Did Bush Admin. Order the Saudi Threat to Intervene in Iraq if We Leave? An Excuse to Stay would Sure be Convenient for Them

A BUZZFLASH NEWS ANALYSIS

The alleged Saudi threat to help Iraqi Sunnis fight Shiites if America withdraws from Iraq sure sounds bad for world security. But it sounds great for the Bush Administration. Saudi Arabia's pledge not to intervene in Iraq is contingent on our presence, so now - the argument becomes - we have to stay to avoid an even nastier civil war and increased destabilization across the region.

Two weeks ago, Dick Cheney made a sudden trip to Riyadh to visit Saudi King Abdullah, but no details about their meeting were officially released (other than "to discuss issues of 'mutual interest' in the Middle East," according to Cheney's office). The New York Times reported yesterday that the purpose was to relay the intervention message personally. Though the White House and the Saudi government are denying this claim, the threat is certainly in their "mutual interests."

Saudi Arabia has religious ties to the Iraqi Sunnis, and they also score points at home by opposing the US. They would love to get as much of a claim on oil profits as possible, and ties to a favorable Sunni Iraqi government would help. The Bush Administration, on the other hand, needs any excuse it can come up with for why we need to keep troops in Iraq. Many Americans may be persuaded - perhaps reasonably - that Saudi intervention in Iraq might be a bad thing, and that we should therefore let the Saudis hold us hostage by staying.

The Bush family has very close ties to the Saudi rulers, and such collaboration would not be the first time they tried to help each other out. There is no way to know precisely what was discussed in the Abdullah-Cheney meeting, but we should certainly be suspicious of sudden, secret meetings with Middle Eastern monarchs regarding Iraq, especially when the Bush Administration, Iraq, and oil are involved.

Bandar Bush?

The Bushies have benefitted from a long, warm relationship with the House of Saud(remember the picture of Bush holding hands with the Prince?) If the Saudis didn't bring down the price of oil leading into the election then it was a miraculous coincidence that gas dropped 70cents over three months around here and is now halfway back to $3 a gallon again in December. They want Bush in power. So does Bin Laden (nephew of Salem bin Laden, the angel that bailed W out of Arbusto, one of his failed business ventures). He makes campaign videos for George, doesn't he?
In light of the timing of Cheney's visit, it makes sense that they would threaten armagedon, that's so Cheney in style.
If it actually came to pass, it would be a deveastating conflict that could be said to go back a thousand or more years, the Arabs versus the Persians. And since Saudi Arabia and Iran are #1 and 2 in oil production and reserves, who gets Iraq's oil matters.
The Sunnis that Saudi Arabia backs, live in the portion of the country that has no oil. In order to get control of it, they will have to displace the majority Shi'a, who are backed by Iran. (That's already happening, Sunni insurgents are getting their funding from Saudi clerics and charities. They get their money, eventually, from the gas we buy for our SUVs, so OUR money is going to Iraq to pay people to kill OUR troops and frustrate our program, right? [Buy CITGO!] )
My guess is that they will gang up on the Kurds and take THEIR oil, leaving the Kurds screwed again (and of course, we will stand by and let it happen, again, keeping our allies, the Saudis and Turkey happy).
What a mess!
GET US OUT NOW!

I see the convergent propaganda leading to more

troops; "events" will require it. Nonetheless, Bush can't get away with this for long; I think the American people are sick of this useless war. Mostly, I pity our troops and their families, and I pity the Iraqis who have to survive in the anarchy.

On another note, I would like to know who formed and funded the Iraq Study Group? What factions of the ruling oligopoly are fighting each other as manifested in the Iraq Study Group? Did the Carlisle Group suddenly realize that things were way too out of hand and they had to rein George and Cheney in?

it always comes down to oil with the saudis.

the saudis are getting backed into a corner as far as their monopoly on the worlds energy supply. of course they want iraq under their fanatical little thumb. with emerging new technologies moving away from oil they will grab as much oil as they can then jack up the price in order to keep making the profits they are so accustomed to while it's still possible. being as that bush 1 and 2 and the carlyle group and haliburton and smith are so deeply in the saudis pocket i really think that they might have pushed for the war for exactly that purpose. to destabilize iraq and eventually gain control of another 11% of the world's oil supply. it looks like we're their puppet in this after all.

"It is the first responsibility of every citizen to question authority." -Ben Franklin

You may be right....

but the Saudis have sufficient interest to intervene in the event of a US pullout, that they wouldn't need to be prodded to do so. The Buzz surrounding Cheney's trip, was that the Saudis summoned him, not the other way around. Would a scenario in which the Saudis informed Cheney of their intentions in secret, and the Bush regime responded by asking the Saudis go public be more likely?

Maybe I'm just focusing in too closely but...

When I read the articles reporting on Deadeye's visit to Saudi Arabia, one thing hit me in square in the face, and that was the use of the word "summoned". Maybe it's my still present but abet very strained "America is #1" (despite Bush and the neocons) attitude, or perhaps its just focusing down on semantics, but I found myself thinking... "What??? The Vice President of the "Most Powerful Country in the World" being SUMMONED to Saudi Arabia, WTF is that??? I think back to the picture I saw where Bushie and either the King or Prince were holding hands... If these events and so many others don't serve to frame the actual reality of the Neocon "friendship" with the Saudis, well what else would?

As I've heard so many times before, "Follow the money"...

That is, if you can find it... "Where DID we put that $10 billion anyway, it's got to be around here someplace..." Maybe the White House ought to do a spot similar to the "Where are those WMD's" yuck yuck routine that Bushie did a while back... Oh wouldn't THAT be funny, NOT.

Gotta love it!!

Deadeye!! LOL!! Beautiful!!

Where the house of Saud can get away with summoning Cheney comes down to money, as you said. Think of what might happen if the Saudis converted there hoard of dollars to euros.
