GOP got their wish when Keith Olbermann was demoted, and we are the lesser for it

A BUZZFLASH NEWS ANALYSIS
by Chad Rubel

The second definition of incendiary, according to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, is "a person who excites factions, quarrels, or sedition: agitator" The New York Times defines incendiary as Chris Matthews and Keith Olbermann.

Given that the first definition involves arson, the word choice is very powerful. And make no mistake, the word was used in the headline AND the story.

In the land of pundits, ranking them in terms of being incendiary, Matthews would come in 38th and Olbermann 54th. Several in talk radio, virtually everyone at FOX "News" Channel and a significant handful of on-air CNN employees would rank far above these two.

Rebel-rouser might be a way to describe Olbermann and brash and annoying describes Matthews. But incendiary?

Would The New York Times ever describe O'Reilly, Hannity, Limbaugh, Savage, and Coulter as incendiary? Not likely.

As far as the infighting within the MSNBC family, the one name missing in the discussion is Tim Russert. MSNBC has a dynamic of different personalities, much more so than CNN or FNC. Some of us like the infighting since it shows the reality of having political arguments in real life. FNC people pretty much agree with each other, and CNN's people are too blase to have strong opinions. But clearly Russert was a glue for the staff, and that glue hasn't been replaced.

There is a tradition of TV anchors who step up and add commentary where appropriate. John Chancellor offered commentaries during his reign as NBC's main anchor. Walter Cronkite's famous take on the Vietnam War was a commentary while as anchor.

Many have focused on the main crux of what Olbermann said Thursday night that was the "last straw" for the right-wing whiners.

If, at this late date, any television network had, of its own accord, shown that much video tape and that much graphic video tape of 9/11 -- it, we, would be rightly eviscerated at all quarters, perhaps by the Republican Party itself, for exploiting the memories of the dead, and perhaps even for trying to evoke that pain again. If you reacted to that video tape the way I did, I apologize. It is a subject of great pain, for many of us still, and it was probably not appropriate to be shown.
But the interesting part is what Olbermann said before this all began.
"I'm sorry. It's necessary to say this, and I wanted to separate myself from the others on the air about this."

Think about this. When Chancellor would give his commentaries, the graphics on the screen would make it clear that what he was about to say was a commentary. Olbermann didn't leap into his statements. He clarified them, knowing there would be no graphics to discern that what was coming was a commentary. Olbermann went out of his way to not be "incendiary" in his comments.

If you watch the video again, notice how Olbermann holds his right hand close to his mouth. Olbermann has done thousands of hours of live television -- he knows that holding a hand close to your mouth is not what one should do. Clearly the emotion, the sincerity carried the moment.

I can't say I lost anyone personally in the World Trade Center, and clearly Olbermann did. What he said was extremely raw, painful for him to say, and likely knew that there would be a negative reaction from the right-wing attack dogs. But he said it because he felt it needed to be said.

What Olbermann did, which ultimately got him kicked off the anchor desk, was deliver a strong commentary that showed courage that Katie Couric, Brian Williams, and Charles Gibson combined couldn't produce in 10 years of air time. But it wasn't incendiary: he wasn't even angry as much at the Republican Party, which produced the video that aired on C-SPAN, probably PBS, and perhaps CNN and FOX News Channel as well, but angry at MSNBC for airing the video. And it wasn't even angry, and it was delivered in a relatively quiet tone. And that quiet tone is something that Bill O'Reilly or Sean Hannity couldn't do if they lived to be 100.

I adamantly confess that I have been a huge Olbermann fan for years, stretching to the days of "SportsCenter" and even back to the CNN Sports days of long, long ago. And one of the reasons why I think Olbermann is great is because he doesn't hold back what he feels. And Olbermann would absolutely be the first person to tell you that his career has suffered at times because he reacts the way he does.

But it makes him so real in a way that Couric could never understand; it makes him human and worth watching. It would be better if that commitment to truth and courage were sitting at the anchor desk for the debates and on Election Night. MSNBC has decided, thanks to right-wing pressure, that David Gregory would be a better fit. And we are lessened as a result.

Olbermann and Maddow

Keith is still on the air in prime time because enough people are watching him. Rachel got her own show because MSNBC expects that enough people will watch her. Will it be enough to elect Democrats? Will it be enough to reform the MSM? Probably not, but it is a great pleasure to me to listen to two intelligent people present the news of the day. Are Olbermann/Maddow watchers in the minority? Yes, but like them, the other TV personalities (Stewart and Colbert)and the progressive bloggers and other small-time reporters, we have to avoid despair and keep on fighting. We could get a break somewhere along the line.

I Am AS Sick To Death Of MSNBC, As I am Of These Damn RePUKES!!!

I have watched this network from its inception, and it has always shilled for the RePUKES! It helped G.W. Bush get in, and I was so happy that finally, it was changing. Well, guess what? It never really changed! During the primaries, it pushed for Hillary. It pushed really hard. That was a gift for the RePUKES, of course, just like the rest of the MSM. Matthews was trying to be a little more liberal, but if you've been watching as long as me, you know you cannot trust him. He carried Bush's water for almost 8 years. He just wants to be with the "winner." So, we always only had Keith. They had Buchanan, Scarborough, Gregory, and then, after Tim Russert died, we got saddled with Brokaw and Williams during the debate, primary, and election coverage. They are 2 very partisan RepUKES, who slant the news quite Right-Wing! So, who is surprised about this? GE-OWNED-CORPORATE MEDIA BE DAMNED! If they think this will help their ratings, however, they have another "think" coming, because I am "going on strike!"

What Bull

What else is new? God forbid that someone says the truth now a days!! Keith Olbermann is such a breath of fresh air that if you don't believe in truth then you need not watch him! What is wrong with the repugs that they have to STILL put 9/11 in their speeches? You would think that they have no thought in how every time that day is mentioned or shown on TV that it just brings the whole day back with a vengeance! Especially to those that lost someone! This just goes to show you that Republicans have NO HEART, BRAIN, OR MORALS! They are all holier than thou, two faced, lying pigs!! I wish each and everyone of them would go away and NEVER COME BACK! Keep up the OUTSTANDING work Mr Olbermann, we the people that appreciate you will continue to watch you and look forward to the truth, especially your Special Comments!! By the way F*(K YOU MSNBC for not having the BALLS to tell the GOP to F&(K Off!!!

The Real "Maverick" - Keith Olbermann

I really was surprised that Olbermann and Matthews were chosen to cover the RNC, and thought, "Wow, we might actually get some unbiased reporting." But, NOOOOOOO, whiney-butt McCain stomps his little feet, and presto-changeo, they're out'a there. So much for unbiased reporting of a convention that was more about mud-slinging than substance. Keith, perhaps you should consider PBS!

I'm So Sick of the Republicans Trotting Out 9/11...

...like it was some carney sideshow. And Giuliani, you know you were in on it, so shut up and go home. Those who claim they protected us are really the ones who failed to protect us, and the whole 9/11 story reeks of inside collaboration. Why do you think that US troops in Afghanistan were so few, and why do you think the "WMD" in Iraq was so played up? Do you really believe that "W" wants to find Bin Laden?

Olbermann is my hero

MSNBC has finally sold their soul. I will continue to watch Olbermann and now Maddow, but that's it. My news will be online almost exclusively. Without Olbermann, there's little truth and I don't have time to weed through the garbage with Fox and CNN. Olbermann may eventually leave MSNBC and I'll be happy when he does. Then I can kiss MSNBC goodbye for good. His career will skyrocket, but MSNBC may end up in the ashes with the rest of the sell-outs.

NO BIG DEAL....but MSNBC is off my watchlist as well....

THEY sold out america

WRONG!!!

VERY BIG DEAL!!! First Amendment Stuff!!!!!

WRONG!!! (as usual)

"First Amendment Stuff"?

No.

The First Amendment applies to government actions (Restricting free speech, etc.), not private employers. You may not like what they did to Olbermann, but they had every right to do it, and is no First Amendment "Stuff".

Keith Olberman

I refuse to watch MSNBC if they take off Keith and Chris. David Gregory is alright but he just doesn't have the excitement that the other two have.

David Gregory is the One WHO.....

BREAK-DANCED With KARL ROVE!!!! HE'S ANOTHER RIGHT-WINGER!!!

Face it, MSM owned lock, stock, and barrel

MSM is most to blame for the sad state of our country. Here's a prime example, to demote someone, a patriot, like Olbermann and instead allow David Gregory to spew his right-leaning rants is just more proof that MSNBC is just like the Crap News Network and Fixed News. The country is doomed, and the media is most at blame. Instead of tearing apart the Palin pick for what it was, crass politics, they instead go on and on ad nauseam about how she has energized the wacko right. Her hate speech at the republican convention was lauded as the sermon on the mount. At some point people, we are going to have to take this country back. And it won't be pretty.

Matthews had nothing to do with their decision..

He's been spouting anti-Democratic pro hard line talking points for decades - so has Scarborough and Buchanan. Anyone that attacks the 'diplomatic' Left is A-OK in the eye3s of most of the media. That's why hacks like Harold Ford Jr are allowed on. What's so new about all that?

No one cared about MSNBC or NBC, or Brian Williams or Tom Brokaw, and their ratings proved it. Not long ago they even thought of dumping Williams.
Now those two mealy mouthed brown-nosers are the networks new heroes??

Their ratings have soared now only because someone, finally, is attacking the Right -in public and on the air.
It was Olbermann they were after - we all know that and waited for it to happen - didn't we really??

The same New York based hard liners that jumped on Bush's wagon and on the Iraq wagon, are back for more.
Diplomacy, it seems, is not profitable enough to their tastes. Death truly becomes them.

But, I'm also kind of ashamed of Olbermann for not speaking out on what he knows damn well was, as you say, a Right-wing ordered demotion.

Keith- no special comments??

Nationalism is not terrorism. And an adversary is not an enemy.

keith better off

I don't know about anyone else, but I'd rather have Mr. Olbermann available to provide his inestimable journalism apart from the clones (Rachel excepted) on the election desk. I missed his extended analysis every night of both conventions. The special niche he and "Countdown" fill becomes a black hole of "ground noise" and misinformation when he is not available.

Keith Olberman vs fox news

If i have to choose A news channel wich is(fair and balanced) then I pick Keith Olberman and MSNBC. at lease we're not in A no (spin zone) that spins the truth for the repubs. Keith tells the truth and hits A home run each time pointing out the bull shit that the other channels call news? and when keith go's off, I watch Rachel maddow new show thats making larry king take notice.
