Christmas Cheer Turned to Ideologue's Jeer: Laura Ingraham Bashes Bill O'Reilly for Complimenting Obamas

For years, Bill O’Reilly acted as the face of FOX News and the misinformation it perpetuates, but the arrival of Glenn Beck and his ilk may have signaled an even further right bend for FOX as Laura Ingraham recently chastised O’Reilly for writing kind words about the Christmas party at the White House. O’Reilly responded in kind.
Ingraham’s issue stemmed from O’Reilly’s piece about healthcare reform introduced by a discussion of the White House Christmas party. O’Reilly apparently made a mistake in showing some measure of appreciation for President Obama and the first lady in saying, “The president and first lady were very gracious to me. This is the first time I have spoken to Michelle Obama, and I was impressed. She is charismatic, articulate and beautiful. The president and first lady could not have been nicer to everybody.”
Ingraham could not stand the praise. Ingraham responded the next day on O’Reilly’s program saying, “I’m gushing over your gushing last night about the Christmas party. I’m still trying to get over that.”
O’Reilly was incredulous that Ingraham would question him.
“What do you think she’s gonna’ do to you, not let you near the punch bowl?” she continued. “I mean, of course she’s going to be nice to you. She’s really smart. I don’t remember you gushing over Laura Bush like you’re gushing over her.”
As O’Reilly explained his own praise over Laura Bush’s speech in 2000, Ingraham prepared her final dig. “I have one question–did you eat an acorn cookie last night, yes or no?”
At this point, O’Reilly was incensed. “You are a blind ideologue who even if somebody’s nice to you won’t admit it,” he retorted. “Talk about a Kool-Aid drinker! Come on! You have an IV attached to your arm on the Kool-Aid.”
Has O’Reilly suddenly positioned himself as a moderate or at least a slightly more honest conservative than his peers? If so, does he have a future at FOX?
Ingraham regularly displays her blind following of the party line on FOX. Ironically enough, she did so as the permanent guest host on O’Reilly’s own show. She referenced the recent snowstorm along the East Coast and commented, “But what about global warming, Al Gore? Come on.” She used that to segue into a discussion with climate-change naysayer Christopher Horner, both of them unwilling to accept a single snowstorm’s relative insignificance considering the UN’s position that 2000-2009 would likely end as the warmest decade on record.
Still, the show remains, until further notice, O’Reilly’s. He also did not miss the opportunity to criticize the president for his politics in the same piece he used to compliment the charm of the president and the first lady, so he still has preserved his right wing credentials.
When even O’Reilly thinks the caliber of conservative hosts and contributors to FOX News is on the level of a “blind ideologue,” though, FOX must really have gone too far. It may be time to take some of the implied advice from O’Reilly–and to Turn Off FOX.
