Sarah Palin: The Welfare Queen from Wasilla

A BUZZFLASH NEWS ANALYSIS

We all know by now that Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin hates socialism.  Unless it's socialism for her family.

Palin, who loves painting herself as a self-reliant woman who likes to say, "Thanks, but no thanks" to unnecessary government spending, is always on the lookout for a freebie, even if it means playing it fast and loose with the law. While she ridicules Sen. Barack Obama's plan to "spread the wealth" to people who actually need it, Palin is seeking more of the socialism for the wealthy pioneered by President George W. Bush.  In fact, the motto of the GOP since Ronald Reagan has been "spread more wealth to the financially avaricious rich by pickpocketing the working class."

New reports of Palin's misspending government funds for personal financial benefit emerged from an Associated Press investigation this week. Palin charged taxpayers over $20,000 to pay for her daughters to travel with her to events to which they were not invited, including 64 one-way and 12 round-trip tickets, as well as the girls' own expensive hotel rooms. In all, previous reports have estimated Palin charged taxpayers more than $43,000 in travel expenses for family members.

If that weren't enough, it seems Palin lied on official reimbursement forms, saying the girls were invited when, according to organizers of the events, they were not. But it doesn't stop there. Apparently, after she was tapped as Sen. John McCain's running mate, Palin went back and amended the expense reports with language to make the travel sound like official business, as is necessary for reimbursement under Alaska state law.  So on top of being a freeloader at taxpayer expense, she altered financial documents to misrepresent unjustified personal expenses paid for by "average Joes."

If this rip-off occurred just once, one might be able to write it off as a lapse in judgment. Unfortunately for Palin, it comes on the heels of reports of other questionable "write offs," adding up to what appears to be a pattern of abuse. In short, we are learning that Palin is not the self-reliant opponent of government spending that she claims to be.  She's more like the welfare queen from Wasilla.

The state is already looking into the possibility of the impropriety in $17,000 of Palin's claim for per diem pay.  The money was apparently paid to her for "travel expenses" incurred on nights she spent at her home in Wasilla, AK.  The money is supposed to be used for when an official travels on state business, not for a commute from an Anchorage office to a home in Wasilla.  Is it part of "the real America" to steal from the taxpayer?  Palin receives a governor's salary, from which she is expected to pay -- like any average small town American -- her home expenses. But she chose to have taxpayers pick up the tab.

It's important to note that Palin is not continuing any Alaskan gubernatorial tradition of defrauding taxpayers.  The only Alaska governor to have school-age children while serving in recent memory is Tony Knowles, Democratic governor of the state from 1994 to 2002. Knowles told the AP he had never charged the state for his children's travel. Knowles also said that he prohibited Alaskan commissioners from charging per diem allowances when staying at home, no matter where their home was located.

One Alaskan tradition exhibiting tendencies of socialism is the oil and gas rebate checks. Last year, Alaskan residents received a $1,654 check as a dividend from oil revenues in the state. Now, thanks to an initiative backed by Palin, each Alaskan (including Palin, her husband and children) will get $1,200 more to help pay for energy cost increases. Apparently the almost $10,000 the Palin family received last year wasn't enough to heat their Wasilla lakefront home.

Now that she's a vice presidential candidate, Palin can stop relying on Alaskan taxpayers to foot the bill. Instead, it is donors to the Republican National Committee who pay her way these days.

According to an article on Politico, the RNC spent $150,000 on the appearance of Palin and her family in September alone. Shopping sprees to high-end stores such as Neiman Marcus and Saks reveal thousands spent on Palin, her husband and even baby Trig.

No similar expenses could be attributed to the spending of the DNC or the Obama/Biden campaign. In fact, BuzzFlash has documented that Obama still goes to his neighborhood barber of 11 years, where he spends $20 for a haircut, out of his own pocket.

So much for "Palin the Wal-Mart mom."

According to Politico, however, it's more than just tacky to spend donors' money on luxury clothing for one's family, it may actually violate the Federal Election Commission's prohibition against personal expenses.

Palin is clearly used to getting a free lunch. Her record as a reformer is as thin as tissue paper. Her claim that she said "No thanks" to the bridge to nowhere? Bogus. Her selling the governor's private jet on eBay? It was eventually sold, but not online, and at a loss. Not only that, but when you charge the state to fly you and your family around, and when you sell the state's plane for less than it's actually worth, that's a weak argument of fiscal responsibility. It's more like bragging about losing money.

Aside from the fact that she may face legal problems in the future for her misleading statements and questionable splurges, our problem with Palin is her misleading stories to the American people and questionable values. Her constant evocation of Joe the "Plumber," her claims of cutting government waste, and her middle class values are all lies. The truth is that, although the Palins are worth well over $1 million, the governor still feels entitled to dip her hand in the collective cookie jar.  She's a freeloader, not a reformer.  And the taxpayers and political donors are paying the tab for her personal expenses.

This was a pattern that first became clear when she was Mayor of Wasilla, when she showed no hesitation in taking advantage of freebies and using public funds for a lavish redecoration of her mayoral office, among other unnecessary expenses.

What's to say she won't continue in this same pattern of abuse once she's in the executive branch of the nation? Despite her populist posturing and rhetoric, it's clear she favors continuing Bush's socialism for the rich, and by extension, for herself.  And the taxpayer keeps getting stuck with the bill.  Palin has done very well living off of the public treasury, very well indeed.

Alaska 'travelgate'

This is the second article I've read concerning Palin's travel expenses or rather inappropriate billing for travel expenses. If she were in business for herself and generating a schedule C as part of her tax return, she would only be able to claim expenses for herself NOT THE WHOLE DAMN FAMILY. And the expenses would have to be applicable to the particular business, not just any trip. The IRS rules/laws are very clear about that one, and it is even written so the average person knows what it is means. What I wonder is how the state of Alaska differs from those rules/laws, and if they do. Most states, as a general rule, follow along with what the feds do (i.e., have the same rules). I know California does although there is always some lag time before California gets them implemented. How long will it be before she is investigated for this one? I am somewhat surprised out how many of her dirty little shennanigans are being reported in mainstream newspapers, but then, again, it probably sells a few more newspapers than usual. If Joe Biden had pulled one-tenth of straying into gray, questionable areas that she has done, he would have been nailed to the cross a long time ago.

IDIOT SAVANTS RULE THE WORLD & OF COURSE AMERICA!

PAILIN is a prime example of the terms CLEVER, THIEF, LIAR, THUG and above all IDIOT SAVANT. She knows very little about a great many issues, but ABSOLUTELY NOTHING ABOUT KNOWING WHEN TO KEEP HER MOUTH SHUT. She works on the theory that the FASTER & MORE SHE TALKS the more difficult it will be for anyone to PIN HER DOWN or HOLD HER ACCOUNTABLE for her actions. For example, the use of the term SAMBO she employed to describe OBAMA in front of 2 of my friends (unbeknownst to her) at a restaurant when she heard 'SAMBO' had defeated 'THE BITCH' Hillary Clinton. One day real soon, though, she'll say the wrong thing to the wrong person & s/he WILL NAIL HER LITTLE SLICK BUTT TO A TREE WITH A GAG IN HER MOUTH SO NO ONE WILL HEAR HER SCREAM...

Be careful with the "S" word.

Don't fall into the right-wing trap of referring to anything involving taxes or gov't spending as "socialist." There is nothing vaguely socialist about what Palin has done, and is continuing to do. What she's done in Alaska is simple fraud. No economic ideology involved.

More on the Palins

The other night I saw the Hate Talk Express on one of the news programs. I'm hoping that catches on. I also saw an investigative reporter interviewed who got to wondering when Todd Palin talked about standing in front of their new house in Wasilla back in 2002 with his contractors. It seems that Mayor Palin eliminated a requirement for building permits in the town. Then they built their dream house about one mile from the site of the new stadium about two months before she became governor and immediately before awarding the contracts on the stadium. That's the infamous 15,000 stadium built for a town of fewer than 9,000 residents that ran the town's debt up to $20 million, about $3,000 for every man, woman and child. Anyway, the reporter had only been able to pin down the materials supplier. The certificate of completion did not need to list who built their house or how much it cost. The reporter is pursuing the probability, given the timing and circumstances, that the contractors threw in the house and wrote all or a large part of it off to the stadium construction. The trick is to prove it. Pat Williams

The author is to be

The author is to be commended for summarizing Palin's hypocrisy: she has a long history of feeding at the public trough. I take issue though with her selling the jet. True, she did say she sold it on ebay (but her ebay ad didn't attract any buyers, and so the jet was sold to a private individual). True, the plane was sold at a loss (compared to what it originally cost Alaska). True, the state shouldn't pay for flying her numerous children from here to there (although, as governor, she has, on occasion, a legitimate need to fly from point a to point b). She inherited the jet from her predecessor, former governor Frank Murkowski (who really wanted a big jet, although there aren't many places in Alaska where a jet can land). Frank first tried to get Homeland Security to give him a jet and, in one of its few wise decisions, Homeland Security turned him down. But Frank persevered and eventually got his oh-so manly jet. Palin was imho right to sell the albatross: in so doing, in selling something close to useless, she did 'save' Alaska money. I mention this only because I don't want to see Palin's lengthy history of feeding at the public trough muddied by including one of the few useful actions she performed as governor.

Alaskan women talk about Palin..very great video!!

Please watch this if you have a chance.. http://www.brasschecktv.com/page/446.html

This is disgraceful!

What are we going to do about this? The Republicans have put Palin in the position of perhaps becoming the VP of the United States yet she has shown us time and time again that she is NOT QUALIFIED to do so! Now we find she is 1-taking money to bring her children with her on business trips, 2- has a $150,000 wardrobe, a $35,000 tanning bed installed in the governor's mansion and countless other things. She is constantly saying things that are just not true and has bashed Sen Obama as if she has been in the government for 20 years! She has absolutely NO CLUE. Has anyone ever told her that less is more? I can only HOPE that on November 4 the American people come out in droves to vote in Sen Obama and put an END to the madness! When you go to vote, take someone with you! Make sure EVERYONE gets their chance to vote! Thank you and peace to you and yours...

The Fantasy

Have you ever fantasized of having a job where ALL or most of your everyday expenses are picked up by others.....taxpayers, shareholders, etc. Palin is so typical of that socialist managerial club such as politicians, hired hand CEOs, and celebrities and those that have never started their own company where all the expenses come out of their pocket directly. These types never spend their own money as they are on the dole (corporate or taxpayer) 24/7. Yet someone like Palin claims to represent individualism and accountability like us regular people who must pump our own gas and actually pay for it ourselves out of our constantly declining wages. She is all hog wash. She's been on the public dole for years and now get a 150K new wardrobe to "serve us".

Is Palin just being an Alaskan?

Given that Alaska is *The Pork Barrel State*, taking much more in Federal funds, per capita, than most states AND that an inordinately high percentage of those high-paying jobs up there depend on Federal funding, perhaps Sarah Palin is just being Alaskan when she clothes herself, takes the kiddies along for a ride, and sucks up a per diem for living at home. Huh?

At least she'll be dressed nice when she is tossed under the bus

Pork Barrel Palin will be thrown under the bus called the Straight Talk Express as soon as this campaign is over. It should be fun. I expect that she will end up on Dancing With the Stars.

Gov Sarah Palin's just a typical Alaskan then

Living off government largess seems to be a way of life up in our Forty-ninth State. A USAToday news story from March of this year states, "...Alaska...is set to receive $506.34 per capita, the highest in the nation, according to Taxpayers for Common Sense, a watchdog group which tracks earmarks."

The last time anybody cared to look, 2005, Alaskans paid $5,434 per resident in federal incomes taxes but received $13,950 per resident in federal spending!

According to a 2003 study By Scott Goldsmith and Eric Larson for the Institute of Social and Economic Research with the University of Alaska Anchorage:One in three jobs in Alaska—about 96,000—depend on current federal spending.

So maybe it's time we in the lower 48 listened to Alaska's rugged-individualists of the Alaska Independence Party and cut the State of Alaska off the federal dole. No more Medicare, Medicaid and get our boys and girls in uniform the hell outta that frozen wasteland. Let the Welfare Queens from the Land of the Midnight Sun learn what its like to be a fully responsible tax paying citizens for a change!
