George W. Bush: Should Canada detain him and arrest him for war crimes?

A BUZZFLASH NEWS ALERT
by Chad Rubel

We have noted that travel will be limited for top Bush luminaries, including Bush himself. Europe is definitely not in the cards, but what about Canada. Would Canada stand up and detain George W. Bush for the purpose of arresting him for war crimes?

Bush is scheduled to give a speech in Calgary on Tuesday, so the opportunity could present itself. However, Calgary is prime territory for the Conservative Party of Canada, and Stephen Harper, the country's Prime Minister.

And there should be the possibility that Bush won't be able to enter the country. There is a serious question as to whether Canada should let him in. As we have noted numerous times before, Bush needs a waiver every time he enters Canada due to his DUI conviction. But this time, Bush also needs a waiver, or perhaps could be denied entry based on Canada's Immigration and Refugee Protection Act, which notes that foreign nationals (Bush) who have committed war crimes or crimes against humanity, including torture, are "inadmissible" to Canada.

Canada denied entry to CodePink and Global Exchange cofounder Medea Benjamin and retired Colonel and diplomat Ann Wright simply for being arrested for protesting Bush's Iraq war. Admitting Bush would be a cruel irony.

Assuming Bush will get in, will anything happen to him? Vancouver lawyer Gail Davidson thinks Canada should do something.

"The test isn't whether the person's been convicted, but whether there's reasonable grounds to think that they have been involved," says Davidson, who's with Lawyers Against the War (LAW). "...It's now a matter of public record that Bush was in charge of setting up a regime of torture that spanned several parts of the globe and resulted in horrendous injuries and even death. Canada has a duty."

Arresting a sitting president might be a difficult task, regardless of politics. But arresting or detaining a former president, where there are credible allegations, should be easier. After all, Bush isn't going up to Calgary in any official capacity -- he will give a speech, shake a few hands, and make a lot of money.

Does Canada have an obligation to stand up for the rest of the world, and if nothing else, draw attention to the actions of George W. Bush?

Prosecute Bush

Southtpa: LOL. "Throw Bush to the wolves?" That would be fine, except Sarah Palin (GOP) has been busy assassinating all the wolves. Republicans are good at destroying things .... look at the twin towers and 9/11. Still the best kept secret in America besides the assassinations of JFK and JFK, Jr.

Didn't one of Canada's

Didn't one of Canada's Provences in the east, some years ago, lable B#@h as a war criminal and put a warrent out for his arrest should he ever visit that provence? If so, is there not extradition between the provences? I know that people have been convicted for major crimes on less circumstantial evidence than exists against the B#@h administration. (Jus' a thought) Bumpa

If Americans don't want to touch that turd -

- why would Canadians want to do it?

"Does Canada have an

"Does Canada have an obligation to stand up for the rest of the world, and if nothing else, draw attention to the actions of George W. Bush?" Yes we do have an obligation but like half your country most have their heads in the sand. (I mention 9/11 being planned, the buildings free falling and they look at me like I have gone nuts.) It is the obligation of YOU and the rest of the apathetic people in the States to draw attention to the actions of bush, cheney, rumsfeld etc. It is YOUR duty to shout and scream in the streets so that your government will take notice. You had a chance with Kucinich...but noooo, he's too kooky or whatever other excuse some made. Don't put the pressure on other countries to fix your f@#&ing mistakes...It is YOUR duty to FIX the f@$king mess!!! The common refrain in that YOU ARE THE MOST POWERFUL country in the world...well prove it!!!!

You have to consider that

You have to consider that B#@h's crimes are international in context, with the exception of his crimes against the Constitution and the American people. By rights we Americans should be the ones to clean up our mess and not look to other countries to do it for us. However, B#@h's crimes are against ALL nations that signed the Geneva Convention, so Canada has as much right to prosicute as does the US or any other country. I believe that The Hague is opening up investigations as well. Bumpa

agreed

Yeah, I've got to agree here. Why is it Canada's job to fix the phenomenal disaster that WE (well roughly half) voted into office twice. If our government won't lift a pinky to pursue justice, why should Canada? I'd like to see the Hague get on this, but it just doesn't look good when Americans are still afraid to even discuss Bush administration war crimes.

Bring him to me, I'll arrest his ass....

Bush, Cheney, and Rumsfeld should be in prison awaiting execution for war crimes, treason, torture, violations of international law, and violations of the U. S. Constitution. Oh, and by the way, if we need anyone to "pull the switch" I volunteer.

war crimes

We do not have to prosecute Bush and his cohorts. A complete investigation would be politically possible. Make all the information public. The prosecution could be left to the world court and expedited because the facts would be known. The lunatic right makes prosecution in the US difficult. Look at the attempted payback for impeaching Nixon. If Bush were thrown to the wolves, then it's not our fault. Blame the wolves. Much easier! If the investigation is called fact finding, even less problems. I don't care who puts the rope around his neck as long as it's neatly done.

Oh yeah, and let us not

Oh yeah, and let us not forget Hitler's cohorts not arrested by angry Germans at the end of his tyranny, they were arrested by a foreign nation- US. Then they were tried in the Hague with an international court. Y'know, I would get pay per view for that month just to see his trial, and upon a guilty verdict to charges of mass murder violations of the Geneva convention, and war crimes, his lawful and legal resultant execution.

Canada is required by not

Canada is required by not only domestic statutes but also by International treaty to arrest Bush if he is on their soil. There is no gray area here, Bush has admitted to criminal acts in violation of several treaties and the Geneva convention live on television, and there is substantial other evidence in the public arena. This is not an option presented to the Canadian government, it is a requirement of laws and treaties. If Bush steps foot in Canada, they either have the balls to arrest him and call for a trial in international court, or all treaties are rendered null and void because there is no stipulation for selective enforcement. Why do you think the state department had to hustle Rumsfeld out of France last summer? Because France is part of the same treaty.

Our Prime Minister Stephen

Our Prime Minister Stephen Harper is a GW Bush wannabe. He's modeled his campaigns on W and actually hired some of W's consultants. So I doubt he'd have nothing but cheerleaders in our present administration.

In A Word.....NO

Canada doesn't have the will to arrest Bush anymore than Americans do.

We are the ones who should be demanding the arrest of about half of his administration....demanding justice and accountability with massive civil disobedience if necessary and apparently it will be necessary. There can be no truth and reconciliation without accountability.

If we, once again, allow our government's crimes against the Constitution and therefore against us, as well as against International laws which we helped to codify, this nation will go down in flames; not because of anything some cowardly terrorists did or will do, but because of our own cowardice and/or apathy.

I don't think we can count on Canada or any other country for that matter. Bush/ Cheney,Inc. are our devils, not theirs'.

What in the world is the

What in the world is the smirking pissant going to say that ANYBODY would want to hear?

Word.

His last words infront of a firing squad would be nice.
