GOP Spends Nearly $2 Million on Norm Coleman, and Gets Al Franken

A BUZZFLASH NEWS ANALYSIS
by Rebecca Freitag

The timespan covered all four seasons and almost eight months -- the Norm Coleman-Al Franken circus of recounts. We may be at the end. The Minnesota Supreme Court ruled 5-0, declaring Al Franken the winner in his contested U.S. Senate race against Norm Coleman.

The justices said Coleman's appeal had "not shown that the trial court's findings of fact are clearly erroneous or that the court committed an error of law or abused its discretion."

Now that the courts have decided, it would seem that the GOP has wasted close to $2 million trying to fight the possibility of a Democratic majority in the Senate. National Republican Senatorial Committee Chair Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) said that he didn't think anything was wrong with the GOP funding Coleman's eternal quest for a recount, and it wouldn't affect the 2010 elections.

The Republican National Committee and fellow GOP Senators have given Coleman hundreds of thousands of dollars to challenge Franken. In the past three months, the National Republican Senatorial Committee has also given him more than $1 million for legal expenses. The Federal Election Commission gave Coleman permission last week to use campaign funds in two separate legal battles he is involved in outside of the recount.

Coleman still has the opportunity to challenge Franken on the federal level. However, Gov.Tim Pawlenty (R-MN) said recently that he will seat the winner of this latest case, because if he delayed the case any longer it would be "dereliction of duty."

If Coleman wants to challenge Franken on a federal level though, the GOP will need to seriously consider just telling him no. While most campaigns are beginning fundraising for 2010 elections, this race is still from 2008. In the case that the GOP continues funding this nonsensical fight, their future dims with each passing day. With a new GOP scandal popping up every week involving their presidential hopefuls, the GOP is melting faster than a snowball in the Sahara, so they need all the help they can get.

Going farther in this 2008 race would further the Democrats chances of winning other races in 2010. The Republicans don't need more negative publicity, and the GOP image is being tarnished by a lot of things right now. They're going to need as many resources as they can get, and wasting money on a lost race would be a lost cause.

So is this the end of the Franken-Coleman battle? Will the Democrats finally get to 60 bodies in the Senate? Gov. Pawlenty, the pen is in your hands.

filibuster-proof is not what we need

What we need is cowardice-proof majority and we ain't there yet.

ITS ABOUT TIME.

We are still at 58 votes--somewhat. Sen's Bird, and Kennedy have health issues that may affect future votes. But still, it is a welcomed relief to the BS of the Party of Greeds obstruction threats, and a chance for us to clean up the garbage left over from Bushes days. Wish Al could rub his nose in it. As for health care, I think it may add fuel to Single-Payer debate--interestingly, Al will be on the Health, Edu, and Labor Committee and Judiciary. I hope he is allowed to provide input on this and shut-up the GOP whinners whose only talent is to complain and blame someone else. I'm sure Bill O' must not be having a good day. And I truly hope Al--I mean Senator Franken provides his own creativity in solving problems to major issues in the sprit of what Paul Wellstone believed. Good Luck Senator Franken. Get used to be addressed as Senator. You earned it.

That $2 million the GOP

That $2 million the GOP figures, is a small investment if it helps them to steal hundreds of billions for them and their super wealthy collaborators. ............................... WE ARE THE GOVERNMENT..WE THE PEOPLE!...NOT the body politic in D.C., NOT MEGA-CORPORATIONS and NOT the MSM.. We are THEIR Leaders, not the other way around!

I hope Senator Franken uses

I hope Senator Franken uses his quit wit and his great understanding of human nature, to shame the blue dog DINO's and totally embarass the brain dead greedy rescumlicans into passing legislation that reflects what We the People need. Not the now common place, of bending over for, or the sucking of, buttholes of the super rich for campaign bribes that insure or create laws that only help to make them all richer. That includes the global company giants, that no longer care about the security or welfare of the United States but use our military (and half of our taxes) to subdue third world nations into forfeiting their resources. Congratulations Senator Al Franken!!! This is one more barrier removed from the slimy, disgusting and unapologetic stalling maneuvers that are being used by the GOP to block desperately needed legislation. They have NO ideas to help this nation move forward so their only plan is to delay, delay, delay by using lies and divisiveness. .............................................................. ................................... WE ARE THE GOVERNMENT..WE THE PEOPLE!...NOT the body politic in D.C., NOT MEGA-CORPORATIONS and definitely NOT the MSM.. We are THEIR Leaders, not the other way around!

Repub politicians need Stewart Smally Affirmations

I'm white enough.
I'm privileged enough.
And gosh darn it,
lobbyists like me!

In My Data Processing days when analyzing a new system...

we had to do a Cost Benefit Analysis. Seems the Republicans don't know how to do this. Thanks Repugs for spending Two Million Dollars on a losing candidate!!

I'll believe it when I see it

When Sen. Franken is at quorum call. The rethugs must be the sorest losers of all time. They're just LOSERS, period.

It Really Does Not Matter

I am very happy that Franken has finally been deemed the winner. However, this really will not bring progressive legislative victories. The problem is still with the Dems themselves. At least 6 to 8 are DINOs, and many more are still enthralled with the money corporate interests bestow upon those who cooperate.
