Death Panel Update: Sarah Palin, Meet My Pal Merriam Webster

Scroll down for update.

On Wednesday night concerned citizen Sarah Palin posted a note on her Facebook page whining that President Obama "made light" of her Say It Ain't So, Sarah! Palin Uses Government Resources to Publicize Her Painconcerns that the government was going to come to Wasilla and kill her baby and parents.

Palin had said last week (via Facebook again, which is almost as good as the Alaska governor's home page) that the healthcare reform bill making its way through Congress contained a provision requiring elderly and disabled people to be put out of their misery by government "death panels." Though her conspiracy theory has been roundly debunked as twisting the increased availability of long-term care counseling into a horrific nightmare, she insisted that "it's misleading for the president to describe this section as an entirely voluntary provision."

Actually, it's misleading to characterize it any other way, and Palin's own words expose her irresponsible fear mongering as complete falsehood. She continues (emphasis mine):

Section 1233 authorizes advanced care planning consultations for senior citizens on Medicare every five years, and more often "if there is a significant change in the health condition of the individual ... or upon admission to a skilled nursing facility, a long-term care facility... or a hospice program." [3] During those consultations, practitioners must explain "the continuum of end-of-life services and supports available, including palliative care and hospice," and the government benefits available to pay for such services. [4]

Now put this in context. These consultations are authorized whenever a Medicare recipient's health changes significantly or when they enter a nursing home, and they are part of a bill whose stated purpose is "to reduce the growth in health care spending." [5] Is it any wonder that senior citizens might view such consultations as attempts to convince them to help reduce health care costs by accepting minimal end-of-life care?

In case you were wondering, the primary definition of the word "authorize" (used twice by Palin in the excerpt above to try to make this thing sound like a mandate) is "to give official approval to or permission for." Basically, the provision allows Medicare patients to have this service (which people already utilize on their own) paid for by the government.

Furthermore, can someone tell me whether Palin is actually arguing that doctors (or anyone else for that matter) would be able to "convince" senior citizens to die for the sake of the budget? Seriously?

So Sarah, from now on if you're going to make stuff up, at least have the respect for your audience to assume they have a working knowledge of the English language, or at least have access to a dictionary.

UPDATE: Think Progress is reporting that as governor Palin endorsed the same basic end-of-life counseling that she now refers to as "death panels." Too bad we already have our GOP hypocrite for this week!

Lying to people about end-of-life consultation? That's low. That's really, really low. But "shame" is not a word these people recognize anymore.

MAH HAT FOR PALIN KNOW NO BOUNDS

This just cheeses me off to no end. I just had a grandmother pass away, and since she had Tricare the BIG BAD GUMMINT presumably paid for her hospice. Who did not come in and hold a pillow over her face. Far from it; they gave her excellent care in her last days. Palin and these pshitts who are lying about this should be kicked in the butt repeatedly. They're working people into a frenzy over their very lives, and when people are fighting for their lives they can do all kinds of irrational, stupid, extreme things. About the only consolation is, that when all their anti-government scaremongering turns around to bite them the way it did in 1995, Palin and the GOP cretins who did this will be just as in the crosshairs as any Democrat.

Fercryinoutloud, people!

It just means that Medicare, or whatever other insurance you have, has to pay for you to get assistance in writing a living will to document what you want to happen if you become incapacitated. That's it. End of story. Sheesh!

Palin, Gingrich and Grassley are lying s.o.b.s

And they are counting on the fact that their constituencies are either too lazy or too stupid to look up the fact that section 1233 was put into the health care reform bill by Georgia Republican US Senator Johnny Isakson. In Sarah Palin's case I think it is safe to say she reflects her constituency, being both lazy and stupid.

In Gingrich and Grassley's cases they know the truth and are just lying, but the M$M won't fact check them.

Right now, however, I'm so disgusted with my fellow citizens that I think they will get exactly what they deserve in the way of health care reform: Nothing.

Paraphrasing the title of a book written by Jimmy Carter, America has government as good and as intelligence as its people. And that ain't nothing to be proud of.

stupid constituencies

ETS, you couldn't be more right. At the moment, I am discouraged as I witness reports in the NY Times, for example, stating that 3 high placed White House aides were "blindsided" by the Republican orchestrated month of rage. I am discouraged as I hear Democrats crumpling on the "death panels". By the time this month is over, Democrats are likely to return to Washington determined to entirely and completely defeat ANY health care reform, with the exception of giving the drug companies even more money than they are making right now. Obama hasn't made many mistakes in his career, but THIS ONE is huge. Unprepared, naive, uncommitted. We will have NO meaningful health care reform this time around. In fact, all we will have is less care, higher premiums, more death. And, of course, all the politicians will run on reforming health care come 2010 and 2012.

Nutcase Palin Needs Counseling

This nutcase is in dire need of reality therapy. Her perceptions of reality are clouded by faux post partem depression, pre-menopausal mental troubles, delusions of grandeur, marital problems or a combination of all of the above. She lacks credibility. She lacks character. She is a pretty package disguising a treasonous, lie spewing, hater who finds pleasure in igniting gullible believers who have not accepted the fact the Barack Obama and the Dems won the last election. No thanks to John McCain for opening Palindora's Box!

But that's not the audience she's talking to!
