Faith or Doubt -- Obama's Base Second Guessing

A BUZZFLASH NEWS ANALYSIS
by Christine Bowman

A friend of BuzzFlash wrote to us today:

I have a horrible "down" feeling. I was so happy that Obama won, and now, the elation is gone. I don't like the looks of things at all. They just keep looking worse. I thought, well, VP, hmm, okay, not my pick, but okay, then, Emanuel, hmmmmmm, well maybe needed. Now ... humph, what the hell is going on?

As information about prospective Obama administration appointments dribbles out, has the thrill of the campaign been replaced by the fear of dashed hopes? Obama and his transition team may need to revive a Sixties slogan quickly -- "Keep the Faith, Baby" -- and bolster morale among his many waiting supporters before he starts losing them. Two and a half weeks out from election day, news junkies and political addicts are getting impatient and reverting to their worst fears.

Many see Obama, their anti-war candidate, as already caving in to the hawks. Some dread a general shift to the Clintonian/DLC "center," which feels like milquetoast. Others don't like the style or track record of one or another of Obama's advisors. And media outlets just need something to write about in the post-election news vacuum.

It's hard to be in limbo. This writer, while impatient, remains optimistic.

Obama and his team spent two years and then some building a movement. He intends to bring enduring change, in contrast to Bill Clinton's era of "centrist" shift. Obama means to be transformative -- a word that was thrown back at him during the primaries, when he pointed out that President Reagan, not President Clinton, had done just that. Now is Obama's time to reverse a 25- or 30-year trend and lead the country away from fiscal, foreign policy, and social conservatism.

As for specific appointments and advisors, almost any "experienced" Democrat at this point worked in or with the Clinton administration (maybe a few worked for Carter or outside of DC). If the "experience Democrats" want to survive as Democrats, they'll have to get with the new Obama program. Obama is reeling them in one by one, finding ways to use each one's expertise, but he also can jettison any who don't help move the agenda forward. Obama aims to reduce some of the noise and conflict by creating a big tent. He's trying to put an end to the idealogues and get everyone else working together.

Our great country came close to being flushed down the toilet. The renegade right wing took over key roles in the Executive (e.g., Dick Cheney), the Congress (Tom DeLay), and the Judiciary (Antonin Scalia) and promoted the disastrous policies that brought us here. The neocons envisioned America as an unfettered empire yet dreamed of drowning our weakened federal government in the bathtub -- so Americans are all in for a rough ride.

The silver lining to the big black cloud (apologies, but my plumbing metaphor has run its course) is that because our problems are so dire, most people now are willing to consider new ideas.

President-elect Obama has progressive values and integrity, and he's very strategic.  He wants to build the middle class back up. He's anti-fear. And as he creates his upcoming administration, he is being very inclusive. That's different from conciliatory, a point his base should keep in mind, if only for our own sanity.

No Surprises with Obama Appointments

Obama's appointments should not come as a surprise. His economic advisors before the election were overwhelmingly, or perhaps entirely, neoliberals. He voted against starting the Iraq War but then voted the for funding to keep it going. Is Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State inconsistent with his support for the war? Some say his focus will be domestic, but there will be no funds for a domestic agenda if he caves to the neocons and continues a reckless path in the Middle East. His sorry performance before AIPAC indicates he already has. I have a bumper sticker for those interested: Obummer

Reality

Okay, those the left are upset. Those the right are upset. That must mean we elected the right guy. Look, the fact is is that Obama has alwasys been a consensus builder and a moderate. If you wanted to lose the election, then the Dems should have nominated Dennis Kucinich. The USA is not a liberal country, nor is it conservative. The majority of Americans I am pleased to say, seem to be pragmatic moderates who vote with their pocket books. Ideologues have no place in government and the left wing nuts scare me as much as the right ones do. They all want to take away some part of our Freedoms. Even if those on the right are far scarier than those on the left. America needs a President who governs down the center and slightyly to the left. That is what we got with Obama. So please cut the guy some slack. And BTW HRC is awesome choice for the SOS. HEr and the big dog can get some shit done with our allies.

Toxic Labeling

HRC and her straying hound hubby are hardly moderates, and some of the other choices Obama is making for his Cabinet don't thrill me with confidence that moderation is going to be the theme of the new administration.

The way things are looking to me, America has reached a point where the elites (which include the Clintons, or Bush I wouldn't be so chummy with them) either have to toss We, the People a few crumbs so that we will quiet down and not rage against the profit machine, or else declare "Let them eat cake!" and bring on the open class war. In other words, "moderation" is a label describing a time when the thumbscrews are loosened a bit so as to reduce the clamor from the rabble. The wealthy want a bit of time to digest the feast they have just concluded and don't want to have to run for their lives and have to toss it all away to do so.

I suspect that was why Obama was allowed to win the election. If he can keep us on a string of hoping for improvement in our lives without having to really deliver anything, he then will have a chance at running for re-election and cashing in on the perquisites available to the most powerful nuclear terrorist on Earth. They just might, a la Lyndon Johnson, even allow him to pass some legislation which might actually accomplish some good in the nation (see: Voting Rights Act of 1965) even if the cost is higher than "conservatives" might want to pay.

So to my fellow progressives, let hope die lie the auto industry should, and take up the cause of fighting for what you want. It's the only way you will get it. It isn't going to be handed to you wrapped up like a Christmas present. You are far too impoverished to really expect that sort of treatment!

OMG, a voice of reason on BF!

Like finding a golden ticket in a Wonka bar.

Christmas came early !!!

OMG people! I thought this article would be coming 6-12 months after the inauguration, not two weeks after the election! Toooooooo funny .......... seriously.

Hate to tell you, but all this drama is not being caused by HC, it's being caused by Obama and (more so) a bunch of his weak-kneed supporters. None of this would be happening if he hadn't selected her as SOS, and the choice was entirely his decision.

What's particularly funny to watch, however, are a bunch of his disillusioned supporters gnashing their teeth and crying about this decision. They seem to fall into two primary camps:

1) The "true progressives" - People that, for whatever reason, believed that Obama was a "true progressive" - someone that would, once elected, reject all the positions of that nasty DLC and steer the ship of state hard to port (left). After all, he has a pretty liberal voting record and he didn't vote for the AUMF, right (of course, he didn't have to vote at all)? And the stuff about "hope", "change", and "a new kind of politics" sounds pretty good, right? Only they only heard what they wanted to hear. They ignored conflicting campaign talk (all campaigns do it) that sounded moderate or even (gasp!) conservative. They ignored Obama when he specifically said he was a moderate and even conservative on some issues. FISA? Offshore drilling? A conservative economic advisory team? Expanding the 2nd Amendment to individuals? Expanding Bush's "faith-based" government? More troops in Afghanistan? Expanding the armed forces? Oh, come on! We know what he really means.

Apparently not.

2) The CDS Clinton-haters - These are the whackjobs who would vote for Hitler before voting for a Clinton (slight hyperbole). They're either the young supporters who are new to politics and "can't believe what a nasty campaign that woman ran!", or they're still pissed at Bill for duping them the first time around. They're angry that Bill was a mainstream Democrat and didn't deliver a hard-left agenda that they now expect from Obama. Never mind that the country was not ready for that kind of agenda at the time (probably not even now). Never mind that he had to deal with a closely divided or Republican-controlled Congress. "Too bad! He's a DLC, Repug-lite, blah, blah, blah .... and Hillary's just like him!" The CDS haters could deal with Obama's moderate talk, but choosing her as SOS is too much! They thought that "change" meant a change from Bush and the Clintons. "I can't understand it! I feel, duped. I feel like a fool! I feel ............ BETRAYED!!!"

Get used to it.

Of course, there are the vast majority of Obama supporters, who neither hate the Clintons, nor expect Obama to be anything but a moderate liberal. At most, they're holding out hope that Obama will be a "true-prog", but will be satisfied with a moderate after 8 years of Bush. They're sitting back in disbelief as the "true progressives" and the CDS haters begin to fall away just two weeks after the election. It was bound to happen. The CDS haters were already complaining about his selection of experienced "Clintonistas", although they might have hung in there if he hadn't chosen HER for his cabinet. The "true-progs" would have (and will) gradually fallen away as Obama built a moderate record over the next few years and (just like Bill) signed legislation that is unforgiveably moderate. Then they'll complain about how they were duped, blah, blah, blah, and start talking about the need for a "truly progressive" third party.

But cheer up ...... all is not lost! The good news is that the "true-progs" and CDS haters, while very vocal on the web, are only a tiny fraction of mainstream Democrats that Obama needs to get his agenda passed. Heck, only 12% of Dems don't want Hillary as SOS, and that includes some of her supporters who would prefer her to stay in the Senate.

The better news (as evidenced by the past couple of weeks) is that the "true-progs" and the CDS haters will continue to whine and gnash their teeth for (at least) the next four years. Most of them will be popping Prozac like M&Ms while Hillary's being sworn in.

It's like Christmas came early this year, and it's the gift that keeps on giving, and giving, and giving ...!!!

my take

We know the better man won. This is good in itself. The progressive part may come with time. Progressives know what it is to wait. We are not there yet, BUT the telling will come when that first justice leaves the supreme court. I think Obama will look left at that time and correct the course of this country. Maybe he will even have the opporttunity to get two lefties on board. This will be a gradual turn as much as we would like to see it be otherwise but in 8 years we may be a lot happier. I'm banking on Bama being the president we have been waiting for for a looong time.

The message is

Don't expect anything different from Obama. He is not what the "Progressives" voted into office. Candidate Obama is not going to be President Obama. Sorry folks your fucked again.

Thanks, Karl...

We'll keep that under advisement...

From across the Sea

I'm going on a pertinent tangent:

International news coverage indicates a major 'media buzz' about this 'potential conflict of interest' ("CoI") that 'the Clintons have', and how the press is all over Bill to explain what he's going to do, as to his professional engagements, while Hillary (if nominated&accepting) becomes Sec'y of State?

Excuse me?

How is this anything but another great example of media bias in the US press?

There's already been twenty times as much coverage on this issue, in three days, as there was in 2000/2001, when Bush the Elder, via James Baker III (aka The Most Dangerous Man in America) and Scalia, got his son into the White House, while a senior official in Carlyle Group (with the Bin Ladens)... thus in a position to sell more Death Toys (contracts worth Millions, Billions?) to the US military, and abroad, as a totally inacceptable, perfect CoI!

If, in fact, you want a legal definition of CoI, Bush-Bush is the best:

conflict of interest
n. a situation in which a person has a duty to more than one person or organization, but cannot do justice to the actual or potentially adverse interests of both parties. This includes when an individual's personal interests or concerns are inconsistent with the best for a customer, or when a public official's personal interests are contrary to his/her loyalty to public business. An attorney, an accountant, a business adviser or realtor cannot represent two parties in a dispute and must avoid even the appearance of conflict. He/she may not join with a client in business without making full disclosure of his/her potential conflicts, he/she must avoid commingling funds with the client, and never, never take a position adverse to the customer.

I think Obama has just won 'the prize' and is now finding what it really is 'behind Door N° Three',

A satirical French publication noted some irony, last week:
"The WORST job in America, given to a black guy."

(Don't flame me please. They were highly admirative of US voters for 'overcoming racial history', and admiring his competence in campaigning, and adoring 'America returning to its senses', etc. ... think of it more as if David Letterman had said it! that would be the 'right context')

All in all: Obama, as are we all, is finding out daily that we haven't found the bottom of the RepubliCULT destruction of America; Bush is firing whistleblowers in Agencies everywhere, and replacing them with RepubliCULT shills... the damage to come makes Jan. 20 the only hope we may have...

Devil's Bargain

Why can't centrists get it that the liberal agenda is not a personal, selfish agenda? What we're talking about is peace, human rights, civil rights, justice. So much of politics is geared for the narrowest of self interest. And now with the economic crisis, even fewer will turn their attention to the big picture.

For a perfect summary of the big picture, download the Nov. 21 Democracynow.org broadcast in which Amy Goodman interviews Bishop Desmond Tutu.

Tutu is as delighted as are we all that we're done with Bush and on to our black President and Hope. Then he goes on in the course of the interview to summarize what progressives (the mainstream in more mature countries) want:

Terrorists tried in the International Court, instead of brainless bombing of countries where they may or may not be "smoked out."

An end to the agony that is Gaza, i.e. restraints on Israel's merciless aggression.
Tutu says this in itself would drastically alter our image in the Muslim world and remove the reason for so much animus against us.

An end to political prisons, torture, renditions, and all the crimes against humanity wrought by the Bush Administration.

Apologies and reparations to the Iraqis.

So what do we get from Obama? Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State? That choice is an outrage, a slap in the face, an evil wind bearing foul odors of backdoor deals. Is this the only way Obama could be elected? Is Obama so desperately beholden to the Clintons?

Hillary ran a disgusting, stinking, ugly, shrill campaign. The last thing I would call her is diplomatic. I see belligerence, ruthlessness, amorality. She voted for the war then blamed that abominable judgment on "bad intelligence". Nonsense. That claim, if it is to be believed, makes her either utterly stupid or utterly corrupt. I certainly don't have all the information she gets, but I knew the Iraq invasion was unjustified.

Hillary claims to be a child advocate, but she voted in support of cluster bombs which are especially noxious weapons that have killed and maimed thousands of children. She was caught in numerous lies of convenience and self-justification during her campaign.

We have witnessed eight years of killing and aggression and war and torture. Change should be change. I do not want a "centrist" government which is far right by any civilized standards.I want a government that understands peace and international cooperation.I wish we could have Dennis Kucinich or Russ Feingold leading us. Why is basic humanity so hard for most politicans and the public to comprehend? Must they all look tough and bomb a few helpless countries to prove it?

My dread is that we'll have more of the same ugly foreign policy, but cloaked with new rhetoric, and perhaps progress on other fronts such as alternative energy. The Obama years will look better than the Bush years, and they will indeed be better in many important ways.

But why throw our foreign diplomacy to the dogs?

Some of us can laugh. Jon Stewart's Nov. 18 "Obama's Team of Rivals" is hilarious satire on the emerging Cabinet.

But the reality isn't funny at all.
I could accept Hillary as Secretary of Health and Human Services. But by putting her where she is, Obama tells me peace is not a priority, and I begin to wonder how committed he is to human rights. In other words, by making this choice, he brings himself into serious question.

As I keep writing to his transition website: please, please, prove me wrong.

You said it well

I couldn't agree more. And I have to get this off my chest, although this is not exactly on topic: She bleats that she made "18 million cracks on the glass ceiling" Hello? She was just a candidate. She didn't overcome anything and didn't crack anything. Margaret Thatcher, Golda Mier, women governors, female heads of huge corporations, female scientists, astronauts and thousands of other accomplished women broke the glass ceiling. Benazir Bhutto and Indira Ghandi gave their lives to serve their countries-----these are women of real courage who don't have to lie about being under the gun in Bosnia in order to look tough or brave.

Children shouldn't be allowed to vote

So if you're a female head of state, governor, head of a corp., scientist, astronaut, you "broke the (glass) ceiling", but if you're only a woman who's graduated from Yale Law School, a US Senator, the first woman to have a serious chance at becoming a major party candidate for POTUS, and the canididate who received the most votes of ANY Democratic primary candidate ever, you "didn't overcome or crack anything".

The sheer idiocy of that statement should win you an award.

The only one doing any "bleating" is you and the other CDS nuts who are suddenly crying about being betrayed and now say they would take their vote back.

Sometimes a Voter IQ Test seems like such a good idea.

BTW - By the same logic, if the roles were reversed, and Hillary eaked out the nomination over Obama, would you be saying Obama "didn't overcome or crack anything"?

Keep writing ....

I'm sure that'll do it.

President Barack Hussein Obama Has To Do It His Way

"Based on?" "That's why we elected him." "Where do we fit in?" "Yes we can." "Now what sort of world?" "It's up to us."

Which Makes His Way?

Our way

The Proof Is In The Backers

It's way too early to say whether Obama has integrity or progressive values. His past track record doesn't speak well of him, but to give him the benefit of the doubt for now, let's call it pragmatism designed to keep him viable pending the election.

As Obama takes power away from the Terrible Tyro of Connecticut/Texas, it will quickly become evident who is benefiting from the actions of the Obama administration. If it isn't the people of this nation, then Heaven help the man. The people will be calling for his head, and returning to the Republicans as the focus of their political expression.

I trust the man

Obama displayed amazing gravitas throughout the campaign from day one to Election Day. No matter how vicious the attacks against him got he was never aggravated. He stayed calm. He is a very intelligent man and he is determined to be a good president. He is appointing who he feels is the most qualified for these posts.

And you know what I trust the man, because of how steady he was during the campaign even during the debate about the bailout when McCain was flailing all over the place like a fish out of water. It is ironic in a way McCain talked about having a steady hand on the tiller, but it was Obama who actually had the steady hand, while McCain appeared to abandon ship as his campaign sunk around him, courtesy Sarah Palin. Obama ran a great campaign from day one, with brilliant tactics and strategy, few leaks, and many other things including a great campaign finance team.

And he reminds me of Lincoln frequently. He is not the most experienced leader but he is extremely intelligent. He is intelligent enough to appoint people who can advise him the best. He is also Lincolnesque with some of his picks. Like Lincoln he has picked former rivals to be in his administration.

Secretary of State: While I'm not a Hilary fan and while I do think that Bill Richardson should have gotten the post (although depend on what news source you read he still has a shot). Bill Clinton is still respected in the world (unlike another soon to be expresident), and reminds the world of the days when the world actually liked the US. She is a capable and intelligent woman and will do a good job. This is kind of reminiscent of Lincoln picked Seward to be his Secretary of State.

Secretary of the Treasury: While I don't know much about Tim Geithner. I'll trust Obama and his team on this. He could have picked better but I'm cool with this.

Attorney General: Eric Holder seems to a well qualified reformer. He was born to a granddaughter and an immigrant from Barbados in Queens. He attended Columbia University and interned for the United States Attorney and the NAACP. He was worked for the Department of Justice for three decades. After graduation from law school he was a trial attorney in the DOJs Office of Public Integrity. There he assisted in the prosecution of Democrat Congressman John Jenrette, who was involved in the Abscam scandal. In 1988 Reagan appointed him to serve on the bench as a Judge of the Superior Court of the District of Columbia. In 1993 he was appointed US Attorney for DC, where he oversaw the conclusion of the case against Dan Rostenkowski. In 1997 Clinton appointed him Deputy Attorney General. He has criticized the Bush policy on torture and the warrantless wire tapping policy calling them “disrespect for the rule of law…not only wrong it is destructive in our struggle against terrorism” He is the reform we need after Ashcroft, Gonzales, and Mukasey.

Commerce Secretary: My own governor Bill Richardson. While I still hope he gets State I’ll be satisfied with him here. He has kept New Mexico from suffering too terribly from the recession while creating jobs, a tax credit for solar energy (think about that on a national scale!), eliminated the sales tax on food (very awesome. Trust me), rural jobs tax credit (our rural areas are suffering badly right now). He’s kept taxes low on working folks here in NM, and he has done a phenomenal job at protecting Medicaid and Medicare from the claws of the Bushiviks. All in all he will be a great Commerce Secretary.

Health and Human Services: I can’t really say much for against Daschle here. But I’ll trust Obama on this one.

Chief of Staff: I know quite a few folks here don’t like Rahm, but I do. 1) He gave us our majority in the House by actually fighting the Republicans. 2). He is a tough talking SOB Chicago Jew, who is missing part of his middle finger, and who majored in ballet at Sarah Lawrence. He is going to be Obama’s pitbull. And he will get the House (and probably the Senate) to do what Obama wants them to do.

Well that’s my two cents

New Mexico Dem aka Wolf Scott-Cohen

Still optimistic

Obama never was a progressive, but, I know there was no choice and I remain optimistic.

Personnel suggestions???

Anyone commenting here and complaining about Obama's cabinet choices so far is welcome
to make other suggestions. I haven't heard any yet.

And it's not Rubin and not Summers at Treasury. Whether Geithner will bring new ideas and
start out untainted with the present Wall Street scandals (he's already at the Fed in NYC)
is yet to be seen.

Remember
1. These are not permanent appointments. If Obama doesn't like the job they're doing he
can ask for their resignations.

2. They work for him and not him for them. So far we have no reason to fear that Obama
is selecting people to whom he owes something.

Choosing Clinton for State might be a way to defang the Clintons a bit.

If any of us really know better we should be running for office.

Take pleasure in the dwindling number of days in the Bush administration. The various
paranoid fantasies about their stealing the election or allowing another terrorist
attack as a way to declare a state of emergency or some such have not come to pass.

Happy Thanksgiving folks.

Obama needs time.

He's a smart man. Surrounding himself with the best and brightest in their fields. Unlike bush who appointed incompetent cronies who were utterly clueless! Please do not forget, 12 months ago everything was OK, but now the repugs have handed him a stinking dead fish and laugh as they walk away from their mess. This will take time to get things running right again, then we can really look forward to better times ahead. But for right now.....IT'S THE ECONOMY STUPID! Peace and love... (even to the refugs) !

Obama = Hillary

There's hardly a sliver of daylight between Clinton and Obama so do not be surprised. Be grateful if you get 60% of what you want. But in the meantime, the man is weeks away from taking office. I for one am hugely relieved he is relying on expertise, on people who know their way around.

It's all good. Chill out.

Give it time. It makes sense to start with people who know where the bathrooms are. Let him get his feet under him. Let him make his policies and desires known to staff and the American people. They will serve the President as they are supposed to. As he gets more comfortable, some of these early re-treads will start resigning for other pastures. But, right now, a whole group of neophytes wouldn't be good for anyone.

Change Takes Time

It ain't gonna happen all at once and maybe not exactly the way we want it to. Obama has said we will disagree with some of his decisions. In those cases, give him feedback. We have enTRUSTED him with the presidency. Let the man do his job. Geesh.

Obama's doing what he said he would....plus...

Obama has NEVER talked about withdrawing from SW Asia, he voted FOR the bankruptcy reform act of 2005, which basically has middle-class and poor people by the balls, and his health insurance program is well privatized, similar to McCain's. These things were STATED early on in his campaign...were you not reading, or do you just NOT want to remember???? Closing Guantanamo will be a largely symbolic gesture, as the U.S. Empire has many Gulags worldwide...they'll just move 'em to Diego Garcia, where they'll REALLY be out of sight, out of mind. Obama's ties to Wall Street Tort lawyers are well documented...they accounted for a large piece of his campaign finance, as well as the U.S. government! Go to Solari.com for an interesting detailed look at Obama's money trail. Obama is a neo-liberal...there, I said it. They want to make the rest of the world resume putting on the feedbag for them. On the other hand, I AM glad to see that we finally got past race. But there again, Obama is NOT of slave descent, like the majority of African-Americans. That, I think, made him "safer" to vote for whites than, (for the sake of example only), Jesse Jackson. On the other hand, we'll wait to see what he does about a financial stimulus and energy policy. Henry Waxman's ascension to the Energy committee's chair is a positive sign...U.S. automakers had better get their shit together. Ford, at least, has a plan...they HAVE a viable product line in Europe and Australia that they HAVE STATED they want to retool for in North America...a truly global car. I think we should let GM and Chrysler rot. They ALL have their skeletons in the closet---the bus transit and rubber conspiracy in the 20's and 30's, the "killing" of the electric car in the 90's, but GM, especially, has made no ongoing effort to improve fuel economy, and Chrysler has always made a big(ger) deal out of performance vehicles. The other thing we have to watch is how he handles oil company mergers. ALL the "majors" are DIRECT LINEAL DESCENDANTS of the "Seven Sisters" of J.D. Rockefeller's Standard Oil. It's taken a century, but the are VERY close to being reunited, and in control of ALL the nation's energy now....AGAIN. How will Obama handle this??? And, the Elephant in the room...HOW WILL HE ADDRESS PEAK OIL, which is the mover and shaker of almost ALL of the financial turmoil we see around us??? Now is NOT the time to "shut up" about it!!!!

burnout kills, people.

I'm seeing a lot of news cycle burnout here folks. give your minds a rest and let the man do his job. he knows what he's doing, that's why we elected him. watch the game, go for a drive, do something other than worry. the worst is over. maybe do something for the community, just detatch from the endless news cycle and you'll feel wonderful. gas is relatively cheap. get out and have fun, there's reason to celebrate!

For God's sake leave the man

For God's sake leave the man alone. We elected him because we think he can do the job. He isn't even in office yet. If you think you would be smarter and better why didn't you run? I have every confidence in this man's intelligence and drive. I believe he will bring us through this and it will take longer than a week. Some of you people are disgusting and obnoxious. Let's just trust him and give him a chance. You liked Bush better???

So the only people who are

So the only people who are "capable" or "strong" must be those who have served in a previous administration? Then we need a new president-elect, don't we? There are plenty of capable people who did not serve in the Clinton administration--and no doubt others who did, but are not identified with policies like shoving NAFTA through, bombing various countries, the first "Terrorism" (shredding the Bill of Rights) Bill, and taking apart the protections that kept another depression at bay until they were repealed under Clinton, and thus brought on the one we're sinking into now. The idea that we must "back off" and "have faith" is just recycled oats. We must do the opposite: provide pressure from the left to counter what's coming from the right. Hell, Obama himself said we would need to do that! Yes, he was elected to govern the whole country and not just progressives; but 30 years of conservative rule have left us in a rather desperate condition, and centrist, cautious, "tired-and-true" approaches will not cut it. For the size of the challenges we face, we need clear-sighted, bold and decisive action--another thing Obama said himself. I have seen plenty of evidence that he has the brains and knowledge and temperament to give us the leadership we need in these extremely difficult times. Whether he has the integrity is the question, and the first appointments are not reassuring.

Disappointed? Yes. Surprised? No.

One thing Obama is not is a Progressive. Sure, he's intellegent and I'm sure he can do the job as President. However, I'm not expecting much from him. I don't think he'll follow in the footsteps of Bush, but I don't think he's going to be an FDR (though that's EXACTLY what we need right now!) I think he IS going to be a moderate and it would be foolish to think elsewise. His voting record as Senator certainly can't be called, "far-left" or even "progressive". In other words, he isn't a Kucinich nor a Feingold - both of these individuals would have certainly moved this country in a more progressive manner. Am I disappointed in some of his cabinet members? Yes. The idea of keeping ANY member from the Bush administration is down right CRAZY and WRONG! As for pulling people from the Clinton administration (including Hillary), I'm not thrilled. I find it very hard to believe that with all the bright minds in our country's universities and such, that we are stuck with the same ol' gang. Some may think it's wise for the president to surround himself with cabinet members who don't share his views or vision. I suppose that's ok to do with one or two of your members, but not the majority. Heck, look what Bush accomplished by surrounding himself with people with like-minds! Granted, he took this country to the bottom of the well, but I think we need something just as drastic to drag this country back out again.

I feel the tip of the knife at my back

Look, I've attended nearly every Iowa Caucus since 1976. And the record turnout this year definitely was not an endorsement for a third Clinton administration. Had it been Hillary Clinton would be our president-elect or, worse yet, we'd be talking about president-elect McCain!

Personally, I caucused for John Edwards because he spoke for the union members of the United States. I really wanted to caucus for Dennis Kucinich because his positions, on nearly everything, were closer to mine than any of the others. But I knew in my precinct, cheek-by-jowl with a Bridgestone/Firestone plant, he wouldn't be viable so I went with my second choice.

Most of the caucus goers for Edwards, and those for Hillary Clinton, I'd seen before. We were old hands at this Iowa Caucus stuff. But the Barack Obama supporters were mostly young, including my neighbors, and this was the first time they ever caucused, let alone registered to vote. And they were fired up.

So with the inauguration less than 60 days away, will those same young people who trudged through the snow and cold to attend their first Iowa Caucus feel as fired up for President Obama after four years of a "Triangulating Bill" Clinton administration redux? Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State, Larry Summers at Treasury, Rahm Emanuel and Eric Holder for Attorney general? This is change?

I'm sorry, Christine Bowman, but do you really think this rogues gallery will truly be ...willing to consider new ideas[?] I ain't holding my breath on that one.

We can only hope that president-elect Barack Obama, technology and Internet savvy, will read a few blogs and discussion boards, such as this, that are critical of his cabinet choices to date; give them six months to a year, and if we, the people of the United State of America, are still unhappy with his cabinet, and the drift of the ship of state, he'll have the guts to fire them and change course.

Tip of the knife...

ETS, I couldn't agree with you more.

Patience

Obama was not elected to be chief saint.
And if he tried to please each one of us he'd go mad before an hour was up.

If he just appoints a bunch of neophytes to the cabinet we'll be in a big mess in no time
flat. Why do Obama supporters believe they/we know better than he does?
If Clinton is the Secretary of State it will be up to Obama to ensure that she speaks for
him.

Have a nice Thanksgiving dinner. Enjoy your family and friends.
Give it a rest for a few days.

Don't know yet

I'm just waiting to see if he changes some of these things. Tear up the Patriot Act. Stop sending billions for wars that are giveaways to war profiteers. Open up all the presidential papers. Investigate 9/11. Investigate the Hedge Funds. Prosecute Bush, Cheney, Rummsfeld and all the other Iraq war cheerleaders. Stop the war rhetoric. Stop giving 3 Billion a year to Israel so they can keep people in ghettos. Stop hate radio. Take care of the least among us. If he does these things he can appoint whoever hell he wants to.

Do you seriously expect Obama ...

... to do all of those things? Hell ........ half of those things?

You're in for a long four years.

Yes...why not?

Why can't we expect something good?

You can always "hope for" ...

... /"expect" "something good", and he'll certainly do many good things, but he's given no indication that he's interested in most of your wish list (for some items, just the opposite).

Obama is a moderate who leans liberal/progressive on some issues, and those who are "hoping" that he'll swing the agenda hard left are setting themselves up to be sorely disappointed.

Obama/Hillary Clinton

I believe in forgiving, but not in rewarding someone who was so very nasty. Hillary Clinton is a Republican at heart and her Hawkish foriegn policy slant does not belong in a progressive movement.

A "Republican at heart"?

Please ........... their policy positions were virtually identical.

I understand how upset you are with his decision to choose her as Secretary of State, and I also want to weep ..............

(with laughter).

Patience, PLEASE!

While Obama got 52% of the popular vote and enjoys a 68% positive rating, and Democrats control the House and may get a fillibuster-proof Senate, a VERY significant portion of the country is not convinced that conservatism is dead, or should be.

Obama will not make the mistake Clinton did of blowing his post-inauguration mandate on something like Gays in the Military. There are things that need to be addressed before DOMA is overturned. Like an economy in tatters and an administration that has been politisized beyond belief.

Of course he picks members of Bill Clinton's administration; they know how government works (unlike Palin,) so they will know how to meke it work better. Obama still sets the agenda and the tone, and the tone is calm and capable.

And calm and capable is what the economy needs, because the credit crunch and volatile stock market are the result of uncertainty. To convince Congress and the public of the need for a massive stimulus, with a dramatic shift toward a sustainable energy policy, Obama has to stay close to the center on other issues. If he manages to stop the ship of the economy from capsizing, he will have the credibility to change the course of the nation. Rome wasn't built in a day, and building America for the 21st Century will not be instantaneous.

The rightwing fearmongers are trying to discredit the Democrat victory with claims of vote fraud, media bias and ObamaMania. If America is still standing 2 years from now, and people feel we're on the right track, look for a fillibuster-proof Senate without kowtowing to Lie-berman.

I'd like that.

They're baaaaaaack

I wish someone would drive a stake through the heart of the DLC. It looks like they'll be running the show again and we will have a "center-right" government, just like the corporate press says we need for our "center-right" nation. The more things "change", the more they remain the same.

I agree

The DLC spells GOP they're no different.

Obama

Jane Bianco As a retired local elected official there was nothing that drove me nuttier than I already was than people who knew just exactly what I was going to do, or what I was going to think, or say before I had done, thought or said anything. What gall! What gave them the right to judge me and my actions -- without ever discussing the matter with me personally. You all are doing the same thing with Obama. Get off of his case and let him do his job. You may all be totally surprised that he actually knows what he is doing. All of this speculation is just that -- unfounded speculation. And by people who have never been elected to anything.

Take a breath

I am an idealist but a pragmatic one. When I decided to vote for Barack Obama in the Pennsylvania primary and then to give my time as a volunteer later when the fall campaign picked up, I did so with no illusions about him being 100% in alignment with where I stand on the issues. He spoke about being the president for all of us and I believe he means it. He has a greater chance of effectively addressing the major crises in front of us with a broader coalition of minds. If the Iraq War was all he faced he would not need this. The people of our nation have very common agreement about that atrocity. But for others matters there is as much confusion as there is anything else. If he goes too strongly with one point of view he runs the risk of nothing but stalemates in congress. Remember that not all of those big D Democrats there are progressives. Ken Mattos aka Texas Bird

Obama

Didn't take long, did it? President Elect Obama has not even moved into the White House yet, and liberals already want to know if he is letting them down. I consider this discussion and question, itself, absurd on its face. Liberals need to demonstrate a political sophistication somewhere above that of the toddler who only sees themselves and their highly personal interests and issues in the mirror. Remember that Obama did not win to satisfy you, personally, and that how well he does on the national and international stage will be, in part, linked to how well he balances competing perceptions and group interests. Another important part will be for the electorate who voted him in to show some trust in how he starts things off. After all, there is plenty of time to criticize. But please don't give the fascist Right more ammunition and nonsense to transmit even before the Inauguration in January.

Did Bush ever consider the other side?

This discussion is legitimate and needed. If we just let the President do what he wants just because he's a Democrat then we are no better than the Republicans.

He's Detail Oriented

I am relieved to see that so many of us are being patient & realistic. I have no problem with Obama's choices so far. I, too, believe that the mess Bushco is leaving is so enormous that Obama's only choice is to choose people with years of experience. One thing I like about him is that he is detail oriented & he takes his time. Palin may think being a Community Organizer is something to be mocked; well,we are witnessing it on a grand scale & I like what I see.

Mistakes will be made by anyone in office

Obama hasn't let down progressives, or anyone else yet. Progress (to me) means moving forward, and we, as a nation, are doing that. Obama promised to work in unity with all of us. To pander to progressives, or any one group, would be the same as continuing down the road GWB led the nation down. Obama is a true progressive in that he has the ability to work with all sides, listen to views which differ from his, and reach and agreement on which direction to lead in. Give the guy a chance, he hasn't even been inaugurated yet. he will make mistakes, we won't always agree with his policies, or decisions, and there will be times we get pissed off at him. But, right now just let him do his job of putting together the best damn cabinet we have seen in a long, long time.

Biggest mistake Obama will ever make

Obama has ust shown himself to the just another politician. With all the Clinton retreads he's picked so far, he may as well have made Hillary his "first lady" because she will dominate the scene with all the drama that usually surrounds her. Talk about a deal with the devil. Someone, please reply to this and tell me what Hillary Clinton has accomplished over her lifetime. And does anyone out there think Bill Clinton won't cynically use Hillary's new position to make money. I voted for Obama, opposed my own (racist white) family to support him, and now this. Barak, you disgust me today.

... shall fall from their eyes."
