You can easily tell Phil Gramm has nothing but utter contempt for people at the bottom of the economic ladder,and that is where I have ended up,as have most industrial workers.I remember his days in the senate and I must say he has evolved into an even more pompous ass,if that's possible. He hates anything related to government services for the poor but handouts for the wealthy,well,this is what keeps America great.He and his family have fed at the government trough for so long they can't comprehend,and have no idea the daily difficulties of a wage slave in America today.He and his wife Wendy are so out of touch with what it takes to actually earn a living today in what remains of industrial America.I worked as a welder for over twenty years from the late seventies until the late nineties.The company I worked for went bankrupt and closed. At the end of that job I was making four dollars more an hour then I make today.I wasn't rich but I was doing ok.I would love to see him and all of his ilk live on the miserable $350 a week take home I make today for forty hours.I am sure he spends that much on a dinner and doesn't bat an eye.Meanwhile CEO's make millions and even billions a year.That is the real disgrace.

Phil Gramm didn't fail just two grades. According to the New York Times, "Gramm failed the third, seventh and ninth grades." You don't run into many people that have failed three grades.

Phil Gramm was left back twice and didn't graduate high school until he was 19. His teachers thought he was slow, and probably mentally retarded. For a Republican that cries about the welfare state, he has been at the public trough his whole life -- getting a college education at a state school (University of Georgia), teaching at a state school (Texas A&M), and then sticking his snout into the House and then the Senate for 22 years.

The proposition that the rich deserve to be rich and the poor deserve to be poor is essentially a moral position used as a philosophical weapon by amoral people to shame those who actually have a conscience. Phil Gramm is such a creature. He has made a career in congress of aiding and abetting the legalization of theft while pontificating about it. He is a criminal. Like most criminals, he blames his victims for having been stupid enough to get rolled in the first place. He has a point, but it is not a moral point; it's a point about power. The Phil Gramms of the world have always been the arch enemies of those content to just try and live a decent life. Until moral defectives like Gramm are pulled down, made to fear justice and to make restitution, they will always hold people limited by moral imperatives in contempt.

Simple First: The US is hardly the only country where poor people are "fat" - this was, in fact, a huge problem in Great Britain and the rest of the Industrialized World in the late 19th and early 20th Centuries. There as here, it was mainly due to diets heavy in carbohydrates and fats and low in proteins and vitamins, resulting in malnutrition in the working classes.

Which leads to the Clearly Intentional - Graham must know full well those poor Americans are "fat" not b/c of good nutrition like he as a rich guy is getting, but b/c of malnutrition because they eat lots of empty carbs and fats, since they're much cheaper than food that's actually good for you. I should know, b/c I'm trying to change my own eating habits in order to eat healthier - and fish and a salad, or chicken and hummus, cost me about double what a burger and fries, or a couple slices of pizza, do!

Anyway, the quote's about a quarter-century old so it's not an immediate GOTCHA! But - as the Rethugs liked to say about Slick Willie when he was President, "It speaks to his character...." ;)

We live in the only country in the world where if you're not wealthy you have to eat artificial food. That "food" is making us fat and sick. They are killing us to control the population. PLEASE NOTE THEY DON'T EAT THE GARBAGE THEY'RE FEEDING THE MASSES. We must all plant our own gardens and trade chicken and eggs and skip out on THEIR grocery stores, which are killing us all.

I think there are many reasons we're fat and I think lack of education about health is one of the biggest. The other is that carbs are cheap easy to get and instantly satisfying. Also, and why no one ever mentions this I just don't know, ALOT of people lost more physically active jobs and now they sit in front of computers at work for 8 hours a day. If they're like me they add on almost 2 hours of commute time and by the time they get home they are exhausted. I'm sure there are many more reasons. I was never fat till I had to get into the commuter lifestyle. I had to move out of the city because that's where I could afford to buy a home. I'm glad old farts like that are old and will die soon. I think the younger generation is smarter. By the way, just for perspective all you young'ns out there - the house I grew up in which is worth $290K now was bought and just about payed off in the 60's by my dad who was a humble mechanic! I'm a professional and I can't live like my parents did!! Thom Hartmann had a good radio show today where they were talking about this very thing. Man, I sure would like to get Phil Gramm in a room with a handful of people like myself. Not poor but not thriving that's for dang sure!

There curently are several countries were taxes are low and governmental services, aside from the police, courts and military, are non-existant: Somolia, Haiti, Afghanistan and Iraq.

If you're wondering why poor people are fat, which is kind of true. It's because all they can afford to eat is shit like MacDonalds which is cheap and has little nutritional value. Poor people are also less educated and tend to cling to guns and religion when times are tough.

Gramm was asked by Kudlow if Obama had a more direct assistance plan for the middle class (than McCain's plan) to give everybody making less than $250K/yr a $500.00 tax credit -or $1000.00 per household tax credit. Gramm emphatically answered no, and in the same breath said "Now let Me ask You a question: How many people poorer than you have ever hired you?" Hmmmm. Oh, he's an asshole alright. An insensitive economic guru with a total disregard for the middle class, and contempt for voters. Yeah, let's try That kind of republicanism this time; The non-compassionate conservative kind, because the Other kind has been working so well for them -and US.
