Is the FOX Host Trying to Create a Church of Glenn Beck
BUZZFLASH NEWS ALERT
by Jeffrey Joseph
After having already tried to influence his fans to abandon broad Christian humanitarian efforts, Beck hardly waited long to show how he might fill the void those Christians otherwise filled with their churches -- he appears to be creating a faith all his own.
For a guy unwilling to even accept the label of "journalist" for fear of being found obviously lacking the moral integrity to live up to the title, Beck's attempts to act as some kind of spiritual guide to his viewers seems altogether disturbing. On his radio program, he told his listeners and presumed acolytes of the Church of Beck, "You've got to be an evangelist for this message." The message, of course, hearkens to a conservative ideal, but more specifically, to the one Beck propagates. As a mere radio and TV host with no college degree, Beck could hardly have referred to himself more clearly when he said, "The answer is not going to come from the elite in Washington. It's not going to come from the elite in the schools." He goes on to say the answer would come in the form of "you," his listeners, but he follows with his own instructions on how to make it so, such as telling each to be "an evangelist" for his cause twice within a few minutes.
At the same time Beck calls for evangelism of his own cause, he continued his derision of the widespread Christian call for social justice. To Beck, social justice is nothing more than "a perversion of the Gospel" because "nowhere does Jesus say, 'Hey, if somebody asks for your shirt, give your coat to the government and have the government give them a pair of slacks... You want to help out, you help out. It changes you. That's what the Gospel is all about."
What the Gospel does say, however, is that people are "blessed" who feed the hungry and thirsty, care for strangers, clothe the naked, and tend to the sick (Matthew 25:34-6). Jesus also appeared to have less disdain for government involvement in humanitarian causes since those would be funded by tax dollars and Jesus endorsed paying taxes, anyway (Mark 12:14-7).
Epistolary writer Paul hardly seemed like he would mind if volition for such acts came from the government, either, since he wrote, "Let every soul be subject to higher powers: for there is no power but from God: and those that are, are ordained of God. Therefore he that resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God. And they that resist, purchase to themselves damnation." Not to mention the ideal of the early Christian church that would have petrified Beck since "all they that believed, were together, and had all things common. Their possessions and goods they sold, and divided them to all, according as every one had need." Indeed, the actions of the early Christians as portrayed in the Acts of the Apostles sound downright Communist. No wonder Beck opposes the faith and wants to create his own.
Beck would later to try to clarify that he may not oppose all churches, just those that "are basing their religion on social justice." Unless he knows of a particular Church of Social Justice, though, his clarification seems useless. He continued to rant about faiths that might use "code words" such as "social justice and economic justice" before asserting of social justice that "all of our faiths -- my faith, your faith, whatever your church is -- this is infecting all of them."
So Glenn Beck is "advising people to leave their church" if it teaches social justice, but also that all faiths could be dangerous because the social justice movement "is infecting all of them." It appears that Beck either wants his listeners to abandon religion altogether, or more likely, he wants them to follow the one he has worked to create. I have to say I have never
I have to say I have never been a Beck fan, but I loved this clip. Hey, DEO had a problem with the phrase Beck was laughing about himself with “I know you because I am you”. Not only have I known many protective dads who were wild in their youth who view ever suitor of their daughter with adrenaline and suspicion. Heck it is a family comedy staple. As far as the tastelesness of the “dead intern” joke, I think he was only half joking about needing to keep a close eye on this guy because his parental instincts seem awry, but Leno and others have made hay with Chappaquidick and lpi practice test other boundary violations, inappropriate behavior and law breaking by people in power. Yeah “a dead intern” is a tragedy, I totally agree with JN0-400 that, as is the boys who were sexually abused and the many other stories of our senate and congressmen not having any ethics as far as I can tell. However, this ccsp is the stuff American humor is made of. We laugh when it is too painful to cry ccna latest dumps any longer. On the other hand, I might think Brown is a dufus but I watched that clip and I don’t think he comes across almost naive about the issues Beck is raising. Somehow I’m actually reassured that Beck is aware of boundaries you don’t cross.
What John the Baptist Said...
"And the crowds were questioning him, saying, “Then what shall we do?” And he would answer and say to them, “The man who has two tunics is to share with him who has none; and he who has food is to do likewise.”
Glenn Beck was raised a Roman Catholic at a time when the Church was actively pursuing Social Justice and Liberation Theology but left thye Church to become a Mormon. When I first read this comment I took it as an assault on the Catholic Church by a bitter ex-member.
