'Pensacola Jeff': One brave soul speaks the truth, and is greeted by boos, at teabagging party in Pensacola, FL

A BUZZFLASH NEWS ALERT
by Chad Rubel

You may have thought everything that was said at the teabagging parties on Wednesday was right-wing drivel designed to mislead and inflame the masses.

Well, there was at least one brave soul in Pensacola, Florida.

"Pensacola Jeff" is what we'll call him because, well, his name is Jeff and he spoke in Pensacola.

He weaves in and out throughout his speech, using talking points designed to get cheers from the crowd, and sneaking in the truth like vegetables to a picky eater.

Pensacola Jeff starts out with a big shout-out to the troops and veterans. That line gets huge applause, as it should. Then he gives us a history lesson.

"Back in 2000, there was a budget surplus in the country."

After Pensacola Jeff mentions the budget surplus, some guy in the crowd yells out, "What happened?"

Well, let's find out.

"And during the next seven years, it was destroyed by the profligate spending of the Bush Administration. And here we are today, here we are today in a situation."

At this point, he sees the crowd isn't really following along, so he goes for the easy line.

"Let me ask you this: Cheer if you make less than $250,000 a year. Just cheer." The crowd cheers: they are back on his side. "Your taxes are going to be cut under the current budget. Congratulations."

Pensacola Jeff then talks about being laid-off by his employer back in September due to budget cuts, pointing out that this was before the election. Then he goes in for the close.

"So let's remember that if you're going to argue about more taxes and less spending, to place the blame where the blame belongs, and that's squarely in the hands of the Republican Congress until 2006 and the Bush Administration."

Pensacola Jeff walks off the stage, arms raised up to a cascade of boos from the crowd.

When confronted with the truth, the real truth, not the made up baloney being peddled by the right-wing radio and TV, the crowd turns to boo the one person brave enough to stand up for the truth.

Keith Olbermann on Countdown last night played the Pensacola Jeff video, and he and his guest, Janeane Garofalo, discussed it afterwards. Garofalo's initial reaction:

"There is nothing more interesting than seeing a bunch of racists become confused and angry at a speech they're not quite certain what's he saying. It sounds right to them and then it doesn't make sense."

Olbermann put it well later in the segment: "Our friend in Pensacola there who played them like a 3-dollar fiddle, and led them right down the garden path with nothing but facts and then they went, 'wait a minute, that doesn't sound like Rush Limbaugh.' "

It was the truth, but it wasn't the "truth" they've been hearing from Rush, Hannity, O'Reilly, et al. And it certainly wasn't facts as presented by much of the MSM from 2001-2007.

Thanks for the kind words

And thanks, of course, for the Wings award (and the nomination above).

I didn't think I was doing anything extraordinary, but I guess it's had a pretty far-reaching impact. Of course, the naysayers are piling on at my blog, but what should one expect? Good thing I have a thick skin ...

Anyway, "Pensacola Jeff" is a new one for me; on my blog, I go by "Sinfonian." But I guess I'll answer to pretty much anything these days ... and if you can get me a job out of all this, well, all the better. :)

REPUBLICANS OUTSPEND AND UNDER PERFORM

“THE PARTY WITH THE BEST RECORD OF SERVING REPUBLICAN ECONOMIC VALUES IS THE DEMOCRATS, AND IT ISN’T EVEN CLOSE!” -Michael Kingsley-

1). FEDERAL SPENDING: since 1960 Republicans increased Federal Spending by 71% more than have Democrats

2). FEDERAL DEBT: since 1960 Republicans have increased the National debt by 100% more per year than have Democrats.

3). GROSS DOMESTIC PRODUCT: since 1921, adjusted for inflation, Democrats out-produce Republicans by 43% . Starting in 1940 the Democratic advantage is 23% better.

4). REAL PER CAPITA INCOME: since 1960 Democrats have outperformed Republicans by 30%. (This is perhaps the most important economic statistic of all)

5). INFLATION: since 1960, Democrats outperform Republicans 3.13% to 3.89%

6). UNEMPLOYMENT: since 1960 it decreases in an average Democratic year by 0.3% to 5.33%, and increases in average Republican year by 1.1% to 6.38%.

7). JOB CREATION: from 1945 to 2003, Democrats produced 174,200 jobs per month, Republicans have only produced 60,600 per month. Every time a Democrat succeeds a Republican, job creation soars. Every time a Republican succeeds a Democrat job creation plummets. NO EXCEPTIONS!

8). DOW JONES AVERAGE: since 1921 the DOW has increased by 52% more under Democratic administrations

9). THE BOND MARKET: since 1940 the value of 10 year Treasury bonds rose 1.2% under Democrats and fell 0.5% under Republicans

RESULTS MATTER, VOTE DEMOCRATIC!

Great statistics

Thanks, Mike, for this information. I have some wingnut friends for whom this would be a real revelation.

Pensacola Jeff

Please nominate him for Secretary of State for the great State of Florida. I have a feeling he'll do a better job of counting the votes the next time around there. Truly, truly a brave man and a good one.

Interesting idea, but ...

... do you mean a better job than Katherine Harris, or a better job than the DNC?

Come to think of it, either way ...

... he couldn't do a worse job.

Republican Manipulations

It is my understanding that there will be many more teabag protests throughout the year. And they will get worse if the republicans can manage to brainwash Americans. We all know that republicans are the masters of brainwashing. As Janeane Garofalo said, this is about hating the black president and demanding white power. Republicans are playing with fire there and they know it. Republican masters of deception know that pushing race, taxes, and terrorists can incite violence from ignorant Americans who cannot think for themselves. My prediction is republicans will try to orchestrate a division in this country that will be mindful of the turmoil surrounding the civil rights movement. What they are attempting are clearly, subversive acts. Does anyone really think that when the new Homeland Security Dept. warned of a rise in Right-Wing extremism they were just poking around in the dark?

Heres some truth for you

This mess goes way back to the tyranny of LBJ, his criminal war, domestic oppression and to the decoupling our currency from gold under the felonious Nixon. One might argue that it goes back much further to the 1913 Federal Reserve Act that placed our monetary policy under the control of a private secretive and unaccountable bank and soon after the Income Tax that had previously been ruled as unconstitutional. Government got bigger fast with every crisis. Much later under the Gipper the ideas of deregulation took hold with out regard to the lessons of the 1930's and accelerated with some of the most damaging deregulation of banks passing under Clinton. Then there was the Bush Administration giving us the most misguided, incompetent, criminal Federal government in history. Now we have Obama who is continuing on with and expanding the same policies of physical irresponsibility, un-sustainability and anti American, anti constitutional oppression as Bush. He has retained and expanded upon the Bush era policy of illegal wire taping and spying on the people. Decent is largely being squashed or ignored by the MSM just as it was under Bush. The war in Afghanistan is being expanded and the new military budget is larger than the last one under Bush. Not hardly a peep from the progressive crowd. Gitmo is not closed. Rendition has been retained. The Administration can still label anyone at any time a terrorist and arrest them at their whim. Third party's are now considered as potential terrorist organizations. Differing opinion is still considered descent. New consumptive taxes have already begun to be levied with more to come. No effort is being made to bring the Bush criminals to justice the only rational reason being that so no prescient of accountability is set for current leaders to fear. The same criminal bankers are getting more bail out money than ever and they are represented by their own people in Obama's administration. The government still uses only one of their unemployment categories to report a misleading unemployment figure. If the whole report was used as it was prior to Clinton the unemployment rate would now be at about 16%. No new promised transparency there. No MSM to challenge it either. No more mark to market rule so the banks can assign any value they want to their worthless toxic assets rather than the real value. That makes the books look better. Banker Lipstick and makeup to hide reality endorsed by your Federal Government of course. We have lost the nation never to return to the Republic of free people our founders established. I'll bet very few on the left or right can even fathom the truth and will still believe the government under or party or the other will save them and other party is to blame even when they are living in a tent and standing in a soup line, sick and cold.

I second rev9's nomination

and add: "and sneaking in the truth like vegetables to a picky eater" is a terrific line. May I appropriate it at the right moment?

Pensacola Jeff

If it's not too late, I wish to nominate Pensacola Jeff for next week's Wings Of Justice award.

This is the way to do it.

This guy has absolutely the right tactic. Go to the right-wing rallies. Get the microphone. Find the common ground. No name-calling or disrespect. Then hit them with the simple, irrefutable facts. He might have left off blaming the republicans at the end, and simply left them with the fact that Obama is cutting their taxes. Glen Beck isn't telling them that.
