New Economic Team Promises Enforcement, Reform, and Obama Comments on Rick Warren

A BUZZFLASH NEWS ALERT
by Christine Bowman

Will the financial markets like Obama's new economic team and their pro-regulatory and reform statements?

President-elect Obama today set a tone of increased oversight and regulatory reform in announcing three high level picks for his incoming economic team. Obama also responded to a question regarding his choice of Rick Warren to give the invocation at his January 20th inauguration.

Mary Schapiro, chosen to chair the Securities and Exchange Commission, promised reform and enforcement would be top priorities. Gary Gensler, selected to head the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, emphasized the integrity of markets as a needed focus. Daniel Tarullo, nominated to serve on the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve, also stressed regulation.

Obama restated as his top economic priority the need to create jobs and get businesses back on their feet. Priority number two, he said, is creating the proper regulatory structure and then addressing long-term budgetary concerns and ensuring a sustainable, responsible economic environment.

"There's not a lot of adult supervision out there," he said of the current environment. He called for a "shift in ethics on Wall Street" including "operating not just out of greed but out of a sense of the common good."

Reacting to the Madoff scandal Obama said, "We have been asleep at the switch." The Bush White House premise had been to favor deregulation, but what's needed now is to "greatly strengthen and update" the regulatory apparatus of government oversight for the 21st century.

President-elect Obama took the opportunity also to explain his invitation to Rick Warren to participate in the inaugural celebration, saying it is "important for America to come together" now and that his administration, like his campaign, seeks to create an atmosphere focused on what we hold in common, not on what divides Americans. "It is no secret that I am a fierce advocate for equality" for gay Americans, he asserted. Obama's invitation to Warren offended many since Warren preaches against homosexuality and was a strong advocate for Proposition 8 in California, which restricted the definition of marriage to a union between a man and a woman and eliminated the right of same-sex couples to marry in the state.

Time for some contrived (and hypocritical) shock

Toooooooo funny. All the Obots acting so surprised that Obama would choose Rick Warren to give the invocation at his inauguration.

Did they not notice Obama's embrace of Bush's Office of "Faith-based" Initiatives (in fact, his talk of expanding it?)? Did they think it was okay when Obama toured SC before the SC primary with homophobe "Reverend" Donnie McClurkin? (McClurkin is an "ex-gay" gospel singer and minister who has called homosexuality a "curse", has repeatedly stated his opposition to homosexuality as being against "the intention of God." He also thinks that that homosexuality is a choice and can be “cured” through prayer, and that gay people are “trying to kill our children.”)

But hey, ..... that was okay, because he was just doing what he had to do to win the primary.

Of course .....

.... if Hillary was doing either of those things, the suddenly-shocked Obots would be screaming about this was a desperate act of "craven pandering to homophobes" and another example of being "willing to say or do anything in her quest for power". But if Obama does it, it's (at worst) a mild/symbolic betrayal that they'll quickly forget or (more likely) just a smart way to gain "political cover" at little cost.

So c'mon "true progs" ...... keep up the feigned shock and outrage ...... at least for a day or two to make it look good.

In this economy, everyone could use a good laugh.

Rick Warren

I suspect that the inclusion of the Ayatollah Warren may have the effect of keeping the crowd levels down on inauguration day. I know that if I had reservations to attend I'd have canceled them upon getting the news that this slug would do the "invocation". As a secular humanist, actually an acolyte in Seventh Day Agnosticism, I find it disturbing that there even is an evoking of Some Guy in the Sky to drop his blessings on this nation.(Sort of a spiritual "trickle down" theory!) A Unitarian or even an Anglican would have been tolerable, but this nutcake .... Obama has got to be out of his mind!

I suggest that all the progressive/liberals who hung on every word from the Golden Tongued Obama throughout 2007 and 2008, come January 20, 2010, again a year later in 2011 and again in 2012 and 2013, collect all your attained "hopes for changes" in one hand and defecate in the other and see which one fills up faster!

Whether by brutal violent rape or cloying seduction -- someone is going get a real screwing!

That's Not NEARLY Good Enough, Mr. Obama

I find Barack Obama's justification for including that homophobic Khrister Warren disgusting - and unconscionable, given his barely-discernible opposition to Prop. 8 and other gay-hating "ballot initiatives".

If he wanted to include a religious figure, there are any number who would not have been a slap in the face to the gay community who helped him win election, or to anybody who is SICK and tired of the Khrister Right's undeserved dominance of this country for far too long.

"Not NEARLY Good Enough"for you, "Doc"?

Waddaya gonna do?

Take back your vote?

"important for America to come together"

Obama thinks it is "important for America to come together". Did the inaugural committee also invite a leader of the KKK to speak? Rick Warren and his fundamentalist crowd are just as offensive to gay people as the KKK is to the black community or Nazis are to Jews. Everyone I know finds the invitation to Rick Warren to be horribly offensive. We're not getting change in DC, we're just getting new faces.

Obama's the boss, not Rev. Warren

Despite the hostility and even hatefulness of many in the religious right-wing of American society, President-Elect Obama never responded in kind. Rather, he has expressed respectful disagreement. As President, part of his job *requires* that he be respectful and tolerant of all, even when he personally disagrees with someone. As for Rev. Warren, he's a right-wing preacher after all and has no requirement to be respectful or tolerant, even if true Christianity is supposed to be all about respect and tolerance.

The real question we should be asking is why is Rev. Warren so ready and willing to share a stage and smile along with a politician with whom he has such fundamental disagreements? Remember, President-Elect Obama has not flip-flopped on his views about gay rights or abortion rights or any other issue dear to the religious right. Do you think Rev. Warren's willingness to appear at the inauguration has anything to do with the millions of viewers and TV cameras that will be focused on his ruggedly handsome face? Perhaps Rev. Warren is showing us what he really thinks is important to him. Never mind the poor unborn babies and the untold damage that gay marriage suposedly causes to society. What really counts is how many more books and videos Rev. Warren will be able to sell now that he is pals with a popular President. Perhaps he'll make enough money to buy a few new hybrid vehicles for his several-car garage. See, even right-wing religious leaders care about the environment, you know.

Rev. Warren is coming to Obama's inauguration on Obama's terms, even though it conflicts with his supposedly cherished beliefs. This is what we should be focusing on, if we really need to be focusing at all on who delivers prayers at President-Elect Obama's inauguration.

Binding Up the Wounds

It was Abraham Lincoln who talked about binding up the wounds of a very split nation and asking a band to play Dixie. That didn't keep him from commanding and winning a war. If he hadn't been assassinated, I think the South's recovery would have been far quicker. We are still paying for the Reconstruction. Those who took control of the Republican Party got the idea of splitting this nation in order to control it. They've used religion as a club. Obama knows that if he is to achieve goals to salvage our economy and government he is going to have to bind up a heck of a lot of wounds. He's made no beans about that. Before you can bring about a truce, you have to get people communicating with each other. When people get to know each other again, especially Americans who have the common foundation of our Constitution, shared history, shared communities, shared communication culture, etc., we will be more able to work together to solve the problems. Nobody is going to agree with others on everything all the time, even very important things. Democracy is the solution to living together without civil war and revolutions despite the differences. Obama is showing us how to put it into practice, what we've sorely needed for a long time. Pat Williams

Actions, not words

The same lame Clinton/Bush/Obama econo-criminals perpetually promise reform as they move back and forth between Wall Street and government. They never deliver.

Eight TRILLION for Wall Street fat cats. $850 BILLION for construction company CEOs. What about American workers? We just get the BILL.

Why Not Just a Poem Read? Warren,No !

While Obama's appointments may pan out i am still displeased with his selection of right-wing conspirator Rick Warren to invoke a bunch of words that dont mean a goddamn.Prayer is useless and a freaking waste of time. But it would be better to have a poem read by Ophra Winfrey or something like that. Am waning in my support for Obama anyway. But i certainly dont want the moose with lipstick in there. Don't be mixing religion with govt.--even in an inaugeration. He should be placing his hand on a few Playboys not the crazy bible.Better to swear by Playboy than the crazy bible which is a hoax.Playgirl would be better for me.Rick Warren should be sent to Greenland and let him sit on the ice,the anti-gay bastard he is.
