Looking back at a "Day Without a Gay"

A BUZZFLASH NEWS ALERT
by Chad Rubel

So it was a crazy week around here. We can now relate to what New York went through in March. So we let a few things slip through, but didn't want them to get unnoticed. One of those key highlights was "Day Without a Gay" on Wednesday.

When I was in San Francisco, I saw a number of buttons, bumper stickers, et al calling attention to Proposition 8. There were still signs for the other propositions also on the ballot on Election Day. But clearly the Proposition 8 notices got more attention due to the ongoing concern.

Even though two other states passed similar legislation as California did, the protests have rang loudest in the Golden State.

Drawing attention to the issues of making sure gay people have the same rights as others because they are people is really cool, and hopefully the "Day Without a Gay" made some impact.

I also reflect back to Tuesday night's Daily Show with former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee (see above) as Stewart destroyed Huckabee's rational for not allowing gay marriage. That might have done almost as much good as a day to celebrate being gay.

"Day Without a Gay" is supposed to remind us that gays and lesbians are around us. Some of them are funny. Some are boring. Some are conscientious. Some are rude. They are people. They make us better when they are a part of our lives, just like any other group of people. As Bill Clinton put it, "Everybody counts, everybody deserves a chance, everybody has a responsible role to play and we all do better when we work together."

A BUZZFLASH NEWS ALERT

Replacement of "day without a gay"

Personally. I'd rather see a "century without a christian fundamentalist"...

Even better would be a future without ANY fundamentalist

That includes zealots of every religious stripe, "market fundamentalists" and all who practice intolerance as a matter of policy. A "day without a gay" would deprive me of my son and several of my dearest friends, so I find the concept offensive and dehumanizing. However, if it helps some to be more conscious of the idiocy of discrimination -- even if only on grounds of suffering a bad haircut -- I'll grant that it has a purpose.

Huckabee's A Homophobe

...and a Jim Nabors wannabe.

Huchabee, schmuckabee

'Nuff said.
