Universalist, United Church of Christ .... and on, and on ... and these are just some of the Christian Churches that accept homosexual members and/or clergy.  Many major branches of Judaism also accept homosexual and do not condemn homosexuality as a sin, including Reconstructionist Judaism and Reform Judaism - the largest Jewish denomination in America.

Wow .... wouldn't they be surprised to find out that they are "not Christian Churches(/Jewish Temples)" because some anonymous, uneducated bufoon on a blog says so.  Or, ...

... they'd just laugh at his blatantly sanctimonious, hypocritical "argument".

Heh, heh, heh ...

BBTW - I'm not "pushing humanism" on anybody, but being progressive and tolerant doesn't mean you have to remain silent about the bigotry and intolerance of so-called "Christian" homophobes.

Just the opposite, in fact.

Rabid homophobes are closet cases

I've read a couple of studies in the past that suggested rabid homophobes, like the members/leaders of AFA, have issues with THEIR sexuality and that's why they want to suppress gays.  Allowing homosexuality to be normalized is a personal threat to THEIR identity and would go against everything they've been taught.

Personally, I caught the gay when I was 5 or 6 years old.  I didn't know what it was then but I knew I was different.  I successfully showered with straight guys in Jr High, High School, College, at church camp, at the gym, etc. and have never considered having sex with a straight OR gay man in a public shower.  Public sex, gay or straight, is kind of creepy. Trust me, a queen showering with a bunch of straight guys is not thinking of sex.  We're more worried about getting attacked by straight guys.

Maybe the AFA people get their weird ideas from watching too much gay porn.  The AFA people would be much happier if they would just come out of the closet and then they could live happy, normal lives...like the rest of us.

Hi, all!!

I've asked this before, and I ask it again: What are the homophobes afraid of?  They're clearly terrified, but I'm not sure what they think gays are going to do to them.

My observation has been that the heteros are causing all the problems in the military.  Military men are assaulting women, not other men.  I haven't heard the AFA denounce that.

What's needed is leadership.  Jim Fisher (who used to write for the Kansas City Star - and maybe still does) spoke of joining the Marines shortly after President Truman integrated the armed services.  Their DI pointed out that there were both blacks and whites in their unit, and said, "You will get along."  They did.  The leadership needs to make it perfectly clear - and strictly enforce - that harassment of any kind, against anybody, gay or straight, will not be tolerated.  As the Joint Chiefs chairman said before Congress, everybody in the military has served with homosexuals, and the world has not come to an end.

I ask yet again: What are the homophobes so afraid of?

DADT AND ITS SUPPORTERS

http://TheHarvView.blogspot.com

I really believe we give too much space to hate groups, to the right wing zealots, to conservatives idealogs and the likes of Sarah Palin.

By talking about these people, groups, and Fox news hosts, we give them free publicity and even, by virtue of this publicity, give some form of defacto status to their outrageous positions.  Ask any headline seeking actor that any publicity keeps them in the limelight.

But. it is a two sided sword and if we let them rant as Germans let Hitler rant, we also do a disservice to our country.

Personally, if I were gay and thought of miliatary service under any policy other than total equality, I would stay away and the result would be that all straight soldiers would die and no gays.  If it were totally equal, I would serve my country to the best of my ability and die if that were in the cards.

All my blogs: http://TheHarvView.blogspot.com

Let these trash go into the trash

Poor, poor babies!

I suspect what the AFA most fears is that, if DADT is repealed (which anyone who believes that God creates humans can't help but support), they and their Neandrathal attidues will go the way of the KKK after the military was integrated and civil rights advances of the 60s were enacted, not to mention the way of the John Birch Society after Communism fell.

I can only hope they're correct in that fear - that the AFA will soon be relegated to the dumpster of history (except for a few fringe hangers on).

So AFA's worried about showering with gays!

blazerdad

Let's see now, my son is graduating high school in May.  Graduating from a high school that has had an open, and tolerant policy towards gay's and an active gay community.  He has studied with, played along side of, and showered with gay's since the first day in high school.  He joins the military in June.  Oh my God!!!!!!

Contagious disease... be afraid! BE VERY AFRAID!

So the homosexuality is a contagious disease. Right? Obviously, everybody at AFA thinks so. Maybe (oh, my imagination goes wild!) they did take a shower with a gay person, and they caught GAY! Or they shook hands with a gay person, and they caught GAY! Everybody knows, that if you sleep with a gay person in the same room, tent, etc., you will catch GAY! Homosexuality is more contagious than the swine flu itself, and spreads much faster. Being in the very presence of a gay person may cause you to catch GAY!

American Family Association members either caught GAY somewhere, or maybe they are all closet homosexuals, trying to keep it in the closet. Why don't they just come out and tell the world: we're gay, and we need you to accept us for what/who we are. Dumbasses, redneck knuckledraggers, shame on you. You can't just catch GAY. You have to be born that way.

Will someone tell them the scientific fact? Or they won't believe it anyway, because it ain't in the bible.

Or maybe they don't read the bible right. Shame on the sleazy bastards.
