Watch Lieberman Jump to the GOP If He Wins: Part II

A BUZZFLASH NEWS ANALYSIS

August 19, 2006

Excuse us for harping on the Lieberman thing, but a couple of articles have appeared that add credence to BuzzFlash's prediction that Joe Lieberman will jump to the GOP side of the aisle if he is re-elected. As we have speculated, he will pull a "reverse" Jim Jeffords and remain an "Independent," but formally affiliate himself with the Republican caucus.

The White House is tacitly backing Joementum -- and now the New York Times confirms that the "G.O.P. Deserts One of Its Own for Lieberman."

The GOP money and resources are now flowing to Lieberman. You can be sure that they will want their pound of flesh if he wins.

Then there's the reality if he were to win, it would probably be with a majority of his votes being Republican, not Democratic. The odds are Ned Lamont will start pulling more Democratic votes in, which leaves Lieberman scrambling for Republican and Independent votes. But he can only win with a large turnout of Republicans voting for him.

Where will the majority of his constituency be if he wins? Well, not in the Democratic Party, let's put it that way. So, it would make perfect sense for him to declare he is going to join the party that best represents the majority of people who voted for him, which would be the Republican Party.

And there's more. The Republican Senate Election Committee is backing Lieberman. And Lieberman has hired "GOP pollster Neil Newhouse, who lists popular Republican Gov. M. Jodi Rell of Connecticut among his clients."

Why the Democratic Leadership in the Senate isn't vigorously campaigning for Lamont and shunning Lieberman is a suicidal act in which collegial clubbiness outweighs the interests of the Democratic Party. It is also a slap in the face of democracy, since Lamont beat Lieberman in a primary based on winning the popular vote.

Lieberman excels in sanctimony and self-righteousness, but he will have no qualms whatsoever about saying "Sayonara" to the sucker Democratic senators who continue to publicly or tacitly support him.

Lieberman is a bad man

gsnoad I have been saving for the past month that we need to get "Soreloserman" to commit in written form that he will not switch parties. He obviously will, especially if we deny him his committee positions. This is exactly what happened to Jeffords. There is a way to get Joe to leave the race, it is called leadership. But if he stays in we must get him to commit to voting with the Democrats. It must be public, it must be written, and it must be clear. He will not do this-that is when the party comes out against him. It is time to play hardball with him. The Republican can't win in CN. We need to support "our" candidate, and Lieberman needs to understand the consequences of not supporting the party. John Kerry, I thought was very clear this weekend. If we allow Lieberman to be elected, he will switch, and then we cannot take over the Senate.

Do you want Joe Lieberman to drop out? Pressure his contributors

Oh sure they will say these appear only PACS for their employees, but your money could go into these pacs if you bought their products and you will not finance the candidacy of Holy Joe Lieberman or any Republithug.

Watch him jump

Joejoe will jump to the Republicans if they keep control of the Senate. He will attempt to return to the Democratic fold if the Democrats take over the Senate. That's just the way he is. Of course, all this will be moot when he loses.

Schlesinger

There are many within the GOP who want the GOP candidate to drop out cause he has 4% at the moment. Another ugly sign that Lieberman is a heavyweight on the right. Startin with Gores strange election loss, followed by Bushs unhindered effort to impose anti-terrorism laws, followed by new institutions such as Heimatschotz (homeland defense), followed by no opposition among democrats against the Iraq war and finallized by Liebermans jump to his feet at the SOTU. Lieberman is in no way cloaking his effort of wish-washin essential democratic positions. Hes eager to reform health care. But that doesnt make him a representator of his democratic electors. Most of his electors will have no gain by Unocal or BP or Halliburton and Liebermans the democrat who is most eager to obliterate such small contradictions through his grinning understatement. Most of his electors wont have more of a say through Heimatschotz and wiretapping and Liebermans grinning even more. That Lieberman was declared more or less superflous on the left cause he bubbles often but without any advantage for the own party people is clear sign the democrats are waking up to the Bush reality. You better earn your medals while in the democratic party as Lieberman did. It makes Bush even less trustworthy.

Bush just cost-cutting in CT?

Holy Joe

Those damm peasants thought they could defeat a three term senator in a primary. Now they know the score. Joe is connected. He represents the establishment. As he said himself, there are more important things than party affiliation. Things like wealth, power and privilege are more important. As for any nonsense about supporting Joe in the vain hope of gaining a Democratic majority in the Senate, just apply the duck test: if it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck ..it's a Republican. Even if the Democrats win a majority in November, they will remain a de-facto minority because of the party's right wing.

Don't give up so easily

1. Lieberman can be beaten. In fact, it should be easier now than in the primary, which was one helluva a long shot from the get-go.

2. Even a razor-thin majority--with subpoena power and media sway--is well-worth having. Look what the Reps have accomplished with only a handful of votes to spare.

The Democratic senators know better than you or I do whether the hope of keeping Lieberman in the caucus is vain or not. The safest and best course is to elect Lamont, but pissing and moaning about the DC Democrats is not really moving the football, I don't think.

Ned, please write the big check. So you won't forget, do it now, while you're thinking about it.

Steve

Perhaps the Dems in

Perhaps the Dems in congress and at national headquarters have missed just one teensey little fact that when properly recognized will blow holes in leiberman's row boat. He is no lnoger a democrat. Period. He resigned by deciding to run under another party. When he formally submitted petitions to run in november under his own independant party he should have effectively been removed from any considerations given to him for democratic membership. Every committee, every partisan position, every single chairmanship on every board is revoked. He has no power or influence any longer. Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs, Armed Services, Environment/Public Works, and Small Business Committee should all boot him right out the door. simple fact, if you dont pay for the club membership they dont have to let you in the door, similarly, if you denounce the values of your party and reject the party publicly while resigning from it and starting up your own you lose all the perks. lufinn

Lieberman needs to remain a "Democrat"

until after the elections. Since the GOP has decided to back Joe and not Schlesinger the 'conservative' votes will mainly go to Lieberman. And in order to keep the support of many Democrats (who like to support the sitting 'Democrat')he needs to proclaim that he is still a Democrat. But if Joe were a Democrat he would accept the results of the primary and support Lamont now. There is only one reason why Lieberman does not do that: Lieberman is no Democrat.

Joe has shown his true colors.

He's putting his political aspirations ahead of the people of Connecticut. "The biggest threat to the Bush Administration is an informed public." Rainlillie http://rainlillie.blogspot.com/

Let's remember who helped Lieberman defeat Lowell Weicker

William F. Buckley, Jr., son of wealth and privledge, founder and editor of reactionary magazine National Review, host of conservative talkshow Firing Line.

And, according to The Hill.com, they're still good friends.

Democratic leadership and Lieberman

"Why the Democratic Leadership in the Senate isn't vigorously campaigning for Lamont and shunning Lieberman is a suicidal act in which collegial clubbiness outweighs the interests of the Democratic Party." The Democratic Leadership in the Senate is nearly as corporate bound as Lieberman. If Joe goes down in the general election in Connecticut, it would bode ill for such Democrats elsewhere, as they would be swept away by a progressive takeover of the Party. This they fear even more than a Republican takeover of the nation. Hence, in their hearts, they are pulling for Joe to win.

I think you're drunk with power

We haven't even swept Lieberman away yet.

This is not the Democratic senators' fight. They didn't ask for it. Most backed Holy Joe for many reasons, at least one of which was a very good one: they'd like to have a majority in the Senate. As we are seeing now, Joe is pretty popular in CT, and as the Democratic nominee would have been a slam dunk to keep the seat.

A Senate majority will require victories by some pretty right-wing Democrats, some worse on paper than Lieberman.

But I hate Lieberman. He's a piss-poor excuse for a Democrat and deserves to lose for being such a self-centered crumb-bum that he wouldn't even speak up for Al Gore in the debates. How do you lose a debate to an android like Dick Cheney?

So it's up to us, not the Senate Democrats, to win this one for Lamont. And Lamont, too, could help. I don't mind sending twenty bucks. I really don't. But I can't help but wish he'd loan the campaign a small amount to help things out.

How about loaning $20 million, Ned? That would get things going. And probably get the DC Democrats elbowing each other out of the way for a seat at your poker table.

And Ned, did you notice how John Kerry spoke up for you the other day? Do you remember how he happened to be the Democratic nominee? He loaned himself $20 million.

For Christsake, let's quit whining and win. Threatening the incumbent Democrats with dire consequences and a "progressive takeover" would mean a lot more if the netroots could actually win at least ONE election.

You know it?

way off base

First, I will never support a right winger, whether democrat or republican. We are a coalition of progressives, liberals and moderates. That's 70% of America. It's people like Lieberman who have enabled republicans to be in power. Once we kick out EVERY Republican Lite politician in our own party, the enabling ends, the right wingers are isolated into 1 party, and they will self destruct. But that can NOT happen until every Joe Lieberman is voted out of office. Second, we win as a coalition. That includes the net roots. But I'm willing to guess that 99% of those who voted for Lamont are not bloggers. Third, if Lieberman drops out of the race, Lamont wins over Schlessinger by how many points???? 50? 60? So it's Lieberman right now that is jeopardizing the seat for the Democrat.

Purging the party

It's a concept.

But I think it would make the GOP bigger, not smaller. Not only Lieberman, but Baucus, Nelson of Nebraska, both Arkansas senators, Salazar...I'm not sure where to stop. If we limit the "real" Democrats to those who voted right on the bankruptcy bill and on the Alito cloture vote, doesn't that give us about 22 members in the Senate?

That's a pretty big hill to climb to get back to 51. In the long run, it might be the best thing. But in the long run, we will all be dead.

It would be nice if Lieberman would get out of the race. But since that doesn't seem likely, I say let's beat him.

If you want to put pressure on somebody, put pressure on Lamont. He's got enough money to win this thing. How about a dollar for dollar matching grant with individual netroots donors?

Lieberman's pockets are only so deep. I don't think he's absolutely done a deal with the GOP, and I don't think they are completely sure of him either. For this reason, I don't see them going all out for him in a state like CT--and against a guy like Lamont, who's no patsy.

So it should be possible to spend Holy Joe into the poorhouse, and I say it's none too soon to start.

As I said, I'll pledge $20, which frankly is a decent sum for an English teacher way the hell out in California. Ned Lamont is a cable millionaire who can pledge quite a bit more. So speak up, buddy; there's a whole bunch of us who'd like to see you sworn in amidst the pleasing sound of the gnashing of Lieberman teeth.

What Lieberman Does or Does Not Do

What difference will it make? His time has past. The only thing that is going to matter (now that the moment has arrived for we the people to change the world} is what's going to be our opening move? How's about Cindy Sheehan running for president on a platform that features troops out now, justice for the Palestinian people, plus calling for he impeachment of President Bush? And the neat thing about this move is that each and every one of us who is in favor of Cindy Sheehan's running for president can see to it that Cindy Sheehan not only wins our nomination, but runs for and actually becomes our president. See to it how? By way of the Internet, that's how.
