Watch Lieberman Jump to the GOP If He Wins: Part II
A BUZZFLASH NEWS ANALYSIS
August 19, 2006
Excuse us for harping on the Lieberman thing, but a couple of articles have appeared that add credence to BuzzFlash's prediction that Joe Lieberman will jump to the GOP side of the aisle if he is re-elected. As we have speculated, he will pull a "reverse" Jim Jeffords and remain an "Independent," but formally affiliate himself with the Republican caucus.
The White House is tacitly backing Joementum -- and now the New York Times confirms that the "G.O.P. Deserts One of Its Own for Lieberman."
The GOP money and resources are now flowing to Lieberman. You can be sure that they will want their pound of flesh if he wins.
Then there's the reality if he were to win, it would probably be with a majority of his votes being Republican, not Democratic. The odds are Ned Lamont will start pulling more Democratic votes in, which leaves Lieberman scrambling for Republican and Independent votes. But he can only win with a large turnout of Republicans voting for him.
Where will the majority of his constituency be if he wins? Well, not in the Democratic Party, let's put it that way. So, it would make perfect sense for him to declare he is going to join the party that best represents the majority of people who voted for him, which would be the Republican Party.
And there's more. The Republican Senate Election Committee is backing Lieberman. And Lieberman has hired "GOP pollster Neil Newhouse, who lists popular Republican Gov. M. Jodi Rell of Connecticut among his clients."
Why the Democratic Leadership in the Senate isn't vigorously campaigning for Lamont and shunning Lieberman is a suicidal act in which collegial clubbiness outweighs the interests of the Democratic Party. It is also a slap in the face of democracy, since Lamont beat Lieberman in a primary based on winning the popular vote.
Lieberman excels in sanctimony and self-righteousness, but he will have no qualms whatsoever about saying "Sayonara" to the sucker Democratic senators who continue to publicly or tacitly support him.

Do you want Joe Lieberman to drop out? Pressure his contributors
I have a list of some of the contributors to Holy Joe Lieberman's campaign that make consumer products, or sell services. Call these companies and tell them you will not do business with them until Holy Joe drops out.
Oh sure they will say these appear only PACS for their employees, but your money could go into these pacs if you bought their products and you will not finance the candidacy of Holy Joe Lieberman or any Republithug.

Holy Joe
Don't give up so easily
1. Lieberman can be beaten. In fact, it should be easier now than in the primary, which was one helluva a long shot from the get-go.
2. Even a razor-thin majority--with subpoena power and media sway--is well-worth having. Look what the Reps have accomplished with only a handful of votes to spare.
The Democratic senators know better than you or I do whether the hope of keeping Lieberman in the caucus is vain or not. The safest and best course is to elect Lamont, but pissing and moaning about the DC Democrats is not really moving the football, I don't think.
Ned, please write the big check. So you won't forget, do it now, while you're thinking about it.

Perhaps the Dems in
Lieberman needs to remain a "Democrat"
Joe has shown his true colors.
Let's remember who helped Lieberman defeat Lowell Weicker
William F. Buckley, Jr., son of wealth and privledge, founder and editor of reactionary magazine National Review, host of conservative talkshow Firing Line.
And, according to The Hill.com, they're still good friends.
Democratic leadership and Lieberman
I think you're drunk with power
We haven't even swept Lieberman away yet.
This is not the Democratic senators' fight. They didn't ask for it. Most backed Holy Joe for many reasons, at least one of which was a very good one: they'd like to have a majority in the Senate. As we are seeing now, Joe is pretty popular in CT, and as the Democratic nominee would have been a slam dunk to keep the seat.
A Senate majority will require victories by some pretty right-wing Democrats, some worse on paper than Lieberman.
But I hate Lieberman. He's a piss-poor excuse for a Democrat and deserves to lose for being such a self-centered crumb-bum that he wouldn't even speak up for Al Gore in the debates. How do you lose a debate to an android like Dick Cheney?
So it's up to us, not the Senate Democrats, to win this one for Lamont. And Lamont, too, could help. I don't mind sending twenty bucks. I really don't. But I can't help but wish he'd loan the campaign a small amount to help things out.
How about loaning $20 million, Ned? That would get things going. And probably get the DC Democrats elbowing each other out of the way for a seat at your poker table.
And Ned, did you notice how John Kerry spoke up for you the other day? Do you remember how he happened to be the Democratic nominee? He loaned himself $20 million.
For Christsake, let's quit whining and win. Threatening the incumbent Democrats with dire consequences and a "progressive takeover" would mean a lot more if the netroots could actually win at least ONE election.
You know it?
way off base
Purging the party
It's a concept.
But I think it would make the GOP bigger, not smaller. Not only Lieberman, but Baucus, Nelson of Nebraska, both Arkansas senators, Salazar...I'm not sure where to stop. If we limit the "real" Democrats to those who voted right on the bankruptcy bill and on the Alito cloture vote, doesn't that give us about 22 members in the Senate?
That's a pretty big hill to climb to get back to 51. In the long run, it might be the best thing. But in the long run, we will all be dead.
It would be nice if Lieberman would get out of the race. But since that doesn't seem likely, I say let's beat him.
If you want to put pressure on somebody, put pressure on Lamont. He's got enough money to win this thing. How about a dollar for dollar matching grant with individual netroots donors?
Lieberman's pockets are only so deep. I don't think he's absolutely done a deal with the GOP, and I don't think they are completely sure of him either. For this reason, I don't see them going all out for him in a state like CT--and against a guy like Lamont, who's no patsy.
So it should be possible to spend Holy Joe into the poorhouse, and I say it's none too soon to start.
As I said, I'll pledge $20, which frankly is a decent sum for an English teacher way the hell out in California. Ned Lamont is a cable millionaire who can pledge quite a bit more. So speak up, buddy; there's a whole bunch of us who'd like to see you sworn in amidst the pleasing sound of the gnashing of Lieberman teeth.
